Nokia Music Mix Party lets friends share an Xbox music stream

We've seen a few attempts at shared audio streaming, but many of these depend on specialized apps or hardware. Microsoft and Nokia could clear that hurdle with their newly launched Nokia Music Mix Party, which leans on what many of us have at home. Xbox 360 owners with an Xbox Live Gold subscription just have to visit a website that starts an artist-based streaming playlist with a custom QR code; after that, anyone in the room with a mobile device can scan the code and vote on which songs should play next. The service is free to use during July, although we don't yet know if and how pricing will change afterward. Is Mix Party simple? You bet -- but it could keep guests happy at future shindigs, even if they don't care for our tastes in music.

MediaTek to launch true 8core, 2GHz MT6592 chipset in November

Samsung may already have its 8-core Exynos 5 Octa offering, but the cunning "big.LITTLE" implementation means only up to four cores work together at any time -- either the Cortex-A15 quartet or its lesser Cortex-A7 counterpart. In other words, we'd rather rename the chipset range to something like "Exynos 5 Quad Dual." But according to recent intel coming from Taipei and Shenzhen, it looks like Taiwan's MediaTek is well on its way to ship a true 8-core mobile chipset in Q4 this year.

The first mention of this 2GHz, Cortex-A7 MT6592 chip came from UDN earlier today. The Taiwanese publication claims MediaTek started introducing its first octa-core product to clients last week, and it's expected to enter mass production using TSMC's 28nm process in November. The first mobile devices to carry this hot piece of silicon are expected to hit the market in early 2014 -- hopefully just in time for the Chinese New Year shopping rush.

UDN adds that the MT6592 scored close to 30,000 on AnTuTu, which is pretty high but still some distance behind Qualcomm's 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800. Of course, chances are MediaTek's offering will be much cheaper, as evidenced by all the affordable MediaTek-powered devices in China these days.

In a separate article from last week, UDN pointed out that judging by over a hundred job openings released by MediaTek last month, the company is clearly putting an emphasis on 4G LTE technology, alongside GPU and Android development. The publication also quoted chairman Tsai Ming-kai saying he will launch an LTE solution in Q4 this year, by which point MediaTek will only be one or two years behind its competitors.

The second piece of info came from HQ Research analyst Pan Jiutang, who posted an alleged spy shot of MediaTek's upcoming roadmap (pictured left). There the octa-core MT6592 is listed with a clock speed of 1.7GHz to 2GHz, along with 1080p 30fps video decoding support. There's also a quad-core 1.7GHz MT6588 accompanying its octa-core sibling in the same period on the timeline, though it appears to be just a faster version of the current 1.2GHz MT6589.

For the sake of phone manufacturers, both new chipsets will apparently be pin-to-pin compatible with the quad-core 1.3GHz MT6582 due Q3 this year, thus lowering R&D costs. Better yet, the roadmap also states that the MT6290 LTE modem -- as teased by Tsai above -- will be compatible with these three chipsets.

With MediaTek quickly catching up ahead of China's eventual TD-LTE launch, Qualcomm will need to tread carefully to keep its Chinese QRD partners happy.

[Thanks, Ryan!]

Apple 'in negotiations' to launch new iPhone with LTEAdvanced in South Korea

This will come too late to be a world first, if it happens at all, but an unnamed insider at SK Telecom claims his company is in talks with Apple to bring out a South Korean version of the "upcoming iPhone 5S" with support for LTE-Advanced. The official, who was quoted by The Korea Times, makes it clear that SK Telecom made the first approach, but says the two parties are now "in the middle of negotiations", implying Apple was receptive to the idea. An LTE-A iPhone could theoretically double the download speed of a regular LTE iPhone 5 in ideal conditions, thanks in large part to carrier aggregation technology that enables downloads over multiple radio channels at the same time. The Korea Times also mentions that Apple might use Qualcomm to deliver LTE-A, but that would likely mean a Qualcomm modem specifically, rather than the Snapdragon 800 used in the South Korean Galaxy S 4, since these days Apple prefers its processors to be homegrown.

