America's most sustainable city

It sounds like the future. Whirring electric skateboards, the joyous chatter of children in a distant playground and an unusual absence of petrol-powered machinery. It looks like the future, too. Glistening lakes dotting the background, lawns so lush they're mistaken for artwork and an unmistakable reflection from a vast solar farm that doubles as a beacon of unending hope.

The reality, however, is starkly different. The depictions here are mere conceptualizations, and the chore of concocting the most Jetsonized habitat this side of Orbit City is daunting in every sense of the word.

In 2006, one of the most ambitious community plans in all of Florida rolled into action, with owner Syd Kitson hoping to nearly triple the population of Babcock Ranch by providing some 19,000 homes, a smattering of schools and plenty of retail job opportunities. In essence, he was looking to manufacture an entire city. Three years later, Kitson & Partners announced plans in cooperation with Florida Power & Light to construct the world's largest photovoltaic power station. It would be a facility so enormous it could power homes, schools and scores of businesses across some 17,000 acres of abutting land. The goal was brazenly simple: to not only create "the smartest city," but also the "world's most sustainable city."

Kitson, chairman and CEO of Kitson & Partners, publicly dubbed Babcock Ranch "Southwest Florida's City of Tomorrow." But after watching Florida's real estate market collapse and our nation's infatuation with sustainability take a backseat to just getting out of debt, these grand plans have been indefinitely postponed.

The ambitions are huge -- to build a city where only a few people presently reside.

Nearly three years to the day after the aforesaid trumpet was blown -- and some eight years after Kitson & Partners initially drafted plans for the community -- I blazed a trail to Babcock Ranch's headquarters. It's situated in a quiet region of Punta Gorda that few outside of the Southeast would even associate with a state that markets little other than its powdery white edges.

As the name implies, the destination is actually a working ranch. While I'd been warned that no development had yet taken place, I'd still dreamt up something a little more modern than a renovated 1920s-era barn -- a barn that I had a tough time believing was truly the property's office. Dodging a dusty pickup and a smattering of cattle that seemed unaware of modern traffic urbanities, I took a moment to enjoy the 89-degree heat and the piercing rays delivering it. For miles in either direction, I saw little but swampland, dense forest and plenty of bovines. I drove down a single-lane entrance that ran 2.5 miles. And, most frighteningly, I whisked past a sign that I was certain had advised me to enter at my own peril. It wasn't until Steve Smith greeted me with an outstretched hand that I was sure I'd been led to the right locale. "Welcome to the ranch," he said.

Don't worry; the natives aren't going to be pushed out if the community comes together.

Smith, general manager and vice president of Babcock Ranch, did little to mask his true self. With denim jeans, a well-worn polo and a gentle drawl in his voice, he began to map out his vision of the ranch. "It means different things to different people," he noted, making reference to the unprecedented public-private partnership that Kitson & Partners struck with the state of Florida in 2005. Essentially, K&P agreed to facilitate the transfer of some 74,000 acres of Florida's interior back to the state for the sole purpose of preservation, while keeping around 18,000 available for use as a planned community. "Community," however, is apt to be viewed as an oversimplification. What's happening here is the foundation of an entire village -- a destination that would include housing, schools and industry. Smith gestured to various colored squares on the latest version of the Babcock Ranch map -- a sheet he affectionately called "the cartoon" -- detailing proposed placements of everything from golf courses to a Field Research Site operated by Florida Gulf Coast University. Just down the road, Babcock Wilderness Adventures plans to expand its tourism initiative, further driving interest from outside visitors.

"It'll be like any town that started out as a cross in the road, and part of our mission is to create a place where people want to work, and want to live," Smith said. Along the northern border of the community sits a 443-acre plot of fallow land, labeled "Solar Field," highlighted on "the cartoon" in blue to differentiate it from the Eco-Lodge to its immediate right and the turf fields below. That sole plot made this planned development different from any other the world has seen to date. Not only was it reserved for a monolithic array of solar panels designed to power an entire city, but it was also for something that proved an ethos. Kitson has been exceptionally bold about what he hopes Babcock Ranch will become: "A new city where innovation will abound -- with planned state-of-the-art infrastructure to assure businesses and residents have full access to emerging technologies for communications, energy, education and transportation." It's a message that seems seared into Smith's mind, but I got the sense it was a far more pragmatic message in the past than it is today.

