Toshiba Announces 4K Image Certification to Deliver Color Accuracy and Image Processing

Technicolor Certification Assures Toshiba Consumers The Best Home Theater Viewing Experience

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Toshiba's Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced it is the first Blu-ray player manufacturer to be awarded 4K Image Certification by Technicolor, a worldwide technology leader in the media and entertainment sector. Technicolor is leveraging its expertise in Hollywood color and imaging science to certify that Toshiba's BDX6400 Symbio® Media Box and Blu-ray Disc™ Player will deliver improved viewing experiences for consumers at home.

"It is an honor to have our 4K media player officially certified by Technicolor"
Today, native 4K content is used for production of Hollywood movies, but it is ultimately reduced in resolution for the home to fit accordingly with existing HD disc formats and display panels. While the industry transitions to native 4K content, it is important that consumers are able to enjoy the high-resolution display of UltraHD 4K TVs with their current HD content.

Additionally, entertainment content increasingly comes from multiple sources beyond cable and satellite, including streaming media players, laptops, game consoles, DVD and Blu-ray Disc players. However, the viewing experience of these sources varies drastically due to uneven levels of video resolution, frame rates and compression formats. Technicolor's Image Certification initiative addresses this dilemma and verifies that Toshiba's 4K Blu-ray Disc player solution will push the industry forward while providing consumers with the best viewing experience for movies.

"It is an honor to have our 4K media player officially certified by Technicolor," said Scott Ramirez, vice president of product marketing and development, Toshiba America Information Systems, Digital Products Division. "Passing Technicolor's thorough certification process is a testament to Toshiba's goal to create the highest quality consumer electronics that are ahead of the curve. Technicolor's 4K Image Certification will be a key differentiator in the market to help consumers discern and identify the best 4K media players."

With Technicolor 4K Image Certified products, consumers can be confident of a 4K source device's ability to deliver a stunning 4K Hollywood movie experience in the home from existing HD content. Technicolor has certified Toshiba's 4K image processing technology that up-scales "less than 4K" content to near 4K quality without inserting image-damaging artifacts.

Combining Toshiba's BDX6400 Symbio Media Box and Blu-ray Disc Player with the L9300U Series UltraHD 4K TV by Toshiba will provide consumers with the most stunning picture quality available for existing HD content.

Onkyo's late to the iPhone 5 party with the CS-255 Lightning dock, but considering the company's history of quality we'll forgive it. It may be hard to justify that tardiness given the CS-255's $299 price tag -- somewhere between mid-range and super fancy -- given its lacking power compared to similarly priced docks. But hey, it plays CDs too! It's also worth considering that, for that much money, you could get one of the company's own home theater receivers offering much more power and flexibility. Of course, should you be interested and not an iPhone 5 owner, the CS-255 is also compatible with ... well, anything with a USB input. It comes bundled with two 15-watt speakers and hits stores this August.

Impossible Instant Lab reaches iPhone photographers on August 29th for $299

There's a certain irony to the Impossible Instant Lab taking a long time to develop, but we won't mind (much) now that it has a solid release date. The instant photo kit ships to stores on August 29th, when it will cost the same $299 that The Impossible Project promised during its crowdfunding campaign. Compatibility hasn't changed much since then -- you'll need to use at least an iPhone 4 or fourth-generation iPod touch, and there's no immediate support for devices using Android or other platforms. If that's no barrier, however, you can bring your digital photos to the analog world in a matter of weeks.

The Impossible Instant Lab: Forging A Bridge Between Analog and Digital

The first in Impossible's new line of instant photography hardware turns your digital smart phone pictures into real instant photos.

In October 2008, Impossible bought the very last factory in the world manufacturing Polaroid film and saved analog instant photography from extinction. Now the Austrian company is turning their attention to the future of instant photography with the release of their first hardware: the Impossible Instant Lab.

The Impossible Instant Lab was designed to build a bridge between digital and analog instant photography and via your iPhone, transform any digital image into a one-of-a-kind instant photograph that, no longer confined to a screen, can be shared, exhibited or simply treasured.

As with an instant camera, the image is exposed 'naturally'. Simply select an image on your phone, place the iPhone in the cradle and slide open the shutter on the base. A signal tells you when the exposure is finished. Close the shutter, push the button and the Instant Lab ejects the instant film, ready to develop in the palm of your hand. The Instant Lab is the first device to convert digital images into real analog instant photographs.

