EU officially caps roaming charges across Europe, makes data 36 percent cheaper and teases further cuts

Starting today, anyone hopping between EU member countries with their smartphone will see roaming charge caps substantially cut across networks and services. As promised by the EU Commission's VP Neelie Kroes last week, new price caps will drop call charges by "at least 17 percent," while receiving calls are reduced by 12 percent per minute starting today. Text message costs are down 11 percent, while (perhaps most importantly) data charges across networks in Europe have been cut by 36 percent, down to 45 Euro cents per MB -- 91 percent cheaper than they were in 2007.

The commission says it has managed achieve price reductions of over 80 percent across mobile services in the last six years, but it isn't done there. Further price caps are promised for the same time next year too, as you can see after the break, with roaming data charges set to be further halved (down to 20 cents) by July 2014, with voice calls and text charges also seeing further, admittedly less substantial, reductions. Now, let's see how the EU fares on those ridding the old country of throttled data speeds.

EU officially caps roaming charges across Europe, makes data 36 percent cheaper and teases further cuts

Show full PR textNew lower price caps for mobile roaming from 1 July: data 36% cheaper; roaming in Croatia 15 times cheaper

From 1 July 2013, the European Union's Roaming Regulation will lower the price caps for data downloads by 36%, making it much cheaper to use maps, watch videos, check emails and update social networks while travelling across the EU. Data roaming will now be up to 91% cheaper in 2013 compared to 2007. During this period the volume of the data roaming market has grown 630%. These two trends mean both consumers and mobile operators have significant new opportunities thanks to EU efforts.

The EU has achieved retail price reductions across calls, SMS and data of over 80% since 2007.

Each year, Europeans make several million visits to Croatia, which joins the EU on 1 July. This year visitors to Croatia will enjoy spectacular savings as the cost for data decreases almost 15 times and sending a SMS or making a phone call elsewhere in the EU will be 10 times cheaper.

Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes said: "The EU has to be relevant to people's lives. The latest price cuts put more money in your pocket for summer, and are a critical step towards getting rid of these premiums once and for all. This is good for both consumers and companies, because it takes fear out of the market, and it grows the market.

The new prices caps, which enter into force on 1st July 2013, are:

Downloading data or browsing the Internet - 45 cents / Megabyte (MB) (charged per Kilobyte used) + VAT. (36% reduction compared to 2012)
Making calls - 24 cents / minute + VAT (17% reduction compared to 2012)
Receiving a call - 7 cents / minute + VAT (12.5% reduction compared to 2012)
Sending a text message - 8 cents + VAT (11% reduction compared to 2012)
Operators are free to offer cheaper rates, and some have already begun to remove roaming premiums altogether for voice and SMS, or offer a roaming-free area region across one section of Europe or another.

Samsung starts making first PCIe SSD for Ultrabooks

Solid-state drives are so speedy these days that that even a SATA interface might not have the bandwidth to cope. It's a good thing that Samsung has started mass-producing the first PCI Express-based SSDs for Ultrabooks, then. The new XP941 series uses PCIe's wider data path to read at nearly 1.4GB/s -- that's 2.5 times faster than the quickest SATA SSDs, and nimble enough to move 500GB in six minutes. It also ships in a tinier M.2 format that makes past card-based SSDs look gargantuan, even when there's up to 512GB of storage. Samsung hasn't named laptop makers receiving the XP941, although it doesn't take strong deductive skills to spot one of the (probable) first customers. When Apple is shipping a new 13-inch MacBook Air that just happens to use a very similar PCIe SSD from Samsung, there's likely more than coincidence at work.

Samsung Now Mass Producing Industry's First PCI-Express SSD for Ultra-slim Notebook PCs

SEOUL, Korea – June 17, 2013 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that it has begun mass producing the industry's first PCI-Express (PCIe) solid state drive (SSD) for next-generation ultra-slim notebook PCs.

