Jessica Simpson Gives Birth to Son, Ace Knute Johnson

Jessica Simpson gave birth to her second child, a boy named Ace Knute Johnson, yesterday, Us Weekly reports. The name is pronounced "Ace Ka-nute," and he is fourteen months younger than sister Maxwell Drew Johnson. Ace and Maxwell's father is former NFL tight end Eric Johnson.

According to the Social Security baby name registry, Ace was the 524th most popular name for newborn American boys in 2012.

Knute was last popular in 1893. Update: Knute "honors Johnson's Swedish grandfather." It has also come to my attention that Ronald Reagan was in a football movie called Knute Rockne All American during his acting days.

If you're still feeling haughty about celebrity baby names, read this article and repent.

Oscar de la Renta Gives More Details on Galliano’s Residency

At 92Y last night, Oscar de la Renta clarified a few things about his collaboration with John Galliano, which lasted for several weeks in January and February of this year. First of all, it turns out that Galliano approached him, not the other way around. Secondly, de la Renta said the collection was almost entirely done when Galliano arrived to lend a hand. Although the former Dior designer, who's getting a juicy profile in Vanity Fair's July issue, departed the fashion house after the fall 2013 show, de la Renta did not rule out the possibility of working with him in the future. His exact quote, via Fashionista:

John came to me because be wanted to re-enter the business. His problems are not my problems. He’s a wonderful guy, unbelievably talented, and we had a wonderful time together. It’s important to have someone that challenges you — 75% of the collection was done by the time he got there. But I think that there were a lot of things that John tweaked around. Everyone in life does deserve a second chance.

And because no one can ever let this matter rest, he was asked about the Michelle Obama kerfuffle yet again, and reiterated that he would love to dress her, thinks she's beautiful, blah blah etc. He gets points for not getting annoyed when people bring it up for the zillionth time:

Finally, he confirmed that his cancer has not returned since 2011, saying, "I am, right now, totally clean." And on behalf of Hillary Clinton and all the other ladies who depend on him, we thank goodness for that.

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Insert Coin: Virtuix Omni VR treadmill gives gamers the run around

If the unison of Virtuix's Omni Treadmill and Oculus Rift got your left thumb hungry for a well deserved retirement, then it'll also want to push you in the direction of the game controller's official Kickstarter. Yup, for just $249 (if you get in there quick enough), you can snag yourself an Omni in DIY kit form plus on set of shoes (additional pairs costing $49). Those with deeper pockets can opt to get the full kit (including belt, tracking hardware and software) from $399, or go all out and get the Omni Rack (for holding your Rift control box, favorite beverage etc) and some exclusive merch on top for $539. Really dig this thing? Then why not lay down $7,999 for a custom design made from wood and steel? Those of you who are still undecided can delve into the project a little further (at the source), but it seems likely that the final retail price could be somewhat higher than that offered to Kickstarter backers so, you know, you might not want to hang around too long.

Previous project update: Sonte's digital shades have still only raised around $25,000 -- an eight of its target. There's still plenty of time though, so if WiFi-enabled blinds are what you've been wishing for, be sure to show it your support.

Palm Pre 2 steampunk mod

Most people would buy a Bluetooth controller if they decide to keep an old phone for gaming, but one particular user from Chinese site Zoopda was struck with a better idea. Kissing his plan to buy a Bluetooth add-on goodbye, he instead spent a weekend adding steampunk-inspired accoutrements to his Palm Pre 2. Check out a video of the tricked out phone in action after the break. It's not in English, but it might give you an idea of what to do with your old handheld devices in case you're looking for something to go with your goggles and Victorian-era laptop.

Fujitsu revamps Eseries Lifebooks, gives Ivy Bridge one last hurrah

Intel's Haswell-based processors may be just around the corner, but the suit-and-tie crowd can't always wait to buy new PCs, can it? Fujitsu has those impatient corporate buyers covered with a refresh to its E-series Lifebooks. The 13.3-inch E733, 14-inch E743 and 15.6-inch E753 all keep on trucking with Ivy Bridge, but come in silver and red designs that are more elegant than what we saw last year. Not that they're just skin-deep upgrades, mind you. The more common configurations tout more recent 2.6GHz Core i5 processors and 500GB hybrid hard drives, while each system can scale up to 16GB of RAM and a Core i7 for extra-demanding work. When prices start at $999, the new Lifebooks may be inexpensive enough to make shoppers feel better about their timing -- at least, for a few weeks.

Microsoft gives students 3GB additional Skydrive storage for one year

There are plenty of cloud storage options out there which offer some initial amount of free space -- including Dropbox (2GB), Google Drive (5GB), Box (5GB) and Microsoft Skydrive (7GB). While these services usually provide additional free storage via referrals and special deals (bundled with device purchases for example), Microsoft is doing something different with Skydrive by gifting students an extra 3GB of free space for one year. If you have a valid .edu email address you can visit the URL below to receive a free storage code. The offer is limited to one per person and the code must be redeemed before December 31st 2013. It's unclear what happens to your data after the year's over but it presumably remains available in read-only form. Considering the price of tuition, this deal isn't quite as juicy as getting 100GB of free space for two years on Google Drive with the purchase of a Chromebook -- still it's a no brainer.

