Earlier than expected (and a little pricier than we'd hoped), the BlackBerry Q5 will go on sale tomorrow in the UAE. We know that its radios are primed for AT&T 3G and while the build might not rival the flagship BB10 device, it's another option for those who can't relinquish the tactile joys of a physical keyboard. It will launch priced at 1,499 AED (just above $400), which nets you BlackBerry's latest OS spread across a 3.1-inch touchscreen with the aforementioned keyboard nestled below. Interested in hopping on a red-eye flight for the third device since the company's name change? Then we'd recommend reacquainting yourself with our first impressions. when.eng("eng.perm.init")Thursday, September 19, 2013

World War Z 'Mega Ticket' trial brings early screenings, bonuses for $50

Now that viewers can get excellent movie theater experiences at homes, studios and theaters are trying different strategies to keep bringing them in. Tomorrow night, Paramount will try a new tactic: offering buyers of its $50 "Mega Ticket" an early viewing of World War Z in 3D, plus a pair of collectible 3D glasses, a movie poster, an HD digital copy of the movie when it's available on Blu-ray, and a small (seriously?) popcorn. We're not sure if making it more expensive to go to the movies is the right way to go, but maybe it's worth it for those who are really hyped about the film. The viewing is only available at a few Regal Theaters, listed after the break if if you're interested in what's listed as $75 worth of value.

Katy Perry’s First Vogue Cover Leaked Early
Here is Katy Perry, nestled in tall grass like a newborn lamb, her powdered face turned toward Annie Leibovitz's lens like a flower to the sun for her very first-ever Vogue cover. (It bears a striking resemblance to Anne Hathaway's December cover, no?) She's wearing Rodarte, which is definitely a step up from her cupcake bras and aggressive keyhole cutouts of yore.
But wait, how are we supposed to interpret that ring on her wedding finger? The headlines do hint that we'll hear about her love life — does this mean she'll discuss John Mayer? Or Russell Brand, who is now supposedly making out with Andre Balazs's daughter, of all people? What about Robert Pattinson? Alas, these questions won't be answered until Tuesday, when the full accompanying spread and cover story will come out. (And probably when the cover was supposed to go up, had it not leaked early on the Fashion Spot.)
Also of note: This cover reveals that the July issue will contain a story about Alexander Wang "Rebooting Balenciaga," which will surely be fluffy but hopefully interesting, as well as a feature about women who have to choose between a "good mood or good sex," which sounds unfortunate.

Early Xbox One buyers to get Day One Edition consoles

Let's say you're excited about the Xbox One... so excited, in fact, that you're okay with spending $499 on it before you've even touched the gamepad. Microsoft wants to accommodate you: buy a system quickly enough and you'll get the limited Day One Edition. While the core system won't change, you'll get to flaunt your early adopter status through both a slightly customized controller and a special Xbox Live achievement. Microsoft is also offering a matching (though separate) Xbox Live 12-month Gold pass that bundles an exclusive Killer Instinct character. If those rarities are enough to encourage an early purchase, you can reserve one through Microsoft and other retailers. Let's just hope that there aren't too many launch day quirks.