At the heart of the Instant Lab is Impossible's brand-new high-precision platform, the Impossible FPU (Film Processing Unit) that processes and develops the new generation of Impossible Color and B&W film. Unlike classic Polaroid hardware, the Impossible FPU features a modern and ecological rechargeable battery allowing the use of the new Impossible film that doesn't contain a battery.

As Impossible Founder, Dr. Florian Kaps, put it: "Our new FPU is the basis of a future range of more exciting and exacting analog instant instruments." The Impossible FPU was developed by the Impossible R&D team in partnership with DHW, based in the former Rollei Factory in Braunschweig, Germany.

The launch of the Instant Lab coincides with the release of an official Impossible Project App for iOS. As well as enabling users to transform their digital photos into real analog photographs with the Instant Lab, the App also provides a platform for scanning, uploading and sharing those analog instant photos. Supporting a variety of social media, the Impossible Project App encourages photographers to share their instant photographs and at the same time get inspiration from the photographs of others; an international community for analog instant photography lovers.

The Impossible Project App also features an online store – a quick and easy way to stock up on instant film.

It will be available in stores August 29.

SimCity for Mac pushed back to August

To put it mildly, the EA Maxis team has learned a few hard lessons about launching only when ready. The company is putting that theory into practice: it's delaying the launch of SimCity for Mac from June 11th to August. The OS X version just isn't "ready for primetime," the company says. As compensation, all Mac buyers will get access to the recent Launch Park bonus that they'd otherwise miss. And Windows users, you're still getting some TLC -- EA Maxis has detailed the impending Update 5 release, which fixes some bugs while delivering big improvements to chat and trading. While SimCity still hasn't shaken its rocky reputation, it's clear that the developers are determined to (eventually) set things right.

Automatic delays connected car platform until August as it seeks to perfect iPhone app

It's an age-old problem: do we clamor for a company to ship a product that's not ready, or do we swallow delays with grace as it aims to deliver when things are good and ready? Such a choice has to be made when it comes to Automatic, the California-based startup which had originally hoped to start shipping its automotive dongle + app platform at the end of this month. Those (including yours truly) who pre-ordered on day one received an email last night delivering the news that things were running a bit behind schedule. The hardware itself is actually already being manufactured, but stellar components are only a piece of the total puzzle. The software -- an iPhone app, in this instance -- still needs more time in the proverbial oven, and now we're being told that packages won't ship until "the end of August."

A three-month hiccup is nothing to scoff at, and Automatic seemingly knows it. In order to sate those who were hoping to use the $70 product during their upcoming summer road trips, the company is giving early pre-orderers the option to beta test the app as it stands today. For those who agree, they'll receive their hardware in mid-June, but they'll be forced to use it with a version of the app that "lacks a few features like Crash Alert and support for multiple cars and users." We'll be keeping a close eye as the situation develops, and will definitely endeavor to pass along a review just as soon as we're able. If you're curious, we've embedded the email in full just after the break.

Show full PR text

Two months ago, we announced our vision to improve peoples' relationship to their cars. Since then, we've been blown away by the excitement surrounding Automatic and by the volume of pre-orders.

Our small team has been working hard to build a seamless connected car experience that works on thousands of makes and models, and we've made tremendous progress. The good news is that the Link – that little device that plugs into your car – is ready and being manufactured! Unfortunately, we underestimated the time needed to complete the iPhone app and we're sorry to say that it won't be ready until the end of August.

When we realized we were going to have to push back the date, we started working on a way to get the core of Automatic's features to you sooner. So here's our plan: Because you pre-ordered early, we're making Automatic available to you as a private beta. If you sign up, you'll elect to receive your Link for use with a beta version of the app, which is stable but lacks a few features like Crash Alert and support for multiple cars and users. We'll gradually roll out Links to beta users starting in mid-June.

If you'd prefer to get your Link with the feature-complete version of the app in August, you don't need to do anything. Either way, you won't be charged until your Link ships.

We're truly sorry for the delay. Thank you for believing in our mission. when.eng("eng.pr.init")when.eng("eng.perm.init")