"With the Samsung XP941, we have become the first to provide the highest performance PCIe SSD to global PC makers so that they can launch leading-edge ultra-slim notebook PCs this year," said Young-Hyun Jun, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics. "Samsung plans to continue timely delivery of the most advanced PCIe SSD solutions with higher density and performance, and support global IT companies providing an extremely robust computing environment to consumers."

Samsung started providing the new SSD to major notebook PC makers earlier this quarter. The XP941 lineup consists of 512, 256 and 128GB SSDs.

The new Samsung XP941 delivers a level of performance that easily surpasses the speed limit of a SATA 6Gb/s interface. Samsung XP941 enables a sequential read performance of 1,400MB/s (megabytes per second), which is the highest performance available with a PCIe 2.0 interface. This allows the drive to read 500GB of data or 100 HD movies as large as 5GB (gigabytes) in only six minutes, or 10 HD movies at 5GB in 36 seconds. That is approximately seven times faster than a hard disk drive (which would need over 40 minutes for the same task), and more than 2.5 times faster than the fastest SATA SSD.

By mass producing the new PCIe SSD, Samsung has established the groundwork for a significant transition into the new paradigm in the global SSD market which enables increasing the performance and the memory storage capacity of SSDs at the same time.

The XP941 comes in the new M.2 form factor (80mm x 22mm), weighing approximately six grams – about a ninth of the 54 grams of a SATA-based 2.5 inch SSD. Also, the XP941's volume is about a seventh of that of a 2.5 inch SSD, freeing up more space for the notebook's battery and therein providing the opportunity for increased mobility that will enhance user convenience.

Samsung intends to continuously expand its production volumes of high-performance 10-nanometer class* NAND flash memory, in helping the company to maintain its lead in PCIe SSDs for ultra-slim PCs and notebook PCs. Furthermore, Samsung plans to introduce next-generation enterprise NVMe SSDs in a timely manner to also take the lead in that high-density SSD market, adding to its competitive edge.

Pussy Riot Makes First U.S. Appearance

Two members of Russian feminist collective and punk band Pussy Riot doffed their balaclavas to speak with a group of activists at Lower East Side bookstore Bluestockings this week. The women made their first-ever visit to the U.S. in order to promote the June 10 HBO documentary Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer — very quietly. According to the Guardian, the appearance was unannounced, and the 50 or so attendees were asked to keep news of the band’s arrival off the Internet — “all security measures, they said, to avoid the Russian security services that imprisoned their bandmates and continue to target them.” (The Guardian also adhered to a 48-hour embargo and did not photograph the women unmasked.) The women, who went by the pseudonyms Fara and Shaiba, also met with Occupy activists last week, in order to “have a dialogue” with the existing networks that have rallied around Pussy Riot.

Netflix Makes iOS Binge-Viewers Happy With New Update

Netflix-televisionCmac By Christina Warren2013-05-09 17:32:25 UTC

Netflix has added its slick post-play feature to its iOS apps.

The feature was originally introduced last August for the web player, PS3 and Xbox 360 and it allows users to watch more content automatically without having to tinker with the remote or user interface.

When watching a TV show, the next episode automatically cues up and will start as soon as the current episode ends. This is awesome when binge watching episodes of your favorite series — or of a newly discovered favorite.

For movies, users get a choice of three movie recommendations that can be selected for easy, fast playback. Movies don't start automatically, so you don't have to worry abut getting sucked into something you don't want to watch.

We can't help but think that the roll out of post-play is tied indirectly with the upcoming fourth season of Arrested Development. That's a show plenty of fans (myself included) are sure to binge-watch in quick succession.

Netflix isn't the only company that is dabbling with the idea of continuous watching. Hulu Plus has had a continuous watch feature in place for quite some time across its apps.

While Netflix hasn't updated the Apple TV to support post-play, we hope it's just around the corner. To get post-play for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, update your Netflix app [iTunes link] or download it from the App Store.

Do you binge watch TV shows on Netflix? Let us know in the comments.

