Samsung R&D center

You gotta spend money to make money. Samsung knows that, which is why the Korean powerhouse will be spending about 5 trillion won (roughly $4.5 billion) to build five new R&D centers over the next three years. All of the facilities will be in the company's homeland, with a $1 billion research center set to open in southern Seoul late in 2015. At that particular building, it's expected that some 10,000 employees will take up residence, focusing primarily on design. Samsung also plans to dedicate new R&D centers to materials and component development, as well as chips and displays. In 2012 Samsung dropped a company-record 11.9 trillion won (about $10.5 billion) on R&D, and there's no sign that it'll be slowing down anytime soon. In fact, its research budget is up about $1.4 billion from 2011. Sure, there might not be as much of an immediate windfall from the investment, like you might see from an advertising blitz or lawsuit, but we're willing to bet it keeps Sammy competitive for much of the foreseeable future.

The US Department of Defense told a Washington thinktank yesterday that it would spend $23 billion in the next four years to kick its cyber defenses up a gear. That'll include building out a "secure 4G wireless network that will get iPads, iPhones and Android devices online by mid-2014," according to Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin Dempsey. The DoD recently approved Blackberry 10, iOS and Samsung Galaxy devices with Knox, and General Dempsey himself was packing a smartphone he said would "make Batman and James Bond jealous." While there were no details about how such a mobile network would be locked down, he did say that all 15,000 of the Department's computer networks would be consolidated into an enterprise cloud system to increase security. All that is to combat a "17-fold" cyber warfare increase in just over two years -- no doubt including recent Chinese hacking that the White House took the rare step of recently highlighting.

Telefonica to sell its Irish operations to Three for $1.1 billion

TELEFONICA AGREES THE SALE OF ITS OPERATING BUSINESS IN IRELAND TO HUTCHI SON WHAMPOA FOR 850 MILLION EUROS

This transaction is part of Telefónica's policy of proactive management of its asset portfolio and the initiatives to increase the company's financial flexibility.

Madrid, 24th June 2013 - Telefónica today reached an agreement with Three, the Irish subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa, to sell its 100% stake in Telefónica Ireland. This transaction – which is subject, among other conditions, to obtaining the relevant competition approvals – will create a new competitive dynamic in the Irish market.

The total consideration for the acquisition is 850 million euros, with 780 million euros in cash payable on completion and a further additional deferred payment of 70 million euros dependent upon achievement of agreed financial objectives.

This transaction is part of Telefónica's ongoing policy of proactive management of its asset portfolio with the aim of increasing the company's financial flexibility. Without considering the additional deferred payment it is expected that this agreement will reduce Telefónica's net debt position by approximately 780 million euros, accelerating Telefónica's deleveraging process and bringing the Company closer to its stated goal to reach a net debt level below 47 billion euros ($62 billion) in 2013.

Vodafone to buy Germanys biggest cable operator for $101 billion

Every summer, the world's second biggest mobile provider likes to splash out on a broadband company to bolster its cellular offerings. Last year, for instance, Vodafone snapped up Cable & Wireless' British fiber-optic network for $1.6 billion -- but that's a bargain compared to the $10.1 billion it's just sealed for Germany's largest cable company, Kabel Deutschland. Unlike last year's deal, which concentrated on infrastructure, this move will see Vodafone entering the triple-play market, offering mobile, fixed-line and TV services. Anyone got a German dictionary to hand? We want to look up what "technofreaks" translates to.

Google reportedly closing in on $1.3 billion deal for Waze traffic app

Israeli business papers report Google closing in on $13b deal for Waze traffic app

Last month news leaked that Facebook might acquire crowdsourced navigation / traffic / mapping app Waze, but now two papers in Israel say Google is about to close the deal. Globes and Calcalist both peg the potential sale price at $1.3 billion US, with the company's development team remaining in Israel after the sale and not moving to the US. Where they will work from is cited by Globes as one reason why negotiations may not have worked out with Facebook, along with the price tag. For those unfamiliar with Waze, the app generates mapping data in real-time based on its nearly 50 million users and reports of accidents or traffic jams.

The last few years have been a tumultuous time for LightSquared, with the company's LTE plans facing one hurdle after another that eventually led to a bankruptcy filing. It looks like at least one company is now looking to buy its most valuable asset, though, with Bloomberg reporting that Dish Network Chairman Charlie Ergen has put a $2 billion offer on the table for the company's wireless spectrum. That's yet to be confirmed by either party, and Bloomberg reports that the offer is a so-called stalking horse bid, which could still let others put in a higher offer of their own. As Bloomberg also notes, this all comes at the same time that Dish is looking to buy Sprint for over $25 billion, both of which would need regulatory approval before going through.

Yahoo to acquire Tumblr in $11 billion cash deal

That cat's out of the bag a day early, it seems. Yahoo's board has approved a $1.1 billion cash deal to purchase the blogging site Tumblr, according to The Wall Street Journal. We were expecting Yahoo to announce the acquisition during tomorrow's NYC media event -- CEO Marissa Mayer may instead use the last-minute gathering to detail the company's plans for integrating the popular platform. It's unclear how Yahoo intends to utilize its latest procurement, but with a 10-figure price tag now public, we can only imagine that Tumblr will be put to good use. We'll be covering tomorrow afternoon's event live, so stay tuned for more details from New York City.

