Sony announced its FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD Media Player a few months ago, and today confirmed it's arriving in homes and on store shelves by July 15th. The $699 box only works with Sony's own 4K TVs, and early adopting owners of "qualifying" X900A sets can expect a $200 introductory discount. Also available is in-home setup and activations free of charge, set up through the 4KActivation.com site once it's available July 8th. Sony's also named the online 4K movie distribution network it's launching this fall -- Video Unlimited 4K -- which will offer films, TV episodes and short-form content for download. For feature films, it will cost $7.99 for a 24-hour rental or $29.99 to purchase. The 4K Player (and its 10 pack-in movies) is available for pre-order now on the US Sony store, expect it to hit other retailers soon.

LG Blu-ray player

Free LG Blu-ray player with purchase of LG Cinema 3D HDTV

Price: $759.58-$1,999.99
Buy: Amazon

This deal throws in a free mid-range $116 LG Blu-ray player when you buy a 3D HDTV buy of the same brand. Eligible TVs range from a $759.58 47-inch model to a $1,999 60-inch set. While gdgt hasn't seen any professional evaluations of the TVs, they have garnered 4-star-and-up Amazon reviews. The free Blu-ray player naturally handles 3D, as well as 2D discs, and wirelessly sends audio to your smartphone so you can listen to your cinematic explosions without bugging others.

Lenovo IdeaTab A2107

Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 7-inch, 8GB Tablet

Price: $99.99 (Next best price: $119)
Buy: Office Depot

You could toss a pair of earbuds in any electronics store and hit a tablet with more impressive specs, but at a price this low the value in the little tab is tough to question. While it won't bowl you over with raw power, the Android 4.0 OS and 720p video will do the job just fine, especially at 7 inches. Think of the A2107 as a cheap decoy to load up with a bunch of different Angry Birds titles and toss to your kids to keep their grubby hands off your iPad.

Wii U Gaming Essentials Kit

PowerA Wii U Gaming Essentials Kit

Price: $5.99 (MSPR, $34.99)
Buy: Best Buy

Amid the hoopla over the upcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4, it's easy to overlook Nintendo's latest console, which earned a solid 81 gdgt score and continues to chug along in the battle to win gamers' hearts and minds. The Wii U Gaming Essentials Kit gives you some essential gear to make the Mario magnet feel at home in your living room, coming with a pair of replacement styluses for the tablet-like GamePad, screen cleaner, a case that doubles as a stand and a GamePad skin. The set comes at a steep discount from the $34.99 MSRP, as well as the $27 price we've seen at most other sites.

Samsung Galaxy S4

$50 Best Buy gift card with Samsung Galaxy phone purchase

Price: $0-$399.99 with two-year contract
Buy: Best Buy

Best Buy wants to put a Samsung Galaxy phone in your pocket or belt-holster so badly that it's willing to bribe you with a Ulysses S. Grant in gift card form. Included in the offer are a number of devices that earned stellar gdgt scores, including the current flagship, the $199.99 S4 and the year-old but still very much kicking $49.99 S3, both which earned 92 gdgt scores. AT&T, Verizon and Sprint are among carriers supported. Intriguingly, the lower-emd Samsung Stratosphere Galaxy II, which is free on contract, also qualifies for the gift card offer.

The Godfather Blu-ray

The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration Blu-ray

Price: $24.99 (MSRP $57.99)
Buy: Amazon

While you have to deal with a stinker of a third wheel known as The Godfather Part III in this set, Francis Ford Coppola's two undisputed masterpieces are well worth the $25 discounted asking price. You get the three mobster dramas in shimmering HD in the form of restored transfers, a slew of background featurettes, commentaries and background docs. If you're looking for the set in DVD form you can snag it for $24.57.

Watch a Hot Hockey Player Lose His Beard on Vine

In the month before this week's Stanley Cup Finals, NHL players started growing out their notorious "Playoff Beards." It's tradition. But on Tuesday morning, after one team skated off the ice victorious (the Chicago Blackhawks), many men woke up with a new item on their to-do list: shaving.

Alas, the season was over; it was time to let the scruff go. And while his own team lost, Boston Bruins' defenseman Andrew Ference still won, big-time — with his spectacular use of Vine to showcase the removal of said playoff beard. In the six-second video, Ference made use of some rubber-eraser trickery and one fantastic sneeze. The best part is at the end, when he revealed some chiseled jawline handsomeness. Till next year ...

Sony puts micro ads on Wimbledon player, ushers in an era of 4K marketing

Sony serves up world-first campaign at Wimbledon

The British public will need to take a closer look at Anne Keothavong during this year's Wimbledon Championship - as the tennis star is sporting micro-sized advertisements.

