Yahoo acquires Xobni, aims for smarter contacts in its services

Yahoo must be starting the summer with an acquisition spree: it bought Qwiki yesterday, and it's buying Xobni today in a deal that AllThingsD estimates is worth $30 million to $40 million. The acquisition gives Yahoo a developer with experience in creating automatic, connected address books -- a perfect fit for a web giant that has been revamping its email and social services. Neither of the new partners is talking about what they'll create together, although Xobni is no longer accepting new customers for its paid services and has pulled downloads for both Smartr Contacts on Android and Xobni for BlackBerry. It's a gentler transition than we've seen with other takeovers, although we wouldn't get too comfy when most of Xobni's services go dark after July 2nd of next year.

Update: Our colleagues at TechCrunch hear that the acquisition price may be over $60 million.

Yahoo acquires video sharing startup Qwiki

If you thought Marissa Mayer was done snatching up companies and was ready to turn her focus internally, you were wrong. Clearly the CEO sees no reason why the company can't handle both simultaneously. So, while the forgotten brands are shuttered and the merely struggling ones given fresh coats of paint, new products are joining the Yahoo family. The latest addition is bouncing baby iOS app called Qwiki: a standout from TechCrunch Disrupt 2010, at which Mayer was a judge. The startup combines Vine-like social video sharing with Zoe-esque filters, photo transitions and soundtracks to create "stories." After you've collected and edit your material, you can post your Qwiki (apparently the creators have a slightly sophomoric sense of humor) for others to see. Obviously the purchase is meant to keep Yahoo competitive with Facebook and Twitter, which have their own respective video sharing platforms. If you mosey on past the break you'll find a pleasant little celebratory video from the latest startup to sell out.

Update: Unfortunately it appears that Qwiki's servers are a little overwhelmed right now. We'll add the video back when the service comes back online.

Update 2: And, the story of Qwiki and Yahoo is back online for your viewing pleasure.

Yahoo Shareholder Finds Worst Possible Way to Hit On Marissa Mayer [Updated]

Ugh.

On account of being a stylish and confident woman in the male-dominated tech world, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is no stranger to gross dudes treating her like some kind of exotic animal. But at a Yahoo shareholder meeting today, a shareholder reached what is (hopefully?) the apex of skeezy objectification.

"I have 2,000 Yahoo shares, I'm Greek, I'm a dirty old man and you look attractive," one shareholder told her, according to numerous Twitter reports, in a preface to what I'm sure was a thoughtful and probing question about Yahoo's dividend.

Mayer reportedly brushed the remark off and kept going, which is admirable. Lesser CEOs would have smacked him with a Lean In hardcover and had him escorted out by security.

Update: Greek tech investor George Polis is apparently the culprit.

Report Yahoo becomes the latest company to place a bid on Hulu

The rumors on the potential sale of Hulu started circulating again a couple of months back. Now, according to AllThingsD, Yahoo is joining other big-name companies (such as Time Warner Cable and DirecTV) in the race to try and acquire the streaming service. Per the always-insightful sources "familiar with the process," Marissa Mayer & Co. submitted a bid for Hulu just this morning, though there are no details on how much the company is willing to spend on the video site. Something tells us we'll know more soon enough, but we can say with confidence that Yahoo is starting its holiday shopping really early.

Yahoo to Hold News Conference Amid Tumblr Acquisition Rumors

Samantha-murphy By Samantha Murphy2013-05-17 20:45:20 UTC

Following rumors that Yahoo is in talks to buy blogging platform Tumblr for an estimated $1 billion, the company has sent members of the press invitations to a mysterious event it is holding next week.

The event, which will be held at 5:00 p.m. ET in New York City on Monday, includes the tagline on the invitation: "Join us as we share something special."

Yahoo Press Event Invitation

Company CEO Marissa Mayer is expected to speak at the product-related news event, according to CNBC.

The news comes as reports indicated this week Yahoo is closing in on a deal to buy Tumblr, which would make the transaction — if it's $1 billion — the largest since Facebook bought Instagram in 2012.

Yahoo confirms acquisition of Tumblr, but will run it as a 'separate business'

Hot on the heels of yesterday's rumors, Yahoo and Tumblr have jointly announced a "definitive agreement" for the former to acquire the latter for $1.1 billion. The agreement makes it clear that Tumblr will be "independently operated as a separate business" with its own branding and line of development. A frankly worded press release says that this arms-length arrangement will help Yahoo "not to screw it up" and promises that the 300 million monthly visitors to the blogging site will continue to experience Tumblr's "irreverence, wit, and commitment to empower creators." If all this is to be believed, those who have allegedly fled to WordPress, for fear of Tumblr being shut down or re-versioned, may have slightly jumped the gun.

WordPress CEO sees 72,000 blogs imported from Tumblr after Yahoo rumor breaks

WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg has spoken out in an attempt to capitalize on Yahoo's rumored $1.1 billion acquisition of rival blogging service Tumblr. He claims that once the news broke on Sunday, blog post transfers from Tumblr to his own site rose from 400 to 600 per hour to over 72,000 -- which presumably included users put off by Yahoo's track record of shutting down its acquisitions (like Del.icio.us, Geocities and Broadcast.com). If that figure is true, then Marissa Mayer's probably going to have to answer some rather awkward questions in a few hours.

Yahoo to acquire Tumblr in $11 billion cash deal

That cat's out of the bag a day early, it seems. Yahoo's board has approved a $1.1 billion cash deal to purchase the blogging site Tumblr, according to The Wall Street Journal. We were expecting Yahoo to announce the acquisition during tomorrow's NYC media event -- CEO Marissa Mayer may instead use the last-minute gathering to detail the company's plans for integrating the popular platform. It's unclear how Yahoo intends to utilize its latest procurement, but with a 10-figure price tag now public, we can only imagine that Tumblr will be put to good use. We'll be covering tomorrow afternoon's event live, so stay tuned for more details from New York City.