Male Gaze: Happy Early Birthday, Kanye West
Tomorrow, Mr. West will enter a year that will undoubtedly change his life. As of now, we know that his 35th year will include a new, little bundle of Kardashian entering into the world, a new album titled Yeezus, and a performance at this weekend's Governors Ball. We also hope this stylish, goatee'd man will continue to make the hip-hop scene gasp at his taste for Margiela masks and Givenchy man-skirts. Click through his look book to relive his fashion history, or just click on the video below to fall back in love with Kanye from his younger days.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8- and 10.1-inch versions to launch worldwide early June
In addition to the Galaxy Tab 3 with a 7-inch display we've known about for a while, Samsung's announced the slate will come in 8- and 10.1-inch varieties, too -- something rumors and FCC filings have long suggested. The 8-inch model has a TFT display sporting a 1,280 x 800 (WXGA) resolution (189 ppi), a 5-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front-facing shooter. It's got vaguely respectable internals: a 1.5GHz dual-core processor (no word on the manufacturer), 1.5GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB storage configurations. A microSD slot is present, supporting up to 64GB cards, and a 4,450mAh battery provides the necessary juice. Android 4.2 is OS of choice -- no surprise there -- and when it arrives, you'll have the choice of WiFi-only (dual-band, a/b/g/n), 3G (HSPA+) and LTE variants. The 10.1-inch version stretches that same WXGA resolution across its display (149 ppi), and carries a smaller 3-megapixel rear camera and the same 1.3-megapixel front-facer. According to Reuters, the 1.6GHz dual-core CPU in this larger slate is provided by Intel, confirming a previous rumor. Unfortunately, it's saddled with only one gig of RAM, and the storage options are the same as the 8-inch model, with a microSD slot also supporting up to 64GB cards. Also running Android 4.2, the 10.1-inch Tab 3 packs a 6,800mAh battery, and comes in WiFi-only, 3G and LTE variants. Both tablets will be available worldwide at the "beginning of June."Samsung 8- and 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 3 press shots

See Early Head Shots of 16 Stars-to-Be
Andrew Brucker was a young, New York–based fashion photographer in 1982 when he got a call that would change his career: A manager asked if he would do some head shots for one of her clients. “I said no, it wasn’t my thing,” says Brucker. “A lot of people looked at head shots as the poor cousin of glamour photography.” So she challenged him to make them better. Which Brucker did, transforming the head shot into something as rich and lush as the old-school, black-and-white portraits of Hollywood masters like George Hurrell. Before long, every serious young actor in New York wanted the Brucker treatment, including Robert Downey Jr., Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Will Arnett, Kerry Washington, and Marisa Tomei. He still takes head shots, though he misses the early days, when actors were a little less business and a lot more punk. Winona Ryder was just 14 when she showed up, alone, without an entourage: “Nowadays I have mothers making arrangements for their 20-year-olds. Everyone was a little looser back then." Andrew Brucker has published his best before-they-were-stars photographs in his new book 8X10 (FVW; $39.00). You can find sixteen of them here.
(8x10 is available at Rizzoli, Dashwood Books, McNally Jackson, 192 Books, St. Mark's Books, Crawford Doyle Booksellers, the Strand, and Spoonbill and Sugartown in New York City, and at Diesel Books in L.A.)

How to get an early look at the new Google Maps with a bit of cookie know-how

We had the opportunity to grab an early look at the new and refreshed Google Maps, but not everyone is as fortunate; you either had to be an I/O attendee or hope you received an invitation after requesting one. However, a tipster has sent Android Police a set of instructions that'll let you get in on the new Maps without those pre-requisites. All you need is the ability to manually set cookies via a Chrome extension like this one or an alternate browser. Then visit the Google Maps page, replace the cookie labeled NID with a special code (we've included it after the break), and voilà, the brand new Google Maps will appear before your eyes. Now you too will be able to enjoy more visually enticing navigation -- just don't expect it to feel like a skydive.

See 'Man of Steel' a Day Early — via Walmart
Stan Schroeder2013-04-24 11:06:11 UTCSuperman fans who want to see "Man of Steel" one day early can do so at Walmart, which has partnered with Warner Bros to sell tickets for an advance screening of the movie.
The tickets will become available May 18 on 8AM ET in more than 3,700 Walmart stores, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The special screening will take place on June 13 — that's one day before the movie's official premiere.
“Walmart’s premiere of Man of Steel once again proves we have the ambition and studio partnerships to develop unique retail programs that give our customers access to the movies they love,” said Walmart U.S. senior vp entertainment Laura Phillips in a statement.

The offer marks the first time that a movie has partnered with a big box store in this manner. While Walmart doesn't get a cut of the ticket sales, it has an extra interest in grabbing the attention of Superman fans — merchandise. The retail chain will start selling "Man of Steel" related products, including t-shirts and electronics, on April 28.
