India launches GPSlike IRNSS1A satellite, aims to complete system by 2016

India will soon have a positioning system of its own. Much like our own GPS, the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) is scheduled to provide location information to civilians and government users alike, with a position accuracy of 20 meters or better. Seven satellites will make up IRNSS, including three in geostationary orbit and four in inclined geosynchronous orbit, which will rotate with the Earth. GPS currently covers the Indian subcontinent, as it does the rest of the world -- like GLONASS in Russia and BeiDou in China, IRNSS will provide additional utility to users within 1,500 kilometers of the Indian mainland. It's expected to come online by 2016.

Sony announced its FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD Media Player a few months ago, and today confirmed it's arriving in homes and on store shelves by July 15th. The $699 box only works with Sony's own 4K TVs, and early adopting owners of "qualifying" X900A sets can expect a $200 introductory discount. Also available is in-home setup and activations free of charge, set up through the 4KActivation.com site once it's available July 8th. Sony's also named the online 4K movie distribution network it's launching this fall -- Video Unlimited 4K -- which will offer films, TV episodes and short-form content for download. For feature films, it will cost $7.99 for a 24-hour rental or $29.99 to purchase. The 4K Player (and its 10 pack-in movies) is available for pre-order now on the US Sony store, expect it to hit other retailers soon.

Vodafone launches a 4G mobile hotspot, suffers from premature dispensation

Camping outside a store for weeks on end has been done to death now, so what can you do to score some early adopter cred? How about buying a device to use on a service that doesn't exist... yet. That's Vodafone's thinking behind launching its first 4G wireless hotspot, two months before its LTE service begins rolling out. The Vodafone R212 will connect up to 10 devices simultaneously, comes with a 32GB SD card reader, a 2,800mAh battery and will, thankfully, connect to the company's 3G network as well. It'll set you back £39 up-front if you sign up for a plan offering you 1GB of monthly data for £10 a month.

ZTE Open, the first Firefox OS phone for consumers, launches tomorrow for $90

When Mozilla said devices running Firefox OS would be cheap, we didn't know they'd be this cheap. Telefónica has just tweeted that the ZTE Open will be launching in Spain tomorrow for €69, which translates to around $90 and is a good $30 less than the cheapest developer unit we'd seen until now. And here's where it gets pretty wild: that price includes €30 ($39) of airtime for prepaid customers. When we played with the Open back in February at Mobile World Congress, we weren't exactly blown away by it, but we're arguably not the target demographic. The real question is whether Spaniards will be willing to sacrifice access to Google's services and ecosystem with devices like the Vodafone Smart Mini now selling for as little as €49 ($65).

As teased by Microsoft last week, you can now get your Xbox Music fix on a browser (and non-MS hardware) starting today. The service has now gone live over at music.xbox.com, offering up a music interface similar to its recent Windows 8 app refresh. It's also curiously able to play music across multiple devices at the same time -- something that streaming rival Spotify doesn't allow. The player itself adjusts to the size of your browser window, like this site, while your playlists can be edited and then synced with your Windows phone, Windows and Xbox 360. At the moment, the web version is for subscribers only. Not sure if it's the music service for you? Don't worry, Xbox Music has kept the 30-day trial it's offered since it first launched on Microsoft's game console. Sample it for yourself at the source link below.

Imgur launches meme generator, fuels your procrastination even more

Imgur Releases Meme Generator to Empower Content Creators Worldwide

Brace yourselves: Memes now created directly on Imgur

SAN FRANCISCO––JUNE 26, 2013––Today, memes come home. In the past, memes have been created elsewhere on the Internet, then uploaded to Imgur for rabid fans to consume and share. Today Imgur announces its own Meme Generator, handing control over the process to its users, and making meme creation easier and more streamlined than ever before. Now, creating, saving and sharing memes can happen directly on Imgur!

To create and share memes via the Imgur Meme Generator, please visit http://imgur.com/memegen.

"Our community has been asking for an Imgur meme generator for a long time, so we hope they're as excited about this new meme generator as we are to deliver it to them," says Alan Schaaf, Founder and CEO, Imgur. "It just makes sense that as more content is hosted and shared on Imgur, we continue to hand over content creation tools to our community. We can't wait to see what they come up with."

