Bike sharing systems like New York's Citi Bike may be taking off, but it's doubtful that many participants can find every station without checking a map. Thankfully, Adafruit has unveiled a smart helmet project that could help at least a few of those riders get to their destinations while keeping their eyes on the road. The DIY effort feeds locations to an Arduino-based Flora board and its positioning add-ons, which in turn use a string of NeoPixel LEDs on the helmet as turn indicators. Commuters just have to watch for blinking lights to know where to go next. While the system isn't easy to set up when cyclists have to manually enter coordinates, it is flexible: the open-source code lets it adapt to most any bike sharing system or headpiece. As long as you can get over looking like a Christmas tree on wheels while you navigate, you can build a smart helmet of your own using the instructions at the source link.

Five Amazon pilots get the green light
Customers Have Spoken: Alpha House, Betas, Annebots, Creative Galaxy and Tumbleaf Chosen for Amazon's First-Ever Original Series, Available Exclusively on Prime Instant Video
Four senators-turned-unlikely-roommates, four young entrepreneurs attempting to make it big in techland, a kid scientist and her robots, an alien artist, and a whimsical fox searching for adventure-are all getting back into character. Comedy pilots Alpha House and Betas, along with kids pilots Annebots, Creative Galaxy and Tumbleaf, have been given the greenlight to begin production on a full series of episodes that will air exclusively on Prime Instant Video later this year and in early 2014. Amazon and LOVEFiLM customers gave feedback that Amazon Studios used to decide which comedy and kids pilots should be made into Amazon's first original series.
"We are thrilled at the enthusiastic customer response to our first original pilots," said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. "We built Amazon Studios so that customers could help decide which stories would make the very best movies and TV shows. It's exciting to see the process in motion, doing exactly what we set out to do. The success of this first set of pilots has given us the push to try this approach with even more shows-this is just the beginning."

Comedy Series
Alpha House, which stars John Goodman and was written by Academy Award nominee and Pulitzer-Prize winner Garry Trudeau and produced by Elliot Webb and Jonathan Alter, is a comedy about four misfit senators turned unlikely roommates (Clark Johnson, Matt Malloy and Mark Consuelos) who rent a house together in Washington DC.
Set in the land of Silicon Valley start-ups, Betas, written by Evan Endicott and Josh Stoddard, follows four friends as they attempt to strike it rich with a new mobile social networking app. Ed Begley Jr., Jon Daly, Joe Dinicol, Charlie Saxton and Karan Soni star in the show. Michael Lehmann will direct and produce the show along with Emmy Award winners Alan Freedland and Alan Cohen, and Academy Award nominee Michael London.
Kids Series
Annebots revolves around Anne, a young scientist, who creates three robot helpers to assist her scientific experiments in the back of her dad's junkyard. This science-based series from creator J.J. Johnson aims to introduce kids to science and technology in a fun, new way.
Creative Galaxy is an animated interactive art adventure series, designed to inspire kids' creative thinking through crafts, story, music and dance. The series was created by Angela Santomero, creator of Blue's Clues and the Emmy-nominated literacy series, Super Why!
Tumbleaf was created by Drew Hodges and Kelli Bixler of Bix Pix Entertainment, the award-winning stop motion studio. The series, aimed at preschoolers, is set in a whimsical land where a small blue fox named Fig plays each day and discovers adventure, friendship and love around every bend. Children will be enriched by narratives that promote play through exploration and scientific thinking.

Hyundai Ad Makes Light of Suicide, Ignites Internet Firestorm

What happens when you create a car advertisement depicting suicide? Hyundai tried that stunt in the UK last week, and by Thursday the Hyundai ad had certainly garnered plenty of attention, but not at all the kind of reaction the Korean car company had hoped for.

Blistering criticism is erupting from across the globe toward the Hyundai spot. The 60-second commercial, entitled "Pipe Job," depicts a man attempting to commit suicide by starting his Hyundai iX35 car inside an enclosed garage.
The intent of the ad was to tout the car's low emissions, as one of its main byproducts is harmless water. Many said via Twitter that the move was insult to everyone who has ever had to cope with loved ones committing or attempting suicide.
Particularly heartbreaking is this open letter to Hyundai and the ad agency that created it, Innocean. The letter was written by London advertising copywriter Holly Brockwell, which she posted on her blog, Copybot:
When your ad started to play, and I saw the beautifully-shot scenes of taped-up car windows with exhaust feeding in, I began to shake. I shook so hard that I had to put down my drink before I spilt it. And then I started to cry. I remembered looking out of the window to see the police and ambulance, wondering what was happening. I remember mum sitting me down to explain that daddy had gone to sleep and would not be waking up, and no, he wouldn't be able to take me to my friend’s birthday party next week. No, he couldn’t come back from heaven just for that day, but he would like to if he could. I remember finding out that he had died holding my sister’s soft toy rabbit in his lap.

We've contacted Hyundai for comment, and while we wait for a response, here's the apology the company submitted on Thursday, in an attempt to quell the worldwide firestorm of criticism:
We understand that some people may have found the iX35 video offensive. We are very sorry if we have offended anyone. We have taken the video down and have no intention of using it in any of our advertising or marketing.
The misstep is a surprise for sophisticated advertiser Hyundai, which Mashable reported was one of the companies most committed to advertising on the Super Bowl. The company has bought ads on every Super Bowl for the past six years. However, we also noted that Hyundai's track record with its ads has been mixed.
Update: Hyundai America issued the following response to the UK Hyundai IX35 ad:
We at Hyundai Motor America are shocked and saddened by the depiction of a suicide attempt in an inappropriate UK video featuring a Hyundai. Suicide merits thoughtful discussion, not this type of treatment.
Update 2: The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention sent us this statement:
"We know from research that graphic depictions of suicide in the media can inadvertently lead to further suicides, a phenomenon known as contagion," said Robert Gebbia, executive director for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. "This advertisement was particularly graphic and potentially dangerous. We are pleased that Hyundai has decided to pull this campaign. That said, we hope that advertisers and companies realize that suicide is a worldwide health problem that claims more than 1 million lives each year, taking an enormous toll on family, friends, co-workers and entire communities and it should not be used to sell products."
This is not the first time a car company has tried to make light of suicide to sell its products. French car manufacturer Citroën had a similar ad a few years ago.

Bud Light Surprises NBA Player with 1,100 Cases of Beer

During the Miami Heat's incredible 27-game winning streak earlier this season, forward Shane Battier told NBA.com that he's a superstitious fellow. As the Heat won game after game, Battier said he was sticking to one beer to keep the streak's mojo intact. That beer? Bud Light.
Now, nearly a month later, Bud Light has paid Battier back for the love. How? A surprise delivery of some 1,100 cases of the goes-down-easy brew. The special drop-off is documented in the YouTube video, above, which we recommend checking out. Whether you're a fan of mass-produced light beer or are a craft-brew snob, there's one thing we can all agree on: Having 1,100 cases of beer laying around is never a bad thing.

When it feels like all the photos in your social feeds have been altered by a filter or perfected with editing software, a moment illuminated by completely natural light can be a welcome change of scene.
We asked for your best photos taken using only natural light as part of the Mashable Photo Challenge. We received just under 900 submissions, a new record for the Photo Challenge, making it difficult to narrow it down to these 21. Our guest curator, Santiago PerezGrovas, chose a few of his favorites based on composition and creativity.
