Microsoft gives students 3GB additional Skydrive storage for one year

There are plenty of cloud storage options out there which offer some initial amount of free space -- including Dropbox (2GB), Google Drive (5GB), Box (5GB) and Microsoft Skydrive (7GB). While these services usually provide additional free storage via referrals and special deals (bundled with device purchases for example), Microsoft is doing something different with Skydrive by gifting students an extra 3GB of free space for one year. If you have a valid .edu email address you can visit the URL below to receive a free storage code. The offer is limited to one per person and the code must be redeemed before December 31st 2013. It's unclear what happens to your data after the year's over but it presumably remains available in read-only form. Considering the price of tuition, this deal isn't quite as juicy as getting 100GB of free space for two years on Google Drive with the purchase of a Chromebook -- still it's a no brainer.

A formal celebration of Yahoo's acquisition of Tumblr wasn't what the internet outfit had up its sleeve for this evening's festivities. Instead, the company unveiled an update to Flickr at the NYC event with a host of new features that includes a retooled grid UI built out of images and up to 1TB of free storage for users. Yahoo is saying that the advertised storage space is enough room to stash 537,731 "full-resolution" photos per user. On the desktop side, Photostreams and Sets are cleaned up in proper grid fashion as well and a share button rests up top for easy sharing to Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, email and, of course, Tumblr. Single photos will now be displayed full screen -- the size options and white background have been nixed for the extra real estate.

The redesign is also coming to mobile devices on iOS and Android. In fact, the Android update should be available in the Play store as early as tonight. Flickr Pro is no longer available for purchase as many of the features have been tacked on to the free account. However, it appears that current paid subscribers won't encounter any immediate changes. For those that require more space, there's a paid "doubler" option that will up the storage limit to 2TB for $500 per year and an ad-free route is priced at $50 for 12 months. Take a look at the "Biggr" photos in the video walk through on the other side of the break. Flickr web and mobile app redesign See all photos 8 Photos

Google Offers 15GB Unified Storage Across Gmail, Drive, Google+

Google-chromebook Emily-7d5b1d3e6b By Emily Price2013-05-13 19:02:59 UTC

Google is consolidating storage between Drive, Gmail and Google+, now offering users 15GB of free storage shared across all three platforms.

“Life gets a bit easier when your Google products work well together—whether that’s inserting a Drive file into an email or sharing a photo from Drive on Google+. As this experience becomes more seamless, separate storage doesn’t make as much sense anymore,” Clay Bavo, Google’s Director of Product Management said in a blog post announcing the change.

With the new combined storage space you are free to store what you want where you want. So you could in theory have 15GB of files stored in Gmail, but nothing stored anywhere else; or 5GB in Gmail, 9GB in Google Drive, and a few photos hanging out in Google+.

Previously you were restricted to 10GB of free storage in Gmail, and 5GB for Google+ and Google Drive. You were also unable to upgrade Gmail storage past 25GB. Monday's unified storage announcement removes that cap.

Google also updated the Google Drive storage page. The new page has a pie chart breaking down your own personal storage over each platform, and offers easy access for buying more data. Users can upgrade to 100GB of storage, for instance, for $4.99 per month.

Add Storage to an Android Device With This Mini MicroSD Reader

2013-04-06 03:31:39 UTC

If you're running out of space on your Android smartphone or tablet and want a quick fix, two Northern California brothers may have a solution.

Bay Area-based Andy and Rich (no last names identified) were initially frustrated that their Nexus tablet didn't have a built-in SD card reader to expand storage. So they developed a mini MicroSD card reader for Android devices, which plugs into the phone or tablet via micro-USB, as explained in the video above.

While the reader can fit on any Android device with mini-USB, the brothers have only confirmed that it works with certain phone and tablet models they've tested with. But to mount a Class 2 card on your device, they suggest using third party software, like StickMount.

The duo are trying to raise $5,000 on Kickstarter to further develop their mini MicroSD reader. With 29 days left in the Kickstarter campaign, they've received over $1,400 in pledges. Backers who pledge at least $8 can get the card reader.
