GEAK Eye and Mars smartphones

GEAK may be focusing its attention on wearable tech like the Ring and Watch, but it still has a pair of new offerings for those who like old-fashioned smartphones: meet the 5-inch Eye and 5.8-inch Mars. Both are tailored to photo junkies with 13MP, backside-illuminated rear cameras as well as strong front cameras that shoot at 8MP (Eye) and 2MP (Mars). Differences between the handsets revolve mostly around performance and screen size. The Eye keeps things modest with a 720p IPS display, a quad-core MediaTek MT6589, HSPA+ data, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Spring for the extra-large Mars and you'll upgrade to a 1080p IPS LCD, a Snapdragon 600 and 2GB of RAM. Either way, you won't be paying a lot for the imaging prowess -- when pre-orders start on June 25th, GEAK will ask ¥1,999 ($326) off-contract for the Eye and ¥2,999 ($490) for the Mars. Just don't expect either to leave China when there's no word of international plans.

JVC unveils 4K camcorder with Nikon Fmount

Lovers of 4K and Nikon glass, rejoice: JVC has just launched a 4K large-sensor camcorder that will use Nikon F-mount lenses. The JY-HMQ30 camera will operate in manual focus mode only -- even with AF glass -- though f-stop settings will be controllable in-camera for modern lenses with no aperture ring. As with the company's fixed lens GY-HMQ10, the interchangeable model will record AVC/H.264 4K video at up to 60 fps onto four separate SDHC cards, each capturing an HD-sized quadrant with a total maximum data rate of 144Mbps -- and also capture 1080/60p video at 28Mbps onto a single card. Other features include a JVC 4K clip manager that'll convert files to Apple's ProRes422 codec, live 4K, 60 fps output to a monitor or portable recorder, 4K time-lapse recording, a focus assist function and stereo XLR microphone inputs. Though the company's taking orders for the 1.7 million yen ($18,000) camera starting today in Japan, there's no word yet on availability or pricing stateside -- but you can probably start polishing up those Nikon lenses soon.

Taiwanese flash memory specialist PQI had quite a big presence at Computex, and luckily for us, it also brought along several new products to show off. The biggest bunch from the lot were the company's new Connect 200 and Connect 300 series micro-USB OTG dongles, most of which offer memory expansion that will come in handy for microSD-less devices. Do bear with us while we go through all six of these products.

PQI unveils upcoming microUSB drives and USB OTG accessories

when.eng("eng.galleries.init")

Let's start off with the Connect 201. This tiny zinc alloy flash drive comes with both a standard USB plug on one end, plus a micro-USB plug with a cap on the other end. In other words, the 16GB or 32GB space inside can be accessed directly from either a computer or any USB OTG mobile device, without requiring a plug adapter.

While this may not be the first-ever micro-USB flash drive, PQI's solution -- including the other storage devices in this article -- comes with the added benefit by way of a free Android app called Connect+, which is already available on Google Play. This file management software loads automatically when a PQI dongle is plugged in, thus saving you the hassle of combing through the mobile device's directory in many other similar apps. On top of that, Connect+ can also single out images (with thumbnail display), music and videos for easier search.

Expect the Connect 201 to show up in stores in July, though no prices have been set just yet.

Next one down along PQI's roadmap is the Connect 202. It's essentially the Connect 201 but can also simultaneously act as a data cable between a computer and a mobile device. The storage part -- which can theoretically go up to 64GB -- is stored in the bigger USB plug, but it can be accessed from either plug individually. When both sides are connected, only the computer side will have access to the dongle's memory along with the mobile device's storage. It's a pretty neat two-in-one package, meaning you don't have to carry a micro-USB cable and a separate micro-USB flash drive.

The final version of this device will come with a protection case as shown above, but unlike this prototype, it will eventually have a flat cable for aesthetic and durability reasons. Keep an eye out for this in Q3.