University of Glasgow creates 3D with singlepixel sensors, skips the cameras video

Most approaches to capturing 3D models of real-world objects involve multiple cameras that are rarely cheap, and are sometimes tricky to calibrate. The University of Glasgow has developed a method that ditches those cameras altogether. Its system has four single-pixel sensors stitching together a 3D image based on the reflected intensity of light patterns cast by a projector. Reducing the pixel count lowers the cost per sensor to just a few dollars, and extends the sensitivity as far as terahertz wavelengths. Real-world products are still a long way off, but the university sees its invention as useful for cancer detection and other noble pursuits. Us? We'd probably just waste it on creating uncanny facsimiles of ourselves.

Bad Lip Reading Makes 'Walking Dead' Even Weirder

Sam-laird By Sam Laird2013-05-03 21:07:42 UTC

With humans engaging in a mega-violent battle against flesh-eating zombies in a post-apocalyptic hell-scape, AMC's The Walking Dead could definitely be classified as weird. But it's not exactly what you'd call funny.

Dub in some ridiculous dialogue, however, and the show suddenly becomes both hilarious and more strange. YouTube channel Bad Lip Reading takes The Walking Dead from weird to weirder with a few tweaks to the show's audio.

It's understandably popular, with nearly 500,000 views since going online Thursday. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments.

Hyundai Ad Makes Light of Suicide, Ignites Internet Firestorm

Charlie White2013-04-25 18:47:13 UTC

What happens when you create a car advertisement depicting suicide? Hyundai tried that stunt in the UK last week, and by Thursday the Hyundai ad had certainly garnered plenty of attention, but not at all the kind of reaction the Korean car company had hoped for.

Blistering criticism is erupting from across the globe toward the Hyundai spot.

Blistering criticism is erupting from across the globe toward the Hyundai spot. The 60-second commercial, entitled "Pipe Job," depicts a man attempting to commit suicide by starting his Hyundai iX35 car inside an enclosed garage.

The intent of the ad was to tout the car's low emissions, as one of its main byproducts is harmless water. Many said via Twitter that the move was insult to everyone who has ever had to cope with loved ones committing or attempting suicide.

Particularly heartbreaking is this open letter to Hyundai and the ad agency that created it, Innocean. The letter was written by London advertising copywriter Holly Brockwell, which she posted on her blog, Copybot:

When your ad started to play, and I saw the beautifully-shot scenes of taped-up car windows with exhaust feeding in, I began to shake. I shook so hard that I had to put down my drink before I spilt it. And then I started to cry. I remembered looking out of the window to see the police and ambulance, wondering what was happening. I remember mum sitting me down to explain that daddy had gone to sleep and would not be waking up, and no, he wouldn't be able to take me to my friend’s birthday party next week. No, he couldn’t come back from heaven just for that day, but he would like to if he could. I remember finding out that he had died holding my sister’s soft toy rabbit in his lap.

Take a look at her blog for the full text of her poignant open letter, along with pictures of her father and his suicide note.

We've contacted Hyundai for comment, and while we wait for a response, here's the apology the company submitted on Thursday, in an attempt to quell the worldwide firestorm of criticism:

We understand that some people may have found the iX35 video offensive. We are very sorry if we have offended anyone. We have taken the video down and have no intention of using it in any of our advertising or marketing.

The misstep is a surprise for sophisticated advertiser Hyundai, which Mashable reported was one of the companies most committed to advertising on the Super Bowl. The company has bought ads on every Super Bowl for the past six years. However, we also noted that Hyundai's track record with its ads has been mixed.

Update: Hyundai America issued the following response to the UK Hyundai IX35 ad:

We at Hyundai Motor America are shocked and saddened by the depiction of a suicide attempt in an inappropriate UK video featuring a Hyundai. Suicide merits thoughtful discussion, not this type of treatment.

Update 2: The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention sent us this statement:

"We know from research that graphic depictions of suicide in the media can inadvertently lead to further suicides, a phenomenon known as contagion," said Robert Gebbia, executive director for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. "This advertisement was particularly graphic and potentially dangerous. We are pleased that Hyundai has decided to pull this campaign. That said, we hope that advertisers and companies realize that suicide is a worldwide health problem that claims more than 1 million lives each year, taking an enormous toll on family, friends, co-workers and entire communities and it should not be used to sell products."