For three years now, K&P (along with Florida Power & Light) has lobbied local lawmakers to approve the necessary price hikes that would enable a massive capital expenditure to occur. An expenditure that would lead to the outlay of hundreds of thousands of solar panels across an otherwise nondescript tract of land in one of the sunniest spots on Earth. Even when pressed, Smith wouldn't confirm the estimated cost of the 75-megawatt solar array. To give you an idea, the Tinton Falls Solar Farm in New Jersey employs some 85,000 ground-mounted solar panels across 100 acres of land. It cost $80 million to build. Closer to home, a 74-megawatt solar array was planned in 2010 to power some 12,000 homes across Walton County in Florida's panhandle; the $300 million price tag is still waiting to be paid.

Smith confessed that Florida Power & Light, a subsidiary of publicly traded NextEra Energy, would only need to charge each of its customers "pennies" extra per month in order to get the field going, but regulators have been adamantly opposed to increasing rates on a population that's irked by rising unemployment and sinking wages. In fact, the renewable-energy bill that includes the stipulation necessary to kick-start construction has yet to be placed back on the docket for 2013. So, what's a futuristic solar city to do without its solar grid? The same thing every other non-solar city does: turn to coal, oil and gas while it still can.

"As of now, we're hoping to be shovel-ready by early 2014," Smith uttered. "If we can't get the necessary approvals for the solar array by then, we'll use conventional energy until we can have it added."

You see, K&P has been sitting on a huge swath of land for nearly a decade -- land that could be generating a profit as a full-fledged community. As Smith explained, it wasn't sold at a steep loss or simply walked away from during the crash of 2008 due solely to a trio of revenue-generating operations that its new owners were fortunate enough to acquire. Babcock Ranch -- even in its present, undeveloped state -- is bringing in enough cash to pay the bills. Between selling cattle for human consumption, raising turf for homes, parks and golf courses and mining limestone for use in highway construction, there's enough inflow to keep the grander dreams alive.

But it's no longer a critical part of the community. Smith confirmed that the recession "absolutely" impacted the initial concepts, and while the latest drawings haven't nixed the solar field, it's clear from our discussions that this city is happening with or without its token feature. The land's owners have waited for what feels like an eternity to break ground, and as Wall Street celebrates new highs and average home prices begin to rise, K&P senses that the market may finally be ready to accept a new town.

One has to wonder, though: will the self-proclaimed City of Tomorrow ever see the dawning of a new day? As Smith sees it, K&P needs "the ideal political climate" in order to breathe life into a near-mythical 75-megawatt solar array. For a nation that's struggling to deal with some $17 trillion in debt, spending on proactive energy solutions is tough to justify. "It's honestly up in the air," Smith said with a hopeful tone. It's the same tone used when mentioning "next year" in the same sentence as "breaking ground," which -- at this stage -- is still far from certain. Crafting a new development in the current economy is no small task, but building a new town based around renewable energy is another challenge entirely. As Smith so aptly put it, "You've got to pay a lot to enjoy unlimited free energy." As it turns out, it seems that even the Sunshine State isn't quite ready to agree to pony up.

Presently, Florida has refused to join states like California and North Carolina in mandating that its utility companies provide at least a small portion of power through clean sources by a predetermined date. Lawmakers squashed former Governor Charlie Crist's 20 by 2020 plan, which would have "required Florida power companies to produce 20 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources by 2020." It's almost impossible to believe. With an abundance of sunlight, near-endless water sources and plenty of coastal wind, one has to wonder why Florida isn't champing at the bit to be a pioneer in the green-energy transition. Nancy Argenziano, former chairwoman of the Florida Public Service Commission, sees the answer as fairly cut and dry: "Money is stopping it. It has nothing to do with what is better for the country or the state."