PQI Connect 203 See all photos 6 Photos

when.eng("eng.galleries.init")

Now, imagine the Connect 201 but with microSD expansion instead of built-in storage. This is exactly what the Connect 203 is, except it comes with a sliding case that only exposes one plug at a time, as opposed to the Connect 201's removable cap on just the micro-USB end. We were actually amazed that PQI managed to carve out some space inside the bigger USB plug for the microSD slot, and since the card sits flush in the plug when inserted, you'll need to use the small ejection switch on the other side of the body to push the card out. Again, this will hit the market in Q3 for an unknown price.

PQI unveils upcoming microUSB OTG drives and accessoriesFinally, we have the Connect 204 to wrap up PQI's USB 2.0 line of OTG accessories (for now, anyway). This is simply a micro-USB to standard USB OTG adapter, and the beauty here is that it doesn't have a short cable that other typical OTG adapters have. This means your flash drive won't wobble around while you're using it on a mobile device via this solid dongle. This is also expecting a Q3 launch.

PQI Connect 301 See all photos 3 Photos

when.eng("eng.galleries.init")

Moving on to the more advanced range, we have the Connect 301 that's essentially the 201 but with USB 3.0 connectivity instead of 2.0, plus it comes with a red rotating shaft -- a feature that's apparently more popular in certain countries -- instead of a plastic cap. Due to the faster transfer speed and larger body size, we've been told that this dongle can theoretically come in a 128GB flavor, but it's more likely to launch with just 32GB and 64GB versions in Q4 this year.

when.eng("eng.galleries.init")

Last but not least, we have the Connect 302. It's literally just the 301 with two metallic screw-on caps for protection against liquids, especially on the micro-USB end. While it's a nice idea, we voiced our concern over how easy we could lose the caps, but a company rep said his team can look into the possibility of adding either an extra cable loop, or even adding magnets to keep the caps in one place. Again, watch out for this dongle in Q4.

Atheer Labs unveils 3D augmented reality mobile platform and a natural human UI

With the advent of Google Glass and the continued development of platforms like the Epson Moverio and Vuzix Smart Glasses, head-mounted wearables are getting a lot of attention these days. Atheer Labs is a small company looking to catch that wave of interest with a new set of intelligent spectacles and a novel way for folks to interact with them. What you see above is company founder Sleiman Itani wearing Atheer's prototype device that delivers 3D augmented reality and implements what the company calls a "natural human interface."

The hardware is still very much in the prototype stage, and the unit we saw was clearly a hand-built affair. It packs a pair of displays, a rechargeable battery, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, plus an accelerometer, gyro and an IR camera into it's relatively bulky frame -- so it's not not exactly a form factor ready for retail shelves. However, because of that bulk, it can function as a standalone device (it runs an an open source OS that runs Android apps), though it also has the ability to offload some processing to a smartphone.Atheer Labs prototype 3D smart glasses See all photos 11 Photos

when.eng("eng.galleries.init")

The UI is sort of a cross between Kinect and Leap Motion, and is unique in that it's a natural, direct form of interacting with software elements displayed in three dimensions. In practice, this means that to interact with a displayed object, a user actually reaches out and 'touches' that object in space instead of manipulating it via gestures. Itani explains the approach thusly: "it's like the difference between using a mouse and a touchscreen on a regular computer... it's an intuitive solution." The interface can also utilize voice control -- the platform can hook into any voice recognition API from Nuance or elsewhere -- but no such capabilities were enabled on the device we saw.

Atheer Labs unveils 3D augmented reality mobile platform and a natural human UI

We got to use the natural human interface ourselves in a rudimentary demo, and this editor found himself agreeing with Itani's assessment. It does feel more natural to poke and prod objects in a three dimensional workspace than manipulating them remotely with gestures (though the UI not totally devoid of them -- holding up a hand in a 'stop' gesture closes programs, for example). That said, we didn't get to use an actual OS or do any real computing on the platform. So, it remains to be seen how the UI will translate to uses other than spinning a three dimensional cube or popping bubbles with a fingertip in a simple game. Atheer will be offering APIs, however, so we look forward to seeing what devs can come up with when the time comes.

