Would Mad Men be such a hit without that classy 1960s charm? After all, what's the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce agency without a little sexism, smokes and mid-day drinks? (Boring, is what it is.)

But it is interesting to imagine Don Draper and co. in the Madison Avenue of 2013. Their lives would be far from the scandal and intrigue that surrounded them decades ago (we hope), but so would their tech.

Shutterstock took a dabble into upgrading the characters' personal belongings to reflect a more 21st century lifestyle. Their predictions had the characters swapping pens for cellphones and bad habits like smoking for modern day crazes like yoga.

Travelwide Is an Ultralight 4x5 Film Camera You Can Take on the Go

Large format photography is often associated with heavy metal box studio cameras that, put simply, aren't ideal for lugging around.

Chicago-based camera company Wanderlust is hoping to lighten the load. Last week, the duo — Ben Syverson and Justin Lundquist — started a Kickstarter campaign for a portable and ultralight 4x5 film camera called Travelwide.

Emphasis here on the word film. In an age of all-things-digital, the idea might seem a bit dated. But, Syverson told Mashable, the raw quality you get from film cameras — like this stunning shot he captured from Pão de Açúcar in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — is incomparable to what you might see on a standard DSLR.

"[Justin and I] are both lifelong camera tinkerers and makers — we're always working on some sort of new project," he said. "I started getting into large format back in 2006, but I wanted something that was lighter and easier to travel with."

The Travelwide shoots on 4x5 film, which is about 13 times larger than the usual 35mm lenses most SLRs use. It's slightly larger than a DSLR, but much lighter.

The pair constructed a prototype camera, made from 3D printing, and carried it with them to a trip to Brazil, where they realized it was a viable product. For market, the cameras will be built using rapid injection molding.

"The idea here is that we wanted something portable that you can pack at the last minute," he said. "If you're heading out the door and think, 'Should I bring the 4x5?,' you can because it's so small and light-weight."

One potential downside is that users will need to provide their own lenses, which are available used for around $150, Syverson said. The group includes a helpful list of where to buy lenses on their Kickstarter page.

Pending a successful campaign, the Travelwide will sell for $99. At time of writing, the project was more than $43,000 into its $75,000 goal, with 27 days left to donate.

This Is How Far North Korea's Missiles Can Reach

North Korea on Friday reportedly moved two mobile missiles believed to be of intermediate range to the country's east coast, potentially putting them within striking distance of Japan and American bases in Guam. If the reports are accurate, it's the latest escalation in an increasingly tense situation which may result in a military conflict.

North Korea's threatening language towards South Korea and the United States is becoming increasingly bellicose, going so far as to approve the use of nuclear weapons should a military conflict break out on the Korean peninsula. Propaganda videos from North Korea have claimed the country could turn Seoul, Washington and other cities into a "sea of flames" — but North Korea is notorious for outlandish provocations that simply aren't supported by reality.

It's important to note, however, that there's doubt as to whether North Korea possesses nuclear weapons small enough to place atop a missile or if it would place one of their few nuclear weapons atop one of its often less-than-reliable missiles. So how far can North Korea's missiles really reach? This chart, based on data from the BBC, shows the estimated reach of North Korea's various projectiles.

While the chart can be a cause for concern for those close to North Korea, residents of Alaska likely need not worry: generally speaking, North Korea's long-range missiles are notoriously unreliable. The Taepodong-2, for example, has been tested only once and failed less than a minute after launch. However, North Korea's Unha-3 carrier rocket, not shown on the chart, successfully put an object into Earth's orbit late last year and is partially based on the Taepodong-2 — though it too has experienced failed launches in the past.

It's not known what kind of missiles have been moved to North Korea's east coast, but most reports indicate they are of intermediate range, perhaps able to reach Guam.

There's no guarantee that a military conflict on the Korean peninsula will break out in the near future, and even if fighting does break out on some level, it may not escalate to a nuclear conflict.

Nonetheless, there have been in recent days several signs that some military action may be imminent: Two days before the reports of North Korea's missile movements, the Pentagon announced it was deploying a missile defense shield to Guam, among the United States' first movements of military equipment that represented a clear response to North Korean provocations.

Earlier in the week, the United States moved two Japan-based F-22 fighter jets to South Korea ostensibly as part of ongoing joint American-South Korean military drills. The United States is also is in the process of positioning two guided-missile destroyers in the Pacific near the Korean peninsula.

How Facebook Can Make Money Off Facebook Home

Facebook took a big step on Thursday towards increasing its presence on mobile with the announcement of Facebook Home — a new home screen and app launcher for Android — and the release of the first-ever Facebook phone manufactured by HTC.

Mark Zuckerberg, the company's CEO and co-founder, spent most of his time discussing his vision for reorienting the smartphone user experience around people rather than apps, but as with most Facebook events, he stayed vague on one big point: how Facebook plans to make money off these new products.

