Microsoft really, really doesn't want your Xbox One's online services going offline. In a near $700 million investment ($677.6 million), the company's opening a new data center in Iowa specifically aimed at powering Xbox Live and Office 365. Microsoft's Christian Belady told Iowa's Des Moines Register that the data center "supports the growing demand for Microsoft's cloud services" -- a much lauded function of both the Xbox One and Office 365. Alongside the $700 million investment, the company's getting a $6 million tax rebate from the state to move in, effective for five years. As for Microsoft's cloud, we'll assuredly hear more about it -- for both Xbox One and Office 365 -- this week at Build.

Behold, a ready-made answer for those who own a Linux-powered fruit machine but who are still looking for new ways to use it. It's a simple media center starter kit, fresh out and shipping today, which makes it easy to hook your Raspberry Pi up to an HDMI display and use it to play video or music from the internet or your home network through the wonders of XBMC. Known simply as "XBMC Solution," it consists of the Raspbmc software on a bootable SD card (this is an all-in-one install that combines XBMC with a lightweight Linux distro), a rechargeable RF controller with a small keyboard and touchpad to aid navigation (it's generic, unbranded, and even has a "Win" key, but it works fine), plus Ethernet and HDMI cables in case you don't have any going spare. The kit isn't wildly different from those you can pick up on eBay, or that could be gathered together more cheaply from constituent parts (Raspbmc being entirely free and open source), but it comes with Element14's promise that it'll work smoothly and it's designed to be up and running within minutes. That's something we can vouch for, at least -- once we'd allowed the application and OS to update themselves automatically over the web, it took just a few moments longer before we were playing FLAC music files off a USB stick, adding libraries from the network and checking on the weather. What's more, XBMC is a tinkerer's paradise in its own right, with plenty of add-ons to choose from, so the bundle's ease-of-use doesn't feel like it conflicts with Pi's underlying DIY philosophy. The kit will be available globally through Element 14, with a UK price of £45.99 -- and yes, that's a lot more than the little computer itself. Update: Newark Element14 is selling the bundle for $78 in the US, but its site lists just a handful of units in stock right now.

Facebook's first European data center in Luleå, Sweden (near the Arctic Circle) is now online, and thus far it's the only facility that's exclusively using servers the company itself designed. Similar to the social network's North Carolina complex that served as testing ground for its outdoor air-cooling configuration, the Swedish facility takes advantage of the region's frigid winds. Excess heat produced by the machines is then routed to offices to keep employees warm in the chilly region. The firm claims the 900,000-square-foot center is powered entirely by hydroelectric energy -- a source so reliable that Facebook saw it fit to scale down the number of backup generators by more than 70 percent. With an average power usage efficiency (PUE) of 1.07, the servers should consume 1.07 watts of energy for each watt they need to function pointing to minimal energy loss. Now that the Luleå installation is complete and operational, the company can focus on building its $1.5 billion megastructure (its biggest data center yet) in Altoona, Iowa.

You know how it goes, you buy a phone on eBay, and it comes with a developer / pre-release version of a major mobile OS. Well, if these images are to be believed, that's at least what happened to one bargain-hunting Windows Phone fan. The screenshots -- said to be taken from a Nokia 920 -- show Windows Phone 8, but with a few new tweaks and features. Most notable, will likely be the notifications, but other tidbits include App list ordering based on frequency of use, week view in the calendar and the option to kill apps from the multitask screen. The phone reports a build number of: 12084.WPMAIN(wpbldlab).20130509-1407 leading some to infer that this version could have been compiled sometime in May. A tease of something to come? As always, hard to tell, but expect the price of second-hand 920s to bump up a little, for the next few weeks at least.

Google has just secured the services of an entire 72MW wind farm in Maevaara, Sweden for the next ten years to keep its Finnish data center humming, according to the official blog. It brokered the deal through German insurer Allianz, which purchased the farm and will begin selling all the electricity it produces to Mountain View by 2015. The move is part of Google's quest to remain carbon neutral, and is along similar lines to a recent deal which saw the search giant purchase 48MW of energy from a wind farm in Oklahoma. The news follows Apple's announcement that it gets 75 percent of its power from renewable sources -- showing the arch-foes can at least agree on something.

MTV Moves Video Music Awards to Brooklyn's Barclays Center

MTV's Video Music Awards is saying goodbye to Los Angeles and hello to New York City borough Brooklyn for this year's ceremony, MTV just revealed on Instagram.

The VMAs will air live from Barclays Center on Aug. 25, becoming the first major annual show to make Brooklyn its host. MTV began teasing the announcement Monday at 8 a.m. EDT in a series of photos accompanied with hashtag #RoadToTheVMAs.

"In announcing this year’s date and location, we wanted to create a visual story that slowly gave the show’s inherently social fanbase clues to create a conversation and stir excitement," MTV President Stephen Friedman told Mashable.

#RoadToTheVMAs spotlights the VMA moonman's trek from L.A.'s Staples Center to Brooklyn, which ended at Barclays Center at 1:30 p.m. (see all images below).

"From hip-hop to hipsters, Jay Z to MGMT, Brooklyn musicians have a long history of dominating the spotlight on MTV," Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said in a statement. "Brooklyn is a cultural Mecca — the hippest, coolest place for young people across the country, and has played a crucial role in the careers of some of 2013's biggest bands, like Fun and the Lumineers.”

MTV was the first brand to reach 1 million followers on Instagram in November 2012. The @MTV Instagram account now has 1.2 million and 906 images.

Last year's VMAs attracted 12.8 million comments on Twitter and Facebook. Based on stats from MTV's Twitter Tracker, these moments stood out with the social media crowd:

5. Olympian Gabby Douglas Joins Alicia Keys Onstage: 14-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys performed the title track from her forthcoming album, Girl on Fire, and she had a sporty surprise for viewers. Keys brought out Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas (see above), who showcased gymnastics swagger.

4. Rihanna Wins Video of the Year: Rihanna bookended the VMAs, opening the show with two songs and then closing it by winning Video of the Year for "We Found Love." The steamy video had previously caused controversy when it was banned in France last year.

3. Green Day Rocks Staples Center Crowd: An ill Billie Joe Armstrong lead Green Day in "Let Yourself Go," the first single from ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tre!, which drops Sept. 25. Armstrong spent loads of time with fans in the pit, hopefully keeping his germs to himself.

2. Taylor Swift Sings Her Hit Single: Decked in a red-and-white striped top, T-Swizzle channeled her inner Where's Waldo during her "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" performance. At the end, of course, MTV zoomed in on Twilight's Taylor Lautner, who had previously dated Swift.

Frank Ocean Shines in Emotional Performance: Frank Ocean, who in July revealed that his first "true love" was with a man before releasing his critically acclaimed Channel Orange album, gave a touching performance of "Thinking of You." Twitter users reacted in droves, making this the most-tweeted moment.
