Here's a nice little feature for those of us who love to post images on the internet. Bing has added the ability to refine image results by license. The addition's simple enough to use -- just do a search and pull the appropriate license from a drop down on the top of the results page, alongside options for date, size and color. Selections include public domain and options like "free to modify, share and use," based on the Creative Commons licensing system, so there's no doubt as to precisely how you can incorporate them into your own posts. Google's had a similar option on its own search engine for some time -- albeit one's that's a bit less prominently displayed.

Google Field Trail adds Gmail contact info to search results, promises Google profile support soon

If you've already signed up to Google's experimental field trials, you might have started to notice people you know appearing within search queries. Expanding on shipping and flight results offered previously, Google's pulling that information from your Gmail account, meaning that you'll be able to poll for contact numbers, addresses (and more) through the search box. Of course, only you will be able to see the results and the beta feature can even link up to voice search. It currently supports all of your Gmail contacts, while Google+ connections are in the pipeline for future field tests. You can sign up to the trials at the second link below.

'Bing for Schools' tailors Microsoft's search engine to K-12, cuts ads and filters adult content

Calling All Schools: Join The Bing For Schools Program!
People search in many different places, for many different things. And while we tend to talk about Bing as one search engine, it is a little more like a Swiss Army knife, responding to different contexts and intents to provide the best possible results to help people find and do what they need.

Today, we're announcing a new initiative to give one context in particular a special treatment: we're helping our nation's schools to teach digital literacy skills. Starting later this year, Bing For Schoolswill offer schools in the U.S. the option to tailor the Bing experience for K-12 students by removing all advertisements from search results, enhancing privacy protections and the filtering of adult content, and adding specialized learning features to enhance digital literacy.

The program is completely voluntary: schools have the choice of participating or keeping the normal Bing experience. For those that opt-in, Bing will enable the experience across all searches from within the school's network on Bing.com, without any need for special software or a different search address. And of course, Bing For Schools is free for any school or districts wishing to participate.

While we aren't ready to go into too much detail, as we're still finalizing what will be available in the first iteration, here are a few things you can likely expect:

Keeping Our Kids Focused on Learning:As a country, we've set schools aside as a special place that is focused on learning, and have traditionally kept advertising out of that environment. Bing For Schools removes ads from the search experience, keeping with our strong belief that schools are for learning and not selling.

Protecting Our Kids:Bing already offers the ability to filter out adult content with SafeSearch, but with Bing For Schools, SafeSearch will automatically default to the strict setting and remove kids ability to change it.

Educating Our Kids: In addition to the beautiful Bing homepage images, which feature hotspots that encourage exploration of new and unexpected topics, Bing For Schools will offer short lesson plans that teach digital literacy skills that are related to search and tied to the Common Core. For example, thispicture of a sloth might be coupled with the question "How many sloths could live in one square mile of jungle?" and a lesson helping students use search tools and critical thinking to find potential answers.

As we look to begin another school year, we'll make more information available. For now, interested educators and parents can find out more at Bing.com/schoolsand register to receive updates and information on how they can encourage their school to participate and support the program.

Bing Boards introduce curated content, alliteration to search results

Bing might not yet have achieved true verb status, but it's definitely making all the right moves to get there. The latest twist on search? Curated content in search results. It's an experimental feature at the moment -- live in the US, but possibly not all territories just yet -- that delivers collections of images, videos or links relating to your query a-la Google's Knowledge Graph, but curated by a person (not an algorithm). Microsoft's testing the waters with a hand-picked selection of food and lifestyle bloggers right now, but hopes to expand this to more topics as the idea grows. Google updates Gesture Search, now recognizes over 40 languages

Gesture lovers and polyglots rejoice! Yesterday, Google updated Gesture Search for Android phones and tablets, making it compatible with even more languages. The app provides quick access to music, contacts, applications, settings and bookmarks -- to name some -- by letting users simply draw characters on the screen. It now recognizes over 40 languages and even handles transliteration, which comes in handy in Chinese, for example, where some native characters require more strokes than latin equivalents. Gesture Search started life as a Google Labs project back in March 2010 and received several tweaks over the years, including tablet support last fall. So go ahead: download the latest version from the Play Store and swipe away.

Sony's Google TV box gets a refresh, NSZGS8 adds voice search ready remote

Sony has just announced a new Google TV set-top box, the NSZ-GS8. Apparently replacing last year's NSZ-GS7 that lead the charge of second generation ARM-powered Google TV hardware, this one appears to be quite similar. As seen in the picture above (check after the break to see the old remote for comparison) it adds a microphone this time around, necessary to enable the voice search features added to the Google TV platform last fall. We're not seeing any other changes, but we'll let you know if we hear of any differences. In lieu of actual new devices, Google TV fans can at least take heart that Sony is continuing development on the platform -- good to hear after the NSZ-GP9 Blu-ray player that was also announced last year ended up being cancelled prior to its release. Like its predecessor, the NSZ-GS8 carries a sticker price of $199 and should reach stores by early July.

