Deutsche Borse to open Cloud Exchange, treat computing as a commodity

Deutsche Börse launches marketplace for trading outsourced storage and computing capacity

World's first neutral trading venue for "cloud computing"/ Trading to commence beginning of 2014/ Standardised trading for cloud computing resources/ Clients have free choice of providers

2. July 2013

Deutsche Börse: Deutsche Börse today announced that it will launch a trading venue for outsourced storage and computing capacity – so called "cloud computing" resources – in the beginning of 2014: Deutsche Börse Cloud Exchange AG is a new joint venture formed together with Berlin-based Zimory GmbH to create the first neutral, secure and transparent trading venue for "cloud computing" resources.

The primary users for the new trading venue will be companies, public sector agencies and also organisations such as research institutes that need additional storage and computing resources, or have excess capacity that they want to offer on the market.

"With its great expertise in operating markets, Deutsche Börse is making it possible for the first time to standardise and trade fully electronically IT capacity in the same way as securities, energy and commodities," said Michael Osterloh, Member of the Board of Deutsche Börse Cloud Exchange.

As the first international, vendor-neutral marketplace of this type, Deutsche Börse Cloud Exchange will set and monitor standards regarding the product offering, admission procedure, changes of provider and guaranteed purchased capacity. Clients will be able to choose capacity providers freely, as well as select the jurisdiction that will apply to the outsourced data. The product offering will initially include outsourced storage capacity and computing power.

Product standards and technical provision will be developed in close cooperation with potential marketplace participants and related parties. These parties include representatives from the traditional IT environment, national and international SMEs, and large corporations from a wide range of industries, such as CloudSigma, Devoteam, Equinix, Host Europe, Leibniz- Rechenzentrum, PROFI AG, T-Systems and TÜV-Rheinland.

„The cloud marketplace of Deutsche Börse offers companies a further choice to purchase top secure and tested cloud-services from T-Systems. Due to the high level of standardization this will all be done with great speed and efficiency and with up-to-date prices", said Frank Strecker, responsible for the cloud business of T-Systems.

Founded in May 2013, Deutsche Börse Cloud Exchange AG is a joint venture of Deutsche Börse and Zimory, a Berlin-based specialist in cloud management that ensures that the users connected to the marketplace have easy access to the cloud capacity they have purchased.

Boxee Cloud DVR, RIP

If you're like us, you were wondering what impact Samsung's acquisition of Boxee would have on Boxee's Cloud DVR service. Unfortunately, we don't have good news. Boxee is shutting down the service on July 10th, and customers will lose access to their TV recordings at the same time. We're not surprised by the move, but it effectively shuts the company down within the space of a week. When Boxee's apps, the Boxee Box and the Live TV add-on are either gone or on their way out, there aren't really products left to offer -- it's all Samsung from here.

Cox flareWatch TV beta brings IPTV with 60 HD channels, cloud DVR for $35 monthly

While everyone tries to figure out what the future of TV looks like, Variety reports Cox Cable has crossed over to offering internet TV service to customers in Orange County. flareWatch beta testers can buy a Fanhattan Fan TV set-top box for $99 (up to three per household) and sign up for a TV package that features 90 live TV channels (60 in HD) and includes the usual favorites like ESPN / ESPN2, AMC, CNN, Nickelodeon and TNT, with video on-demand coming soon. DVR recordings take place in the cloud, with 30 hours of storage available for each subscriber.

There is one notable limitation however, as with cable company provided TiVo DVRs, streaming services like Hulu and Netflix are not available. Cox already cloud based storage under the MyFlare brand name, and Variety also mentions the company plans to expand it with music and game services. Other providers have hinted at offering IPTV options and Comcast launched an IPTV test at MIT, but this is the first one publicly available from a major company. If you live in the area, demonstrations are available at several locations, check out the site at the link below and a preview video after the break.

Microsoft's 'Project Mountain' puts $700 million into data center powering Xbox One and Office 365

Microsoft really, really doesn't want your Xbox One's online services going offline. In a near $700 million investment ($677.6 million), the company's opening a new data center in Iowa specifically aimed at powering Xbox Live and Office 365. Microsoft's Christian Belady told Iowa's Des Moines Register that the data center "supports the growing demand for Microsoft's cloud services" -- a much lauded function of both the Xbox One and Office 365. Alongside the $700 million investment, the company's getting a $6 million tax rebate from the state to move in, effective for five years. As for Microsoft's cloud, we'll assuredly hear more about it -- for both Xbox One and Office 365 -- this week at Build.

Feedly launches cloud platform and new web interface ahead of Google Reader shutdown

Feedly Cloud is Now Available to All Users

Seneca once said, "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."

When Google decided to put Reader out to pasture, feedly was given a tremendous opportunity. But it is also an opportunity we have been planning for some time.

Following up on our original post on our Normandy initiative, as well as the June 30 blog post on our new functionality and design partners, today we are pleased to share more good news with the feedly community.