California, New Jersey and even Colorado have long eclipsed Florida in terms of total megawatt production from solar harvesting, and regrettably, it doesn't appear that the situation is poised to change anytime soon. Despite the opening of the 25-megawatt, $150 million DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center -- a facility that even President Barack Obama flew down to see open in 2009 -- Florida's solar hopes have dimmed significantly since. The aforesaid plant produces enough clean energy to power 3,000 homes out of Florida Power & Light's 4.5 million customers, but given that solar costs around 70 percent more than coal and gas, the math has weighed heavily on planned projects.

Babcock Ranch has the opportunity to shed a different kind of light on the ongoing battle to spend money we don't have on preserving a world that is in no way guaranteed to last. The public-private partnership proves that there is a desire to develop new cities in a sustainable way, but it also magnifies the red tape involved in making the associated parties agree to terms. Should groundbreaking begin with no clear ETA on the construction of a solar field, green advocates will no doubt be disappointed; but in the likely event that it plays out precisely as such, Smith is still hopeful that clean energy will electrify the ranch in time. Whether any other developer will try to replicate such a herculean chore, however, is altogether more doubtful.

Summer is finally upon us, and polluting companies are feeling the heat as President Barack Obama announced a groundbreaking climate action plan this week that calls for cutting CO2 emissions and building more resilient communities in the face of climate change. Meanwhile, innovators around the world are continuing to tackle some of our biggest challenges. Rust-Oleum launched NeverWet - an incredible new spray that can completely waterproof any surface or object. IKEA unveiled a new solar-powered flat-pack shelter that could be easily deployed as emergency housing. Cardboard Technologies announced plans to mass-produce a $10 bicycle made almost entirely from recycled cardboard. And in one of the week's most exciting green transportation developments, England's Drayson Racing set a new land speed record for electric cars this week, shattering the previous mark by nearly 30 MPH.

It's only July, but 2013 has already been a banner year for Tesla Motors. Now, rumors are starting to circulate that Google will make a bid for the electric car company. In other green transportation news this week, inventor Chip Yates announced plans to fly an electric airplane nonstop from New York to Paris. A Volkswagen Passat TDI set a new world record by achieving 77.99 MPG in a 48-state drive -- the best fuel economy ever for a non-hybrid car. High Speed 2 released the first images of England's new 225 MPH bullet train, and in New York City, Inhabitat speculated on how parked Citi Bikes could be used to generate energy. Inhabitat also teamed up with Linus Bikes to give one lucky reader a bike worth $645.

In an effort to create a better, longer-lasting bike light, Dutch company Rydon created a new solar-powered bike light that can be permanently mounted to any bike frame. Fashion designer Pauline van Dongen unveiled a prototype for a new coat that features a series of solar-powered flaps that unfurl in the sunlight. A pair of researchers at the University of Maryland Robotics Center developed a robo raven that is able to fly by flapping its wings independently of one another. DJ and turntablist Kid Koala released an album that comes with a working DIY cardboard record player that you can assemble yourself. And Lego builder Jason Alleman built a steampunk Lego ship that can crawl around on spiderlike legs.

Apple trademarks new FaceTime logo, settles on green

There's certainly been a lot of brouhaha surrounding the new design language Apple introduced for iOS 7 at WWDC. Some (ourselves included) feel it's modern and fresh while others loathe the brighter palette and simpler, flatter icons. A lot can change between now and the launch of iOS 7 this fall, but if Apple's recent trademark filing is any indication, FaceTime's new logo / icon -- which consists of a stylized white video camera inside a rounded-off green square -- fits squarely (ahem) within the aesthetic we saw on stage in San Francisco. Of course, companies often trademark logos, so we can't really say this comes as much of a surprise, either. This week, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar -- the world's largest solar-powered boat -- docked in downtown Manhattan, and Inhabitat was on the scene to tour the 115-foot Swiss catamaran and learn about its latest trans-Atlantic voyage. The PlanetSolar team isn't the only one pioneering new technologies, though. Google announced plans to deploy fleets of solar-powered balloons to bring the internet to remote locations around the world. A pair of British men debuted the world's first flying bicycle, which combines a bike with a fan-powered paraglider. A 16-year-old developed a cleaner, more efficient way to create biofuel from algae, and Coca-Cola produced a classic Coke bottle that's made entirely from ice that melts away when you're finished with it.

