Disney on Demand launches on Amazon's Lovefilm today, adds more titles

DISNEY MOVIES ON DEMAND ARRIVES ON AMAZON'S LOVEFiLM

LOVEFiLM, an Amazon company, has today announced the launch of Disney Movies on Demand on LOVEFiLM Instant, bringing hours of entertainment and the world's most-loved Disney titles to the streaming service.

Filled with a whole host of family-friendly films, such as Disney Pixar's Academy Award® winning "Wall-E" and classic animation "Lady and the Tramp", the launch builds on the existing relationship between Disney and LOVEFiLM, whilst adding to the wealth of magical kids content already available to stream.

LOVEFiLM members can watch titles from the Disney Movies on Demand collection for no extra cost as part of their existing subscription. Titles new to LOVEFiLM and available from launch include critically acclaimed modern favourites such as "Ratatouille" and "Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian", alongside seminal Disney classics including "Dumbo", "Sword in the Stone" and "Bedknobs and Broomsticks".

The tattoo-laden, musically-inclined game developers behind Frequency, Amplitude, Guitar Hero, Rock Band and Dance Central are taking on Disney's Fantasia, this morning announcing next-gen Kinect game Fantasia: Music Evolved. Like its last game franchise, Harmonix is keeping exclusive to Microsoft game consoles with Kinect -- the game is planned for launch some time in 2014 on both Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Fantasia: Music Evolved -- which we're assuming must feature Master Chief somewhere given the naming convention and Microsoft exclusivity -- aims to turn gamers into aspiring orchestra conductors. Er ... sort of. The game is played by using both your arms to synchronously gesture in a variety of directions, with two on-screen icons indicating how to place your arms and which direction you'll be gesturing toward. Ostensibly, the game asks players to conduct various pop songs (Bruno Mars' "Locked Out of Heaven" and Queens' "Bohemian Rhapsody," among others), occasionally punctuated with a push, depth-wise, for various auditory flairs (among other things). You are the sorcerer's apprentice, conducting the heavens (as it were). Moreover, the songs get remixed as you go along, with players choosing one of four musical styles to introduce dynamically as the track continues to play in the background. Like an orchestra conductor, gesticulating your arms this way or that produces the next step of the song you've chosen; all due respect to orchestra conductors the world over, as actual conducting is of course far more complex. Conducting is simply the closest analog to what Fantasia: Music Evolved tasks players with doing. Occasionally, things take a turn for the surreal and -- in beat with the song -- a cube appears (seen above) and you must gesture your arms in a variety of guided movements, thus unlocking an effects pedal. Think of it as a gameplay reward for performing a difficult move, as it were. It's this, and a relatively arbitrary score, that keep the game grounded (somewhat) in the world of video games.

Though music from the original Fantasia film isn't explicitly mentioned as included in the game, a heavy bout of wink-wink nudge-nudgery is clear in Harmonix's official statement regarding the original film's score:

"While we can't announce any tracks beyond the five we're confirming today, there will be some classical music on the tracklist. Without saying exactly which songs those will be, fans of the film will definitely be happy about the choices."

Thus far, the game has the aforementioned two tracks, as well as AVICII's "Levels," Fun's "Some Nights," and Kimbra's "Settle Down," each representing disparate music genres. The five tracks represent 20 percent of the game's artist stable, and each song has two remixes, all of which is played across backdrops ("the realms of Fantasia") meant to evoke the world of Fantasia. When we saw the game running last week in a New York City event space, it was on a PC with a first-gen Kinect and next-gen graphics -- a bit of a hybrid build of the game's two forms, which was an unfortunate byproduct of seeing an Xbox One game before Microsoft allows developers to show games running on next-gen hardware. Thusly, we can't say how much Microsoft's next-gen hardware impacts the experience of playing a Kinect game, and Harmonix reps weren't saying anything specific regarding major differences.

So far, we've covered the "Music Evolved" aspect, but what about the "Fantasia" bit? The experience of playing the game is synaesthetic, and meant to evoke the feeling of Fantasia's dreamlike world. We didn't glimpse any dancing hippos wearing tutus, but the interactive underwater aspect of the stage we saw ("The Shoal") offered some music instrument-inspired takes on sea life. There's also the concept of "tearing" through whatever realm you're in to access the songs you play, adding yet another layer of abstract detachment.

With no movie re-release tie-in on the horizon, Harmonix is being left (mostly) to its own devices with Fantasia: Music Evolved. Disney's offering its license, and finances to support the game's publishing, but is staying mostly hands-off. Even some of the game's remixes are being handled by in-house staffers at Harmonix, including the lead of one of the studio's other (unannounced) in-development projects. We're promised a hands-on with the game at E3 which will use Xbox One tech and the next-gen Kinect, so we'll circle back on Fantasia: Music Evolved next week at the big show. All that said, there was only one question left to ask -- will the classic Fantasia game for Sega Genesis be included, even as an Easter Egg?

