Here's some good news for anyone who considers Australia a haven from pernicious surveillance laws. The antipodean government has decided to postpone plans to force phone and internet companies to retain two years' worth of personal data after a scrutiny committee demanded changes. While it's not a total win for privacy fans, the legislation will now be re-examined after elections scheduled for September 14th -- with the Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus saying that the government will now "await further advice," before amending the prospective law.

Aaron Carter Victim of an Alleged Boy Band Hate Crime
What you missed on Instagram this weekend: Former tween pop star Aaron Carter displaying injuries incurred in an alleged boy band turf war.
Carter, the younger brother of a Backstreet Boy whose affections once captivated Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff simultaneously, tells TMZ he was walking across a parking lot in Boston when four men jumped him. "I heard you're doing a show here tomorrow. This is the town of the New Kids," their leader yelled before the gang "jumped out of a gold Chevy Malibu" and attacked. Missing a great opportunity for a dance-off, Carter says he returned fire with his fists and "I think my knuckles might be broken, but that's what they get. People think I'm a pretty little white boy but no way. I think I won. I'm still standing."
Though he feared his fists were broken, the dulcet-voiced pugilist persevered, continuing to make appearances for his ongoing solo tour. Did you know Aaron Carter still tours?
Aaron Carter did not file a police report because that would be "girlie."
Apple I to hit Christie's auction block starting at $300,000
If you weren't able to scrounge up enough coin to snap up the last few Apple I computers to be auctioned off, another chance to score one -- and empty your bank account -- is headed your way. Starting today, Christie's will be auctioning a functional Apple I until July 9, with a starting bid of $300,000. If last month's record-breaking $671,400 sale of a similar rig is anything to go by, this machine may rake in more than its estimated $500,000 value. The owner of the Apple I, who picked it up over three decades ago in a swap, modified it with a keyboard, monitor and a tape deck for storage - in other words, just the motherboard is original. Those more interested in window shopping can ogle the classic hardware at Mountain View's Computer History Museum beginning tomorrow.

Vodafone to buy Germany's biggest cable operator for $10.1 billion
Every summer, the world's second biggest mobile provider likes to splash out on a broadband company to bolster its cellular offerings. Last year, for instance, Vodafone snapped up Cable & Wireless' British fiber-optic network for $1.6 billion -- but that's a bargain compared to the $10.1 billion it's just sealed for Germany's largest cable company, Kabel Deutschland. Unlike last year's deal, which concentrated on infrastructure, this move will see Vodafone entering the triple-play market, offering mobile, fixed-line and TV services. Anyone got a German dictionary to hand? We want to look up what "technofreaks" translates to.