Yahoo rumors ahead of Monday's event include $11 billion Tumblr buy, Flickr updates

Earlier today, Yahoo sent press invites to a "product-related" event in New York City Monday afternoon and there are already two separate rumors about the company's plans. The first, from Bloomberg, concerns the event specifically and cites a "person familiar with the matter" reporting we'll hear about new updates for Yahoo's once-mighty Flickr photo service. The second is from AllThingsD which has upgraded rumors of a Tumblr purchase from possible to possibly imminent, saying the company's board will meet Sunday to decide whether it will make a $1.1 billion all-cash offer for the site. Since new CEO Marissa Mayer took over Yahoo has made a number of acquisitions with a focus on improving its homepage, content and app offerings including Flickr. That announcement is also penciled in for the 20th, but whatever actually goes down you can be sure we'll have the details as they're unveiled around 4PM ET.

Yahoo Earnings Beat Estimates, But Core Problems Remain

Marissa-mayerSeth Fiegerman2013-04-16 20:49:16 UTC

Yahoo's profits in the first quarter beat Wall Street estimates, but the company's core advertising business still appears to be heading in the wrong direction.

Yahoo reported earnings-per-share of $0.38 on revenue of $1.07 billion for the March quarter, beating the consensus estimate for earnings of $0.24 per share, but coming in below the $1.1 billion in revenue that analysts had expected. The stock declined by as much as 4% in after hours trading following the earnings release.

Search revenue increased by 6% from the same quarter a year ago to $384 million, but that wasn't enough to offset falling advertising revenues. Display revenues were particularly disappointing, declining by 11% year-over-year to $402 million, and price-per-click decreased 7%. Yahoo's $1.1 billion in revenue was down from $1.22 billion in the March quarter of 2012.

The earnings report confirms that Yahoo and its new CEO Marissa Mayer are making headway on search, but have yet to figure out how to staunch the bleeding from display revenue, which is a key part of the business.

In a statement, Mayer emphasized that Yahoo's business is stabilizing and her team is taking steps for long-term growth. "We saw continued stability in our business, strengthened our team, and started the year with fast execution against our products and partnerships," Mayer said. "We are moving quickly to roll out beautifully designed, more intuitive experiences for our users. I’m confident that the improvements we’re making to our products will set up the Company for long-term growth."

Mayer, who joined Yahoo from Google in July, has attempted to change the company's culture by initiating regular town hall meetings and free food — common at other Silicon Valley companies — and by forcing all employees to report in to the office rather than working from home. Mayer has also acquired six startups including Stamped, Jybe and OnTheAir to bring engineering talent to Yahoo and build up its mobile team.

Some of these moves have generated a fair amount of criticism, including the work-from-home decision, Mayer's determination to personally approve every new hire and Yahoo's recent $30 million acquisition of Summly, a mobile news startup run by a 17-year old. Even so, investors have remained confident in Mayer and the stock has generally continued on an upward trajectory.

Yahoo's stock has been hovering just below $25 in recent days, its highest level in nearly five years and an increase of about 50% from where it was six months ago, as investors have shown renewed optimism in the company and Mayer's leadership.

Marissa Mayer Tells Inside Story of How Yahoo Wooed Her

Mayer2013-03-29 21:30:16 UTC

Marissa Mayer was originally planning a six-month maternity leave, but shortened that to two weeks after she got the CEO job at Yahoo, she revealed in a blog post on Friday.

Mayer's contribution, on Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In blog, tells the inside story of her frame of mind when Yahoo came calling:

On June 18th, I got the call.

“I’m doing a CEO search. It’s a Fortune 500 company. It’s in the consumer Internet space. It’s in Silicon Valley — you wouldn’t even have to move. It’s the perfect job for you. The board is asking for you by name. Are you interested? It’s Yahoo.”

Mayer writes that she had gotten similar calls before, but was intrigued because she was a Yahoo fan:

... this time it was Yahoo, and that changed everything. I started using Yahoo before it was even called Yahoo. Yahoo defined the Internet. They helped get Google started. Yes, they had their ups-and-downs — but, the potential was huge. The alignment with my experience and career was uncanny: search, email, homepage, news, finance, maps, social, mobile and more.

One hitch, though. Mayer was 28 weeks pregnant and looking forward to a "glorious six-month maternity leave" after 13 years at Google.

However, if I took the new job, a long leave couldn’t happen. The responsibilities were too big, and time was of the essence — it just wouldn’t be fair to the company, the employees, the board, or the shareholders for me to be in the role, but out for an extended period of time.

Despite the truncated maternity leave, Mayer reports that everything is working out fine:

I’ve now been at Yahoo for eight months, and I’m having a ball — there are great people and terrific ideas. It’s hard work, but I love to work hard. At the same time, starting a family with my husband has been all I hoped it would be and then some — joyful, intense, challenging. At five and a half months old, Macallister is tremendously fun — a big personality already. I live to spend time with him — be it to teach him sounds and songs, play a game of peek-a-boo (his latest obsession), or be his sidekick as he explores the world around him.

I’ve come to realize that being a mother makes me a better executive, because motherhood forces prioritization. Being a mom gives you so much more clarity on what is important. I’m very close to my own mother; she has always been my most important role model. I’m grateful to her and to my father for a lifetime of their love, attention, teaching and sacrifice. Over the past five short months, my appreciation has grown for all parents, especially those balancing work obligations, because I know they have that same clarity of dedication and purpose.

Of course, not everyone will be sympathetic to Mayer's situation. She has already been criticized for building a nursery for her child in the office while famously forbidding other Yahoo employees from working from home.
