The GOP Wants to Make Sure Voters Know That Hillary Clinton Is an Older Woman

The Republican Party, which has not been been popular with the kids of late, has a not so innovative strategy for taking the youth vote from Hillary Clinton if and when she decides to run for President in 2016: Remind the public that she is an older woman. Like all of us, Clinton, who is currently 65 years old, will have aged by about four years by the time the next election rolls around, and the GOP is hoping that that will somehow make her look totally decrepit when compared to the Party's serious contenders, most of whom are more than a decade younger than she is. As the New York Times notes, Governor Chris Christie and Senator Rand Paul are both 50, and Governor Bobby Jindal and Senator Marco Rubio are 42. (Plus, Rubio has the youth-intoxicating ability to "[drop] the names of rappers like Pitbull and Jay-Z," while Paul came up with the term "Facebook Generation" and is very into legalizing pot and calling out the surveillance state.)

And, to hear Republican strategists tell it, Clinton's sheer oldness is more than just an opportunity to point out that she has wrinkles — it's a tool for labeling her "a has-been." As Republican Governor Scott Walker said in a reference to Bill Clinton's 1992 Fleetwood Mac campaign song, "If you want to keep thinking about tomorrow, maybe it’s time to put somebody new in." And last year, Senator Mitch McConnell compared the prospect of Joe Biden or Clinton running to "a rerun of The Golden Girls," an idea that might actually be appreciated by both 71-year-olds like himself and legions of 18- to 34-year-olds.

Of course, the "time for a new generation" idea has worked before. President Kennedy used it to beat Nixon in 1960, as did President Obama when he ran against John McCain in 2008 and Romney in 2012. And then there were Mr. Clinton's baby-boomer victories against two members of the Greatest Generation, the first President George Bush and Bob Dole. But there are many ways this strategy could backfire when it comes to Clinton, not the least of which would be charges of sexism for focusing on a woman's age, especially when that woman is trying to become the first female president of the United States.

Additionally, as the Times points out, "Mrs. Clinton’s maturity could be more of an attribute than a liability. American voters have a tendency to elect presidents with the traits that their predecessors lacked, and if Mr. Obama’s term ends on a sour note, the electorate may look fondly upon a candidate with deep experience." And if the Obama term ends well, then Clinton can point to her contributions as part of the administration, as well as all the other things she's done and will do in between now and 2016. Plus, unlike the Republicans' patron saint and oldest President, Ronald Reagan, Clinton has shown herself to be more than willing to directly engage with young people and to laugh at perceptions of her own stodginess while proving that she's actually pretty fun after all.

Acer won't do Windows Phone this year, asks Microsoft to pick up the pace

It's been a long, long time since Acer launched a Windows Phone... and from all indications, we're going to keep waiting. The company's Allen Burnes tells Pocket-lint that Windows Phone 8 is good, but "not the right decision" for Acer in 2013. His firm is concerned with boosting sales volume, and the Liquid series of Android phones are currently better for that task, Burnes says. In his mind, Microsoft has to make a stronger case for Windows Phone -- Acer will come back to the OS once there's improved marketing and (hopefully) more demand. We aren't entirely surprised that Acer is holding off when it's already reluctant to back Windows RT, but the cautious attitude is still a disappointment for those who want a little more diversity in Microsoft's mobile ecosystem.

Maybe Your Dad Wants an Acid Peel This Father’s Day

As if shopping for Father's Day weren't tricky enough already, the Daily News reports that more children and spouses are choosing plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures for dad. Long Island plastic surgeon Dr. Stephen Greenberg offers a dad package, and one Soho medical spa is offering 20 percent off noninvasive fat sculpting for Father’s Day. Another Manhattan plastic surgeon, Dr. Sam Rizk, sees male business triple in the weeks surrounding Father’s Day. His $30,000 neck lift — the better to show off last year's neck tie — comes with a year’s supply of Botox. “I don’t think it’s offensive anymore,” Dr. Michael Fiorilla told the News. “It’s more like buying a massage or buying a spa treatment, and making your dad feel good about himself.” No more offensive than another book he’s already read, probably.

Kathleen Hanna Wants You to Dress Like You’re Asking for It

“This is exciting,” Bikini Kill and Le Tigre frontwoman Kathleen Hanna says. “We never get asked about fashion.”