It seems like every week Tesla has a new announcement or unveiling, and this week was no exception, as Tesla demonstrated a system that can swap a depleted Model S battery for a fully charged one in 90 seconds. In other green transportation news, Nissan unveiled the world's fastest electric racing car and Moto Electra set a new record by driving an electric motorcycle across the US in just three days. French EV car-sharing service Autolib announced that it would expand to the US with a 500-vehicle program in Indianapolis. And Bosch teamed up with Evatran to launch a wireless electric vehicle-charging system that could become the first commercially available wireless EV charger in the US.

In a move that's sure to shake up the 3D-printing landscape, MakerBot was acquired by Stratasys in a $400 million deal. Scientists at MIT figured out a way to produce 3D-printed artificial bone that is just as lightweight and durable as the real thing. A pair of architects will unveil the world's first full-size 3D-printed room next month, scientists from Harvard and the University of Illinois managed to 3D print a lithium-ion battery that's about the size of a grain of sand and Biomimicry 3.8 co-founder Janine Benyus explained why she believes biomimicry is the key to a green 3d-printing revolution.

In other green design news, Inhabitat profiled SkinVision, a mobile app that uses your smartphone's camera to detect skin cancer. The EU approved the use of laser tattoos on fruits as a replacement for those annoying little sticky labels. A UC Davis scientist developed a new type of waterproof fabric that drains away sweat, while researchers discovered the secret behind super-durable ancient Roman concrete by studying a 2,000-year-old breakwater in the Mediterranean. Inhabitat profiled Budapest-based company Vinylize, which uses a laser cutter to craft old vinyl records into stylish glasses frames. And to keep your battery from running out while you're away from home, AT&T and Goal Zero rolled out a solar-powered cellphone-charging station pilot program at Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn.

By now "reinventing the wheel" has become a tired euphemism -- but that's exactly what skateboarder David Patrick did when he created the SharkWheel, a cube-shaped wheel that's surprisingly smoother and faster than conventional skateboard wheels. Patrick isn't the only inventor to challenge conventions this week, though. In an effort to develop a more sustainable source of protein, designer Mansour Ourasanah developed a terrarium for growing edible insects in your home. That invention might be a tough sell for some people, but this one is sure to be a crowd-pleaser: English telecommunications company Vodafone unveiled a sleeping bag that uses body heat to charge your gadgets as you sleep and a pair of shorts that harness kinetic energy to charge your cellphone. Meanwhile architect Richard Moreta Castillo unveiled plans for a solar-powered, man-made island that will clean up the ocean while generating renewable energy, and Tokyo installed an impressive bicycle elevator that can store as many as 144 bikes underground.

Three years ago, a team of architects, artists and engineers teamed up to create the Exbury Egg, a self-sustaining, floating office in England. The egg-shaped pod was finally completed last month, and it looks pretty amazing. In other architecture news, London-based design firm Baharash Architecture has been selected to design a massive green residential community in Dubai that will be powered by 600,000 square feet of solar cells. Vincent Callebaut just unveiled plans for the Swallow's Nest, a new zero-energy cultural center in Taiwan that will be shaped like a Möbius ring. Dutch architecture firm MVRDV completed an impressive renovation of a Seoul eyesore, transforming it into a modernist icon that glows from within with colorful LED lights. And Deep Ocean Technology received the green light to move ahead with construction on its underwater Discus Hotel in the Maldives.

In what could prove to be a major breakthrough for renewable energy, a team of scientists in Australia has developed a way to turn seawater into hydrogen, effectively generating a virtually unlimited clean energy source. Mongolia's first major wind energy project, which consists of 31 turbines, just switched online for the first time, hopefully marking the start of a new trend in the windswept country. Wind energy company McCamley has developed a new solar / wind turbine that generates energy from both the wind and sun, and in an effort to replace hazardous kerosene wick lamps, the company d.light has created a series of affordable solar LED lamps for people in rural Asia and Africa.

