Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 series to hit US on July 7th, prices start at $199

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Portfolio Offers Consumers New Variety and Personalized Experiences for Staying Connected

As consumer tablet usage swells, new consumer research shows demand for more choice and Samsung's new 7", 8", and 10.1" tablets deliver

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. – June 24, 2013 – Samsung Electronics America, Inc. today debuted three new tablets as part of the Galaxy Tab 3 family, allowing consumers to choose which tablet suits them best. The 7 inch, 8 inch and 10.1 inch Galaxy tablets offer a range of screen sizes and a suite of experiences built for a broader set of individual and family preferences, making this lineup of tablets ideal for both home and on-the-go uses. The Wi-Fi-enabled Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio will be available in three form factors: Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and Galaxy Tab 3 10.1., and will be available in the U.S. beginning July 7, with pre-orders starting tomorrow.

"Samsung's industry-leading smartphones, Note devices and tablets address consumers' diverse demands and personal preferences," said Nanda Ramachandran, vice president of emerging business at Samsung Telecommunications America. "The Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio offers consumers more options for tablets that serve as their ultimate smartphone companion, the center of home and on-the-go use, and mobile devices packed with content and services."

New consumer data* from Forrester Research validates that tablets are quickly becoming a central mobile device for consumers. Specifically, 49 percent of U.S. consumers who own both a mobile phone and tablet prefer the tablet as their primary device to go online. Data from the same Forrester survey further indicates that across 25 types of tablet applications there is no single dominant use of tablets by users. The typical user is more well-defined by their lack of uniformity as evidenced by the fact that they engage in a widely varied mix of five to six different application types in a given month. Only games top the 50 percent threshold for all tablet users – so it is obvious that each consumer is looking for a customized device that fits their personal needs on functionality in addition to size, price, power and connectivity. Whether reading an e-book, engaging on social networks, or allowing the kids to play games, the Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio has something for everyone.
"In addition to providing consumers greater variety in terms of size, form factor, price points and experiences, the Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio will be widely available for purchase from a multitude of retail channels further reinforcing Samsung's commitment to delivering personal choice to all," said Travis Merrill, vice president of tablet marketing at Samsung Electronics America.

Familiar Galaxy Experience

The Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio blends the familiar Galaxy family feel in sleek and slim designs with compelling content and services that consumers will want to use in their everyday lives. Created to be the perfect companion to the Galaxy line of smartphones, the Galaxy Tab 3 devices give consumers a seamless transition of content and services between their various Galaxy products. Similar to the Galaxy Note 8.0 and Galaxy smartphones, physical home and capacitive buttons are included.

Home Entertainment Hub

The Galaxy Tab 3 has various form factors and light-weight builds, which quickly and easily transition into the center of the home. Research shows that 85% of tablet users watch TV while using their tablet, with 41% of them doing this daily.** For this consumer, each Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio device's built-in IR blaster turns the tablets into a universal remote and can activate Samsung's innovative WatchONTM service. This service recommends TV shows and on-demand content, enabling the tablets to function as the hub of the living room and king of second screen consumption.

Packed with Content

This newest portfolio also makes discovering, accessing and sharing new content, including over 750,000 apps, from the Google Play and Samsung Apps stores even simpler. The Galaxy Tab 3 makes it convenient to stay connected on-the-go, balancing any number of tasks, such as emailing, managing your schedule, social networking, online shopping, reading, playing games and streaming content.
In addition, each of the devices in the Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio will come with a bevy of content value through pre-loaded content and Galaxy Perks available at www.samsung.com/us/galaxyperks. Specifically, hundreds of dollars' worth of content, including a $10 voucher for the purchase of applications, books, movies and music in Google Play; one year of free Boingo hotspot service; three months free Hulu Plus service; two years free DropBox Service with 50GB storage space; and more.

The Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 is aimed at consumers who are in the market to purchase a portable tablet with all the features and reliability they need to stay connected throughout their daily activities. Built for portability, the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 allows users to consume and manage content on-the-go. It is compact enough to easily slide into handbags or a jacket pocket so that consumers on-the-go will appreciate its compact size and lightweight design.

The premium Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 product is thin, lightweight, feature-packed and powerful, making it the ideal portable tablet for on-the-go performance. With Samsung's built-in Reading Mode, the Tab 3 8.0 is the perfect e-reader-sized tablet.
New for the Galaxy Tab family of devices is Samsung's Multi-Window functionality. Following the popularity of the feature on Note devices, Multi-Window comes to the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. Offering true PC- like multi-tasking, consumers can use two apps side-by-side, with support up to 20 applications, including Polaris Office, Google Chrome and Facebook.
The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 offers a larger HD screen optimized for entertainment – watching movies and playing games. With Samsung's WatchON TV recommendation service, built-in IR blaster and 10.1-inch screen, the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 is the new hub of the living room. As a second screen companion and perfect tablet for viewing content and watching movies, the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 transforms the ultimate content-consumption device.