Hanna and Bikini Kill bassist Kathi Wilcox are tucked behind a makeshift bar of single-serve champagne bottles in the Soho storefront of VFILES. The punk band and fashion media outfit have collaborated on a capsule collection, which launched yesterday, to celebrate the release of The Riot Grrrl Collection — a book of zines and other ephemera from Bikini Kill and other bands in NYU’s riot grrrl archives.

Hanna and Wilcox drink Perrier and sign a copy of The Riot Grrrl Collection for an uncharacteristically star-struck Leigh Lezark before chatting with the Cut about the origins of the collection’s dress. A black, short-sleeved t-shirt dress that reads “KILL ME,” it’s based on a similar number, in red, that Hanna wore to 1993 abortion rights benefit concert Rock for Choice.

“It was red and it had holes cut out on the sides,” Hanna says, gesturing to her ribs. “And I ironed on the letters.” The message was part reference to the Richard Hell design from which the punk oral history takes its name, part response to the attacks Bikini Kill faced at the time. In addition to the men who threatened the band at shows, she says, “women were saying we weren’t doing feminism right, journalists were like, ‘somebody should put tape on her mouth.’”

“It was along the lines of ‘slut,’” Wilcox adds. “A way of saying, ‘I’m going to take the words out of your mouth. I know this is what you want to do.’”

Writers and critics tend to focus on Bikini Kill’s politics and feminism, but Hanna says she put a lot of thought into her on-stage outfits. “Fashion really was a big part of our band, and we really liked goofing around with fashion, but people think it’s antithetical to feminism.”

On the contrary, she says, she used costumes to play with gender, like the hairy-chested pirate costume she cut into a shirt and paired with a Betsey Johnson miniskirt, or the dress with a photo of a Speedo-clad "Chippendale’s kind of guy" on it. (“It was the man inside me,” she says.) Others, like a Girl Scouts uniform, spoke to their anger at having been “ripped off” of their childhoods. “You remember the times when you were 15 and you should have been having fun but guys were driving past you in pick-ups, calling you names or trying to get you in the car,” Hanna says.

Hanna felt compelled to explain the Kill Me dress to the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, which, along with other members of The Girls Rock Camp Alliance, will receive proceeds from the collection. “The idea is: What constitutes asking for it?” she says. We accept that women who wear revealing clothing invite commentary on their body. Hanna wonders, “If you wear a dress that says 'kill me' on it, does that mean you’re asking for it?”

Nineties fashion is not the only aspect of Bikini Kill’s moment that remains stubbornly relevant. From Slut Walk to Rookie, a new generation of young women appears to be drawn to riot grrrl politics. Hanna herself has called Bikini Kill's first album a gateway drug to feminism. If she had known riot grrrl would appeal to girls for decades to come, is there anything she would have changed about its message?

“There was a lot of imagery of white women in riot grrrl and it seemed like a very white thing,” she says. “In different states, there was way more diversity, and whenever people say riot grrl was all white, I feel like all the women of color — who were involved and contributed and whose voices are in The Riot Grrrl Collection — get totally erased. But at the same time, I have to admit I was a white middle class woman writing from that perspective, and that became associated with the riot grrrl look.”

“I don’t…” she begins. “I do. I do feel bad about it. I wish it would have felt more welcoming to more women and younger women of color.”

It's almost dinner time, and Hanna and Wilcox have come straight from band practice (a new album is due from their current group, The Julie Ruin, in September). A publicist rushes over with Sour Patch Kids and salt and vinegar chips. Hanna declines, joking, "We, like, only eat kale."

Scanadu finalizes Scout tricorder design, wants user feedback to help it get FDA approval

Scanadu Packs More Features Into Scanadu Scout™; Unveils Design For Project ScanaFlo

Company Launches Indiegogo Campaign to Begin Building the Future Global Body of Health Data

NASA Ames Research Park, Moffett Field, CA - May 22, 2013 - Scanadu, a personalized health electronics company participating in the Qualcomm Tricorder X PRIZE, today announced it is one step closer to bringing the first medical tricorder™ to life. In addition to unveiling updates and refinements to Scanadu Scout™ and Project ScanaFlo, the company has also launched an Indiegogo campaign, inviting supporters to reserve a first-edition Scanadu Scout™ and contribute to building the future global body of health data.