As of today, feedly cloud is now live, providing a fast and scalable infrastructure that serves as the backbone to feedly, as well as a number of connected applications. Feedly cloud is open today to all users visiting http://feedly.com, providing a simple oneclick migration path from Google Reader. And thanks to the great developer community that has gathered around it, providing multiple safe and sound alternatives to Google Reader. With the release of feedly cloud, feedly today transitions from a product to a platform.

We are also today delivering a new, completely stand-alone Web version of feedly.

A fast and scalable infrastructure Feedly cloud is currently processing over 25 million feeds everyday, crunching through billions of articles. We built it to scale, and it is amazingly fast.

A pure web interfaceFeedly cloud also powers a brand new, standalone Web version of feedly (no plugins or extensions needed), making feedly available from any browser, including Opera and
Internet Explorer. This was one of the most requested features, and we are thrilled to
deliver on this today.

Awesome apps

The feedly cloud has an open API which allows third party developers to design and implement great content centric applications that will enhance the feedly experience.

Over 200 developers have contacted us to get access to the feedly API, and many are currently working on building innovative reading experiences. Today we are announcing the first feedly cloud applications:
? Sprout Social
? Nextgen Reader
? Press
? gReader
? Newsify gNewsReader for BlackBerry 10 and for Symbian/MeeGo
? Pure News Widget

Over the coming weeks and months we look forward to adding more names to this list. There are only 10 more days before Google Reader is going away. Built on a fast and scalable infrastructure, powering a great collection of apps, and now complete with a pure web interface, feedly cloud is the best replacement to the Google Reader infrastructure.

Let's all wish Google Reader a happy retirement!

Head to http://feedly.com and migrate your Google Reader to feedly cloud in one click.

The Raspberry Pi-focused XBMC port Raspbmc's June changelog is a lengthy one. Among the changes are new settings, new skins, support for the Stealth Nighthawk F117A device and changes to make booting up faster, among many other things. Getting this month's update should only require rebooting one's Raspberry Pi, and a few new mirrors that have joined the network should make downloading the updated software even faster. That's not all however, because the July update is promising Linux kernel updates, Raspbmc "Cloud" features with automatic settings backup / restore across multiple devices and an unspecified "special announcement."

DNP Google Cloud Print for Android

The official Cloud Print app has finally been released on Google Play, possibly rendering the third-party apps you've relied on over the years superfluous. Using the standalone software will likely be a familiar affair if you've ever printed via mobile devices in the past. Just choose a file saved on your phone, tablet or the cloud, and it'll make its merry way to your Cloud Print-ready device. Note that your photo or document still has to be funneled through your computer if you use a classic, wired printer. Head over to Google Play via the source link below to give Cloud Print a spin.

webOS to receive mandatory system update to maintain access to cloud services

HP Issues mandatory webOS system update

A certificate used on webOS devices is set to expire on July 23, 2013. For the system to be able to use cloud services such as Backup/Restore and Application Catalog the certificate needs to be updated.

Beginning June 6th an automatic update to the Application Catalog will replace the certificate. That means that anyone running Web OS "2.1" or greater will have the certificate installed automatically when the catalog is run.

For anyone who is running webOS versions older than "2.1", or wants to manually install, they will need to go to the App Catalog and select the app called "HP App Catalog Update", download and install it on their system.

After the expiration of the certificate on July 23, 2013 the user will need to set the system time back to a date prior to July 23, 2013 and follow the same procedure outlined above to update the certificate.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Adobe's Move to the Cloud Incites Anger and Other Top Comments

Speech-bubblegood Jessica-fee By Jessica Fee2013-05-13 18:50:09 UTC

In this week's Top Comments, we've focused in on the controversial discussion over Adobe's recent subscription pricing announcement. Does the new subscription-based model benefit freelancers, hobbyists, or professionals? When we first posted the story on our Facebook page, the general reaction to the news was extremely negative. Eventually, however, those who have been using the Creative Cloud Suite began to speak up and explained that the benefits actually outweigh the negatives. Adobe offers a tiered payment plan, and with the cloud, you automatically receive any updates as soon as they're released. Do you think the new subscription model is an improvement, or a regression, for Adobe's Creative Suite?

SEE ALSO: Snapheal Is an Inexpensive Alternative to Photoshop

Our second most-buzzed about story this week was about Bill Gates' take on innovation, the Apple iPad, and the Windows tablet. In the comments section, our readers debated the necessity of Windows on an iPad; should tablets have all of the same functions as laptops, or do they serve a strict no-work, all-play function?

Finally, Robin Williams made the news this week when he tweeted out a picture of himself and Kim Kardashian side by side wearing strangely similar floral frocks. Kardashian was one of the celebrities at The Met's punk-themed gala this week and is rumored to be due sometime in June. Was Williams' tweet too low a blow at the mom-to-be, or was it funny enough to pass by without an apology?

Amazon Cloud Player Launches PC App

Amazon-cloud-player-pc-rotated Lauren-indvik By Lauren Indvik2013-05-13 20:22:13 UTC

As part of its mission to bring its music service "everywhere," Amazon announced the release of a dedicated Cloud Player app for desktop PCs Monday. The release comes less than a week after Amazon announced iOS compatibility with Ford Sync-enabled vehicles.

