Gigabit Squared outlines Seattle fiber prices: 1Gbps for $80 per month

Gigabit Squared Unveils Residential Pricing for Local Ultra-High-Speed Fiber Network Service in Seattle

Early neighborhoods announced: University West Campus District, First Hill, Capitol Hill and Central Area

SEATTLE, June 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Gigabit Squared today unveiled residential pricing for the ultra-high-speed fiber-to-the-home broadband network it plans to launch locally in 2014. The Gigabit Squared fiber network will initially be made available to neighborhoods located within the West Campus District, First Hill, Capitol Hill and Central Area of Seattle as part of a program called Gigabit Seattle.

"We are excited about the limitless possibilities our network can bring to the residents located in these areas and are confident that the affordability and high speed performance of our fiber network will be well received," said Mark Ansboury, president of Gigabit Squared. He added, "We will be providing our customers with significantly greater speed and accessibility than what's out there today for about the same price...a true value. This will be backed by a level of customer service that will surpass anything anyone has ever experienced before."

Gigabit Squared's fiber broadband services will be 50 to 1,000 times faster than typical cable modem or DSL Internet access services. Unlike most Internet access services, Gigabit Squared's offerings will be symmetrical (equal upstream and downstream data rates) to enable interactive services that require two-way sharing of video, audio, images, and other large files in real time.

"We're one step closer to bringing gigabit speed broadband to Seattle," said Mayor Mike McGinn. "We are leveraging our new public-private partnership with the University of Washington and Gigabit Squared to help Seattle compete in the global economy. I'm excited to see how our residents and businesses can innovate with this new infrastructure."

Gigabit Squared's simplified fiber network pricing plans for Seattle will be structured as follows:

1) Installation Charge: Installation charges will be waived for customers signing a one-year contract for 100 Mbps service or greater. Otherwise, a $350 installation fee is required.

2) Service Plan Options:

Plan A:
5 Mbps download/1 Mbps upload: No charge for 60 months
5/1 Mbps services are transferrable to new renters or owners
After 60 months renters or owners can convert to a 10 Mbps download/10 Mbps upload service plan for only $10 per month

Plan B:
100 Mbps download/100 Mbps upload for $45 per month
No installation charge with one- year contract

Plan C:
1000 download/1000 upload Mbps for $80 per month
No installation charge with one-year contract

Since the launch of the Gigabit Seattle website in December, thousands of Seattle residents have already expressed an interest in the service. Ansboury commented, "We will be announcing a simple sign-up process next month that will make it easy for people to sign up for the service that best meets their individual needs. This will help us prioritize the neighborhood rollout schedule. We can't wait to make this available to as many residents as possible and look forward to our initial program's success so we can quickly expand into other areas of Seattle."

Bell Labs doubles light in fiber optic lines to reach greater distances

It's comparatively easy to run fiber optic lines at high speeds; it's another matter to sustain that pace between continents. Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs has found a way to go that extreme distance by relying on the basic concept behind noise-cancelling headphones. When the researchers send data across two light beams in opposing phases, they can superimpose the signals and neutralize the distortion that would normally occur at long ranges. Such clean output lets Bell Labs ramp up the signal strength and maintain high speeds across whole oceans: its test pushed 400Gbps through 7,954 miles of fiber. There's no word on how soon we'll see twin-light technique put into practice, although we suspect that a networking giant like Alcatel-Lucent wants the extra bandwidth as quickly as possible.

This Tiny Town Is Getting Ultra-Fast Google Fiber Before You

Google continues to expand its Google Fiber service to more cities, adding a small city in Kansas to the lucky places slated to get the search giant's ultrafast broadband connections.

The city council in Shawnee, Kansas — population just upward of 60,000 people — approved the Google Fiber expansion Thursday night. Shawnee joins Austin, Texas, and Provo, Utah, as the latest Google Fiber additions in the past month.

"We’ve also been impressed by Shawnee’s vision to keep their citizens informed and involved using the Internet," Google Fiber community manager Rachel Hack said in a blog post, touting the city's revamped website that lets citizens "easily access city info" such as audio of city council meetings, crime maps and fiscal reports.

Google didn't say when Fiber would arrive in Shawnee, but it likely won't be anytime soon because the Google folks "still have a lot of planning and engineering work to do."

Kansas City, Miss., and Kansas City, Kansas, are the only two cities with working Fiber so far. Other than Shawnee, Provo and Austin, these Kansas areas are scheduled to get Fiber: Westwood, Westwood Hills, Mission Woods and Olathe.

Google Fiber is a fiber optic cable Internet that Google says provides "an Internet connection speed 100 times faster than today's average broadband, paired with crystal-clear high definition TV." Here's how Google Fiber works:

Fiber's faster speed means that items such as videos and photos can be uploaded and downloaded noticeably quicker than typical broadband connections, making way for high-speed tools that were never possible before.

"Imagine chatting with your doctors or teachers via HD video conference, or collaborating on a work or school project with contributors across the globe in real time, without delays," Google explains. "Imagine new online billing applications that don't freeze. Imagine automatically saving all of your work to the cloud in a blink of an eye — and never having to worry about losing files to a computer crash again."

A gigabit-per-second connection is equal to 1,000 megabits per second. Compare that to the average broadband connection in the U.S., a comparatively pokey 7.4 megabits per second.

Google offers three subscription packages for neighborhoods with Fiber:

Aside from the fast Internet speeds, Google is getting into the TV space with Google Fiber TV, whose users get a Nexus 7 tablet and a TV app with a subscription.

Google Fiber TV is similar to Verizon FiOS, in that it bundles Internet and TV service in one package. Fiber pricing — and its specifications for TV fans particularly — are appealing at first glance compared to FiOS and other broadband services, but they're unlikely to compete heavily because each service isn't in every state yet. FiOS, for example, is only in a dozen or so states while Fiber is in fewer.

Google Fiber TV, which recently added HBO and Cinemax to its offerings, lets subscribers watch and record 500 hours of TV, record eight shows simultaneously, search via DVR and connect to Netflix and other services.