Toshiba Announces 4K Image Certification to Deliver Color Accuracy and Image Processing

Technicolor Certification Assures Toshiba Consumers The Best Home Theater Viewing Experience

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Toshiba's Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced it is the first Blu-ray player manufacturer to be awarded 4K Image Certification by Technicolor, a worldwide technology leader in the media and entertainment sector. Technicolor is leveraging its expertise in Hollywood color and imaging science to certify that Toshiba's BDX6400 Symbio® Media Box and Blu-ray Disc™ Player will deliver improved viewing experiences for consumers at home.

"It is an honor to have our 4K media player officially certified by Technicolor"
Today, native 4K content is used for production of Hollywood movies, but it is ultimately reduced in resolution for the home to fit accordingly with existing HD disc formats and display panels. While the industry transitions to native 4K content, it is important that consumers are able to enjoy the high-resolution display of UltraHD 4K TVs with their current HD content.

Additionally, entertainment content increasingly comes from multiple sources beyond cable and satellite, including streaming media players, laptops, game consoles, DVD and Blu-ray Disc players. However, the viewing experience of these sources varies drastically due to uneven levels of video resolution, frame rates and compression formats. Technicolor's Image Certification initiative addresses this dilemma and verifies that Toshiba's 4K Blu-ray Disc player solution will push the industry forward while providing consumers with the best viewing experience for movies.

"It is an honor to have our 4K media player officially certified by Technicolor," said Scott Ramirez, vice president of product marketing and development, Toshiba America Information Systems, Digital Products Division. "Passing Technicolor's thorough certification process is a testament to Toshiba's goal to create the highest quality consumer electronics that are ahead of the curve. Technicolor's 4K Image Certification will be a key differentiator in the market to help consumers discern and identify the best 4K media players."

With Technicolor 4K Image Certified products, consumers can be confident of a 4K source device's ability to deliver a stunning 4K Hollywood movie experience in the home from existing HD content. Technicolor has certified Toshiba's 4K image processing technology that up-scales "less than 4K" content to near 4K quality without inserting image-damaging artifacts.

Combining Toshiba's BDX6400 Symbio Media Box and Blu-ray Disc Player with the L9300U Series UltraHD 4K TV by Toshiba will provide consumers with the most stunning picture quality available for existing HD content.

JetBlue begins FlyFi flight testing, on track for Q3 launch

Adding satellite WiFi to an airplane isn't as simple as mounting an antenna up top and flipping the switch on a router -- even installing a cockpit printer requires FAA approval, so as you can expect, the Federal Aviation Administration won't check off on major modifications without some thorough testing. JetBlue's new Fly-Fi service is well on its way to getting a formal green light, though, and is expected to launch before Q3 is through. This week, the carrier is running through a variety of flight tests with one of its Airbus A320s, including maneuvering the plane with some pretty unusual weight loads, such as the rear center of gravity positioning you can see demonstrated above. After that's complete, it's time to wait for FAA certification before moving onto performance testing, and if all goes well, passengers should expect to hook up to ViaSat-1 from 30,000 feet in mere months. Once Fly-Fi goes online, it'll be by far the fastest commercial in-flight WiFi option -- we really can't wait!

Facebook sends invites to new product launch on June 20th

In case you're interested, June 20th is a Thursday. It's more than that to Facebook, though: apparently that is the day the social network will show off a new product, or as the company puts it, a "big idea" coming from a small team. As to what this particular event -- to be held in Menlo Park -- could bring to the table, you now know exactly as much as we do; with recent talk regarding Facebook's interest in building an RSS reader, that rumor would certainly be a good stab in the dark. What's even more odd, however, is the method by which the press is receiving the invitation: the good old-fashioned postal service. Let us know in the comments if you have any particular theories on what it could all mean.

Finnish carrier DNA confirms it will be the first to launch Jolla phones running Sailfish

DNA to launch the Jolla smartphone as the first operator in the world

This year, DNA will launch the Jolla smart phone based on the Sailfish operating system in Finland. DNA will be the first operator to offer Jolla smartphones in Finland.

DNA will sell Jolla smartphones as the first operator in the world and as the only operator in Finland as soon as they enter the market. Jolla will be available in DNA Kauppa stores and DNA online, as well as at selected DNA retailers. Jolla unveiled its new smart phone in May.

DNA's cooperation with Jolla is a part of the DNA partnership strategy, aimed at providing Finnish people with the most appealing equipment and services on the market. DNA is the only operator to start the Jolla smart phone sales in Finland.

