Feedly launches cloud platform and new web interface ahead of Google Reader shutdown

Feedly Cloud is Now Available to All Users

When Google decided to put Reader out to pasture, feedly was given a tremendous opportunity. But it is also an opportunity we have been planning for some time.

Following up on our original post on our Normandy initiative, as well as the June 30 blog post on our new functionality and design partners, today we are pleased to share more good news with the feedly community.

As of today, feedly cloud is now live, providing a fast and scalable infrastructure that serves as the backbone to feedly, as well as a number of connected applications. Feedly cloud is open today to all users visiting http://feedly.com, providing a simple oneclick migration path from Google Reader. And thanks to the great developer community that has gathered around it, providing multiple safe and sound alternatives to Google Reader. With the release of feedly cloud, feedly today transitions from a product to a platform.

We are also today delivering a new, completely stand-alone Web version of feedly.

A fast and scalable infrastructure Feedly cloud is currently processing over 25 million feeds everyday, crunching through billions of articles. We built it to scale, and it is amazingly fast.

A pure web interfaceFeedly cloud also powers a brand new, standalone Web version of feedly (no plugins or extensions needed), making feedly available from any browser, including Opera and
Internet Explorer. This was one of the most requested features, and we are thrilled to
deliver on this today.

The feedly cloud has an open API which allows third party developers to design and implement great content centric applications that will enhance the feedly experience.

You know how it goes, you buy a phone on eBay, and it comes with a developer / pre-release version of a major mobile OS. Well, if these images are to be believed, that's at least what happened to one bargain-hunting Windows Phone fan. The screenshots -- said to be taken from a Nokia 920 -- show Windows Phone 8, but with a few new tweaks and features. Most notable, will likely be the notifications, but other tidbits include App list ordering based on frequency of use, week view in the calendar and the option to kill apps from the multitask screen. The phone reports a build number of: 12084.WPMAIN(wpbldlab).20130509-1407 leading some to infer that this version could have been compiled sometime in May. A tease of something to come? As always, hard to tell, but expect the price of second-hand 920s to bump up a little, for the next few weeks at least.

Although the shiny new iOS app and retooled web interface were demoed a few weeks back at MAX 2013, Adobe has released both facets of its new and improved Kuler color selection tool into the wild. The iPhone software enables hue selection with the handset's camera or selecting a previously captured image for inspiration -- with built-in preset moods and color rules to expedite the process when needed. Created themes can then be saved and accessed via both the web interface and inside Creative Cloud applications like Photoshop and Illustrator. The free app is available now in iTunes and a quick walkthrough resides beyond the break.

Flickr's one of the elder statesmen of the online photo sharing world, but in recent years its UI has grown a bit long in the tooth when compared to the eye candy provided by other kids on the social sharing block. That's all changed as of today, as Marissa Mayer's team has overhauled Flickr's look on the web and in its Android app. Out goes the old layout, where text and white space commanded almost as much real estate as your photos, and in comes a tiled layout that's nothing but images.Flickr web redesign screenshots See all photos 8 Photos

The differences are immediately apparent upon logging into the service, as users are greeted with a generous tiled view of their contacts' most recent uploads. The number of stars or comments for each photo is instantly visible on the lower right. Groups and Explore categories are now siloed to the side, with a link to Flickr Blog underneath. Below that is a list of people Flickr thinks you might want to add to your contacts, presumably based on your existing friends list.

Head on over to your own photostream, where all your photos are now given the large picture treatment. Hovering over any given photo populates a translucent gray bar across the bottom that displays the number of comments on the image. Clicking on an image from your Photostream takes you to an individual image page, which is largely the same layout as before -- the picture's up top, with image info, comments and thumbnail nav to other pics in the photo stream displayed underneath. The same feel goes for all other pages in the new Flickr, from your Sets and Favorites to photos from your Contacts. It's a much cleaner, more streamlined experience.

Similarly, the Android app puts the emphasis on images, greeting users with rows of recommended pictures revealed via vertical scrolling, and those rows can be explored individually with sideways swipes. App navigation is hidden in a lefthand sidebar, where users can access their contacts, groups and comment activity directly, along with search and settings options as well. Nestled in the top right corner is a button that launches the camera app to take a shot or enable you to tweak photos already taken using Flickr's built-in filters. None of the features themselves are new to the service, of course, but the UI certainly does make using them more pleasurable.

Today's definitely a big day for Tumblr: there's a refreshed iOS app in the iTunes Store! And, well, a bit of other news, too. But you'll hear plenty more about that later -- for now, it's all about mobile. The blogging platform just updated its application for iPad and iPhone, adding that "fancy new post type chooser" that recently made its debut on Android. The design tweak enables one-click access to a variety of post tools, letting you submit video, chats, links, quotes, photos and text, with colorful icons to match.