While we were impressed with the system's ease of use, interacting with objects rendered close to the eyes was a bit disorienting at times. However, Itani and company CTO Allen Y. Yang assured us that Atheer has some IP on technology that personalizes the displays to each individual users's visual needs -- and the company's VP is an opthamologist who is helping them refine the system. Needless to say, we didn't get to tailor a set of specs for our eyeballs, so we can't comment on how well that IP does its job.

The real question is, of course, when (and if) Atheer's platform will be available for purchase. For now, the plan is to have a retail device ready for sale next year -- which gives the company plenty of time to refine their software and line up the partners and developers needed to help make the platform a success.

Show full PR textAtheer Pioneers the Mobile 3D Platform of the Future to Seamlessly Fuse an Interactive Digital Layer into the Real World

Uses Stereoscopic 3D, Seamless Human Interactions, and Augmented Reality, to Create the First-Ever Natural Human Interface

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – (May 30, 2013) – Atheer, the company that is integrating the digital world into the real world, today unveiled its groundbreaking mobile 3D platform and natural human interface technology to spring forward into the future where users compute on the go with the swipe of a hand or the flick of a finger, and never have to touch a physical screen.

The company and platform were launched on stage at The Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital conference in front of an audience of international business and technology leaders. Atheer was one of only a handful of companies selected to demo innovative technology on stage.

Atheer's technology is unlike anything that currently exists in the industry, taking the mobile interface from 2D to an interactive 3D platform centered on human actions. The platform is breaking the display size barrier and has created an experience that is more immersive than a tablet, and more portable than a smartphone. Atheer's technology enables a wearable, portable 3D platform for the first time.

"Our mobile 3D platform fundamentally alters the way people access information on the go, adding a natural interface that can be controlled with natural gestures and motions," said Soulaiman Itani, Founder and CEO of Atheer. "The possibilities and advantages of adding an interactive digital layer to the existing physical world are endless, and this is the future of not only technology, but the human experience."

Atheer's 3D interface is completely immersive and overlays information into users' visual fields in a way that intuitively and effortlessly fits within their frame of reference. This allows users to seamlessly interact with the information by using natural gestures that do not interfere with their regular activity. The mobile 3D platform has effects on daily activities ranging from navigation and gaming, to interactive education and health.

Atheer is grounded in the most advanced technology, using complex algorithms, software and hardware to provide the best form factor and user experience, and is the brainchild of dozens of patented and patent-pending inventions. These include time and power optimal AtheerCoreTM algorithms for detecting hands and gestures, and patented ergonomic benefits that can improve visual comfort and performance by adjusting to each person's specific characteristics. Atheer has patented Retinal Mapping™ and Vision Optimization™ to dynamically improve users' visual experience on the platform, and Personalized-Ergonomics™ to enable a truly natural experience for users' eyes, hands and posture as the platform learns the ideal operating conditions for each particular user.

"What we're doing is so complex and novel that we had to pull together an interdisciplinary team of specialists at the top of their fields to integrate their expertise. The result has been innovative, patented technology that allows our platform to solve a large number of interconnected problems from low-power detection, natural gesture interfaces and sensor fusion, to user ergonomics and UX," continued Soulaiman. "Because our talented team has integrated their diverse skills to test the technology in a natural mobile paradigm, we've been able to create the first fully portable platform."

The platform allows users to leverage regular 2D Android applications, and has the capability to be integrated with any operating system. It also allows for the development of 3D applications specifically for the platform. Atheer gives developers an opportunity to develop 3D augmented reality applications for the first time, allowing them to build more immersive apps and user experiences. The Atheer technology and 3D applications built for the platform are fundamentally disrupting the existing mobile market, and will usher in a 3D mobile device market.

