Just over 18 months after making its video debut, the Navy's electromagnetic railgun has a manufacturer. BAE Systems -- known for e-ink-powered tank camouflage, autonomous spiderbots and machine-gun-mounted lasers -- won the government contract and hopes to have phase-two prototypes ready "as early as next year." While the current design is capable of firing one shot, the Office of Navy Research hopes for six to ten shots per minute. If that doesn't scare you, consider this: The pulse-driven projectiles travel at Mach 6 and can hit targets over 100 nautical miles away. Don't worry, it's not too late to rethink that career of sailing the high seas as a pirate and get to work on that accounting degree instead.

Cleavage Cutouts Galore at the BET Awards

The red carpet at last night's BET Awards was a parade of sassy cleavage windows, sheer panels, and crop tops. Between Taraji P. Henson, Ashanti, Ciara, and Meagan Good, there was more bared torso (both overt and subtle) than any red carpet has seen in a while. But no one managed to outdo Nicki Minaj, who hit all three of these trends during her multiple costume changes. Let's review.

Minaj began the evening in a silver bustier with not just one but two corsets laced up to her boobs, which sparkled like twin disco balls. She also wore garter-type straps tethered to a gem-encrusted belt, which were later used to secure her to the gyroscope she performed in while suspended from the ceiling. The rest of her outfit was surprisingly normal-looking — just dark jeans and silver heels that, in a surprising twist, didn't even have a platform. Her hair was relatively understated too — a sleek blonde bob with dark roots. All this leads us to believe that she's entering a new, pared-down phase.

For her second performance, Minaj wore a clingy black tank top, loose leather pants, and wedge sneakers. She made up for her outfit's simplicity with a stack of thick gold chains around her neck, but still — you see girls dressed like this on the subway every day. Where was the pink face paint and the crazy bondage dresses?

Finally, for the formal portion of her wardrobe, she wore a long black gown with slits at the waist and a generous cutout that encased her cleavage like a picture frame. It was a flashy outfit, sure, but in the realm of her usual ensembles it was practically a bathrobe. (Incidentally, she's also stopped doing crazy facial expressions on red carpets. Interesting.) Still, we can get on board with a more toned-down Minaj. Every girl needs to simplify now and again, and she's at the point of her career where she doesn't need to wear crazy things to draw attention to herself.

Hillary Clinton Made a Pantsuit Joke at the CFDA Awards

You know, I have been thinking, now that I have some more time on my hands, I am going to be pitching Andy and others on a new show for Bravo, to fill that gap that is so apparent to some of us. All you really need is a small but passionate audience to be successful. We could call it "Project Pantsuit." We have all kinds of ideas. So just call me after tonight, Andy.

The reason I'm here is to honor a great American industry, all of you, and a great American designer. I was privileged to be a Senator from this magnificent state, and among my great pleasures was representing the fashion industry, because this is the capital of the fashion industry of the world, as you know so well. [Applause.]

And it is a special evening for me to join you in recognizing a great American designer and a great friend, Oscar de la Renta... I first met Oscar de la Renta in December of 1993. I was hosting, along with my husband, the annual gathering for the Kennedy Center Honors, and there was a receiving line in the White House. People were coming through and exchanging small talk and making pleasantries, and along came Oscar and Annette, his fabulous wife. So I reached out to shake Oscar's hand, and he looked me up and down, and he said, "That's one of my dresses." I said, "Really?" [Makes a nervous face.] I was then, as I am now, such a fashion icon myself. [Laughter.] So I said, "Really, well, I bought it to wear for this occasion." And he said, "Well, turn around." And I thought, "Oh my god, I'm being examined by Oscar de la Renta!" 

But it started a great friendship that has meant the world to me and to my family as we have spent time together, laughed together, and worked together over these past 20 years. 

The Founders Award, given in memory of Eleanor Lambert, the empress of Seventh Avenue, honors an individual who has made a unique contribution to the world of fashion. I really can't think of anyone more deserving than Oscar. Simply put, he is an American icon. His style and personality have permeated our culture and shaped the industry for decades. His name alone evokes elegance and timeless beauty, and his designs give each of us a chance like we're special too.

Experiencing the flair of Oscar as a designer is one thing. Going to his beloved Dominican Republic is something that just transports you to another level. His life, his work, his great immigrant story contributing to this magnificent melting pot, and the coming together of diverse ideas, cultures, and backgrounds really does make us who we are as Americans, and reminds us that we are so much stronger in our diversity.

As I have traveled around the world and really seen so many people making their contributions to try to make a better future, I know that Oscar performs not only on the runway with the models wearing his clothes, but in ways that maybe you don't know about. I remember very well visiting an orphanage that he started in the Dominican Republic, one that made such a difference to the lives of the children who he was giving a better start to than they would have ever had. That orphanage and day care center that he founded has really changed the lives of so many children. To me it was every bit as beautiful — walking through it and holding the children and watching him interact with them — as his finest designer gowns. 

Eleanor Lambert's motto was "Don't look back." Oscar de la Renta has spent his whole life looking forward, marrying classic style with contemporary edge and always working tirelessly on behalf of this industry he loves and serving twice as president of the CFDA. So for many reasons that you understand as well as I, please join me in welcoming our friend and a great American, Oscar de la Renta.

Hillary Clinton Will Indeed Attend the CFDA Awards!