Bing Desktop adds inline searching, news at a glance

Microsoft wants Bing Desktop to transcend the limits of web-based search, and that's especially clear with a newly posted app update -- it's all about doing what most browsers can't. The software brings inline searching that lets users run Bing queries on websites, PDFs and Word files just by selecting text. Newshounds also don't have to wade into every article now that there's both at-a-glance previews and a trending stories section. We suspect most users won't mind the real-time weather forecasts and live Facebook notifications, either. Existing Bing Destkop users should automatically receive the new features in the days ahead, but those who refuse to wait can grab the upgrade straight from the source.

Google's conversational search goes live with latest version of Chrome

After revealing it at I/O 2013 only days ago, Google's new conversational voice search function is up and running on Chrome 27. If you've got that version, you'll now get a spoken response on top of a web page display when using the voice search function (the microphone in the main search window), for starters. More interestingly, the new feature also includes semantic search, meaning you can ask follow-up questions without repeating needless info -- for instance, "who's the CEO of GE?" can now be followed up with "how old is he?" and Google will know who "he" is. We gave it a spin for ourselves and found that when it worked, it worked well, however, the system may be overwhelmed by the launch and is giving us a "no internet connection" message most of the time -- not exactly what we're looking for.

Reporters covering events such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings or the Boston Marathon bombings turned immediately to Instagram to source photos from the scene — a difficult endeavor, given the limitations of Instagram's in-app search to hashtags and usernames.

Enter Al Shaw, news application developer at ProPublica, a non-profit news organization focused on investigative journalism. He created an open-source tool that allows users to search Instagram by place and by time. Specifically, you can search by start date and end date, address and distance from that address. There are some limitations: You can't, for example, combine those searches with text or hashtags — Instagram's API doesn't allow that, Shaw said — and results are confined to the last few months.

ProPublica staffers have already used the tool to surface a photo taken of Bolyston Street a few minutes after the Boston bombings, and a photo of Newt Gingrich outside the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Here's what they pulled up from a search at the New Orleans Fair Grounds last Thursday, where the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival was taking place:

To use the tool, you'll need to download the Ruby web app from GitHub and run it on your desktop. Shaw says ProPublica may or may not release a more consumer-friendly (i.e., web-hosted) version of the app in the future.

Polyvore iOS App Update Adds Search

Polyvore, the official iOS app of the popular fashion-focused social e-commerce site of the same name, has just received a major update. In addition to the obligatory bug fixes, the new update brings search (finally!), pinch-to-zoom, trends and profile editing.

Beginning with the new version of Polyvore, you can now perform searches across the Polyvore network right within the app. The app now has a handy search button at the top right corner of the main Browse screen. Tapping this lets you search for Polyvore products, sets and members.

The app now also has support for pinch-to-zoom. Something caught your fancy in the app? Just pinch to zoom into the details of the sets or products you're interested in having a closer look at.

And if you want to see what's trending in the Polyvore community, just go to the Shop tab and see the latest trends on which you can base your style shopping.

Finally, the Polyvore app now lets you edit your profile from the Me tab.

Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 5.0 or later, Polyvore for iOS is available in the App Store for free.

LinkedIn Improves Its Search

Following in the footsteps of Facebook, which recently overhauled its search, LinkedIn on Monday announced a revamped search with auto-complete, suggested searches and other enhancements.

The search is now streamlined as well, so you no longer need to search for companies, people and jobs separately. "Now, all you need to do is type what you’re looking for into the search box and you’ll see a comprehensive page of results that pulls content from all across LinkedIn including people, jobs, groups and companies," LinkedIn's blog explained.

Among the new features:

Auto-complete: LinkedIn will suggest options for what you're searching for. Suggestions will improve the more you search thanks to a smarter query intent algorithm.

Suggested searches: As LinkedIn explains, "now when you type in a search term such as 'product manager' you’ll see example search queries for people or jobs related to product manager as well as a preview of top results to help you find what you’re looking for in one click."

Enhanced advanced search: Now you can use filters like location, company and school, among others.

Automated alerts: LinkedIn will save your searches and alert you when the results change.

The move comes two months after Facebook introduced Graph Search, which similarly helps users better search the network via variables like location and interest. In both cases, the intent appears to increase engagement, serve up more relevant ads and dissuade users from searching on Google instead.
