Google officially acquired the crowd-sourced mapping and traffic app Waze earlier this month, but the $1.1 billion deal is hitting a last-minute jam. The search giant has confirmed with Reuters that the Federal Trade Commission recently opened an antitrust investigation into the purchase, even though Waze will mostly operate independently. According to the New York Post, Google didn't file a review with the FTC because Waze makes less than $70 million annually, which is below the bar for an "automatic review." Reuters notes that the FTC can put a magnifying glass to any closed deals at its discretion, namely to ensure there was no prior intent simply to stifle competition. These latest happenings might make for a temporary roadblock between the integration of certain data from Waze and Google, notes the Post -- assuming the deal indeed gets an okay from The Man. Either way, we'd imagine concessions will be made if needed, as Google's no stranger to these types of proceedings.

Justice Department clears Softbank acquisition of Sprint

Softbank and Sprint have been on pins and needles ever since January, when the US Department of Justice asked the FCC to delay the carriers' merger as it scrutinized the deal over national security concerns. The two networks can breathe a little easier this weekend, as the DOJ just dropped its request for more time. There's "no objection" to the acquisition following a review, the agency says. Not that the companies are completely out of the woods: the FCC has to approve the buyout, and there's still the small matters of Dish's bids for both Sprint and Clearwire. Softbank may not want to drop its backup plan just yet.

Yahoo to Hold News Conference Amid Tumblr Acquisition Rumors

Samantha-murphy By Samantha Murphy2013-05-17 20:45:20 UTC

Following rumors that Yahoo is in talks to buy blogging platform Tumblr for an estimated $1 billion, the company has sent members of the press invitations to a mysterious event it is holding next week.

The event, which will be held at 5:00 p.m. ET in New York City on Monday, includes the tagline on the invitation: "Join us as we share something special."

Yahoo Press Event Invitation

Company CEO Marissa Mayer is expected to speak at the product-related news event, according to CNBC.

The news comes as reports indicated this week Yahoo is closing in on a deal to buy Tumblr, which would make the transaction — if it's $1 billion — the largest since Facebook bought Instagram in 2012.
