Google Glass update widens voice commands, adds web viewing

Google has delivered a steady stream of Glass updates since the Explorer Edition launched, but its new July upgrade may be the biggest yet -- it addresses several of our earliest gripes. Wearers can now answer phone calls or have messages read aloud. It's also now possible to call or message any Gmail contact, not just the top ten. Oh, and that hidden web browser? It's now public: Glass owners can ask to see a favorite page and navigate using the touchpad. If you're one of the precious few to sport Google's eyewear, you should automatically receive the much-improved firmware in the next few days; we've already heard of at least one user getting the upgrade today.

Update: We now have screenshots of how browsing works in the update -- check them out below. Google Glass July 2013 update See all photos 7 Photos

Sony's Google TV box gets a refresh, NSZGS8 adds voice search ready remote

Sony has just announced a new Google TV set-top box, the NSZ-GS8. Apparently replacing last year's NSZ-GS7 that lead the charge of second generation ARM-powered Google TV hardware, this one appears to be quite similar. As seen in the picture above (check after the break to see the old remote for comparison) it adds a microphone this time around, necessary to enable the voice search features added to the Google TV platform last fall. We're not seeing any other changes, but we'll let you know if we hear of any differences. In lieu of actual new devices, Google TV fans can at least take heart that Sony is continuing development on the platform -- good to hear after the NSZ-GP9 Blu-ray player that was also announced last year ended up being cancelled prior to its release. Like its predecessor, the NSZ-GS8 carries a sticker price of $199 and should reach stores by early July.

Hangouts upgrade disables outbound Google Voice calls in desktop Gmail, company promises it will return 'soon'

Anyone who's tried out the new Hangouts feature in Gmail in place of the traditional Google Talk option got a bit of surprise when they went to make an outbound call from their computer. That feature gets disabled when the new Hangouts replacement is switched on, leaving folks looking to make calls with no other option than to revert to the old Google Talk in Gmail or seek out another alternative. That's apparently just a temporary change, though, as Google's Nikhyl Singhal has now confirmed that both outbound and inbound calls will "soon be available." Unfortunately, he's not getting any more specific than that for the time being. He did, however, reiterate that "Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice," and that "making/receiving phone calls is just the beginning," further adding that "future versions of Hangouts will integrate Google Voice more seamlessly."

GifBoom Update Adds Voice and Music to Your GIFs

Getty-image-smartphone-camerafor AppAdvice 2013-04-28 21:30:32 UTC

The jury may still be out on whether GIF is pronounced with a hard G or a soft G. But here's one thing that's certain: the popular GIF-sharing app GifBoom has just gotten its biggest update yet.

What exactly makes this update the biggest yet for GifBoom? For starters, you can now add voice and music backgrounds to your GIFs. A new step in the GIF-posting process has been added, and this lets you choose between recording your voice or selecting some music to attach to your GIF. If you choose to do the former, you just have to press and hold a button to record your voice and let others hear what you have to say. And if you choose to do the latter, you just need to tap a different button to search GifBoom's database of popular song snippets and select one to go with your GIF.

What's more, GIFs and audio can also be sent together in private messages.

Another notable addition in the new version of GifBoom is the ability to make GIF collages. Just select Collage in the app's new post menu to start combining your GIFs, photos and texts within any of the provided collage frames.

Speaking of the app's new post menu, it looks a lot like the Tumblr iOS app's post menu. In fact, the overall interface of GifBoom looks a lot like Instagram's. And this is just unfortunate, in my view. I like that GifBoom has a familiar interface that's easy to use for even the newest of users. But I don't like that it's way too familiar.

The latest update to GifBoom also brings optimizations for text GIFs and introduces a new set of algorithms that enables you to discover interesting users and newcomers.

Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 5.0 or later, the newly updated GifBoom is available in the App Store for free.
