HP Slate 7 review: HP's budget Android tablet is less of a hit, more of a miss

It's no secret that HP has struggled when it comes to tablets. The company has faced (and crashed into) its share of mobile device hurdles in recent years -- most notably, with the ill-fated and expensive TouchPad. Now HP is dipping its toe back into the tablet market with the budget-friendly Slate 7, but the tablet's underperforming processor and lackluster display leave much to be desired. Google introduced the Nexus Q close to a year ago. It was an intriguing device with a standout design, but its high asking price and limited functionality meant it wasn't long before the Q was pulled from virtual shelves. Broken promise: Double Fine's 'Broken Age' Kickstarter mess

"The world of video game design is a mysterious one," Double Fine's Kickstarter pitch reads. "What really happens behind the closed doors of a development studio is often unknown, unappreciated or misunderstood." Those words were written around February 2012, ahead of the longtime adventure game developer's Kickstarter campaign launch in order to introduce its latest effort to the world.

Sony's crazy 'The Playroom' PlayStation 4 demo comes pre-loaded on the system

Even though Sony's offering a few free PlayStation 4 games at launch to PlayStation Plus members, the company apparently wants to extend its philanthropy to the entire PS4 consumer base. Every PlayStation 4 comes pre-loaded with a copy of The Playroom, which you may remember from E3 2013 as "that crazy demo thing that uses basically every piece of the DualShock 4 and PS4 Eye to amazing effect."

We've crossed paths with Firefox OS before, but today marks the first time we've used handsets running the final build of Mozilla's mobile OS. HP exec says company will re-enter smartphone market, is working on a device that offers a unique experience

HP and phones? It's not over, apparently. The company's Senior Director of Consumer PCs and Tablets for Asia-Pacific, Yam Su Yin, has told The Indian Express that HP isn't done with smartphones and is already working on a new device.

We just got the news that ex-head of Xbox, Don Mattrick, was out at Microsoft, and now we know where he's going: Zynga. AllThingsD reports that Mattrick is officially the new CEO of the casual social gaming firm.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Play edition

It's probably not a huge stretch to say that Samsung's Galaxy S 4 running stock Android was the biggest surprise to come out of Google I/O last month. The handset -- officially called Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Play edition -- is now on sale in the Play store for $649 alongside a special version of the HTC One.

Sharp announces first THX-certified 4K TV

Sharp has just revealed the Aquos Ultra at CE Week, a 70-inch Ultra HDTV the company says is the only THX-certified 4K model on the market. Calling it the company's "best designed TV ever," Sharp said that it put the model through "four hundred rigorous performance tests" to gain the THX nod, which is meant to assure that content is reproduced as closely as possible.

Windows 8.1 in-depth hands-on

The last time we wrote about Windows 8.1, we had lots to talk about, but very little to share in the way of hands-on impressions. Today, though, the OS update is available for anyone to download for free; in fact, because we're oh-so special, we've playing around with it for about 15 hours already.

HTC 8XT with Windows Phone and BoomSound launching on Sprint this summer

HTC's bone-shaking BoomSound front facing speakers are making their way to Windows Phone later this year. The 8XT, which appears to be a slightly tweaked variant of last year's 8S, will launch on Sprint's 4G LTE network for $99.99 with a two-year contract -- after a $50 rebate card.

GEAK Watch packs Android, WiFi and a plethora of sensors, likely 'world's first true smartwatch'

Simply dubbed the GEAK Watch, this wearable device packs a surprising number of components, with the most notable one being the 802.11b/g/n WiFi module. All features considered, this smartwatch honestly sounds too good to be true, and it's only priced at just ¥1,999 or about $330.

Apple releases statement on customer privacy, received over 4,000 government information requests in six months

Following the likes of Microsoft and Facebook, Apple has publicly responded to the explosion of interest in the NSA's PRISM program, and has been authorized to reveal some of the data on what it's shared with the US government in the past. The company says it has "always placed a priority on protecting our customers' personal data," and its legal team evaluates each request.

Samsung CEO plans to sell the 'world's first' LTE-Advanced phone, a new Galaxy S 4 variant

Samsung's already doing a pretty good job selling its new flagship GS4, but now there's another confirmed variant. Samsung's co-chief exec, JK Shin, explained that this modified Galaxy S 4 will be the first smartphone to commercially launch on LTE-Advanced, the next step up from existing LTE. (Not forgetting that the new tech is already live in parts of Russia.)

Skype video messaging officially launches on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android -- but not Windows Phone

Out of beta and free, Skype today launched its video messaging service across all its major platforms. Previously, video missives were limited to 20 free attempts during early testing, but free on premium subscriptions. You can now send unlimited video messages to your Skype contacts on Windows 8, Windows desktop or Mac, while mobile options encompass iOS, Android and BlackBerry.
