Making simple edits to a post on Wikipedia hasn't traditionally been an impossible undertaking, but Wiki markup (the syntax used to add and adjust formatting) wasn't nearly as intuitive as it could have been. And editors dropped like flies as a result of confusing tags and a generally frustrating workflow. Now, in an attempt to simplify the editing process dramatically, the site's management team is adding a brand new What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG) tool called VisualEditor. Making corrections is now as simple as hitting "Edit" and typing in your changes -- intuitive buttons for text formatting, list creation and adding headings enable you to make pages look nice and consistent without a lot of work. Assuming you're using a recent version of Chrome, Safari or Firefox, manual page overhauls should take minutes, rather than hours. when.eng("eng.perm.init")Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Facebook rolls out hashtag support for mobile web and related searches

Clickable hashtags are a major new Facebook feature, and now the social network is bringing them to the next level by rolling out related searches and mobile availability. We're talking about its mobile site and (unfortunately) not its iOS and Android apps, making the former a better choice for browsing public status updates on the go. The introduction of related searches also makes it easier to discover new conversations, as searching for a particular hashtag brings up similar ones. Facebook analyzes which terms are often posted together, so looking for #equality also brings up posts tagged with #lgbt or #pride. These updates will soon show up on your accounts if they haven't yet, and unless you despise hashtags, they're icing on the cake.

Firefox gets a new logo, rolls out desktop and Android Beta updates

Firefox is an ever evolving beast, and that includes both its friendly orange fox logo, and its Beta channel browser. Today Mozilla unveiled the fourth Firefox logo, a (slightly) less textured and glossy icon for its favored web browser. Meanwhile, the latest update for for Firefox Beta brings access to the company's Social API and, consequently, Share buttons to the platform -- so Facebook fanatics can have one-click sharing of images, articles, videos and links from the Firefox toolbar. The new Beta is also getting a Mixed Content Blocker that prevents HTTP (read: nonsecure) content from loading on HTTPS websites. Plus, there's a new Network Monitor feature to let devs see how quickly individual page components load and optimizations for OS X 10.7 that enable its scrollbar style and and the scroll bounce behavior Apple fans love.
Oh, and for you mobile fans, the Android Beta was updated today, too. Now, it's got an auto-hide Awesome Bar, a URL autocomplete function and an updated RSS feed reader that allows you to add feeds to with a long press on the aforementioned Awesome Bar. Pretty awesome, gents, now let's get these Beta features into a full release, and it'll be really awesome.

Google+ Rolls Out iOS, Android App Update With Photo Editing
Samantha Murphy2013-03-25 13:25:01 -0400Google has pushed out a new update to its iOS and Android apps, with photo editing and filters, as well as a beautiful new design that looks similar to its desktop layout.
The company has ushered in a few minor changes, and they're certainly pretty to look at. Among the biggest additions is the inclusion of filters and photo edits from within the app. Thanks to photo enhancements from Snapseed, users can now rotate and crop pictures and add filters such as Drama and Retrolux. It's also possible to adjust saturation, contrast and other levels.
The Android update includes a nice refresh in its content stream too. For example, posts include more text and image previews are rarely cropped. Actions such as re-sharing, commenting and +1 now get more real estate in each post. Users can also swipe through photos inline, allowing users to spend more time sifting through pictures and less time clicking.
The app lets you share your current location with specific circles too. You can also decide who you want to see your whereabouts — only those with permission can see a list of your most recent locations under your profile name.
There's a lot more flexibility within the apps. Users can adjust the volume of community posts in your Home screen, search for members and moderate content, and re-share news with a community. Even small touches like refreshing the page reveal Google's signature colors. We appreciate the details.
The apps will be available for download via Google Play and the Apple App Store later today.
The company also announced it is bundling the complete set of Nik photo plug-ins as the Nik Collection by Google for professional and amateur photographers. The plug-ins for Photoshop, Lightroom and Aperture costs $149 (down from $499), with features such as HDR imaging and image sharpening.