A popular meme creation tool was recently banned from Reddit over vote manipulation charges, which escalated the Imgur community's clamor for the company to release a tool of their own. Little did the Imgurians know that the company had Meme Generator in the works. In fact, the tool itself had long been finished, and was merely awaiting integration into the larger site. Even amidst its mobile app launch, the Imgur team launched into action over the weekend, pulling an all-nighter Sunday in order to pull it all together.

"Our community made it clear that this had to be done as quickly as possible, so we committed to doing whatever it took," said Schaaf. "This was no small task – our engineering team rocked it."

Although the build demanded a monumental effort against a tight timeframe, the timing is ideal. Many smaller sites have the basic tools to create memes, however none can do so at the scale that Imgurcan with its audience of more than 80MM users.

Schaaf's goal with Meme Generator is similar to when he first built Imgur: To go beyond reproducing a commodity product by creating something that would stand out in a crowded market against many similar competitors. "When I look at other products I naturally think of ways to improve upon what already exists. We applied that approach to the development of Meme Generator, and built something we think is better than anything currently available elsewhere."

Imgur's Meme Generator features a simple user interface that's more flexible than other tools. Users drag and drop text boxes while the text auto-fits and re-sizes automatically. Additionally, users can choose from templates of all the most popular memes, or upload and create new memes from scratch. Meme Generator will also feature a Memes Gallery to browse and engage with the most viral memes, and remix memes created by other users.

To download and use Meme Generator today, please visit http://imgur.com/memegen.

Netflix Renews Original Series "Orange is the New Black" For Second Season

Comedic Drama from Jenji Kohan to Return with All New Episodes in 2014

Season 1 Premieres Thursday, July 11th on Netflix

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., June 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Netflix Original Series, "Orange is the New Black," the comedic drama set in a women's prison from creator and executive producer Jenji Kohan ("Weeds") will return with a second season on Netflix in 2014.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20101014/SF81638LOGO)

Produced by Lionsgate Television, the hour-long series starring Taylor Schilling, and based on the popular memoir of the same name by Piper Kerman, is set to debut its first 13-episode season on Thursday, July 11 at 12:01 AM PDT in all territories where Netflix is available – U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Latin America, Brazil and the Nordics.

"Jenji and her team have produced a phenomenal series and we're eager to get a second season to our viewers," said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix.

"I am thrilled that Netflix has extended my sentence," said series creator and executive producer Jenji Kohan.

"We're enormously proud of the brilliant work of Jenji, the cast and the entire production team," said Kevin Beggs, president, Lionsgate Television Group, "and we're delighted about this early second season renewal. Netflix has been a great partner on this series and we look forward to our continuing collaboration."

"Orange is the New Black" follows engaged Brooklynite Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), whose decade-old relationship with drug-runner Alex (Laura Prepon) results in her arrest and 15-month long detention in a federal penitentiary. To pay her debt to society, Piper must trade her comfortable New York life with fiance Larry (Jason Biggs) for an orange prison jumpsuit and a baffling prison culture where she is forced to question everything she believes and form unexpected new alliances with a group of eccentric and outspoken inmates. The series' diverse ensemble also includes Kate Mulgrew, Natasha Lyonne, Pablo Schreiber, Danielle Brooks, Laverne Cox and Taryn Manning.

The second season of "Orange is the New Black" is set to begin production later this summer.

"Orange is the New Black" is executive produced by Kohan. The series is produced by Lionsgate Television for Netflix.

Samsung launches 55inch 'flawless' curved OLED TV in Korea

Just as the rumors foretold, Samsung has announced Korean availability of a 55-inch curved OLED HDTV. Priced at 15 million Korean won (around $13,000) Samsung claims its "Timeless Arena" design eliminates potential for defective OLED pixels. It also reiterates the claim LG made when it launched its own curved OLED model earlier this year that keeping all parts of the screen an equal distance from the viewer makes for a better viewing experience. It also supports features found in other Samsung TVs like multi-view that lets two people watch different things at the same time thanks to 3D glasses, and the Evolution Kit CPU upgrade. There's no word on US availability for its flat OLED HDTVs, but the company also launched its new 65- and 55-inch 4K TVs at the same event.Samsung 'world's first' curved OLED See all photos 13 Photos

Update: According to Reuters, Samsung says it has no plans to offer a flat OLED HDTV in 2013, and this curved model will ship outside Korea in July.

