Microsoft to sell 256GB Surface Pro in the US, but only through certain resellers (updated)

Microsoft announces Surface commercial expansion

July 01, 2013

Microsoft announces business-channel expansion plans, commercial app development program and new education incentives.

REDMOND, Wash. - July 1, 2013 - Microsoft Corp. today announced the initial phase of its business-channel expansion plans for the Surface family of PCs, along with AppsForSurface - a new Surface application-development program for independent software vendors (ISVs).

As part of its measured and phased approach to the growth of the Surface business, Microsoft announced the Microsoft Devices Program, which allows customers to purchase Surface and commercial services through authorized resellers. The two-tier program establishes Ingram Micro Inc., SYNNEX Corp. and Tech Data Corp. as inaugural device-authorized distributors to sell Surface to a newly designated group of device-authorized commercial resellers. Today, these resellers include CDW, CompuCom Systems Inc., En Pointe Technologies, Insight Enterprises Inc., PC Connection Inc., PCM Inc., SHI International Corp., Softchoice, Softmart and Zones Inc. In addition to offering Microsoft's extended warranty and accidental damage, resellers bring a variety of value-added services to the Surface family such as asset tagging, custom imaging, kitting, onsite service and support, device recycling. and data protection. During the next few months, Microsoft will work to authorize commercial distributors and resellers in more countries.

AppsForSurface, a new ISV program that provides devices and funding for Surface-specific business applications, addresses the growing demand for Surface enterprise applications. Current program participants include Airstrip, Citrix, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Sage.

In June, Microsoft announced a one-time offer for Surface RT starting at $199 for qualifying educational institutes running until the end of August in 26 countries, valid for all K–12 schools and universities purchasing direct from Microsoft. In the coming days, Microsoft will expand this offer into the commercial channel starting with Authorized Surface Resellers in the United States. Microsoft has a long tradition of delivering high-quality solutions for education, and this offer is intended to get Surface in the hands of even more educators and students.

Watch Peggy Olson Break Through the Glass Ceiling

Of all the characters we've enjoyed these past six seasons of Mad Men, we've really rooted for Peggy Olson. In early episodes, it was hard not to find her mousy voice irritating, but she's now one of the show's most fearless, vocal personalities. In last week's episode, she barged into Don's office, rightly calling him out for being a "monster." That's a long way from barely making eye contact and apologizing for her every move.

It's been thrilling to watch her transform from a virginal secretary into a junior copywriter, and eventually an indispensable leader with a few notches in her belt. By Thanksgiving of 1968, she's 29, a homeowner, and copy chief at one of the better firms on Madison Avenue. To paraphrase her office crush Ted Chaough, "Hell, we're jealous." And regardless of any trials that doubtlessly lie in store for Peggy in this weekend's season finale and beyond, it's safe to say she's going to land on her feet when it comes to her career.

In order to bid adieu to a season full of leaning in, we've compiled her trajectory from season one through season six into one handy video. Watch it now, and the next time you need to summon up the balls to ask for equal pay (cc: Sheryl Sandberg). Because, yeah, even though the Peggys of the world laid the groundwork, that's still not worked out all these decades later.

HTC applies for 'Fetch' trademark, tracking device passes through Taiwan's NCC

Just what the heck is the HTC Fetch? Well, it's certainly not a phone. In fact, it appears to be some sort of tracking device according to a filling with Taiwan's NCC. Unfortunately, beyond some broad strokes describing the device in a US trademark filing, we're left with only our imagination to figure out how the Fetch might work. Apparently it's a "portable multifunction electronic tracking device for assistance in locating mobile phones, smartphones, cellular phones, portable computers, tablet computers..." The list goes on and on. We do know there's both a hardware (potentially Bluetooth-powered) and software component, and that while there's a lot of talk about finding lost phones or laptops, HTC also sees the potential for "tracking and locating people." Now it's just a waiting game to find out if the company has any intention of actually selling tracking accessories.

Nintendo 3DS image sharing comes to the US through Animal Crossing New Leaf

Now that Animal Crossing: New Leaf has launched in the US, so too has a Nintendo 3DS feature: public image sharing. American gamers who want to prove their mayoral skills can now snap a screenshot and visit a special website to post their images to Tumblr, Twitter or both. The picture sharing has limited usefulness when New Leaf is the only supporting title in the country, but it still marks a welcome (if tentative) step for Nintendo into a more social world.

LinkedIn adds twofactor authentication through SMS

Who knew that tighter security was all the rage these days? Following Dropbox, Google and virtually everyone else, LinkedIn has joined the trendy (if smart) ranks of those offering two-factor authentication as an option. Switch it on and you'll have to enter a verification code delivered by SMS before you can log in with a device that LinkedIn doesn't recognize. That's all there is to the process, really, but it may be enough to prevent ne'er-do-wells from messing with your CV.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 on Verizon

While we already knew that Verizon slipped support for AWS-based LTE into its edition of the Galaxy S 4, it didn't say how those extra frequencies would come alive. The carrier's Mike Haberman has just cleared the air(waves): he tells Bloomberg that Samsung's flagship will get a software update to support AWS bands. Haberman hasn't said when the patch will arrive, although it's contingent on the higher-capacity 4G network rolling out in the next few months. The GS4 isn't likely to be alone, whatever the timing. The Nokia Lumia 928 also supports AWS, and we've reached out to learn if and when the higher-tiered Windows Phone will get an upgrade to reach its full potential.