Sony has launched an unusual campaign to place microtising, the word being a hybrid of microscopic and advertising, on Keothavong in a bid to highlight how every detail matters at this year's Wimbledon.

For the first time ever, parts of The Championships will be shot and recorded in 4k Ultra HD –a cutting edge technology that provides footage with four times greater resolution than that of standard HD – meaning even the smallest detail will stand out. Sony's two flagship 4k models – the 55X9 BRAVIA and 65X9 BRAVIA – launch in-store today.

Anne Keothavong will be sporting the microscopic adverts on her fingernails, hem of her skirt, shoelaces and sporting equipment.

The tennis star, currently ranked as number five within the UK, sees the funny side of the campaign: "This is a real laugh, I've got a lot of friends and family paying attention to the smallest detail – I've had it on my shoe laces, my index finger and the hem of my skirt, but there are a few hidden places no one has noticed yet."

Paul Gyles, Marketing Head of Sony Televisions commented: "With more footage being generated in 4k people are going to see every single detail and get much closer to the action. We thought we'd push it to the limit by running a microtising campaign – proving that Sony televisions can pick up on the smallest details."

"4k Ultra HD is a fairly new technology, and with two new television models available in-store from today it is going to become more commonplace. Marketing campaigns such as this could become a regular occurrence as the market penetration for 4k continues to increase."

Sony has two of its highly popular 4k cameras capturing the action at Wimbledon – the F55 35mm 4k camera and an NEX-FS700.

The microtising campaign will run for the duration of Anne Keothavong's involvement at Wimbledon, with the potential of it being replicated at future sporting events to be filmed in 4k.

Mick Desmond, Commercial Director of the All England Lawn Tennis Club said: "The Championships may be the oldest tennis tournament in the world, but that doesn't mean we're behind the times as proven by the cutting edge 4k Ultra HD partnership we're running in conjunction with Sony this year. We're very proud to be the first tennis tournament – and indeed one of the first major sporting events globally – to embrace this new technology."

The new 55X9 4k Ultra HD BRAVIA and 65X9 4k Ultra HD BRAVIA featuring 4k X-Reality PRO, Magnetic Fluid speakers and Triluminos display are available in-store today. Find out more at local Sony Centres or sony.co.uk

Social media streamer Rdio rolled out a major redesign a little over a year ago and has done a bit of tweaking since then. Now, following a recent update to its mobile apps, the service is making even more changes. At the top of the list are methods for getting social on the site, with friends from Twitter and Facebook hitting its front page, alongside their listening habits and influencers selected by the service. You can also check out a curated list of potential friends, if the front page just isn't doing it for you. Autoplay, meanwhile, creates personalized stations and keeps the music going after you're out of ideas, or you can proactively create stations by clicking on album artwork. Also new is a thumbs up / thumbs down voting feature and a full-size player featuring big album artwork and upcoming tracks.

WNBA Player Puts on Astonishing Shooting Show

Sam-laird By Sam Laird2013-05-11 18:27:10 -0600

Even LeBron James and Kobe Bryant probably can't match this. Watch a former women's college-basketball player sink 132 out of 135 three-pointers in just five minutes.

Her name is Laurie Koehn, and she played for Kansas State back in the early 2000s before going on to the WNBA's Atlanta Dream. In this clip, she's back at her alma mater, which uploaded the video to its official YouTube channel on Wednesday. Koehn's machine-like efficiency has proved a hit with sports fans online, earning the clip more than 330,000 views since.

Could Koehn outshoot most NBA stars? Check the video, above; then let us know what you think in the comments.

Vudu Player finally allows movie downloads on iPhone, iPad

Coming months after the feature's introduction on Android and PCs, Vudu has updated the iOS version of its app with the ability to download movies for viewing offline. Unlike the Android version, this feature is not restricted to tablets however, with downloads of your Vudu / Ultraviolet collection on iPads and iPhones. Other tweaks include making the Player "easier to use" and adding closed captions on iPhone. The Flixster app already allowed for Ultraviolet movie downloads on iOS, however Vudu has access to some movies that may not be available there. The updated version of the free app is available on on iTunes, although you will need an associated account (with updated password info) with unlocked videos to get any use out of it.

Amazon Cloud Player Launches PC App

Amazon-cloud-player-pc-rotated Lauren-indvik By Lauren Indvik2013-05-13 20:22:13 UTC

As part of its mission to bring its music service "everywhere," Amazon announced the release of a dedicated Cloud Player app for desktop PCs Monday. The release comes less than a week after Amazon announced iOS compatibility with Ford Sync-enabled vehicles.

PC users could already access Cloud Player through their web browsers, but the primary benefit of the PC application is the ability to store music offline. Users can also scan their hard drives for music files that haven't yet been uploaded to their storage locker.