"There are no ads in this yet," Zuckerberg said of Facebook Home during a Q&A with reporters after the launch event. "I'm sure at some point there will be."

Unlike some of the other new features that Facebook has unveiled in recent months, analysts we spoke with believe that there is no immediate plan for monetizing Facebook Home and Facebook phones in a way that would lead to a noticeable increase in revenue for the company.

Arvind Bhatia, an analyst with Sterne Agee, says that Facebook's primary goal for Facebook Home right now is to boost engagement and adoption for Facebook on mobile — and for teenagers in particular, a group that Bhatia says "was starting to lose interest." Assuming that there is strong adoption, Facebook Home could serve as a powerful and lucrative platform for serving ads to mobile users.

"This real estate is going to be very, very valuable," Bhatia tells Mashable.

Home would give Facebook a way to let marketers place ads front and center on the home screen rather than buried in an app or website. Facebook might also gain a better understanding of its users' habits across devices, which would help it improve mobile ad targeting. "I think the relevance and the targeting will get better and Facebook will be able to charge much more over time."

The new mobile products might also help Facebook increase the volume of ads it serves and increase impressions by boosting engagement with Facebook's platform, both of which would contribute to an increase in the company's advertising revenue, according to Clark Fredricksen, VP of communications for eMarketer.

As it stands now, Facebook already leads the market for mobile display ads, with eMarketer projecting that it will take in nearly one in three ad dollars in this category in 2013. eMarketer believes it's still too soon to tell whether the products launched this week will increase that share further. "It's unclear whether this will have an incremental impact or a re-distributive impact," Fredricksen says. "We just don't know yet."

Apart from mobile display ads, analysts we spoke with speculate that Home may give Facebook an opportunity to boost ad revenue from mobile app install ads and perhaps even from search ads, if Facebook plays up its Graph Search feature on mobile in the future. The bigger picture for Facebook Home, according to Fredricksen, is that Facebook is looking to be "the starting point for messaging and the starting point for search content and commerce discovery on your phone."

Beyond the potential for advertising revenue, Facebook could also push to get a cut of the revenue from sales of Facebook phones sold by its manufacturing partners like HTC. Brian Wieser, senior research analyst with Pivotal Research Group, notes that there doesn't appear to be a revenue sharing agreement with HTC or any other manufacturing partner for the Facebook phone yet, but "that doesn't mean it won't happen at some point."

All of this hinges on the assumption that smartphone users actually download Facebook Home or by the new HTC Facebook phone, which is anything but certain.

"I think we have yet to see any evidence that consumer demand for this is...," Fredricksen from eMarketer says, before starting over to put it more bluntly. "We've yet to see any consumer demand for this."

Take a Bike Ride Through NYC Without Leaving Your Couch

If seasonal allergies have you avoiding the great outdoors this spring, you can actually enjoy a bike ride through New York City without stepping outside.

Dutch startup Cyclodeo mashes together biking and video to create a digital resource for cycling enthusiasts and casual travelers alike. The startup has captured video of actual bike rides and synchronized it with GPS data for close to 150 kilometers (or about 93 miles) through New York City. On Cyclodeo's site, you can take a "ride" through Central Park or along the Hudson River Greenway.

While you could visit Cyclodeo solely for a virtual bike ride, it's certainly a nifty resource if you're planning a real bike ride through any of the covered cities. In addition to New York, the site currently covers Copenhagen and parts of the southern Netherlands. The videos are all plotted out on Google Maps, meaning you can pinpoint an exact location to see what it might be like to bike there (think Street View, but from a cyclist's perspective).

French founder Samir Bendida told Mashable that he's been developing this platform for the last three years or so. He says the startup grew out of his passion for traveling: "I wanted to find a way to share my traveling experiences."

Moving forward, Bendida envisions Cyclodeo becoming a community-based platform: "Cyclists would put their own videos, which share their own cycling rides from all over the world." He wants to engage the cycling community and hopes to raise awareness by participating in a cycling visionary competition.

Because Cyclodeo is still young, there are some limitations: Contributors currently can only submit videos by invite, and the site only works fully through desktop browsers (so no full functionality on smartphones or tablets right now).

Add Storage to an Android Device With This Mini MicroSD Reader

If you're running out of space on your Android smartphone or tablet and want a quick fix, two Northern California brothers may have a solution.

Bay Area-based Andy and Rich (no last names identified) were initially frustrated that their Nexus tablet didn't have a built-in SD card reader to expand storage. So they developed a mini MicroSD card reader for Android devices, which plugs into the phone or tablet via micro-USB, as explained in the video above.

While the reader can fit on any Android device with mini-USB, the brothers have only confirmed that it works with certain phone and tablet models they've tested with. But to mount a Class 2 card on your device, they suggest using third party software, like StickMount.

The duo are trying to raise $5,000 on Kickstarter to further develop their mini MicroSD reader. With 29 days left in the Kickstarter campaign, they've received over $1,400 in pledges. Backers who pledge at least $8 can get the card reader.