Atheer is currently in the product development phase. The company will be working closely with developers to build 3D applications for the platform, and will be conducting developer demonstrations throughout Summer 2013. Dijit unveils NextGuide Web with Facebook-sourced TV recommendations

Dijit Media Introduces NextGuide Web, a Next Generation Social TV Discovery and Sharing Web Experience

San Francisco, CA – May 17, 2013 – Dijit Media, Inc., makers of the popular NextGuide, Miso, and Dijit Remote social TV discovery and control applications, today introduced NextGuide Web. NextGuide Web is a new site that helps people find and explore TV shows and movies and see what their friends recommend and watch. The site lets users discover and watch shows on live TV and popular streaming services including Amazon Prime, Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, Hulu Plus, and Netflix.

Key features of NextGuide Web include:
Single Search - No more need to browse site after site to find your favorite show on a streaming service - search once on NextGuide for combined live and streaming results.

Universal Watchlist and Queue - No need to maintain unique queues on all your favorite sites, just create one list at NextGuide for anything you'd ever like to see.

Automatic Reminders - For any show or movie, set a reminder and NextGuide can email you whenever there's a new airing on live TV or any streaming service.

One Click to Watch & Record to DVR - When browsing shows, NextGuide includes direct links to watch on streaming services, or queue recordings to your home DVR (note: DVR features only for Comcast and DIRECTV subscribers at present).

Social Recommendations - Easily discover what shows and movies your Facebook friends are Liking, and get recommendations from other people who watch similar shows and movies as you do.

"Last year we launched the NextGuide iPad app and revolutionized the TV guide. Now we're extending that great platform to the Web," said Jeremy Toeman, CEO of Dijit Media. "NextGuide.TV is the easiest way for people to keep track of great shows they want to watch, easily get reminders for new airings on live or streaming services, and share their recommendations and social TV profile with their friends."

NextGuide Web is launching a closed beta for the public and all users will have invitations to share with friends. The company will extend new invitations on a first-come, first-serve basis at the beginning of each week. All existing Dijit Remote and NextGuide app users can use their account credentials (or Facebook Connect) to log in to NextGuide Web immediately, and Miso users will have access within the month. NextGuide Web is accessible internationally, but supports TV and movie catalogs for North American users at present.

"Audiences have plenty of choice when it comes to search and discovery of TV shows and movies," said Colin Dixon, Chief Analyst with nScreenMedia. "What is much rarer is a simple, intuitive guide that brings together TV broadcasting with online streaming, as in the new NextGuide."

Dijit Media also offers three discovery and social TV apps for iOS and Android: NextGuide for iPad, the Dijit Remote, and Miso. Dijit Media's flagship app is NextGuide, a "hyper-personalized" TV guide that brings together live TV with results from popular streaming services. NextGuide providers recommendations and discovery technology with social features and a unique mosaic-style interface for a modernized re-interpretation of the classic guide. The Dijit Remote is the top-rated iOS remote control app, which also powers the experience for the Griffin Beacon iOS accessory (also available for Android). The Miso app was the first-ever "Social TV" service that lets users share what they are watching with their friends, post to social networks, and connect with fans around the shows they love. For "checking in", users can collect points and unlock virtual badges.

Logitech releases $60 iPad keyboard wired for Lightning or 30pin connectors

Bluetooth keyboards for the iPad are nice and all, but aren't you going to need to be within a wire's-length to see the thing anyway? To that end, Logitech has announced a full-sized wired iPad keyboard targeted to classrooms with an emphasis on durability and maintenance. It has a spill-resistant design, three-year warranty and key life of over 5 million strokes, according to the company, and comes in either lightning or 30-pin versions. If you don't mind being tethered, the Lightning model will ship in August and the last-gen iPad model in November for $60 each -- but you can pre-order now at the source.