Philips launches HTL9100 Fidelio soundbar with detachable speakers

Home Cinema reaches the Fidelio standard

The Philips HTL9100 SoundBar with detachable wireless speakers brings Fidelio innovation, build quality and sound excellence to Home Cinema.

By offering Fidelio quality and innovation in a SoundBar, Philips has created the perfect solution for people seeking the combination of style, convenience and the authentic home-cinema experience - via the unique choice of detachable speakers and surround sound on demand.

Used with the surround speakers attached, the HTL9100 operates as a single sidebar offering high quality stereo or a wide sound stage via virtual surround sound mode.

However, remove and relocate the wireless surround speakers, and the intelligent system automatically switches configuration to multi-channel mode and decodes 5.1 signals as true surround sound.

At the core of the Fidelio SoundBar are high quality TI Class-D amplifiers - with a built-in DAC - powered by a compact SMPS (Switch-Mode-Power-Supply) to provide a full digital architecture, delivering highly efficient audio amplification and premium audio quality.

Multi-channel audio decoding and Philips' proprietary audio features are both supported by a powerful, high quality, Cirrus Logic 32-bit DSP processor.

Using advanced Smart Surround and Equalization technology, the Philips Fidelio SoundBar analyzes and dynamically controls the sonic signals in real-time to provide a well-balanced surround experience from all speakers in the system. Plus, with in-built Orientation Sensors, the main unit can detect horizontal or wall mounted (vertical) placement and initiate Smart Equalisation to optimise sound performance.

Powered by 2-cell lithium polymer rechargeable batteries, the detachable wireless satellite speakers offer up to 10 hours of non-stop playback and can be easily recharged by connecting them back to the main unit. The separate subwoofer also connects wirelessly with all of the system using a proprietary SMSC 5.8GHz wireless audio system to provide robust connection and remove any chance of WiFi or Bluetooth network interference.

The wireless subwoofer also features patented Philips DoubleBASS technology to generate a deep and powerful bass performance and giving the perception of offering bass notes below the physical limit of the speaker. Philips DoubleBASS uses the powerful processing of the system to detect ultra-low frequencies and then recreate them within the audible frequency range of the subwoofer, giving the impression of delivering bass down to an amazing 20Hz.

Versatile and powerful, the Fidelio SoundBar caters for real music lovers, with inbuilt Bluetooth for streaming favorite tunes stored on your mobile or tablet, and simple connection via 2 HDMI inputs, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy a stream of your favorite films and media.

Launched in June for a RRP of £699 the HTL9100 Fidelio Soundbar is a chic and subtle device that makes a loud statement as the beautifully crafted, perfect addition to any living room.

Discovery launches TV streaming apps for Windows Phone

Windows Phone 8 users whose TV habits revolve around MythBusters, Cake Boss and cute pets are in luck: Discovery has just posted three apps for their platform of choice. The new Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and TLC releases share the same basic template, letting fans check show schedules and stream either brief clips or a smattering of full-length episodes. All of the apps support Windows Phone's live tiles, voice commands and calendar reminders, although they're otherwise simple; they lack the second screen features we've seen in iOS versions. If you're just hoping to watch some Auction Kings on the bus, however, you can get your fix through the Windows Phone store today.