Earlier today, Yahoo sent press invites to a "product-related" event in New York City Monday afternoon and there are already two separate rumors about the company's plans. The first, from Bloomberg, concerns the event specifically and cites a "person familiar with the matter" reporting we'll hear about new updates for Yahoo's once-mighty Flickr photo service. The second is from AllThingsD which has upgraded rumors of a Tumblr purchase from possible to possibly imminent, saying the company's board will meet Sunday to decide whether it will make a $1.1 billion all-cash offer for the site. Since new CEO Marissa Mayer took over Yahoo has made a number of acquisitions with a focus on improving its homepage, content and app offerings including Flickr. That announcement is also penciled in for the 20th, but whatever actually goes down you can be sure we'll have the details as they're unveiled around 4PM ET.

Google Now Has $50 Billion in Cash for Acquisitions and Investments

Goog-q1-earningsSeth Fiegerman2013-04-18 20:54:25 UTC

Next time you wonder how Google can afford to buy dozens of startups every year, consider just how much money it has on hand.

The search giant's cash pile grew to just more than $50 billion in the March quarter, up from $48.1 billion at the end of 2012, the company revealed in its first quarter earnings report on Thursday. That's still less than half as much cash as Apple has, but it will likely serve as a powerful resource for Google to continue buying up technology and top talent from companies, as well as investing in so-called "moonshot" projects.

As Google's chairman Eric Schmidt pointed out during a Q&A session at AllThingsD's Dive Into Mobile conference earlier this week, he is not a fan of companies holding onto an excess amount of cash. "What I really think about tech companies and cash is that there is a point where you have enough cash that you need to either start investing that stuff or lowering your prices," he said. Simply letting the cash pile grow, he says, would be a "missed opportunity for investment."

Google has never been shy about using its money to invest in infrastructure and acquisitions. In 2011, the company spent $12.5 billion to acquire Motorola Mobility and its portfolio of patents. Earlier this year, Google's CFO suggested that the cash pile gives the company the "strategic ability to pounce" and, in the case of Motorola, "move on a dime" to make the acquisition.

While Google may have significantly less cash than Apple, its willingness to bet some of it on potentially risky companies and projects may be what sets it apart from Apple going forward. While Apple's stock price has collapsed below $400, Google's has climbed above $750 driven in part by the perception that it, unlike Apple, has more breakthrough products in the pipeline.

Even apart from the cash pile, Google's profits and revenue continue to grow as well. Google reported a profit of $11.58 per share in the first quarter on revenue of $13.97 billion, beating Wall Street's earnings estimates of $10.69, though falling short of revenue estimates of $14.04 billion.

The company still has some problems to fix in the short-term, most notably the decline in cost-per-clicks, which declined 4% in the first quarter from the year before, but the rate of decline has slowed, suggesting that it is stabilizing.

Microsoft Announces Q3 Revenue of $20.49 Billion, CFO Departure

BallmerEmily Price2013-04-18 20:52:04 UTC

Despite reports that Windows 8 has been torpedoing PC sales, Microsoft's third quarter wasn't too bad. The company's revenues of $20.49 billion were just under what analysts were expecting and its earnings per share of $0.72 beat expectations.

“The bold bets we made on cloud services are paying off as people increasingly choose Microsoft services including Office 365, Windows Azure, Xbox LIVE, and Skype,” said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft, in a statement. “While there is still work to do, we are optimistic that the bets we’ve made on Windows devices position us well for the long-term.”

By division, Microsoft Business reported at 8% increase over last year, Server & Tools an 11% increase, Windows a 23% increase, Online Services an 18% increase, and Entertainment and Services jumped 56% over the year-ago quarter.

The company says that it now has 46 million Xbox LIVE members worldwide, and 18% over last year.

In addition to numbers, Microsoft also announced the departure of its CFO, Peter Klein Thursday. Klein will leave the company at the end of the current fiscal year after spending four years as CFO, and 11 years at Microsoft as a whole. Internet Ad Revenues Top $36 Billion in 2012, Study Says

Internet ad revenues in the U.S. increased by 15% in 2012 to $36.6 billion, driven by significant year-over-year increases in revenue for mobile, search and digital video ads, according to a new report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau. Digital ad revenues also had a strong second-half of the year, topping $10 billion in the fourth quarter for the first time ever.

Mobile ad revenue more than doubled from the previous year to $3.4 billion from $1.6 billion, the second year in a row that mobile ad revenue has experienced triple-digit growth. Digital video revenue increased by 29% in 2012 to $2.3 billion and search ad revenue increased by 14% to $16.9 billion.

Search ad revenue still accounts for nearly half of all digital ad revenues, but it's share ticked down slightly last year while the share from mobile ads increased from 5% in 2011 to 9% in 2012. "Mobile, in particular, soared due to its ubiquity and intrinsic ability to serve as a powerful digital dashboard that travels with you from morning commute to nighttime video viewing and beyond," Randall Rothenberg, President and CEO, IAB, said in a statement.

Total digital ad revenue is now on the verge of passing broadcast television to become the top media source in the U.S. for ad revenue. It passed cable television in ad revenue in 2011.