Bad news for coffee drinkers: A disease known as coffee rust fungus is spreading across coffee plantations in Central America, threatening to wipe out coffee crops. Chodha designed a brilliant mold-detecting bowl that can tell you when your fruit is beginning to go rotten. In 3D printing news, the company Bespoke Innovations has developed a line of beautiful 3D-printed custom covers for prosthetic legs that do away with the one-size-fits-all mentality. And NYC officials have introduced a bill that calls for regulating the production of 3D-printed guns. Things are getting desperate as bee populations continue to dwindle. To address the problem, researchers at Washington State University are creating a bee sperm bank to help diversify the bee gene pool. DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green

Lego just made an announcement that will have geeks around the world salivating: Beginning in September, the company will release a 1-foot-tall Star Wars Ewok Village, complete with tree houses, rope ladders and of course, our favorite furry friends. That's not all -- this week the toy maker also unveiled plans for a new Lego museum in Denmark that looks like a big pile of toy bricks. In other blocky building news, the world's first carbon-negative building brick was just unveiled in the UK, and Studio Liu Lubin created an awesome set of stackable Tetris-style micro houses in China. And in green transportation news, Tesla announced that it will add a fourth car -- a compact SUV -- to its electric vehicle lineup, and Japan just unveiled a new prototype of its ridiculously fast 310MPH maglev train.

Think your Prius gets good gas mileage? A team of students at Brigham Young University designed a new car that can travel 1,300 miles on a single gallon of fuel. And speaking of fueling up, a new charger that can juice up an electric bus in 15 seconds flat is being tested in Switzerland. Siemens is set to harvest energy from speeding trains by installing a new regenerative-braking energy storage system on the TriMet Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Transit Line in Portland. German scientists created a new lithium-ion battery that can maintain its charging capacity for 27 years. And in Chicago this week, architects and car designers participated in the "Big Ideas in Small Spaces Webcast," and you can watch the entire talk on Inhabitat.

In other green design news, Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto's cloud-like Serpentine Gallery Pavilion just opened to the public in London. Architecture firm SOM is the latest high-profile firm to promote building skyscrapers from wood with the publication of the "Timber Tower Research Project." Chinese counterfeiters are at it again -- this time, it's Florentijn Hofman's six-story-tall inflatable yellow duck that they're copying, and Hofman is reportedly not pleased about it. Architecture firm Woods Bagot recently used 200 orange traffic cones to make a big prickly light installation. In green textile news, Nike and NASA teamed up with USAID to launch a competition that calls for the creation of new sustainable materials. Five Amazon pilots get the green light

Customers Have Spoken: Alpha House, Betas, Annebots, Creative Galaxy and Tumbleaf Chosen for Amazon's First-Ever Original Series, Available Exclusively on Prime Instant Video

Four senators-turned-unlikely-roommates, four young entrepreneurs attempting to make it big in techland, a kid scientist and her robots, an alien artist, and a whimsical fox searching for adventure-are all getting back into character. Comedy pilots Alpha House and Betas, along with kids pilots Annebots, Creative Galaxy and Tumbleaf, have been given the greenlight to begin production on a full series of episodes that will air exclusively on Prime Instant Video later this year and in early 2014. Amazon and LOVEFiLM customers gave feedback that Amazon Studios used to decide which comedy and kids pilots should be made into Amazon's first original series.

"We are thrilled at the enthusiastic customer response to our first original pilots," said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. "We built Amazon Studios so that customers could help decide which stories would make the very best movies and TV shows. It's exciting to see the process in motion, doing exactly what we set out to do. Comedy Series

Alpha House, which stars John Goodman and was written by Academy Award nominee and Pulitzer-Prize winner Garry Trudeau and produced by Elliot Webb and Jonathan Alter, is a comedy about four misfit senators turned unlikely roommates (Clark Johnson, Matt Malloy and Mark Consuelos) who rent a house together in Washington DC.