Amazon Gives Away 'Tens of Millions' of Dollars in 'Coins'

Amazon-coins Seth-fiegerman By Seth Fiegerman2013-05-13 17:46:55 UTC

If you own a Kindle Fire, you're now $5 richer — sort of.

Amazon on Monday rolled out Amazon Coins, a virtual currency for Kindle Fire, by giving all registered users of the device 500 free coins, each of which is valued at $0.01. The currency, which Amazon first teased in February, can currently be used to buy games, apps and in-app purchases.

In total, Amazon says it has added "tens of millions of dollars" in Amazon Coins to the accounts of Kindle Fire customers — if you're eligible, you should have received an email notification.

Amazon isn't the first Internet company to introduce a virtual currency for its customers. Facebook launched Credits for buying gifts on the social network, but eventually killed off the currency in 2012.

Offering an alternative currency could potentially boost in-app purchases, which would be a boon to app developers and serve as an incentive for them to give some preference to Amazon over other operating systems. Amazon is also offering discounts to customers who buy Coins in bulk, which locks customers into the Amazon ecosystem that much more.

It remains to be seen whether Amazon will roll out Coins to other product categories besides apps and games, but the possibility is certainly there.

"We will continue to add more ways to earn and spend Coins on a wider range of content and activities—today is Day One for Coins," Mike George, VP of games and apps at Amazon, said in a statement.

Repost.Us Gives Publishers an Easy Way to Syndicate Articles Online

RepostSeth Fiegerman2013-04-20 02:19:25 UTC

The Launchpad is a series that introduces Mashable readers to compelling startups. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here.

Name: Repost.Us

One-Liner Pitch: Repost.Us helps publishers share and embed complete articles on the web, including the original publisher's advertising and branding.

Why It's Taking Off: The startup aims to make it as easy for publishers to share complete articles as YouTube makes it to share videos.

For years, people in the media have been debating the proper etiquette for re-posting portions of an article from one online publication to another. Now, one new startup is trying put this issue to rest once and for all.

Repost.Us, a free service that launched earlier this week, provides publishers with a platform to share and embed full articles in the same way that YouTube lets users embed video clips. Websites can add a Repost button to their articles, which others can click on to re-publish all of the content in the article — along with videos, the original publisher's advertising and branding, and any updates to the article that occur afterwards. Repost also provides a directory of content that publishers can search through and publish on their own website.

"The fundamental problem, we realized, is that it's really hard to share content on the Internet," John Pettitt, the company's founder and CEO, told Mashable in an interview. "People look at me like I'm crazy when I say that. It's easy to share a link, but if you want to share an article, you have to ask permission and manually copy it and make sure you get it right."

Pettitt, a serial entrepreneur who launched multiple companies in the '90s, had been quasi-retired from the tech world in recent years. Yet, he felt inspired to dive back in with Repost after seeing some of his friends struggle with trying to get permission to re-publish articles or, on the flip side, having their own articles lifted with little to no attribution.

"If you look at the history of syndication, you wrote content and sent it over the hill to the next place to run it," Pettitt says. But in recent years, he believes, publishers have chosen to believe in the power of links back rather than risk letting publications syndicate entire articles. "Everybody got stuck in this fiction that they're only one link away so they can come to me."

Much of this, of course, comes down to page views and ad revenue. Until now, if one website took another's article without linking back, the latter publication would be at risk of losing visitors and impressions. But according to Repost, even with a link, the vast majority of readers won't click through to the original website. With Repost, on the other hand, the original publisher can syndicate their content and still get page views and ad revenue from it.

In short, the goal for Repost, according to Pettitt, is to make it easy for big and small publishers to profit from sharing complete articles as it is for content producers to share and profit from videos using the embed code from websites like YouTube.

Repost currently has articles available to re-share from thousands of websites, including Fox Sports, PandoDaily and newspapers like the Times-Picayune. There are about 3.4 million articles in its system right now, with 20,000-40,000 more added each day.

Pettitt says his team has reached out to many publishers and has found that they tend to fall into one of two camps: there are those that get the concept and those that he describes as "Lord of the Rings publishers," which "treat their content as My Precious," and won't let it be sent out elsewhere. As Pettitt himself admits, Repost probably makes more sense for smaller publishers in need of exposure rather than bigger institutions like The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal who may worry about "business cannibalization."

Repost has already received some praise from those in the journalism world. In an announcement for the public launch earlier this week, Repost quoted journalism professor Jeff Jarvis who said that the service "should end the wars over aggregation and copyright."

The startup has six employees and is privately funded, though Pettitt says he is looking to raise a Series A round of funding later this year. Repost generates revenue by placing an ad of its own in the stories that get embedded and by using its service to distribute marketing content.