"As a Finnish operator, we consider it important to support this new Finnish success story, in which we see enormous potential. The partnership with Jolla reflects DNA's manner of doing business and is a fantastic example of the way in which we want to be involved in interesting innovations that bring real added value to their users. We boldly apply this start-up mentality to our own operations as well," says Pekka Väisänen, Vice President for DNA's Consumer Business.

DNA has also been involved in the Jolla smart phone's development from the very beginning. "In a spirit of 'co-creation' that is characteristic of Jolla, we have been able to influence the device's design and usability, allowing us to convey our customers' wishes directly to Jolla's development team, already at the design stage", says Väisänen.

"It is valuable to find a good operator as a partner in the domestic market. The cooperation between DNA and Jolla has been extremely rewarding, and we place particular value on the feedback regarding the wishes of customers, received from an operator that knows its clientele. Our two companies are equally enthusiastic about the launch of Jolla smart phones at DNA Stores nationwide during the last quarter," says Jolla CEO Tomi Pienimäki.

The Jolla pre-order campaign started in May at jolla.com. Those interested in the new Jolla mobile and the partnership of DNA and Jolla can leave their contact details with DNA at the address www.dna.fi/jolla.

Amazon offers 'Launch Edition' PS4 for wealthy earlyadopters, instantly sells out

Amazon, with its limited supply of PS4s, has cleaved its product listing into two, to help people get a handle on when to expect their pre-order to arrive. Those who've already stumped up their cash are likely to find they've been assigned a "Launch Edition," guaranteeing that they'll get the console on the first day of release -- and they'll probably have received the explanatory email copied after the break. If Amazon is able to guarantee delivery for more stock, perhaps the Launch Edition will become available again -- or perhaps those who order the Standard edition (which is identical except for the delivery promise) will be automatically upgraded. Either way, it looks like demand has already outpaced launch-day supply at this retailer.

If you thought November 2013 was too long to wait, bear a thought for Asian gamers who will apparently have to wait those six months, plus an additional twelve, to pick up their Xbox One. According to Alan Bowman, Microsoft's Regional VP for Sales and Marketing in Asia, the new console will launch in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and India around late 2014. (Note the lack of Japan on that list, we're still checking with Microsoft on that.) These are all regions that have been marked as gaming high-growth areas by Microsoft -- the VP added that the Xbox 360 became the top-selling console in Asia this year. The company's also pointed to its next-generation Kinect sensor, one that will work in "dramatically reduced" room spaces and, according Bowman, will be better attuned to Asian gamers who might not have living room space in their homes.

Update: We've just heard back from a Microsoft spokesperson who told us the following:

"Microsoft does plan to launch Xbox One, the ultimate new-generation all-in-one entertainment system, in Japan -- we look forward to confirming timing and other details at a later stage."

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8- and 10.1-inch versions to launch worldwide early June

In addition to the Galaxy Tab 3 with a 7-inch display we've known about for a while, Samsung's announced the slate will come in 8- and 10.1-inch varieties, too -- something rumors and FCC filings have long suggested. The 8-inch model has a TFT display sporting a 1,280 x 800 (WXGA) resolution (189 ppi), a 5-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front-facing shooter. It's got vaguely respectable internals: a 1.5GHz dual-core processor (no word on the manufacturer), 1.5GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB storage configurations. A microSD slot is present, supporting up to 64GB cards, and a 4,450mAh battery provides the necessary juice. Android 4.2 is OS of choice -- no surprise there -- and when it arrives, you'll have the choice of WiFi-only (dual-band, a/b/g/n), 3G (HSPA+) and LTE variants.

The 10.1-inch version stretches that same WXGA resolution across its display (149 ppi), and carries a smaller 3-megapixel rear camera and the same 1.3-megapixel front-facer. According to Reuters, the 1.6GHz dual-core CPU in this larger slate is provided by Intel, confirming a previous rumor. Unfortunately, it's saddled with only one gig of RAM, and the storage options are the same as the 8-inch model, with a microSD slot also supporting up to 64GB cards. Also running Android 4.2, the 10.1-inch Tab 3 packs a 6,800mAh battery, and comes in WiFi-only, 3G and LTE variants. Both tablets will be available worldwide at the "beginning of June."Samsung 8- and 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 3 press shots See all photos 9 Photos