SK Telecom launches the world's first LTE-Advanced network, and the Galaxy S4 LTE-A

SK Telecom Launches World's First LTE-Advanced Network

Launched the world's first publicly available LTE-A network with the world's first LTE-A compatible phone, Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A
Offers LTE-A at LTE prices to allow customers to benefit from the faster network without having to pay extra costs
Plans to expand its LTE-A device lineup to a total of seven smartphones in the second half of 2013
Commercialized LTE-A in the entire Seoul area and central cities of Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do, and plans to expand LTE-A coverage to 84 cities nationwide
Expects LTE-A to boost the popularity of ultra high quality broadcasting/video contents and services
Seoul, Korea, 26 June 2013 – SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) announced that it today launched the world's first LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) service through smartphones.
The company achieved such a milestone in only less than two years after commercializing the nation's first LTE service in July 2011.
LTE-A offers ultra-fast network speeds of up to 150 Mbps, which is two times faster than that of LTE, and 10 times faster than 3G network. For instance, LTE-A users can download an 800MB movie in just 43 seconds.

With the commercialization of LTE-A, the company expects to further improve customer satisfaction in mobile Internet services, and increase the use of ultra fast video contents and other diverse mobile value added services.

Achieves another world's first with its advanced network technologies

To commercialize LTE-A, SK Telecom successfully developed and applied the most-advanced mobile network technologies. The company already applied Carrier Aggregation (CA) and Coordinated Multi Point (CoMP), and plans to apply Enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (eICIC) in 2014.

CA, commercialized for the first time in the world by SK Telecom, supports up to 150Mpbs speed by combining two 10 MHz components carriers to form an effective bandwidth of 20 MHz spectrum bands.

With the surge of data traffic worldwide, CA will act as the key enabler for network evolution among mobile operators around the world. According to network experts, CA will be further advanced to realize up to 300Mbps speed by aggregating two 20MHz component carriers by 2015, and become capable of combining three component carriers by 2016. In addition, they expect to see the realization of uplink CA by 2016. The current CA standards allow for up to five 20 MHz carriers to be aggregated.

SK Telecom has fiercely competed with mobile carriers of other advanced nations to achieve the world's first LTE-A commercialization. Up to date, 13 operators*1) of 8 nations, including Verizon, AT&T, NTT Docomo and Telenor, have announced plans to launch LTE-A, and among them Sprint, Telstra, 3 Italia and Yota said that they will do so within this year. However, no carrier, besides SK Telecom, has yet reached the goal by launching LTE-A network through LTE-A compatible phone.
*1) Released by Wireless Intelligence, market research firm under GSMA (as of Jun 8, 2013)

Since launching the nation's first generation analogue network (1G) in 1984, SK Telecom led the popularization of mobile telecommunications service by commercializing CDMA (2G) for the first time in the world in 1996, and introduced video telephony service through the commercialization of CDMA2000 1X in 2000. In 2006, the company opened the era of mobile data communications service by commercializing the HSDPA technology over its 3G WCDMA network using a mobile phone for the first time in the world. Then, SK Telecom has launched the Korea's first 4G LTE in 2011 and successfully commercialized the Multi Carrier (MC) technology, for the first time in the world, in July 2012.

¦ Improves customer satisfaction by offering LTE-A service at LTE prices and introducing a rich device lineup

SK Telecom announced that its existing LTE price plans will apply to the LTE-A service, meaning that customers will be able to enjoy twice faster network speeds without paying extra. The decision comes as part of its commitment to maximize customer benefits and satisfaction through innovative technologies and services.

With the commercialization of the world's first LTE-A network, SK Telecom today released Samsung's 'Galaxy S4 LTE-A.' The Samsung device, the world's first phone optimized to work over LTE-A network, will come in two different colors, red (exclusively available at SK Telecom) and blue.

SK Telecom will embed useful services like 'Safe Message' and 'Safe Data Backup' as basic features in all its LTE-A phones. Safe Message is designed to protect users from smishing (SMS phishing) attacks by enabling them to check whether the message is sent from a trusted source; and 'Safe Data Backup' enables users to upload personal data stored in their smartphones to the cloud server to keep data safe from smartphone loss and accidental deletion. The company also plans to mount these features on all its to-be released LTE phones as well.

Customers can purchase Galaxy S4 LTE-A at SK Telecom's official online store named T World Shop (www.tworldshop.co.kr), or at one of 2,850 authorized SK Telecom T World retail stores. The company has secured an initial supply of 20,000 units of Galaxy S4 LTE-A.