This is not the first time a car company has tried to make light of suicide to sell its products. French car manufacturer Citroƫn had a similar ad a few years ago.

Let us know in the comments what you think of Hyundai's crude attempt at dark comedy.

Syfy's 'Robot Combat League' Makes Major Tech Dream Come True

Robot-combat-league-alternate-thumbnailBrian Anthony Hernandez2013-04-24 00:50:39 UTC

Robot Combat League, Syfy's new reality series pitting 12 expensive, 8-feet-tall humanoid machines against each other in tournament-style face-offs, ends Tuesday night with the final two robots. And while this season lasted only three months, it has been years in the making.

"I really couldn't believe how technologically advacnced they were," Chris Jericho, the show's host and popular WWE wrestler, told Mashable. "It's like being attacked by a Terminator. If you got hit by one of these things it would literally cave your head in."

"We've never seen this before in the history of anything."

"We've never seen this before in the history of anything."

Steampunk and Crash (see image above) will battle for the show's championship in Tuesday's finale battle at 10 p.m. ET.

Throughout the tournament, teams of two humans piloted the robots: a fighter ("robo-jockey") and a robotics engineer ("robo-tech"). Fighters had varying backgrounds, including completing in the Olympics, battling as mixed martial artists and even being the daughter of filmmaker George Lucas. They used exo-suits to power their robots' movements. The engineers had experience in tech or science; one helped build NASA's Mars Curiosity Rover.

Father-daughter team Amber and Dave Shinsel, who both work at Intel, are operating finalist Crash. Kyle Samuelson, the show's youngest robo-tech and an afterschool robotics instructor, is manning Steampunk along with former beauty queen Ashley Mary Nunes.

Mark Setrakian has come along since playing with Legos, taking toys apart and putting them back together. As a boy, he drew inspiration from movies. Flash forward to adulthood and he eventually became part of the film industry that nudged him toward a career in robotics. His dreams came true and now he's turning other people's fantasies into reality.

"We're finally realizing a dream that people have had for a long time — humanoid robots fighting," Setrakian told Mashable. "My background is basically building high-tech puppets."

Setrakian built animatronics for Hellboy, Men in Black and The Grinch. He paired what he learned working on those movies with knowledge gained building robots on such TV shows as Robot Wars to the amplified "next level" as the robot creator on Robot Combat League.

"This is the most challenging project I've ever worked on."

"This is the most challenging project I've ever worked on."

"This has basically taken everything that I learned [in engineering and biology]," Setrakian added. "I've had the time of my life on this project. Shooting it in five weeks was challenging because we had to keep the robots functional throughout the series. And after each taping we had to do that over and over again."

The robots cost roughly $200,000 each, but he admits "it's hard to put a price on the robots because each one is kind of like a custom car and you keep adding all that stuff up."

Setrakian and his team were uncompromising when constructing the 12 robots.

"I made sure that everything I wanted to put in those machines got put in there for the season," he said. "But for next season, I'd like the robots to have more head movement."

Past episodes of Robot Combat League are posted on Syfy.com. The premiere attracted 1.3 million viewers, making it the network's top unscripted series premiere in two years.

"The show definitely fills a hole in the market," Syfy President Mark Stern told Mashable. "It really does break open a whole new genre, which is giant fighting robots."

World's Oldest Spacewalker Makes History at 59

Pavel-vinogradovfor Space.com 2013-04-20 02:17:42 UTC

Russian cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov made spaceflight history high above Earth on Friday when, at age 59, he became the oldest person ever to venture outside a spacecraft during a spacewalk.

Vinogradov, a veteran cosmonaut, took the seventh cosmic excursion in 16 years during Friday's spacewalk. He donned a bulky spacesuit and left the confines of the International Space Station just after 10 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT) to upgrade the orbiting lab with new experiments.