It's official! Hillary Clinton will attend the CFDA Awards on Monday night to present the Founders Award to her old pal and number-one outfitter Oscar de la Renta. Maybe she'll even reprise the sleeves she wore the last time she went, in 2002 ... but probably not. Let this be a lesson to all the Johnny Depps of the world who say they're "too busy" to collect their CFDA honors: If Hillary can make it, you have no excuse.

Webby Awards Unlock Internet Time Machine

The Webby Awards mark 16 years of honoring Internet excellence with a digital skip down memory lane.

The Oscars of the Web teamed up with Internet Explorer to launch the Winners Gallery + Archive, an interactive digital history book documenting nominees of past years. Rather than simply list the winners in text, the project pictures how all the nominees looked the year they battled for the honor.

Diving into the awards' early days is an explosion of nostalgia for anyone who remembers a web world filled with pixelated GIFs and rampant white space. Screen captures for sites like The Netizen and Migraine Boy could make early web lurkers feel seriously sentimental.

"We definitely thought about [the nostalgia factor] a lot," David-Michel Davies, Executive Director of The Webby Awards told Mashable. "Once we got all the material and data and started seeing it first hand, it really struck us how much has changed in such a short amout of time — to think about all the milestones and huge changes in just five or 10 years."

The archive isn't all 1990s flashbacks, though. Users can navigate through more than a decade of web changes and growth. In 1997, 70 million people used the Internet (or surfed the web, as we'd say back then) and the Webbys handed out 14 awards. By contrast, in 2012, 2.4 billion people connected to the Internet and the Webby Awards expanded to honor 238 winners.

"The Webby Awards mirrored the type of change we've seen in Internet culture and pop culture," Davies said. "When we started, we knew it was plainly obvious that the web would have a major impact on the world. Now we're seeing that change realized. All different parts of the Internet have come together and become the central driving force of change in the world."

The site, created by design firm Area17, includes a search feature that allows users to see how their favorite 'Net stuff has stacked up against the competition.

Davies told Mashable that the project aims to please two different types of users. The first: people in the Internet and design industries who can look at the evolution of the web during the past 10 years and find inspiration to generate new ideas that will become the future of our online experience. The second type of people are the general population — the 2.4 billion online — with an interest in Internet culture who will be able to easily navigate the archive on their laptop, tablet, mobile or PC.

Users can even help complete the project. The archive has a crowdsourced element that asks visitors to submit screen grabs and design credits for nominees currently listed without imagery. Someone out there must know the geniuses behind the original Mr. Showbiz, right?

The nominations for the 17th annual Webby Awards will be announced April 9 and the winners on April 20.

MTV Moves Video Music Awards to Brooklyn's Barclays Center

MTV's Video Music Awards is saying goodbye to Los Angeles and hello to New York City borough Brooklyn for this year's ceremony, MTV just revealed on Instagram.

The VMAs will air live from Barclays Center on Aug. 25, becoming the first major annual show to make Brooklyn its host. MTV began teasing the announcement Monday at 8 a.m. EDT in a series of photos accompanied with hashtag #RoadToTheVMAs.

"In announcing this year’s date and location, we wanted to create a visual story that slowly gave the show’s inherently social fanbase clues to create a conversation and stir excitement," MTV President Stephen Friedman told Mashable.

#RoadToTheVMAs spotlights the VMA moonman's trek from L.A.'s Staples Center to Brooklyn, which ended at Barclays Center at 1:30 p.m. (see all images below).

"From hip-hop to hipsters, Jay Z to MGMT, Brooklyn musicians have a long history of dominating the spotlight on MTV," Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said in a statement. "Brooklyn is a cultural Mecca — the hippest, coolest place for young people across the country, and has played a crucial role in the careers of some of 2013's biggest bands, like Fun and the Lumineers.”

MTV was the first brand to reach 1 million followers on Instagram in November 2012. The @MTV Instagram account now has 1.2 million and 906 images.

Last year's VMAs attracted 12.8 million comments on Twitter and Facebook. Based on stats from MTV's Twitter Tracker, these moments stood out with the social media crowd:

5. Olympian Gabby Douglas Joins Alicia Keys Onstage: 14-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys performed the title track from her forthcoming album, Girl on Fire, and she had a sporty surprise for viewers. Keys brought out Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas (see above), who showcased gymnastics swagger.

4. Rihanna Wins Video of the Year: Rihanna bookended the VMAs, opening the show with two songs and then closing it by winning Video of the Year for "We Found Love." The steamy video had previously caused controversy when it was banned in France last year.

3. Green Day Rocks Staples Center Crowd: An ill Billie Joe Armstrong lead Green Day in "Let Yourself Go," the first single from ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tre!, which drops Sept. 25. Armstrong spent loads of time with fans in the pit, hopefully keeping his germs to himself.

2. Taylor Swift Sings Her Hit Single: Decked in a red-and-white striped top, T-Swizzle channeled her inner Where's Waldo during her "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" performance. At the end, of course, MTV zoomed in on Twilight's Taylor Lautner, who had previously dated Swift.

Frank Ocean Shines in Emotional Performance: Frank Ocean, who in July revealed that his first "true love" was with a man before releasing his critically acclaimed Channel Orange album, gave a touching performance of "Thinking of You." Twitter users reacted in droves, making this the most-tweeted moment.