Furthermore, SK Telecom will vigorously expand its LTE-A phone lineup to boost the popularization of LTE-A service. It plans to provide a total of seven different LTE-A compatible smarphones in the second half of 2013.

Begins offering LTE-A in Seoul and central areas of Gyeongg-do and Chungcheong-do, and plans to expand LTE-A coverage to 84 cities nationwide

SK Telecom plans to expand its LTE-A coverage at an unmatched speed to keep offering the best call quality to customers.

To achieve early commercialization of LTE-A, the company, for the first time in the world, developed the MC technology and applied it to its LTE network in July 2012. During the process, SK Telecom designed and built MC base stations in a way that they can support an optimized evolution towards LTE-A.

In March, SK Telecom has launched aggressive plans to expand the coverage of MC base stations to 200 university areas and central areas of 84 cities nationwide. The company has built a total of 20,000 RU (Radio Units) as of June 2013. With MC in place, the company can easily evolve the network to LTE-A s through simple software upgrades.

SK Telecom's LTE-A, launched today, covers the entire Seoul, central areas of 42 cities in Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do, and 103 university areas. Furthermore, the company will gradually expand its LTE-A coverage to 84 cities across the nation.

Plans to promote ultra high quality, large volume and multi channel services

SK Telecom projects that, as mobile connectivity continues to gain importance, LTE-A will promote the development of ultra high quality video contents/services as well as a wide variety of new applications.

On June 27, 2013, the company will launch a group video calling service for up to four users. The service, an upgraded version of the 3G network-based multi-party video conferencing service, will support 12 times better video quality and 2 times clearer audio quality.

SK Telecom's 'Btv mobile,' an IPTV service with 550,000 paid subscribers, will begin providing full HD (1080p resolution) video streaming service, for the first time in the world, from early July. Full HD video streaming requires a speed of 2Mbps or above, which is well supported by the LTE-A network.
Required speed for each level of image quality - SD: 1Mbps, HD: 2Mbps, Full HD: 4~8Mbps

The company will also launch 'T Baseball Multiview,' to enable users to watch two different games on one screen in July 2013. T Baseball is a free, real-time professional baseball game broadcast service optimized to the LTE network. Launched in August 2012, the service is currently enjoyed by 1.1 million users.

Moreover, SK Telecom plans to launch 'T Freemium 2.0,' a free multimedia content package that offers three times more contents – e.g. dramas, TV entertainment shows, music videos, sports game highlights, etc.- than its previous version, 'T Freemium,' in July 2013.

The company is also planning to launch a new HD video-based shopping service in August 2013 to make shopping more fun and convenient for customers. Users will be able to seamlessly watch 6 different home shopping channels on one screen.

Also, SK Telecom's online/mobile music portal service MelOn yesterday opened a new service category to allow users to listen to original CD quality music by downloading Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) files.

Meanwhile, SK Telecom will hold a large-scale contest named 'LTE-A i.con' to boost the creation and provision of diverse innovative contents and applications optimized for the LTE-A network.

Demonstrates LTE-A's ultra-fast speed and strong performance

At today's LTE-A press conference held at SK T-Tower, SK Telecom's head office, the company demonstrated the speed of its LTE-A network by comparing it with those of LTE and 3G.

It also showcased innovative LTE-A-based mobile value added services including MelOn's FLAC files, 'T Baseball Multiview' and Btv mobile's full HD video streaming service.

Moreover, Kwon Hyok-sang, Head of Network Division of SK Telecom, made live video calls from SK T-Tower to Gangnam Station and the company's Daejeon office to show LTE-A's ultra-fast speed.

Park In-sik, President of Network Business Operations at SK Telecom said, "SK Telecom is proud to announce the world's first commercialization of LTE-A. By supporting twice faster speeds than LTE, LTE-A will not only enhance customers' satisfaction in network quality, but also give birth to new mobile value added services that can bring innovative changes to our customers' lives."

AOL Reader launches into private beta, thanks Google for the opportunity

Google: "Eh, we're kind of over this Reader thing. Let's go launch some balloons."

AOL: "Why, thanks guys -- don't mind if we do!"

