BlackBerry 10 not coming to BlackBerry PlayBook tablets

If you were hoping your BlackBerry PlayBook would get a taste of BlackBerry 10, think twice. Despite earlier plans, Thorsten Heins just revealed that the newer OS isn't coming to his company's tablet due to "performance and user experience" concerns. The executive didn't discuss the long-term future of the PlayBook, but it's clear that the current model is at the end of the road. When the company's earnings are back in the red, devoting attention to a long-struggling device isn't likely to be high on the priority list.

Computex 2013 wrapup Windows 8, tablets, Haswell, highres displays, earthquakes and more!

This year's Computex certainly didn't come and go quietly. From a 6.5-magnitude earthquake shortly after landing in Taipei to tons of tablets, smartphones, Haswell systems and more peripherals than you can shake a Taiwan dollar at, this has been one whirlwind week of hot and humid adventure. Unlike other shows abroad, this country's massive computer exhibition is only growing in importance, as more manufacturers from both East and West choose to announce products and services here in the Republic of China.

The week was filled with unveilings both revolutionary and evolutionary -- from quirky to crucial, there was a lot to take in. Microsoft said to cut prices for OEMs who push Windows RT on small tablets

Acer has already managed to cram full Windows 8 into a $380 8-incher (shown above), but ARM-based Windows RT tablets have the potential to drive prices down even further -- if only someone, somewhere would see their merit. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft is now trying to help things along by offering discounts to OEMs who'll use RT in smaller tablets. The prices in question are confidential, so it's hard to gauge the likely impact for consumers, but with Dell's XPS 10 (shown above) still costing $400 with its dock, and with Surface RT fetching $500, there's definitely scope for improvement.

MediaTek Introduces New Quad-Core Application Processor for Fast-Growing Tablet Market

The new Application Processor completes MediaTek's multi-core processor product portfolio, delivering a significant difference in computing and multimedia performance

HSINCHU, Taiwan, May 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- MediaTek Inc., a leading fabless semiconductor company for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions, today announced the availability of the new quad-core application processor -- MT8125 designed for the fast growing global tablet markets. The new tablet platform is an extension of the company's highly successful quad-core portfolio. It integrates a power-efficient quad-core Cortex™- A7 CPU subsystem with speed up to 1.5GHz, PowerVR™ Series5XT Graphics that delivers compelling multimedia features and sophisticated user experiences. Report: Tablets to Outship Desktops This Year

Tablet PCs will outship desktop PCs for the first time this year, catapulting us into a true "post-PC era," according to a report by researcher IDC.

Shipments of tablet PCs will surpass desktops as the former category grows by 48.7% and the latter shrinks by 4.3%, IDC estimates. In 2014, tablets will also outship portable PCs. "In emerging markets, consumer spending typically starts with mobile phones and, in many cases, moves to tablets before PCs," said Megha Saini, research analyst for IDC's Worldwide Smart Connected Device Tracker, in a statement. "The pressure on the PC market is significantly increasing and we can see longer replacement cycles coming into effect very soon and that, too, will put downward pressure on PC sales."

Meanwhile, "smart connected devices," a category that includes smarthphones, tablets and PCs, grew 29.1% vs. 2012 to more than 1 billion devices. The value of those shipments, according to IDC was $576.9 billion. The researcher predicts that by 2017 the segment will hit 2.2 billion units with revenues of $814.3 billion.

Looking at the fourth quarter, IDC also found that Apple had 20.3% of the smart connected devices market vs. 21.2% for Samsung. Apple had 30.7% of revenues for the segment compared to 20.4% for Samsung, according to IDC.