Vinogradov paired up with 41-year-old fellow cosmonaut Roman Romanenko, a first-time spacewalker but second-generation cosmonaut. Romanenko's father, former cosmonaut Yuri Romanenko, logged more than 10 spacewalking hours in his career.

The spacewalkers were at times lighthearted during the more-than-six-hour job.

"Nobody took a photo of me," Romanenko jokingly protested aftering they used a camera to take pictures outside the lab. "How can it be like that? Please take a photo of me, Pavel."

Vinogradov and Romanenko's primary objective was to install a new Russian experiment called Obstanovka, which will measure charged particles interact with a variety of materials kept outside of the space station. Obstanovka could offer scientists new insights about how space weather affects the ionosphere, an active region of the Earth's atmosphere, NASA officials explained in a spacewalk description.

The pair also retrieved a Biorisk canister, an experiment that measures the effects of bacteria and fungus on spacecraft materials, and prepared the outpost for the arrival of a robotic cargo ship later this year.

The spacewalkers are two members of the six-man Expedition 35 crew currently living aboard the International Space Station. The others are Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, Russian cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin, and NASA astronauts Thomas Marshburn and Chris Cassidy.

This is the 167th spacewalk dedicated to the construction and upkeep of the International Space Station, which was built by five different space agencies representing 15 countries. Construction of the $100 billion space station began in 1998, and it has been permanently staffed with rotating crews since 2000. It is roughly the size of a five-bedroom house with a wingspan the size of a football field.

The Man Who Makes Animals Talk in All Caps

Cat-all-capsChona Kasinger2013-04-20 22:32:40 UTC

Chona Kasinger is a freelance photographer and writer based in Seattle. Her work has been featured in Rolling Stone, MTV Hive, Marie Claire and The Huffington Post. View her website at chonakasinger.com.

Animals Talking in All Caps is exactly what it sounds like: photos of animals paired with tongue-in-cheek dialogue. Capitalizing on the virality of Tumblr, Justin Valmassoi, runs ATIAC for its audience of well over 100,000 followers.

Occasionally relatable and always witty, ATIAC appeals to both animal lovers and Tumblr users in search of a hearty chuckle. Essentially more refined versions of the Lolcat meme, Valmassoi’s posts often mock societal norms. Sheer silliness and carefully curated photos has proved a winning combination, earning him both a small army of fans and book deal.

“People who were raised by wolves haven't seen half as many wolves as I have," Valmassoi says.

Despite the sheer magnitude of Kookaburras, Orangutans and Weimaraners he has captioned over the years, Valmassoi has never actually been to a zoo. Yet we find ourselves nestled away at the Woodland Park Zoo, in Seattle’s Phinney Ridge neighborhood, where we discuss hippopotamuses, Creative Commons and his upcoming book (Aug. 2013, Crown/Random House). And of course, we snapped photos in real time for ATIAC.

When did you first have the idea of pairing animal photos with
captions?

I guess the first one was in 2009, maybe? I think everyone with a Tumblr has captioned an animal at some point, though. It's just one of those things that happens when you're not paying attention. I made a few more over the next year or so, mostly to entertain my friend Stacey. When I moved to Seattle in 2011 I collected them all in one spot at her request, then made a few more because I didn't go out much, and that was the entirety of how ATIAC came about. Just a compilation of random half-jokes that snowballed into something much bigger. I certainly never intended to do it full-time. I was just really bored and about 2,500 miles away from all my friends.

What cues in animal photos do you read the most for dialogue?

I really like body language and facial expressions. There are a lot of amusing animal pictures on the Internet (obviously), but a ton of them are contrived or really blatantly weird. I prefer normal photos of normal animals pulling really human faces (exasperation, inebriation, contempt) or doing things with their bodies that imply non-traditional animal behavior (waving, pointing, acting sexy).

I'm not saying I've never used a ferret hugging a vibrator, but I prefer a couple of otters that look like they’re arguing or a praying mantis with a highly sassy stance.