The above mentioned quotes are still unofficial, mind you, but it appears that AOL (disclaimer: that's Engadget's parent company) is joining Feedly and Digg in an effort to capture the audiences who will soon be forced to flee from Google's Reader product. AOL Reader launched today in beta form, promising to collect "all your favorite websites, in one place." It appears that the design language follows that introduced in the entity's Alto mail product, and if you've forgotten your AOL password, fret not -- those who request (and receive) an invite will be able to sign in via Facebook, Google or Twitter. Oh, and judging by the shot above, it's designed to work universally across screen sizes and devices, including your tablets, phones, desktops, laptops and space-age computational creations. Of note, it appears that the sign-up forms aren't entirely active just yet, as we're hearing that the bona fide launch won't occur until next week.

Update: We've confirmed that invites will be accepted starting on Monday, June 24th.

LG launches TV set and allinone PC with 29inch 219 ultrawidescreen

Remember LG's EA93, that eye-catching 29-inch 21:9 "ultrawidescreen" monitor we played with at IFA last year? Well, it's just spawned a couple offspring. Today in Korea, the company launched a TV set and an all-in-one PC which use the same 29-inch IPS panel with the same 21:9 aspect ratio, 2,560 x 1,080-pixel (WQHD) resolution and 178-degree viewing angles.

LG's new all-in-one PC boasts a standalone TV tuner with instant-on (no booting required) and simultaneous PC and TV operation (PiP and several split screen modes). Details are few, but we know it features an Intel Core i5 CPU, NVIDIA GeForce GT640M GPU (3D capable) and HDMI / MHL inputs (to use the display as a monitor). The PC comes pre-loaded with an instant messaging app (and matching mobile version) which lets users watch television while chatting.

The TV set supports PiP and split screen, including a 16:9 plus 5:9 mode (HD broadcast plus connected smartphone), and offers a comprehensive set of inputs (DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI and MHL). Pricing is 1.49 to 2.29 million won ($1,315 to $2,021) for the PC (based on configuration) and 690,000 won ($609) for the TV.

In London, Tom Ford Launches ‘Luxury’ T-Shirts

LONDON — If I hadn’t known the Tom Ford menswear presentation was today, I’d have guessed it anyway. A friend whose office happens to be in the same building as Ford’s texted me at 9 a.m.: “There are two hot male models opening the front doors for everyone. I’m going to be smoking a lot today.”

It was a trademark move for the brand — along with refusing to release images immediately — and the setting was equally unmistakable: Plush grey furnishings, no natural light, the heady fragrance of Tom Ford candles, and the usual sprinkling of models in suits, handing out drinks and taking coats. With the journalists at my appointment dressed almost exclusively in black, the event had the feel of a designer funeral parlor.

That is, until we walked into the huge showroom dedicated to the collection, which can accurately be summed up as: Everything, in every color. Ford was on hand to present his favorite pieces. Spring 2014 sees the return of the bestselling jacket silhouette he developed for Daniel Craig — plus the introduction of T-shirts, which he warily described as “a little pared down for us” but insisted were of luxury quality.

Along with those, Ford chose “soft shoes with everything.” They’re mostly tasseled velvet slippers in bright, eye-popping prints and beautifully hand-embroidered tapestry.

As usual, there were no photographers allowed, so we’ll have to wait until the brand coyly releases a lookbook.

TCL launches 5inch 1080p idol X S950 smartphone with ultrathin bezel, $280 price

In a world obsessed with body image, we knew it wouldn't be long before our smartphones would start embarking on fad diets. The latest to show off its lack of curves is TCL's China-centric Idol X (S950), which can squeeze into a 6.9mm-thin pair of jeans. Just like the Alcatel version we saw at MWC, this handset comes with a 1080p display, which is bordered by an equally svelte 1.7mm bezel. Internals-wise, Android 4.2 is running on a quad-core, 1.5GHz MediaTek MT6589T chip, 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. On the imagine front, the phone has a hefty 13.1-megapixel primary camera and a two-megapixel front-facing lens. Despite those heavyweight specs, the unit is marked up for a reasonably cheap 1,699 yuan -- $280 to you and me.