Set in the land of Silicon Valley start-ups, Betas, written by Evan Endicott and Josh Stoddard, follows four friends as they attempt to strike it rich with a new mobile social networking app. Ed Begley Jr., Jon Daly, Joe Dinicol, Charlie Saxton and Karan Soni star in the show. Michael Lehmann will direct and produce the show along with Emmy Award winners Alan Freedland and Alan Cohen, and Academy Award nominee Michael London.

Kids Series

Annebots revolves around Anne, a young scientist, who creates three robot helpers to assist her scientific experiments in the back of her dad's junkyard. This science-based series from creator J.J. Johnson aims to introduce kids to science and technology in a fun, new way.

Creative Galaxy is an animated interactive art adventure series, designed to inspire kids' creative thinking through crafts, story, music and dance. The series was created by Angela Santomero, creator of Blue's Clues and the Emmy-nominated literacy series, Super Why!

Tumbleaf was created by Drew Hodges and Kelli Bixler of Bix Pix Entertainment, the award-winning stop motion studio. The series, aimed at preschoolers, is set in a whimsical land where a small blue fox named Fig plays each day and discovers adventure, friendship and love around every bend. Children will be enriched by narratives that promote play through exploration and scientific thinking.

News that Amazon will add three large biospheres to its downtown Seattle headquarters had the tech world buzzing this week. The domed structures will feature a mix of workspaces and gardens, and they'll be flanked by a public park. Amazon's big announcement wasn't the week's only surprise, though. A multinational consortium announced plans to develop a Dubai-style artificial island with a space hotel and a zero-gravity spa off the coast of Barcelona. And new research finds that "pinkhouses" -- vertical farms that use only pink light -- are much more efficient than those that use the full light spectrum.

Some of this past week's clean tech news seemed like it was taken straight from your favorite science fiction series. NASA is providing financial backing for research into the development of a replicator that could 3D-print pizza in space. A startup based at NASA's Ames Research Center has created the world's first Star Trek-style tricorder, which can gather medical information about a person and then relay it to their smartphone within 10 seconds. Researchers developed a pair of color-changing gloves that alert its wearer to the presence of invisible toxins. Lego builders in New York used more than 5 million Lego bricks to build a life-size Star Wars X-wing starfighter that is 43 feet long. And in Denmark, the world's first Lego school is set to open in August.

The eyes of the design world turned to New York City last week for New York Design Week, and Inhabitat correspondents were on the scene to round up the best green designs from Day 1 and Day 2 of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, as well as the more interesting and challenging design show, Wanted Design. Green lighting stole the shows as designers unveiled all kinds of innovative and interesting LED lamps. We were particularly impressed by Moooi's brilliant Raimond and Heracleum II chandeliers, which dazzled crowds with a fireworks-style burst of LEDs. Designers also unveiled futuristic takes on classic designs -- check out the world's tiniest baroque chandelier by Mineheart and Group-Two's futuristic LED chandelier. Designer Tom Dixon showcased his dazzling geometric Cell Lights, which shine like hanging jewels, and Joe Doucet lit up the show with his Hadron Lamp, which contains 20 meters of electroluminescent wire. And one of our highlights from New York Design Week was Antonin Forneau's interactive water graffiti display, which enabled people to paint with LED light.

In clean energy news, an 18-year-old girl invented a device that can charge your cell phone in just 20 seconds. Norwegian scientists floated an idea to develop large underwater energy storage facilities on the sea floor to store energy produced by offshore wind farms. The world's largest hydropower plant is set to break ground in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2015. Students at Rice University have developed a pair of PediPower shoes that generate energy from footsteps, and a team of French students created energy-generating bikes made from trash to power a film festival.

