YouTube autoslomo

YouTube introduces builtin slowmo feature

How do you add a dramatic flair to your mundane video clips? You play it in slow motion, that's how. And now that YouTube has introduced a built-in slow-mo feature, you don't even need to capture footage using a high-speed camera. Just click Edit, navigate to Enhancements and hit the icon emblazoned with a turtle to make footage crawl at 12.5, 25 or 50 percent of its original pace. Note that resulting clips can last no longer than 10 minutes, and the feature might not be available in some countries outside the US just yet. Head past the break to compare two samples and see how the new feature can transform your YouTube vids, Dave Chappelle-style.

We've gotta give it to Microsoft... building a YouTube app for Windows Phone 8 that strips out advertising and allows users to download streaming videos was one hell of a way to get Google's attention about the lack of an official app for the platform -- even if it managed to attract ire at the same time. Now, multiple reports are coming in that both companies have reached an agreement of sorts, which will result in an app that's fully compliant with YouTube's Terms of Service in the coming weeks. You might've already guessed it, but unlike Microsoft's most recent conciliatory update to its YouTube app, the next version will serve up ads. You'll find a joint statement from both companies after the break. Now that the pair are learning to cooperate, might we suggest they take a look at Gmail?

Joint statement from Google and Microsoft

Microsoft and YouTube are working together to update the new YouTube for Windows Phone app to enable compliance with YouTube's API terms of service, including enabling ads, in the coming weeks. Microsoft will replace the existing YouTube app in Windows Phone Store with the previous version during this time.

YouTube Introduces Paid Channels

YtSeth-fiegerman By Seth Fiegerman2013-05-09 19:24:03 UTC

After months of rumors, YouTube finally introduced a pilot program for paid channels on Thursday.

YouTube will now let a few dozen of popular channels charge viewers a subscription fee of 99 cents or more per month, the company announced in a blog post. Each of these channels will offer two weeks of free viewing before charges kick in and some will provide discounts for those who sign up for an annual subscription.

Some of the YouTube channels that are part of the pilot program include Big Think Mentor, Comedy.TV, PGA Digital Golf and Pets.TV.

"This is just the beginning," YouTube said in the blog post. "We’ll be rolling paid channels out more broadly in the coming weeks as a self-service feature for qualifying partners."

The move comes with relatively little risk for YouTube and the possibility of generating significant revenue by taking a cut of subscription fees and advertisements that air on the channels.

Would you pay to watch videos from your favorite YouTube channels? Share in the comments.

YouTube Launching Paid Subscriptions to Some Video Channels: Report

Youtube-logoAnita-li-53bfb9a9b2 By Anita Li2013-05-06 02:25:19 UTC

YouTube is set to launch a paid subscription model for its specialist video channels as early as this week, according to a report.

The move, which has been in development for months, aims to help channels finance a wider range of content such as television shows and films, and will serve as another source of revenue, according to the Financial Times.

The service will include up to 50 YouTube channels, and subscriptions to each channel will start as low a $1.99 per month, the newspaper reported Sunday, citing anonymous sources.

In response to the report, a YouTube spokesperson told Mashable, "We have nothing to announce at this time, but we're looking into creating a subscription platform that could bring even more great content to YouTube for our users to enjoy and provide our creators with another vehicle to generate revenue from their content, beyond the rental and ad-supported models we offer."

Rumors that YouTube will monetize its premium content have circulated for some time. In January, AdAge reported that the site asked a small group of channels to apply to be among those paid.

At the time, a YouTube representative told Mashable, "We have long maintained that different content requires different types of payment models ... The important thing is that, regardless of the model, our creators succeed on the platform. There are a lot of our content creators that think they would benefit from subscriptions, so we’re looking at that."

Other signs suggest that YouTube is likely working on à la carte and pay-per-view options for its video channels. Code found in a February app update mentioned subscribing and unsubscribing from paid YouTube channels.

YouTube Comes To Google Glass With Fullscreen BEAM

Google-glass-guyEmily-7d5b1d3e6b By Emily Price2013-05-04 01:14:25 UTC

Google Glass has its first YouTube app.

Fullscreen Labs released Fullscreen BEAM Friday, the first YouTube app for the high-tech glasses.

“Our engineering team loves building better experiences for digital video creators every day and hacking on new initiatives and passion projects into the night,” Drew Baumann, Founding Engineer at Fullscreen said in a blog post announcing the app.

“We host monthly hack days in the office to sharpen our creativity and coding chops….so it’s not surprising that when Google released Google Glass, their foray into wearable technology, our immediate thought was, 'How can we build a seamless experience for YouTubers to capture and share life’s moments?'"

With Fullscreen BEAM, Glass users can record a video using Glass and then use the app to upload it to their YouTube channel, either publicly or privately. Videos can also be shared on Twitter.

Check out this video for a look at how the app works:

You can get started using Fullscreen BEAM here.

Your YouTube Views Could Treat 100,000 Children With Malaria

Mary-and-marthaBrian Anthony Hernandez2013-04-25 18:36:19 UTC

Mary and Martha, starring Oscar-winner Hilary Swank and nominee Brenda Blethyn, tells the dramatic story of two mothers who bond over the malaria-induced deaths of their sons.

Leading up to the film's U.S. release this month on HBO, the network teamed up with nonprofit organization Malaria No More and pharmaceutical company Novartis to help treat children with malaria, a disease that reportedly kills more than 1,400 kids per day globally.

For every video view of the film's trailer — posted on HBO's YouTube channel — Malaria No More said it would provide a "full course of treatment" for a malaria-stricken child in Africa.

Malaria No More promised as many as 50,000 treatments would be sent if the video attracted just as many views. The campaign spread on social media and quickly hit that 50,000 mark.

"In the past week, we’ve heard countless stories of individuals who saw the film and have since been inspired to join the malaria fight," Martin Edlund, CEO of Malaria No More, told Mashable. "That’s exactly what we all wanted to happen –- for people to be moved to take action. And today, being World Malaria Day, we have an easy way for people to help."

Today, Malaria No More promised 50,000 additional treatments — dependent on views.

Mary and Martha on HBO in the U.S. on April 20, just days before World Malaria Day on April 25. The film had initially debuted on BBC in the United Kingdom in March.