PC users could already access Cloud Player through their web browsers, but the primary benefit of the PC application is the ability to store music offline. Users can also scan their hard drives for music files that haven't yet been uploaded to their storage locker.

Cloud Player allows users to stream music files they've purchased from Amazon or uploaded to to a cloud-based storage locker. An unlimited number of Amazon songs, plus 250 songs purchased outside of Amazon, can be uploaded to the cloud and streamed wirelessly using one of Amazon's players for free. First launched on Android two years ago, the service is also available on iOS, Mac, Sonos, Roku and (as mentioned) Ford Sync vehicles.

Update: An earlier version of this article said the app was released Thursday. It was released Monday. The story was also corrected to reflect that 250 songs purchased outside of Amazon, rather than 5 megabytes worth of songs purchased outside of Amazon, can be stored in Amazon's cloud locker.

Adobe CEO: The Truth About Creative Cloud

Shantanu-narayenLance-ulanoff By Lance Ulanoff2013-05-06 21:55:30 UTC

Adobe's decision to discontinue the boxed version of Creative Suite and move to a subscription software-based model (also known as the Creative Cloud) stunned many customers, but considering recent moves, like the acquisition and integration of Behance, the introduction of a cloud subscription option and Adobe’s desire to support transmedia activities, none of this should come as a surprise. Even so, customer shock, anger and confusion are well in evidence in the hundreds of comments piling up under Mashable's post on the announcement.

With that in mind, Mashable got on the phone with Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen to dispel at least some of the myth and rumor surrounding Adobe Creative Cloud.

Narayen said that there are more than a few financial changes that come as a result of the switch. Without boxed software, the relationship with channel partners changes (though Narayen didn't say exactly how). In fact the whole financial model changes. Among the new performance metrics Wall Street will look for in Adobe is "number of subscribers" and "annualized recurring revenue."

Narayen also admits that they won't be paying for product packaging any more.

On the other hand, some costs are rising for Adobe: Narayen said cloud services require storage space. There is also the expectation, with cloud-connected services, that updates and innovation will arrive more quickly, "For engineers and the product team, it's a canvas for delivering products and innovation at a more rapid pace."

While this isn't a move solely devoted to defeating software pirates, Narayen says the shift will improve the situation. "It allows us to provide different offerings in different emerging markets without worrying about gray markets."

There's an ongoing debate in Mashable's comments about whether or not Adobe's subscription model will cost Adobe customers more than buying Creative Suite 6 outright (with a perpetual license). Narayen insists that the cost for Adobe CC is now lower for "any customer." Those costs are now more predictable, he added.

There's also, Narayen contends, the chance that customers will save money because they don’t have to pay for additional services that now come with Adobe CC. These include cloud-based storage and even Behance, which allows Adobe CC users to "share portfolios and monetize skill sets," said Narayen.

As for those who just purchased Creative Suite 6, Adobe is offering aggressive discounts.

Whether customers are looking to start out on Creative Suite or are current customers, Narayen sees great benefit in this new path. "To a lot of people, they've actually stated that the lower price of entry is in all honesty a better way for them to become a member of the creative cloud generation," he said.

Adobe's Creative Cloud is not exactly a cloud-based app. Narayen accurately describes it as a hybrid solution. You will still install local software. The subscription model ($29 a month for an app or $49 a month for the full Creative Suite) means you gain access to the latest software updates as soon as they become available in the cloud, as well as all the cloud-based services and integration available to CC members.

No Internet? No problem. Narayen told Mashable the apps will still work. "It's the best of both worlds," he added.

Adobe no longer sells boxed software, though you can by perpetual license versions of Adobes' hobbyist Elements software products. Narayen said Adobe has no immediate subscription-based plans for those products, but the migration to digital copies is the wave of the future. Narayen's advice to the rest of the software industry, "Companies that wish to thrive in this next tech era need to embrace or perish. We’re not only embracing, we’re leading."

Even so, not everyone has broadband access and for those who find downloading Creative Suite-sized apps prohibitive, Narayen promises, "We'll get them the software they need."

In a word, yes. During the Adobe MAX Convention in Los Angeles, the software giant showed off two intriguing prototypes: One a digital ruler and the other a cloud-connected stylus or pen. The pen makes it possible to, Narayen explained, have “all your assets with you on any device.” Narayen cautioned, however, that neither one of these products is shipping.

Narayen, who has been with Adobe since 1998, is the first to admit that he could not have envisioned today's digital landscape 15 years ago. "It's amazing what has happened with technology and what Adobe has done ... We are not just transforming how people make this content, we're transforming how they manage it, how they measure it and how they monetize it."

Perhaps Narayen is so sanguine about the changes because he's been through this before. When Adobe announced in 2003 it was introducing product "collections and suites," customers and industry watchers wondered about Adobe's motivations. Was it all about money? Ultimately Adobe's Creative Suite of products became the standard.

Narayen anticipates a similar kind of embrace for Adobe CC. "A few years from now, people will say, 'How could I even imagine a Photoshop that was not connected to the cloud?'"

What do you think of Narayen’s explanations? Are you ready for subscription-based creativity software? Let us know in the comments.