From where do you pull animal images the most?

I get almost everything from Tumblr, either via submissions from readers or from wildlife/nature-themed blogs. I think Animals-Animals-Animals, rhamphoteca and getawildlife are my top three sources of images, mostly because they have a good eye for my kind of stuff, but also because they all do a very good job of linking to the photographers' websites.

MARTHA WANTED ME TO COME BY AND TELL YOU THE BARBECUE IS CANCELED.

What is your process of sourcing the images going into your book, and can you tell us a little bit about the implications of crediting photographers for their work?

That was the worst part of the whole thing, and a large part of why I like the aforementioned animal/nature blogs. I basically had to sit at my desk for, like, 11 hours a day every day for a couple of months and plug images into Google's image search, then sift through literally thousands of results trying to find the highest resolution or the largest image, in an attempt to trace it back to the source.

Contrary to popular opinion I am really shit at the Internet and I'd never had to do that before, so it was a long and kind of suicide-inducing learning process. Once I found the original I had to figure out the photographer's contact info, then email or call them, explain what I was doing and ask for permission. A ton of them were great and very excited; a few were mad that I had used their stuff on ATIAC without permission (which necessitated explaining just how many uncredited photos are floating around Tumblr, and how hard I had to work just to find their Flickr). And most of the people I tried to contact never got back to me, or had died, or at least forgot to update their info for a few years, so their pictures won't be in the book.

I also asked for submissions from readers who like to photograph things, and I got quite a few from that, which was nice — much easier than months of fruitless googling.

I think there's a definite sense of communal ownership that comes with the "digital age" ... everyone thinks that anything they find on the Internet half belongs to them.

I think there's a definite sense of communal ownership that comes with the "digital age" ... everyone thinks that anything they find on the Internet half belongs to them. But after talking to a couple hundred photographers, I can definitely tell you that's one profession who, collectively, would really like people to at least take five seconds to link to their work. It turns out that a couple of the people whose stuff will be in the ATIAC book have taken a ton of my favorite animal photos from the past couple years, and I had no idea who they were. I can see how that would be really, really frustrating: to find out that your work is really popular or at least well-liked and has been reblogged around Tumblr 62,385,689,432,658,314 times — and nobody knows it's yours.

What difficulties have you encountered in transitioning from ATIAC’s online medium to the published world?

I've lost 15 pounds and grown a beard. I think I have an ulcer. My hair is out of control and I think it makes the people at 7-Eleven a little afraid of me.

Other than that, just the usual "creative vs. accounts" stuff you always hear about. Inane as the premise of ATIAC may be, I still have an image of it in my head, and it maintains a certain artistic integrity. Once you're in the machine, though, all of that goes right out the window. Giving up creative control of something you've done, for you, for a very long time, is never easy, I don't think. For instance, I always wanted the cover to look like this:

To me that's a very funny seven-layer joke — people could read it on the train and nobody would make fun of them. But it will end up having an animal photo on the cover and probably a font that makes me want to throw bleach in my eyes. Because it has to appeal to the widest possible range of people (or some lie that people who like selling things tell themselves), so my dreams mean nothing and I probably won't like looking at my own book.

Also, just the reality of producing content on demand, under deadline, is a lot harder than most people realize. If I hadn't had to do all the permissions/photo hunting/organization, it probably wouldn't have been a problem, but doing all that while coming up with good captions, plus cranking them out for the Tumblr itself (I post quite regularly) at the same time ... well, look at my beard thing. Look at my skeleton body and horrible hair. I'm a wreck.

What can we expect to see in the ATIAC book?

Since the "It's just what it sounds like" tagline has been there from the get- go, I kept it pretty simple. It's basically just a coffee table version of the website, so if anyone was worried that it would have interactive 3D QR stuff or pop-up photos with holographic word balloons, you can rest easy. (If you were hoping it would have those things, I'm sorry.) It's about 50/50 old and new content. Some fan favorites, some personal favorites, some slightly reworked captions paired with new photos and a bunch of shiny new entries that will be ... whatever it is that I do, I guess. New pairings of mildly absurd or occasionally poignant text with very sexy images of expressive animals and insects.