The latest Galaxy Tab family is also SAFETM (Samsung for Enterprise), allowing users to work and play with confidence that their photos, emails and contacts are protected. The portfolio also includes expandable memory up to 64GB through a microSD card.
This newest family comes in two color options – White and a unique Gold Brown. The Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, 8.0 and 10.1 will be available for purchase from major retailers nationwide on July 7 with pre-sales beginning June 25 at Best Buy/Best Buy Mobile, Amazon, Wal-Mart, h.h. Gregg, Office Depot, Toys 'R' Us, P.C. Richard & Son, Fry's, Newegg, Sears and Samsung.com. The Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio will be priced at $199, $299 and $399, respectively.

Netflix signs up Dreamworks for multiple new original TV series, promises over 300 hours of programming

Netflix To Premiere DreamWorks Animation's Branded Slate Of New Original TV Series

Largest deal for original content in Netflix history will give members in the U.S., Canada, Latin America and Europe exclusive access to new original television series based on the studio's beloved franchises and characters

Netflix Inc. and DreamWorks Animation (Nasdaq: DWA) today announced a multi-year deal making the world's largest Internet TV network the premiere home of new original series from the award-winning creators of global box-office hits including the Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon franchises.

This agreement, which marks the largest deal for original first-run content in Netflix history, is also the first time DreamWorks Animation's beloved characters will be introduced into the television market as a branded collection of shows.
The groundbreaking deal, which encompasses over 300 hours of new programming, is a cornerstone of a major initiative by DreamWorks Animation to greatly expand its television production and distribution worldwide. The new shows will be inspired by characters from DreamWorks Animation's hit franchises and upcoming feature films as well as the vast Classic Media library, which DreamWorks acquired in 2012 and includes some of the most popular animated characters in history.

With the first series expected to begin airing in 2014, Netflix will premiere these new DreamWorks Animation shows in all the territories in which it operates.

"DreamWorks Animation is a valued partner in our global efforts to provide families the most engaging stories delivered however, whenever and wherever they want," said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. "This deal represents a major expansion of what's already a phenomenal relationship, allowing us to bring beloved DreamWorks characters to the 40 countries where Netflix operates and setting the stage for us to innovate together as we expand into new markets."

"This is an unprecedented commitment to original content in the internet television space," said DreamWorks Animation Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Katzenberg. "Netflix is a visionary company that continues to redefine the way audiences watch television and it is a thrill to add to their growing momentum."

In February, Netflix and DreamWorks announced their first ever Netflix Original Series for kids based on the highly-anticipated film Turbo, premiering on July 17. Turbo F.A.S.T, an episodic animated series which picks up with the speedy snail where the feature film left off, will be available in all Netflix territories beginning in December.

Also coming exclusively to Netflix in the U.S. and Latin America next year will be new DreamWorks Animation feature films, beginning with the global hit The Croods, which grossed more than $575 million at the worldwide box office , followed by Turbo and the big screen adaption of Mr. Peabody and Sherman, which opens in theaters in March of 2014.
Always commercial free, the content in the kids section of Netflix is curated in conjunction with ratings and reviews from Common Sense Media, a leading non-profit organization that provides independent, trustworthy ratings, reviews and information to help parents make great media choices. In addition to character-based selections, the service displays rows of TV shows and movies organized by easy-to-understand genres such as superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs and girl power. The unique Netflix technology provides each member with a personalized experience based on preferences and favorites.

Now that Haswell's available in consumer-grade laptops, it's time to look at what's next on Intel's to-do list. A leaked slide-deck is claiming that Haswell-E, the enthusiast version of the chip, is coming in the second half of 2014. The documents also promise that Intel will axe the 4-core base model in favor of 6-and-8-core editions of the CPU, which can pack up to 20MB of L3 cache. At the same time, the company is likely to release the Wellsburg motherboard chipset, which can support DDR4 RAM with a clock speed of up to 2,133MHz. If it's all to be believed, then we have one word of advice to the overclocking community -- best start stocking up on liquid nitrogen.