In green transportation news, Tesla repaid its entire $465 million federal loan nine years early. "I hope we did you proud," said CEO Elon Musk. Hong Kong launched its first fleet of electric taxis -- 45 bright-red EVs that boast a 180-mile range. Moto Electra and rider Thad Wolff looked to set a new record by driving an electric motorcycle across the country in just three days. Speaking of records, Tûranor PlanetSolar, the world's largest solar-powered boat, just set a new transatlantic speed record when it made the journey in 22 days. For those tracking the Solar Impulse's trip across America, the solar-powered airplane departed on the second leg of its trip, landing in Dallas.

Eyes in the design world turned to New York City this week as New York Design Week officially launched. We hit the floors of International Contemporary Furniture Fair today to bring you the best new green designs from one of the largest contemporary design shows in the US -- including Blackbody's gorgeous OLED light trees and Tat Chao's ethereal LED lamps made from recycled wine glasses. We also checked out the locally focused BKLYN Designs show, where design duo Bower unveiled an awesome magnetic LED lamp, made from discarded pieces of scrap wood. Lighting designer Adam Frank unveiled three inspiring new designs at BKLYN Designs: the LED Lumen lamp, which casts tree-shaped shadows from a little candle holder; the incredible Reveal Projector, which projects an image of outdoor foliage and sky through a window on a blank wall (good for those in tiny NYC apartments); and the 3D hologram-ish LUCID Mirror, which displays a 3D image of illuminated clouds over your head!

Sky City One, a 220-story, entirely prefabricated skyscraper, is set to break ground next month in China. The entire building will be built in just seven months, and when it's finished it will supplant Dubai's Burj Khalifa as the world's tallest building. Speaking of Dubai, the latest bizarre attraction in the desert metropolis is the Chillout Cafe, a sub-zero cafe that's completely decked out with furniture and accessories that are made from carved ice. In other desert architecture news, Tangram Gulf unveiled plans for a Qatar World Cup Stadium that "sculpts the desert wind" to provide passive cooling. Beijing-based Decode Urbanism Office designed a conceptual skyscraper that's covered with thousands of small wind turbines and LED lights. And MOKO Architects unveiled plans to develop a crazy skydiving center in Warsaw that would be made from silos and shipping containers.

Wind energy company SheerWind caught the attention of the clean energy world when it unveiled an amazing new funnel-shaped turbine that can produce up to 600 percent more power than traditional wind turbines. In Japan, offshore technology company Mitsui is planning to install the world's first hybrid wind / current power-generating system, which combines a floating vertical-axis wind turbine with an underwater turbine that generates power from ocean currents. Scientists at SUNY Buffalo are developing a new generation of liquid solar cells that could one day be as cheap as paint. And this week, Hyundai announced plans to install South Korea's largest solar power plant.

In green transportation news, the Global Vehicle Trust developed a prototype for the world's first flat-pack truck, which can be assembled in just 12 hours. Amtrak announced that it would replace 70 older trains in the Northeast Corridor with new high-efficiency electric trains. A team from the US Naval Research Laboratory broke its own record by flying a hydrogen fuel cell-powered unmanned airplane for 48 hours and one minute. And in another bit of record-breaking news, a group of Lego superfans in Denmark pieced together the world's longest Lego train track, which stretches more than 2.5 miles. In other Lego news, a newly launched company called Pleygo allows kids to rent and trade Lego sets. They're aiming to be the "Netflix of Legos!"

In science and design news this week, a 16-year-old high school student has been using fruit flies to investigate the benefits of organic over conventional produce. Scientist Mark Post has developed a lab-grown hamburger made up of 20,000 strips of cultured muscle, and he plans to serve it up for $325,000 in London next month. In gadgets-for-good news, a team of midwives developed an incredible "Solar Suitcase" which is pretty-much what it sounds like: a photovoltaic, fold-up suitcase lamp that allows midwives to see what they are doing at night or in dark houses, saving the lives of mothers and babies during childbirth in developing countries where access to electricity and hospitals is limited. Researchers in Potsdam-Golm have figured out a way to use an inkjet printer to create electrically conductive paper. Engineer Amanda Ghassaei developed a technique for creating beautiful and functional records out of wood using a laser cutter, and a technology firm in Japan has developed an interactive clothes hanger that helps shoppers make purchasing decisions.