Cloud Player allows users to stream music files they've purchased from Amazon or uploaded to to a cloud-based storage locker. An unlimited number of Amazon songs, plus 250 songs purchased outside of Amazon, can be uploaded to the cloud and streamed wirelessly using one of Amazon's players for free. First launched on Android two years ago, the service is also available on iOS, Mac, Sonos, Roku and (as mentioned) Ford Sync vehicles.

Update: An earlier version of this article said the app was released Thursday. It was released Monday. The story was also corrected to reflect that 250 songs purchased outside of Amazon, rather than 5 megabytes worth of songs purchased outside of Amazon, can be stored in Amazon's cloud locker.

Googlebuilt media streamer hits the FCC, reveals only a Hitchhiker's Guide reference

With much of its information obscured it's hard to say what Google has planned for this new device revealed by its FCC filing, but the model number at least indicates someone has a sense of humor. Called an "H840 device" and rocking the model number H2G2-42 (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - 42, the ultimate answer to the question of life, the universe and everything) it has WiFi of the 802.11 b/g/n varieties, but that's all we know for sure. The natural question is whether this is a proper revamp of / follow up to the failed Nexus Q project, particularly with its appearance coming so closely after the unveiling of its Google Play Music All Access subscription. Of course, Google has no shortage of mysterious device projects in store, we're hopeful this one will reveal all of its secrets soon.

'EVE Online' Player Stories Will Turn Into TV Series

Eve-onlineBrian Anthony Hernandez2013-04-28 20:38:49 UTC

Icelandic video game developer CCP Games plans to bring the science-fiction universe of EVE Online, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game, to television using stories written by some of the game's more than 500,000 subscribers.

CCP Games announced the news on Eve Online's Facebook page in a post saying the TV series will be "Based on a true story, 20,000 years into the future."

CCP Games will create the TV series with director Baltasar Kormákur, whose 2012 film The Deep was Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

"The EVE universe is full of astounding stories of epic battles, daring heists, and gripping political intrigue, all of which will make for an amazing television series," Kormákur said in a statement this weekend.

Eve Online players interested in submitting a story for possible inclusion in the TV series are encouraged to vist TrueStories.EVEonline.com, which describes the crowdsourced project as such:

The decade of history of EVE Online is unique. It has its heroes, scoundrels, heists and intrigue. Unlike other games, those are not stories written by developers and acted out by NPCs. They are true stories about the actions of the players that inhabit this world. Help us capture these true stories and vote for the best submissions! The result of this effort becomes an archive for all to learn about what really happened during the first decade in New Eden. Those true stories will inspire books, comics, TV series or films set in the EVE Universe.

Eve Online reaches its 10-year anniversary in May. EVE Online's 19th expansion, Odyssey, arrives June 4.

"The inhabitants of the notorious and beloved EVE universe have 10 years’ worth of dramatic stories to tell," CCP Games CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson said in a statement. "Our close collaboration with Baltasar and his creative team gives me confidence that we will capture EVE’s essence, inspiring millions of TV viewers with visions of humanity’s future."

NFL Player Tweets Worldly Retirement Photo

FujitagettySam Laird2013-04-23 21:18:36 UTC

Scott Fujita is a winner. He attended UC Berkeley, played 11 NFL seasons and won a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints in 2010.

So it's no real surprise Fujita announced his retirement from pro football in just about the most boss, worldly way possible: by sharing a photo of himself signing the paperwork from atop Machu Picchu. The Saints head of communications tweeted this pic on Monday:

Fujita then followed that up with a philosophical Twitter photo of his own from the historic Incan ruins in southern Peru:

So it looks like the 33-year-old Fujita is going to adjust to retirement just fine.

The fellow he's standing with in that second photo, by the way, is former Saints teammate Steve Gleason. Gleason now uses a wheelchair after a long battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease. Gleason also uses eye-monitoring technology to write inspirational tweets and messages to his social media followers, and you can read up on his powerful full story here.

Bud Light Surprises NBA Player with 1,100 Cases of Beer

Sam Laird2013-04-23 05:01:15 UTC

During the Miami Heat's incredible 27-game winning streak earlier this season, forward Shane Battier told NBA.com that he's a superstitious fellow. As the Heat won game after game, Battier said he was sticking to one beer to keep the streak's mojo intact. That beer? Bud Light.

Now, nearly a month later, Bud Light has paid Battier back for the love. How? A surprise delivery of some 1,100 cases of the goes-down-easy brew. The special drop-off is documented in the YouTube video, above, which we recommend checking out. Whether you're a fan of mass-produced light beer or are a craft-brew snob, there's one thing we can all agree on: Having 1,100 cases of beer laying around is never a bad thing.
