LinkedIn adds twofactor authentication through SMS

Who knew that tighter security was all the rage these days? Following Dropbox, Google and virtually everyone else, LinkedIn has joined the trendy (if smart) ranks of those offering two-factor authentication as an option. Switch it on and you'll have to enter a verification code delivered by SMS before you can log in with a device that LinkedIn doesn't recognize. That's all there is to the process, really, but it may be enough to prevent ne'er-do-wells from messing with your CV.

LinkedIn status updates can now include photos, other types of files

Given how simple and common it is to do it on Facebook, Twitter or Google+, you'd think being able to share images as part of a status update wouldn't be anything novel at this point. But for those inhabiting the popular (and inspiring) social networking site LinkedIn, this hasn't exactly been the case -- and that's about to change. As of today, users are able to add a little more flavor to things shared on the site, with LinkedIn letting it be known that they can now easily enclose more than just text when using the share box. And while picture uploads are certainly all the buzz, LinkedIn's also making it possible to include other file types, such as documents and presentations. Currently, the new feature only allows uploads to be done via the desktop version of the website, however LinkedIn did tell CNET that the content "will be viewable inside the mobile apps."

LinkedIn Bans Users From Promoting Prostitution, Escort Services

Linkedin-prostitution Seth-fiegerman By Seth Fiegerman2013-05-14 01:00:53 UTC

LinkedIn is used by professionals of all types, but it looks like prostitutes and escorts will have to find another social network to promote themselves.

The social network updated its user agreement terms on Monday, adding an interesting clause, which caught the attention of one of our readers. Under a section entitled "Don't undertake the following," LinkedIn now includes this statement:

Upload, post, email, InMail, transmit or otherwise make available or initiate any content that: Even if it is legal where you are located, create profiles or provide content that promotes escort services or prostitution.

A LinkedIn rep confirmed to Mashable that the wording is new, but noted that the social network has always prohibited users from "unlawful" activities. The reason for the new wording, according to the rep, is that there are some countries in which LinkedIn operates, where prostitution is actually legal.

"In the old [user agreement], we had it covered by saying that one could not use a profile to promote anything 'unlawful,'" the rep said. "However, in some countries, that activity actually is lawful." With that in mind, LinkedIn decided to be a little more explicit about banning these professions from the site, regardless of what a country's laws might be.

Happy 10th Birthday, LinkedIn!

Linkedin-stockSeth-fiegerman By Seth Fiegerman2013-05-06 16:52:05 UTC

Back on May 5, 2003, Reed Hoffman launched LinkedIn in his living room and asked several hundred of his friends and colleagues to join. Ten years later, the social network for professionals has more than 200 million users, 3,700 employees and 26 offices around the world.

Looking back, it almost seems inevitable that LinkedIn would become a huge hit, but it took awhile before the network really started to take off. On some days, as few as 20 people signed up to use the service.

"At the end of our first month, we had 4,500 members in the network," Hoffman wrote in a post Sunday to commemorate the 10th anniversary of launching LinkedIn. "10 years later, we’re honored and humbled that so many of you have made LinkedIn a part of your daily professional lives."

It's an accomplishment for a startup in any industry to survive for a decade, but it's particularly impressive for Internet companies to enjoy that kind of longevity. LinkedIn was founded in the aftermath of the Dot-Com bust, at a time when the biggest social networks were Friendster and MySpace.

LinkedIn launched before most of the social networks that are considered big players today. It's about a year older than Facebook, three years older than Twitter and eight years older than Google+ — though it's younger than Google itself, which launched in 1998.

Unlike some of its competitors, LinkedIn's team focused early on creating a business model. In 2005, two years after launching, LinkedIn introduced job listings and tiered subscriptions to generate revenue. Now, LinkedIn is generating more than $300 million in revenue each quarter.

To celebrate its first decade as a company, LinkedIn put out a collection of pictures showing how the website has evolved over the years from a relatively static page with some basic information about your professional connections to a dynamic social network for businesses and individuals alike.

LinkedIn Improves Its Search

Linkedin-magnifiedTodd Wasserman2013-03-25 15:06:20 UTC

Following in the footsteps of Facebook, which recently overhauled its search, LinkedIn on Monday announced a revamped search with auto-complete, suggested searches and other enhancements.

The search is now streamlined as well, so you no longer need to search for companies, people and jobs separately. "Now, all you need to do is type what you’re looking for into the search box and you’ll see a comprehensive page of results that pulls content from all across LinkedIn including people, jobs, groups and companies," LinkedIn's blog explained.

Among the new features:

Auto-complete: LinkedIn will suggest options for what you're searching for. Suggestions will improve the more you search thanks to a smarter query intent algorithm.

Suggested searches: As LinkedIn explains, "now when you type in a search term such as 'product manager' you’ll see example search queries for people or jobs related to product manager as well as a preview of top results to help you find what you’re looking for in one click."

Enhanced advanced search: Now you can use filters like location, company and school, among others.

Automated alerts: LinkedIn will save your searches and alert you when the results change.

The move comes two months after Facebook introduced Graph Search, which similarly helps users better search the network via variables like location and interest. In both cases, the intent appears to increase engagement, serve up more relevant ads and dissuade users from searching on Google instead.