"I am fighting for it," Harmonix director of communications and brand management John Drake told us. "It's one of the greatest games ever made. To get the last achievement in the [Xbox] game, you should have to play all the way through Fantasia in the credits, and I've been told that game's too hard. I'm still fighting for it, we'll see." We can only dream.

Disney Picks Electronic Arts to Create 'Star Wars' Video Games

Walt Disney Company has just tapped Electronic Arts to exclusively produce future Star Wars video games for "mobile, social, tablet and online," although Disney will retain some game creation rights within those categories.

Disney and EA announced the multi-year licensing deal Monday — a month after Disney and LucasFilm shuttered long-time Star Wars game publisher LucasArts.

"Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe," Frank Gibeau, president of EA Labels, said in a statement. "Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans.

"The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay."

EA studios DICE, Visceral and BioWare will be responsible for creating the new games.

"Our number one objective was to find a developer who could consistently deliver our fans great Star Wars games for years to come," Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, added in the announcement.

"When we looked at the talent of the teams that EA was committing to our games and the quality of their vision for Star Wars, the choice was clear," she said.

Not everyone is excited by the deal. Some Star Wars fans are showing disappointment. Just last month, EA was voted "Worst Company in America" by a wide margin by Consumerist readers, after a botched launch of SimCity in March that led to players unable to access the game's servers for several days.

The Modern Lives of Disney Princesses

In Disney's fairytale world, princesses chat with birds, sing with dwarves and swim with talking flounder. The biggest worries of these ladies are evil step moms or horrid octopus women. But once their prince comes along, it's sunshine and daisies for these leading ladies.

Unfortunately, the real world is not always as sweet as anything Disney could drum up. A series of artwork by Alana Mays shows us what kind of lives the princesses would have without the magic and glass slippers — trust us, it's not pretty.

Mays reversed the movies' gender stereotypes to create harsh real-world effects. Mays tells Mashable that she applied a critical eye to the "body image" and "male dominance" themes, and used her digital paintings to parody those scenarios.

"In the Disney film Snow White, the Snow White that we all know of is stereotyped as beautiful. Disney gives the impression that it is important to be beautiful on the outside in order to be rescued.

"In this concept, I have created a twist by making Snow White not beautiful. Snow White has passed out from choking on an apple and she is in need of CPR to be saved. A man is about to give her CPR, but because he does not find her desirable, he looks repulsed. This idea shows that if you are not beautiful, then you will not be rewarded."

"In the Disney film Aladdin, the heroine Jasmine has been stereotyped to be a prize. Men desired Jasmine for her title and beauty instead of her inner beauty. The concept shows Jasmine inside of a life size game machine, surrounded by toy cars, to play on the idea that she is a prize or trophy to be won by a male. She is worried as she knows that eventually she will be won by a man rather than be swept of her feet by a man of her choice. This idea implies that women are sometimes seen as an object rather than as an individual."

"In the Disney film The Little Mermaid, the character Ariel is the sterotypical example of comprimises made to meet the concept of ideal beauty. She transformes her tail for a pair of legs and sells her voice to win the man of her dreams. Disney is displaying ideals of beauty through portraying female characters as not good enough the way they are and that they should be willing to change their body for someone.

"This concept shows Ariel getting plastic surgery transformation which shows that women today are focusing on their outer appearance and are going to the extremes of plastic surgery to meet societies' expectations of beauty."

"In the Disney film Sleeping Beauty, the main character Aurora, that we all know of, is stereotyped as beautiful. In this concept there is an un-attractive version of Sleeping Beauty inside of a kissing booth at a carnival, asleep, as she has been waiting for too long for some one to arrive. This idea shows that if females don’t meet the expectations of beauty then they will be an object of ridicule and will not be noticed by a male."

"In the Disney film Cinderella, the heroine is stereotyped as a poor domestic slave. In this concept Cinderella is in an office where she is working but is still wearing her dirty, used kitchen gloves. This shows that even though women have the right to work these days, they still bear the title of being the domestic housewives when they go home."

Disney Pixar's 'Nemo' Sequel 'Finding Dory' Arriving in 2015

Comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres confirmed a sequel to the 2003 Oscar-winning animated movie Finding Nemo will splash into theaters on Nov. 25, 2015.

Dubbed Finding Dory, the flick will employ DeGeneres as the voice of Dory, who Disney Pixar describes as the "friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish."

"I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time," DeGeneres said in a statement Tuesday, coinciding with an Instagram and Facebook post.

“I’m not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating Toy Story 16.

"But the time they took was worth it," she added. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It’s got a lot of heart, it’s really funny, and the best part is — it’s got a lot more Dory."

Director Andrew Stanton will tell Dory's story, which will take place about 12 months after the plot in the first film.

“She won the hearts of moviegoers all over the world — not to mention our team here at Pixar," Stanton said. "One thing we couldn’t stop thinking about was why she was all alone in the ocean on the day she met Marlin. In ‘Finding Dory,’ she will be reunited with her loved ones, learning a few things about the meaning of family along the way."

Finding Nemo won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003.

Finding Dory will bring back Marlin, Nemo and the Tank Gang as well as introduce new characters in an underwater world in the California coastline.