NVIDIA reveals GeForce GTX 700M series GPUs for notebooks -- we go eyes-on

We've already seen a couple of new desktop GTX cards from NVIDIA this month, and if the mysterious spec sheet for MSI's GT70 Dragon Edition 2 laptop wasn't enough of a hint, the company's got some notebook variants to let loose, too. The GeForce GTX 700M series, officially announced today, is a quartet of chips built on the Kepler architecture. At the top of the stack is the GTX 780M, which NVIDIA claims is the "world's fastest notebook GPU," taking the title from AMD's Radeon HD 8970M. For fans of the hard numbers, the 780M has 1,536 CUDA cores, an 823MHz base clock speed and memory configs of up to 4GB of 256-bit GDDR5 -- in other words, not a world apart from a desktop card. Whereas the 780M's clear focus is performance, trade-offs for portability and affordability are made as you go down through the 770M, 765M and 760M. Nevertheless, the 760M is said to be 30 percent faster than its predecessor, and the 770M 55 percent faster.

All of the chips feature NVIDIA's GPU Boost 2.0 and Optimus technologies, and work with the GeForce Experience game auto-settings utility. The 700M series should start showing up in a host of laptops soon, and a bunch of OEMs have already pledged their allegiance. Check out a video with NVIDIA's Mark Avermann after the break, where he shows off a range of laptops packing 700M GPUs, and helps us answer the most important question of all: can it run Crysis? If you've navigated through the endless sea of 3D printers at this weekend's Maker Faire, you may well have caught a glimpse of the Series 1 Pro, the latest offering from San Francisco-based Type A Machines. The printer, which is still in the "engineering concept" phase, trades its predecessor's wood frame for a more solid aluminum version. The WiFi-compatible device has a build volume of about 18 liters, according to the company, and will be available in the third quarter of this year. That's the printer up top, pictured alongside Mark II, a little robot printed on the original Series One. Down below, you'll find a short press release.

'EVE Online' Player Stories Will Turn Into TV Series

Eve-onlineBrian Anthony Hernandez2013-04-28 20:38:49 UTC

Icelandic video game developer CCP Games plans to bring the science-fiction universe of EVE Online, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game, to television using stories written by some of the game's more than 500,000 subscribers.

CCP Games announced the news on Eve Online's Facebook page in a post saying the TV series will be "Based on a true story, 20,000 years into the future."

CCP Games will create the TV series with director Baltasar Kormákur, whose 2012 film The Deep was Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

"The EVE universe is full of astounding stories of epic battles, daring heists, and gripping political intrigue, all of which will make for an amazing television series," Kormákur said in a statement this weekend.

Eve Online players interested in submitting a story for possible inclusion in the TV series are encouraged to vist TrueStories.EVEonline.com, which describes the crowdsourced project as such:

The decade of history of EVE Online is unique. It has its heroes, scoundrels, heists and intrigue. Unlike other games, those are not stories written by developers and acted out by NPCs. They are true stories about the actions of the players that inhabit this world. Help us capture these true stories and vote for the best submissions! The result of this effort becomes an archive for all to learn about what really happened during the first decade in New Eden. Those true stories will inspire books, comics, TV series or films set in the EVE Universe.

Eve Online reaches its 10-year anniversary in May. EVE Online's 19th expansion, Odyssey, arrives June 4.

"The inhabitants of the notorious and beloved EVE universe have 10 years’ worth of dramatic stories to tell," CCP Games CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson said in a statement. "Our close collaboration with Baltasar and his creative team gives me confidence that we will capture EVE’s essence, inspiring millions of TV viewers with visions of humanity’s future."

'Game of Thrones' Facebook Game Will Follow HBO Series

If you're still trying to get over Sunday night's premiere of HBO's Game of Thrones, and suffering from Westeros withdrawal, you can get your fix in Game of Thrones Ascent on Facebook.

Game of Thrones Ascent, released in beta on Facebook in February, is going to start releasing new content each Monday that pairs with episode of Game of Thrones shown the night before. As season 3 gets underway, players will be able to play along as the events unfold in the show.

On Monday, Disruptor Beam, the team behind the game, released the first content update "Episode 1: Valar Dohaeris", which allows players to access content from that episode as well as the end of Season 2. Players can even take part in Season 2's Battle of Blackwater Bay.

Game of Thrones Ascent is a story-focused Facebook game where players create their own character in the fictional Westeros, then rise to power and align themselves with one of the major houses of Game of Thrones. (Disruptor Beam said 43% of players have aligned themselves with House Stark, one of the main protagonists in the story.) Players then train troops, trade goods, develop their lands and take part in political intrigue.

Facebook's social graph is a key feature of the game, where players can form alliances — or backstab — their real-life friends, but Disruptor Beam founder Jon Radoff said he didn't want a game where you just spammed your friends.

As such, Game of Thrones Ascent will be coming to other platforms where players can interact with the same game but without Facebook involved. While Radoff wouldn't confirm which directly, job postings on the Disruptor Beam website imply that an iOS iteration is in the game's future.

The third season of Game of Thrones started Sunday night on HBO, and will run for 10 episodes.

Have you played Game of Thrones Ascent on Facebook? Tell us what you think in the comments.
