Finnish carrier DNA confirms it will be the first to launch Jolla phones running Sailfish

DNA to launch the Jolla smartphone as the first operator in the world

This year, DNA will launch the Jolla smart phone based on the Sailfish operating system in Finland. DNA will be the first operator to offer Jolla smartphones in Finland.

DNA will sell Jolla smartphones as the first operator in the world and as the only operator in Finland as soon as they enter the market. Jolla will be available in DNA Kauppa stores and DNA online, as well as at selected DNA retailers. Jolla unveiled its new smart phone in May.

DNA's cooperation with Jolla is a part of the DNA partnership strategy, aimed at providing Finnish people with the most appealing equipment and services on the market. DNA is the only operator to start the Jolla smart phone sales in Finland.

"As a Finnish operator, we consider it important to support this new Finnish success story, in which we see enormous potential. The partnership with Jolla reflects DNA's manner of doing business and is a fantastic example of the way in which we want to be involved in interesting innovations that bring real added value to their users. We boldly apply this start-up mentality to our own operations as well," says Pekka Väisänen, Vice President for DNA's Consumer Business.

DNA has also been involved in the Jolla smart phone's development from the very beginning. "In a spirit of 'co-creation' that is characteristic of Jolla, we have been able to influence the device's design and usability, allowing us to convey our customers' wishes directly to Jolla's development team, already at the design stage", says Väisänen.

"It is valuable to find a good operator as a partner in the domestic market. The cooperation between DNA and Jolla has been extremely rewarding, and we place particular value on the feedback regarding the wishes of customers, received from an operator that knows its clientele. Our two companies are equally enthusiastic about the launch of Jolla smart phones at DNA Stores nationwide during the last quarter," says Jolla CEO Tomi Pienimäki.

Following some important pricing details, preorder launches and some concrete hardware specs, we've just got to play with the new Jolla phone. Sure, we've already toyed with the software, but today's event is all about the new physical home for the Sailfish OS. It could be a difficult sell in the cutthroat world of smartphones, there's certainly something compelling in Jolla's split design and all those of color options, regardless of what functionality they might add in the future. Say hello to the Jolla Phone. Pre-orders for the world's first Sailfish OS device started today and we've called into Helsinki to get the whole story from Jolla's co-founder and software head Marc Dillon. While we know there's a 4.5-inch "high definition" screen (resolution TBC), dual-core processor and 8-megapixel camera, we were kept at arms length during our meeting with an early prototype. So, unfortunately, our full hands-on treatment will have to wait until later today. The most notable design point is how the device is split into two halves, with a back cover (available in several different colors) that can contain its own hardware components and communicate information from those components. The main half of the device, meanwhile, contains the display and processor.

This is where Jolla reckons its core innovation lies, with the opportunity to augment initial hardware in the future, as well as to allow personalization and other features at the software level. We quizzed Marc over what this might mean, and asked if things like wireless charging, high-capacity batteries, game controls and even a high-powered flash peripheral might be possible -- to which Dillon replied that all those ideas were possible, and that the only limit was "your imagination." It'll likely depend more on the reception of the device, although be assured that the OS we had demonstrated today looked just as fluid and intuitive as last time.

The Android app client remains on-board, while Jolla has made a concerted effort to appeal to the fragmented app market in China -- we're told the Jolla phone will be compatible with "multiple streams." The device is still pegged to arrive before the end of 2013, in time for Chinese New Year. We'll have our own opinions and a hands-on video (with a color option, we're promised) at the launch party in just a few hours.

The first Jolla phone 45inch display, Android app compliant, 399 euros

Jolla's heavily teased launch day in Finland has already spilled some major news: pricing and specs for the first Sailfish OS handset. The phone seems to be called "The Other Half" -- or at least that's the working title for now -- and judging from Jolla's Facebook page it consists of a colorful plastic case, available in various shades including orange or green, which hooks onto the main chassis containing a 4.5-inch display (of unknown resolution), dual-core processor, microSD expansion with 16GB onboard, a "4G" modem, user replaceable battery and an 8MP rear camera. The chassis recognizes which case is attached and adapts the visual theme of the OS to match, creating "your other half, exactly as you want it to be."

Perhaps more usefully, the Sailfish operating system will also be Android app compliant out of the box, and we're currently on the ground in Helsinki trying to discover exactly how developers and users will be able to put that feature to work (while also chasing down the rest of the specs). Meanwhile, there's an emphatic video message from Jolla co-founder Marc Dillon after the break, seeking the world's assistance in taking the heritage of MeeGo into a new era.

Update: We now hear that the phone will simply be called the "Jolla."

Update #2: Jolla has just clarified that 4G means LTE. The display resolution has been vaguely described as "HD," which to our minds suggests 720p. Furthermore, it sounds like the way the "other half" interfaces with the main body of the device allows for much deeper functionality beyond just personalization.