"We are in awe at the enthusiasm the community has shown for the Scanadu Scout since the prototype was first revealed six months ago. We get calls and emails everyday from parents, researchers, students and body hackers anxious to be part of the first generation of consumers to truly understand their own health," said Scanadu Founder and CEO Walter de Brouwer. "We've pushed the envelope, had some key breakthroughs, and are ready to share this next iteration of the product with consumers."

Scanadu Scout is a vital sign monitor that analyzes, tracks, and trends your vitals - temperature, respiratory rate, oximetry, ECG, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and stress - in 10 seconds. With encouraging feedback from the community, partners, and regulators, and a strong push from Scanadu's engineers and researchers, the company has made three key breakthroughs:

• Multi-person scouting: Just like Spock, you can now scout someone else - an ailing parent or sick child. With this breakthrough, Scanadu made some key changes to the design. It is now circular in shape, with the sensors built into the front of the device.
• One-stop-shop healthfeed: You'll be able to collect readings from Scanadu's suite of products - including Project ScanaFlo - through a single integrated app. Seeing your comprehensive healthfeed allows for data fusion, and the potential to read more vitals such as cuffless, non-invasive blood pressure.

• Increased computational power: Scanadu has added more horsepower to the device, taking it from 8-bit (the power of an Apple II) to 32-bit (the power of a smartphone). The new device is built on Micrium, NASA's real-time operation system for SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) on the Rover Curiosity.

The company also announced updates today to Project ScanaFlo, a low-cost tool that uses the smartphone as a urine analysis reader, and unveiled the first design of the product. The small white, disposable paddle with multi-colored test strips and a QR code built into the device tests for levels of glucose, protein, leukocytes, nitrates, blood, bilirubin, urobilinogen, specific gravity, and pH in urine. It will also test for pregnancy.

Scanadu has received its first batch of 6,000 paddles and is ready to begin clinical trials. The company anticipates submitting a 510(k) application to FDA in the beginning of July 2013.

"Today's urine tests are really hard to use and the results are not easy to interpret," said Aaron Rowe, research director at Scanadu. "Scanaflo will make it simple for pregnant women to monitor themselves for complications between appointments with their doctor."

Lastly, starting today, supporters can reserve a first-edition Scanadu Scout on Indiegogo and be part of the exploratory community bringing to life the vision of making this the last generation to know so little about our health. As a participant in the Indiegogo campaign, supporters will be able to take part in a usability study and provide feedback on feasibility, usability, and consumer friendliness that will be a valuable part of Scanadu's road to FDA.

The 30-day campaign will offer a variety of perks including regular updates from Scanadu, a limited edition Scanadu Scout, visits to NASA to spend the day as a citizen astronaut for a space medicine workshop, and a tour of NASA Ames Research Park. Scanadu will offer an early bird special of $149 for the device to the first 1,000 participants. Additional units will be made available at the anticipated retail price of $199. Additionally, two ScanaFlo paddles be included with each Scanadu Scout, which is expected to ship in Q1 2014. The devices on Indiegogo are not FDA approved.

STAR TREK, TRICORDER and related marks and logos are trademarks of CBS Studios Inc. used under license by the X PRIZE Foundation. Scanadu is a participant in the Qualcomm Tricorder X PRIZE competition.

About Scanadu

Based at NASA-Ames Research Park, Scanadu is using mobile, sensor and social technology to ensure this is the last generation to know so little about our health. In November 2012, the company unveiled its product family consisting of the Scanadu Scout vital sign monitor, Project ScanaFlo urine analysis test and Project ScanaFlu saliva test. The first products look to disrupt home medicine and will be in market early 2014. Scanadu was founded by Walter de Brouwer in 2010 and is competing in the Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize. Snoop Dogg Wants to Perform With Bob Marley 3D Hologram

SnoopsmokeTodd-olmstead By Todd Olmstead2013-05-09 23:05:02 UTC

Snoop Dogg has been known for many things throughout his career, from his long list of hits as a solo artist to his very vocal love of marijuana. But he's also developed a reputation for being cutting edge and social savvy.

In addition to his large presence on Facebook and Twitter, he made news last year for his powerful performance alongside a hologram of the late rapper Tupac Shakur.

