When asked about a chances of a future HP smartphone, she said: "The answer is yes but I cannot give a timetable. It would be silly if we say no. When HP has a smartphone, it will give a differentiated experience." Yesterday a series of leaked PowerPoint slides in the Washington Post revealed a program codenamed PRISM that allowed government investigators access to data from a number of top internet companies. That leak has been followed up in the last 24 hours by a series of blanket denials as tech companies (and their CEOs, including Google's Larry Page and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg) claimed they do not give "backdoor access," only generally acknowledging that they do respond to legal requests for specific information. Meanwhile government officials including President Obama responded to the claims mostly by claiming whatever is going on -- including the bulk collection of call logs by the NSA -- is legal and has been "repeatedly authorized by Congress."
Tonight, a New York Times article may be able to explain the difference between the statements, citing information from people briefed on the program and lawyers that handle the requests. Their report is that the companies discussed ways to "efficiently and securely" share data about foreign users in response to requests made under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. In contrast to the initial reports of direct server access, this report claims when a government request is made under an individual FISA request, it's reviewed by company lawyers and then sent over, sometimes electronically using company servers. That can include an investigation into a specific person, logs of certain search terms, and in some cases "real-time transmission of data." One specific instance cited involved an NSA agent going on-site at a company's HQ, installing government software on its server and remaining there for several weeks to offload data to a laptop.

The rumors on the potential sale of Hulu started circulating again a couple of months back. Now, according to AllThingsD, Yahoo is joining other big-name companies (such as Time Warner Cable and DirecTV) in the race to try and acquire the streaming service. Per the always-insightful sources "familiar with the process," Marissa Mayer & Co. submitted a bid for Hulu just this morning, though there are no details on how much the company is willing to spend on the video site. Something tells us we'll know more soon enough, but we can say with confidence that Yahoo is starting its holiday shopping really early.

Say hello to the Jolla Phone. Pre-orders for the world's first Sailfish OS device started today and we've called into Helsinki to get the whole story from Jolla's co-founder and software head Marc Dillon. While we know there's a 4.5-inch "high definition" screen (resolution TBC), dual-core processor and 8-megapixel camera, we were kept at arms length during our meeting with an early prototype. So, unfortunately, our full hands-on treatment will have to wait until later today. The most notable design point is how the device is split into two halves, with a back cover (available in several different colors) that can contain its own hardware components and communicate information from those components. The main half of the device, meanwhile, contains the display and processor.
This is where Jolla reckons its core innovation lies, with the opportunity to augment initial hardware in the future, as well as to allow personalization and other features at the software level. We quizzed Marc over what this might mean, and asked if things like wireless charging, high-capacity batteries, game controls and even a high-powered flash peripheral might be possible -- to which Dillon replied that all those ideas were possible, and that the only limit was "your imagination." It'll likely depend more on the reception of the device, although be assured that the OS we had demonstrated today looked just as fluid and intuitive as last time.
The Android app client remains on-board, while Jolla has made a concerted effort to appeal to the fragmented app market in China -- we're told the Jolla phone will be compatible with "multiple streams." The device is still pegged to arrive before the end of 2013, in time for Chinese New Year. We'll have our own opinions and a hands-on video (with a color option, we're promised) at the launch party in just a few hours.

Anyone who's tried out the new Hangouts feature in Gmail in place of the traditional Google Talk option got a bit of surprise when they went to make an outbound call from their computer. That feature gets disabled when the new Hangouts replacement is switched on, leaving folks looking to make calls with no other option than to revert to the old Google Talk in Gmail or seek out another alternative. That's apparently just a temporary change, though, as Google's Nikhyl Singhal has now confirmed that both outbound and inbound calls will "soon be available." Unfortunately, he's not getting any more specific than that for the time being. He did, however, reiterate that "Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice," and that "making/receiving phone calls is just the beginning," further adding that "future versions of Hangouts will integrate Google Voice more seamlessly."

Huawei CEO Says Company Isn't Conspiring With Chinese Government
By Samantha Murphy2013-05-09 15:02:44 -0700After not talking to the media for 25 years, founder and CEO of Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei Ren Zhengfei told reporters Thursday it is not working with the Chinese government to spy on the United States.
Huawei has been under fire since a 2012 report from the U.S. House Intelligence Committee accused it along with ZTE of being a national security risk for providing information about the United States to the Chinese government. The report said the companies did not comply with an investigation on its practices.
Zhengfei has denied those claims, according to Reuters: "Huawei has no connection to the cybersecurity issues the U.S. has encountered in the past, current and future."
"Huawei equipment is almost non-existent in networks currently running in the U.S. We have never sold any key equipment to major U.S. carriers, nor have we sold any equipment to any U.S. government agency," he added.
The news comes as Huawei left the U.S. market in April, citing "geopolitical reasons."
“Huawei and ZTE seek to expand in the United States, but as a result of our investigation, we do not have the confidence that these two companies with their ties to the Chinese government can be trusted with infrastructure of such critical importance,” House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) said.

'Draw Something' Head Leaves Zynga 1 Year After Selling Company

Dan Porter, the man who founded OMGPOP, the gaming company behind the popular Pictionary-style game Draw Something, is leaving Zynga one year after it bought his company for $180 million. Porter's departure was first reported by BetaBeat and has since been confirmed to Mashable by Zynga.
"Developing and launching games is a team effort, and we’re proud of the great work the Zynga New York team has done with Draw Something 2," Zynga COO David Ko said in a statement. "Our follow up to the original hit is even more social and engaging, and we’re excited to get it into the hands of our players globally. We thank Dan Porter for his efforts in making the Draw Something franchise a success and wish him well in his future endeavors."
Draw Something represented Zynga's largest acquisition, but since the purchase one year ago, the game has lost much of its buzz. Zynga announced in October that it would have to write off between $85 million to $95 million of the acquisition cost in an acknowledgement that it had overpaid for the company. Meanwhile, Zynga's stock price has plummeted from more than $13 a share to just more than $3 a share now.
To make matters worse, Porter has come under fire last month for saying that Zynga copied games. He later was forced to issue a public apology, in which he claimed his comments had been misrepresented.
Porter, who served as the VP and general manager of Zynga's New York operations, will be replaced by Sean Kelly. Kelly joined Zynga in 2009 and oversees the company's mobile products.
Zynga has lost several other execs in recent months, including CFO David Wehner and the creators of Words With Friends and Zynga Poker.

Hey, you. Yes, we're talking to you. The person who is getting scammed by their cable company.
You're probably paying $300 a month for "high-speed cyber hyper double turbo speed extra secure Internet and premium cable" — aren't you? That company promised you it was the latest and greatest of packages that would save you billions of dollars over the course of a lifetime, so you opted in.
After all, how else are you going to stream Game of Thrones while simultaneously using Pinterest?
But your cable and Internet has been out since last June and you're still waiting for that repair guy, right? Well, here's the cable company you should be investing in. They are honest, they are reliable and, unlike the rest of them, they'll tell you straight up how they are cheating you out of your paycheck.
