Google posts Glass FAQ to answer privacy and technology questions

Google has nearly finished rolling out Glass to Explorer Program members, but many of us still have questions while the technology remains rare. The company is satisfying some of that curiosity today: it just posted a FAQ that explains Glass beyond the hardware. While there are no revelations in store, the page goes out of its way to address some of the controversies surrounding Glass, including app policies, privacy concerns and the risk of technology addiction. It's doubtful that the FAQ will please everyone, but those who just have to get some official answers on Glass can find them at the source link.

WordPress CEO sees 72,000 blogs imported from Tumblr after Yahoo rumor breaks

WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg has spoken out in an attempt to capitalize on Yahoo's rumored $1.1 billion acquisition of rival blogging service Tumblr. He claims that once the news broke on Sunday, blog post transfers from Tumblr to his own site rose from 400 to 600 per hour to over 72,000 -- which presumably included users put off by Yahoo's track record of shutting down its acquisitions (like Del.icio.us, Geocities and Broadcast.com). If that figure is true, then Marissa Mayer's probably going to have to answer some rather awkward questions in a few hours.

How to Really Delete Reddit Posts

Even when you're using a fake name on a social media site, your comments can come back to haunt you. Just ask notorious Redditor violentacrez, who was unmasked last fall by Adrian Chen, a reporter for Gawker.

Is it possible to protect your privacy online? Some say no.

"Trying to take something off the Internet is like trying to remove pee from a swimming pool," wrote Redditor steste.

Unlike Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and others, Reddit asks for no personal information to create an account. However, it still records and retains the IP address from which the account was made, which can be enough for law enforcement to help establish a user's identity. And in the case of violentacrez, an ambitious reporter could find his identity through his comments and associations with other Redditors.

Violentacrez, aka Michael Brutsch, became a target for his very offensive posts. Your posts may be just a bit embarrassing — in hindsight.

You can delete a regrettable comment or your entire account on any social media network, but your data can remain on a site's servers indefinitely. Whereas other companies, such as Google, have declined to say how long they keep users' content and associated IP addresses, Reddit is explicit in its new terms of service.

"This means that, by default, the [IP addresses] are not deleted from our servers — ever — and will still be accessible after your account is deleted," states the new privacy policy, which takes effect on May 15. Reddit also keeps copies of the entire site on its servers, which are refreshed every 90 days.

However, Reddit is working on an option that would allow users to completely remove all of their posts when they delete their accounts. In the meantime, here's a workaround for removing old posts for good.

Deleting posts removes them from public view but not from Reddit's servers. Instead, Redditors  should overwrite them.

So, the trick is to go back into your Reddit account and replace old comments that you want to erase with something innocuous, such as "I like turtles."

Apple Posts First Profit Decline in a Decade

Apple beat Wall Street's estimates for revenue and sales of the iPhone and iPad in the March quarter, but the company's profits declined year-over-year for the first time in a decade.

Apple sold 37.4 million iPhones and 19.5 million iPads, surpassing analysts' estimates by about 1 million on both fronts. Those device sales helped Apple bring in $43.6 billion in revenue for the quarter, beating the consensus estimate of $42.6 billion and setting a new record for March quarter revenues.

"We are pleased to report record March quarter revenue thanks to continued strong performance of iPhone and iPad," said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in a statement. "Our teams are hard at work on some amazing new hardware, software, and services and we are very excited about the products in our pipeline."

It wasn't all good news, however. The company's profit per share was $10.09 for the quarter, down from $12.30 in the same quarter a year ago. That marks the first time Apple's profits have declined since 2003. Apple's gross margin for the quarter was 37.5%, down from 47.4% in the year-ago quarter, presumably due to the fact that some products like the iPad Mini are being sold closer to cost.

Shortly after Apple released its earnings report, Apple appeased investors by announcing plans to more than double the amount of money it allots for buybacks and dividends. The company now plans to give back $100 billion to shareholders by the end of 2015. As of the end of the March quarter, Apple's cash pile had ballooned to $145 billion.

Apple's stock collapsed below $400 last week for the first time since 2011 following weak sales results from some of Apple's supply and manufacturing partners. The stock is currently down more than 40% from the intraday trading high of $705 a share that it hit when the iPhone 5 was released.

The stock was halted for the first 20 minutes after the earnings report was released, but is currently up more than 5% in after-hours trading.