What advice do you have for other creatives hoping to take their work from the web to the printing press?

Always ask for full creative control of the cover. Always!

Also, I guess it would help to think about all of the aspects of your work that function well because they're online, and then figure out if they translate to print media or will have a similar audience once it's a book. Some stuff will probably have to go. Some other things will need to be added. Print and digital are two totally different realms that don't necessarily overlap well, so it's important to have a pretty solid idea of what it will be when it's in someone's hand instead of on their screen.

Do you have any vision of ATIAC beyond a book? How do you see this project evolving?

To be honest, I just want a vacation. I can't even tell you how many animal photos I have seen in the past two years.

People who were raised by wolves haven't seen half as many wolves as I have.

People who were raised by wolves haven't seen half as many wolves as I have. I'm also kind of scatterbrained, and tend to have four or five things going at once. I'm a writer upon occasion (in lowercase, and without pictures) and I make 'zines a lot. I'd like to keep moving from project to project while my brain is angled toward each one. ATIAC is probably the longest I've spent immersed in one thing.

I also got married in April of 2012 to a beautiful, sarcastic Scottish woman (our wedding and visa application was actually partially funded by ATIAC reader donations last Christmas), so I'm trying very hard to move to Glasgow and start a proper life with her. That's the most pressing thing on my plate of pressing things right now. The whole book process has been done alongside the whole visa application process, which I'm sure is a huge contributing factor to my horrid stomach ailments and atrocious sleep schedule. So whatever I do next, I'm hoping to do it from the UK.

Who knows, though. I might just end up doing Animals Talking In All British Accents or something. I just kind of follow whatever weird path life happens to present me, which is how I ended up standing at the zoo with you today.

What is your spirit animal?

PJ Harvey? Tavi Gevinson? That okapi that got to meet Ryan Gosling when he was filming Ides of March? I have no idea.

YouTube Makes Videos Look Like VHS

TapeStan Schroeder2013-04-15 10:40:47 -0400

In a world where you can stream nearly any type of content from the cloud, the VHS tape is a relic of the past. Once upon a time, though, it was the most popular medium for watching and recording movies.

Now, YouTube is celebrating the 57th birthday of the video tape and offering everyone the chance to revive those times with a special "VHS mode" that appears on certain videos.

The "feature" is far from useful: it adds some artifacts over the video that used to appear on older or worn out video tapes. Also, trying to pause a video in VHS mode will result in a flickery mess, typical of video tapes, especially when combined with cheap VHS players.

It might be an unfamiliar sight to youngsters, but it will likely bring a tear of nostalgia to the eyes of video connoisseurs over 30.

Check out one video that has the VHS mode option enabled and let us know if this blast to the past made you all warm and fuzzy inside.

This Bra Dryer Makes Lingerie Laundry Easier

Bra-dryer2013-03-30 00:55:58 UTC

Drying bras is more complicated than you think. Pop them in the dryer and ruin the delicate pieces. Hang them on a line and you'll have to wait for hours. Luckily, one man has found the solution to our intimate first world problem with Ricasol, a bra dryer that solves your undergarment woes.

Using an infrared light to warm up the fabric, Ricasol evaporates moisture and preserves the garment's shape. To help maintain form, the warm air is close to human body temperature. The breast-shaped device dries your bra in 20 to 30 minutes on a flat surface and comes in a range of sizes.

You could just use a hair dryer for your delicates, but creators say the bra dryer takes half the time and safeguards details like lace or beading. Once you drape your bra over the panels and adjustable length straps, the appliance's control panel lets you select your bra type and amount of padding to automatically set air flow and temperature.

Alexander Farennikov designed Ricasol after a conversation with a female friend about the hardships of bra drying. Currently there's a waiting list for the device, which will cost $150-$200 once it becomes available.

Would you use this bra dryer? Let us know what you think in the comments.
