Yahoo acquires video sharing startup Qwiki

If you thought Marissa Mayer was done snatching up companies and was ready to turn her focus internally, you were wrong. Clearly the CEO sees no reason why the company can't handle both simultaneously. So, while the forgotten brands are shuttered and the merely struggling ones given fresh coats of paint, new products are joining the Yahoo family. The latest addition is bouncing baby iOS app called Qwiki: a standout from TechCrunch Disrupt 2010, at which Mayer was a judge. The startup combines Vine-like social video sharing with Zoe-esque filters, photo transitions and soundtracks to create "stories." After you've collected and edit your material, you can post your Qwiki (apparently the creators have a slightly sophomoric sense of humor) for others to see. Obviously the purchase is meant to keep Yahoo competitive with Facebook and Twitter, which have their own respective video sharing platforms. If you mosey on past the break you'll find a pleasant little celebratory video from the latest startup to sell out.

Update: Unfortunately it appears that Qwiki's servers are a little overwhelmed right now. We'll add the video back when the service comes back online.

Update 2: And, the story of Qwiki and Yahoo is back online for your viewing pleasure.

Dropbox's latest update for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch solves some of the minor niggles we've had with its iOS version. You can now share links to folders direct from the app, while the refresh also adds the ability select and share multiple files at once. Alongside the obligatory bug fixes and performance improvements, Dropbox version 2.3 also throws in a handful of new touchscreen-friendly gestures to the mix, allowing the user to share, move, delete or tag favorite files with a swipe. The update's started to roll out to our iOS devices, or you can jump the queue at the source link below.

Snapjoy photo sharing service shut down following Dropbox aquisition

Snapjoy has announced that it'll be shuttering all of its services a mere six months after being acquired by cloud colossus Dropbox. In a blog post, the company said photos can no longer be imported into Snapjoy and the iPhone app is henceforth unavailable. If you've got images stored on the site, you'll have exactly a month to get them downloaded, since after July 24th, "all photos and data will be permanently deleted." The same thing happened to Audiogalaxy shortly after its acquisition by Dropbox, and of course other big fish like Google and Twitter are well known for similar behavior after eating smaller fish -- though at least we saw the #Music fruits of Twitter's buyout shortly after it happened. On the other hand, we've yet to see Dropbox do anything with Audiogalaxy, so we hope the defunct apps will be resurrected in some form soon.

Vine on Android

Twitter isn't about to let Video on Instagram go completely unanswered -- it just posted an update to Vine for Android that could offer a few reasons to stay with the earlier service. Short-form movie makers on Android now have more of the features we've seen on iOS, including Facebook sharing as well as searches for hashtags and users. The release also smooths out the rough experience that has characterized the Android experience since launch, boosting both capture speeds and the final video quality. The app may still fall short of the newer Instagram release in a few areas, but those who prefer Vine's approach can grab its refresh at Google Play.

Nintendo 3DS image sharing comes to the US through Animal Crossing New Leaf

Now that Animal Crossing: New Leaf has launched in the US, so too has a Nintendo 3DS feature: public image sharing. American gamers who want to prove their mayoral skills can now snap a screenshot and visit a special website to post their images to Tumblr, Twitter or both. The picture sharing has limited usefulness when New Leaf is the only supporting title in the country, but it still marks a welcome (if tentative) step for Nintendo into a more social world.

Twitter for Mac Update Improves Photo Sharing, Adds Retina Support

Twitter-sharingEmily Price2013-04-25 19:06:40 UTC

Twitter issued an update on Thursday for Twitter for Mac for the first time since 2011, bringing a number of improvements to the Mac version of the app.

Most notably, the update improves photo sharing. Now to add a photo to a tweet, you can simply click on the camera icon in the lower-left corner of the box where you’re composing your tweet, and add a photo from your computer. An operation that works much like the experience on Twitter's mobile apps.

If you miss the drag-and-drop functionality, you can also still add photos that way from your desktop as well.

In addition to the photo improvements, Twitter also added Retina display support to the Mac application, and support for 14 more languages: Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, and Turkish.

The updated version of Twitter for Mac is available now from the Mac App Store.