Canon 50D gains video recording through Magic Lantern RAW hack

It may be time to dust off that Canon 50D you purchased back in 2008. The folks behind the Magic Lantern firmware add-on have pulled yet another rabbit out the proverbial hat (or is it lantern?) by enabling RAW video recording on the APS-C-based DSLR. What's even more impressive is that the 50D lacks video support out of the box, so this new-found functionality is truly magical. This hack comes hot on the heels of the Magic Lantern team coaxing the Canon 5D Mark II / III into capturing 24 fps RAW video. With the firmware add-on installed, the 50D is capable of shooting video up to 1592 x 1062 pixels at 30 fps. There are some caveats, though. First, there's no audio recording since the camera lacks a microphone input and associated electronics. Second, capturing RAW video requires fast CF cards (at least UDMA 6). Third, we now fully expect to see the 50D skyrocket in value on the used market. Hit the break for a few sample videos.

Zach Braff Funds 'Garden State' Follow-Up Through Kickstarter

Anita Li2013-04-29 02:28:48 UTC

Zach Braff is the latest celebrity to successfully fund a film through Kickstarter.

The Scrubs actor raised $2 million in three days to fund a follow-up to his 2004 film, Garden State, according to the Associated Press. Currently, more than 30,000 backers pledged over $2.1 million to Braff's Wish I Was Here, with 25 days left in the campaign.

The actor said he was inspired to turn to Kickstarter after seeing fans flock to the crowdfunding platform to back a Veronica Mars movie.

"After I saw the incredible way Veronica Mars fans rallied around Kristen Bell and her show's creator Rob Thomas, I couldn't help but think ... maybe there is a new way to finance smaller, personal films that didn't involve signing away all your artistic control," Braff wrote on Kickstarter.

Braff added that signing a "typical financing deal" would mean sacrificing a lot to create the film.

Wish I Was Here is about Aidan Bloom (Braff), a struggling actor, father and husband who is searching for his identity. After Bloom can no longer afford to finance his kids' private-school education, he attempts to home-school them, and finds himself in the process.

Rewards for backers include t-shirts, signed posters and tickets to advance film screenings. Those who pledge $10,000 or more get the unique opportunity to be a cast member.

Despite the success that Braff and the Veronica Mars team have seen with Kickstarter, not every celeb has had luck with the platform. Alice Cooper, the godfather of shock rock, failed to fund his project; it ended on April 19 after reaching just over 25% of its $200,000 goal.

Do you plan to back Braff's latest film? Sound off in the comments, below.

Take a Bike Ride Through NYC Without Leaving Your Couch

Cyclodeo-nyc-screenshot2013-04-05 21:21:17 UTC

If seasonal allergies have you avoiding the great outdoors this spring, you can actually enjoy a bike ride through New York City without stepping outside.

Dutch startup Cyclodeo mashes together biking and video to create a digital resource for cycling enthusiasts and casual travelers alike. The startup has captured video of actual bike rides and synchronized it with GPS data for close to 150 kilometers (or about 93 miles) through New York City. On Cyclodeo's site, you can take a "ride" through Central Park or along the Hudson River Greenway.

While you could visit Cyclodeo solely for a virtual bike ride, it's certainly a nifty resource if you're planning a real bike ride through any of the covered cities. In addition to New York, the site currently covers Copenhagen and parts of the southern Netherlands. The videos are all plotted out on Google Maps, meaning you can pinpoint an exact location to see what it might be like to bike there (think Street View, but from a cyclist's perspective).

French founder Samir Bendida told Mashable that he's been developing this platform for the last three years or so. He says the startup grew out of his passion for traveling: "I wanted to find a way to share my traveling experiences."

SEE ALSO: iPhone Powered Bike Trainer Lets You Ride Virtual Roads

Moving forward, Bendida envisions Cyclodeo becoming a community-based platform: "Cyclists would put their own videos, which share their own cycling rides from all over the world." He wants to engage the cycling community and hopes to raise awareness by participating in a cycling visionary competition.

Because Cyclodeo is still young, there are some limitations: Contributors currently can only submit videos by invite, and the site only works fully through desktop browsers (so no full functionality on smartphones or tablets right now).

If you're a biker, would you find a video resource like this useful in your city? Let us know in the comments.

Relive the Wonders of 1997 Through This Nostalgic Mashup

2013-04-02 16:43:54 UTC

Think back — way back — to 16 years ago: Welcome to 1997.

It was a simpler time, when we spiced up our lives with five British chicks, believed we were kings of the world aboard the Titanic, invented Flubber, and Jewel reminded us that dreams last for so long (even after you're gone).

We went to our best friend's wedding with Julia Roberts, and we believed we could fly, even touch the sky. Our Tamagotchis died — countless times — and everyone found out what we did last summer.

We even screamed with Courtney Cox and did the Macarena (not simultaneously, though).

Unfortunately, time machines have yet to be perfected, so our only way to reminisce about a great period from the past is through this mega mashup song by thepeterson. Things were pure, life was good, music came from boy bands.

Listen, and see how many throwback references you can spot. Then tell us your favorite '97 memory in the comments below.