Earlier this week, Snoop Dogg — also more recently known as Snoop Lion — teamed up with Mashable for a Twitter chat Q&A with fans and offered insight into his artistic motivation, favorite collaborators and if he would perform with another 3D holographic artist in the future.

When asked which artist he would collaborate with again as a hologram, he said: "bobmarley!!!!!" And as for where he wants to perform one day? "Tha moon."

He also used the chat as an opportunity to promote his two new apps: The Reincarnated Track Notes app [iTunes link], which is a companion to his new album, as well as the Snoopify app for photo sharing. He even sent us this photo he made using Snoopify featuring Mashable founder Pete Cashmore:

During the hour-long Twitter chat, Snoop Dogg received thousands of questions and the hashtag #SnoopChat quickly became a worldwide trending topic. Below, check out some of the highlights from Snoop's Twitter chat.

ABC Wants Your Instant TV Feedback — With Emoticons

AudienceSam Laird2013-04-26 01:08:28 UTC

So you sit down for some important programming, whether a Barack Obama speech or your favorite sitcom. You've got all the fixings: Comfy chair, tasty snacks and, of course, your second screen device of choice to keep up with online chatter.

Now would you add one more thing to the mix by spending the next thirty minutes continuously clicking a range of emoticons to register the ebbs and flows of your viewing emotions?

That's the idea behind Social Sountracker, an iPhone app from ABC that's currently in beta form. The app lets users schedule reminders for shows and other programming, then sign in to give instant feedback via a set of five emoticons. There's a laughing emoticon, a booing emoticon, an "aww" emoticon, a clapping emoticon and a surprised emoticon.

When you click each emoticon, you'll also hear a corresponding sound effect. You'll hear sound effects from your Facebook friends whenever they register a reaction as well.

Joe Ruffalo, senior vice president for ABC News Digital, sees the app as a way for the network to register feedback on programming while allowing its audience to add a social element to their viewing habits.

“We hope viewers find Social Soundtracker to be a personal and interactive way to engage with their friends while watching their favorite video online or on TV,” Ruffolo said in a press release. “It is a completely new way to watch video and engage with content, and we’re excited to learn more about how people use it.

"Social Soundtracker will evolve to best suit viewers’ needs — the possibilities are truly limitless. It’s clear people want to be connected to their social networks while watching the video they love.”

Does Social Soundtracker sound like something you would use? Let us know in the comments.

George Lucas Museum Wants Your Facebook Likes

77177227Chris Taylor2013-04-26 02:08:09 UTC

Not so long ago, in a city near, near the Bay, a certain retired filmmaker decided to build a place he could hang his Death Star-sized art collection and share it with a public eager for inspiration. Now he needs you, loyal citizens of the Lucas Empire, to show your support for the project.

The George Lucas Cultural Arts Museum is currently just a dream. But on Friday, the dreamer par excellence will personally present his plans to the Presidio Trust in San Francisco, along with five other projects vying for the same space (currently occupied by a Sports Basement). The Presidio, a former military base, is already home to Lucasfilm itself, as well as the Walt Disney Family Museum. So you can see the urge to complete a Disney-Lucas trifecta there.

With an eye to the Trust's decision, a campaign has now been launched to garner support via social media. The Lucas Museum, largely unknown outside the Bay Area, currently has less than 500 Likes on Facebook. (It also has a newborn Twitter account, @Lucasmuseum.) On Thursday night, the Museum's team launches its first on-screen Facebook appeal at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

"Building community awareness is key to the success of the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum," says spokesman David Perry. "You're faceless without Facebook, and we want to put a community face on our efforts. To paraphrase Carly Rae Jepsen, so Like me maybe."

So what do you get for your hard-earned Like? Well, the collection is a testament to Lucas' lifelong love of illustration. Since he started out as a preteen comics nerd with a yen for Carl Banks' Scrooge McDuck — which yielded the first page he ever bought — there are plans for plenty of unabashed geeking out over the golden age of comics.

But that's just the beginning. Once he became wealthy, Lucas started voraciously collecting fine art that told whole stories in single images — such as the works of Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish and the less well-known (but just as prolific) N.C. Wyeth.

Then there are galleries on special effects digital film and animation. There are plans to showcase costumes, props and a droid or two from the Lucas archive. Some little company you might have heard of, Industrial Light and Magic, should be well represented.
