Vine's offering up the latest update to the iOS version of the video sharing app. Nope, it's not an Instagram-inspired lengthening. Instead, version 1.3 brings a handful of new tools to the micro-video service, assuring that you make the best six second film possible, including grid, focus and ghost. The app's also adding 15 new content channels like music, nature and comedy, each of which has its own distinct theme and Popular feed. Revining, meanwhile, makes it easier to share friends' videos and On The Rise, shows you up and coming Viners. Also new is protected posts, so you don't have to let the whole world in on your video brilliance, if you're the shy sort.

DabKick Will Change How You Share Photos and Videos

There’s something about being able to chat with someone while showing him or her photos from your last vacation, or a video of your child’s first steps, that makes the experience as a whole a lot more personal. Meet DabKick, an iOS app that attempts to recreate the experience of sharing media with friends in person using your smartphone.

Frustrated that he couldn’t find a good way to share media with friends and family, DabKick founder Balaji Krishnan created the app as a way to foster a more natural method of remotely sharing media.

The iOS app lets you share photos, video and music with friends — either through the app or on the web using HTML 5 — in real time, so what you see on your phone’s screen is what your friend sees as well.

The entire process is meant to happen live, somewhat like a phone call, where you send someone a DabKick request and go through images and content together. If your friend isn’t available, however, the app also offers the opportunity for you to leave a message for them, explaining the images as you flip through.

If your friend has the app, then he or she can comment and like photos as you go via text or voice, creating an interactive experience for everyone.

This week the app launched a new Music layer that lets you spice up the experience with some tunes. Now you can listen to free music –- pulled from YouTube –- with your friend while you’re sharing photos and video, listen to music by yourself while perusing pics, or access your friend’s songs and listen to music together.

Social features also let you share your “Dab Name” with someone and communicate within the app without passing out any personal information.

During a demo, Krishnan told me he could also see the feature being used for something like selling items on Craigslist, where you want to talk to someone — and perhaps show them photos of an item — but you don’t want to pass out your phone number or other personal info in the process.

DabKick is available now from the App Store.

'New York Times' Removes Paywall for Videos

In an attempt to beef up its online video viewership, The New York Times announced Tuesday that its videos are now available in full for free to everyone, including those without a subscription to the newspaper or its digital editions.

No matter the subscription you have (or don't have), you'll be able to watch as many videos as you like on the Times' website, mobile website and mobile applications. Views will not count as part of the 10-article per month limit imposed on non-subscribers.

Acura and Microsoft have signed on as sponsors to make the videos available beyond the paywall.

The video portals include primarily on-demand video, organized by current events — there's a section for the Boston Marathon bombings, for example — as well as by the paper's traditional verticals, including U.S., Business and Style.

The Times redesigned its video player last August. It also brought on Rebecca Howard, former head of video development at the AOL Huffington Post Media Group, as general manager of video production in February.

YouTube Makes Videos Look Like VHS

In a world where you can stream nearly any type of content from the cloud, the VHS tape is a relic of the past. Once upon a time, though, it was the most popular medium for watching and recording movies.

Now, YouTube is celebrating the 57th birthday of the video tape and offering everyone the chance to revive those times with a special "VHS mode" that appears on certain videos.

The "feature" is far from useful: it adds some artifacts over the video that used to appear on older or worn out video tapes. Also, trying to pause a video in VHS mode will result in a flickery mess, typical of video tapes, especially when combined with cheap VHS players.

It might be an unfamiliar sight to youngsters, but it will likely bring a tear of nostalgia to the eyes of video connoisseurs over 30.

Vine Grows the Ability to Embed Videos

Vine, with its easy way to create short GIF-like looping videos, has been a hit for Twitter, but its fans long for more features and functionality. Vine is answering that call a little bit today by adding the ability to embed Vine videos.

Previously, Vine users could embed tweets with vines, but now they'll be able to embed the Vine videos themselves, at full 600 x 600 resolution, on any website. Like so:

When you click on the Embed button on a Vine link, you can choose between a standard embed (above) or a "Postcard," which puts the Vine user's profile picture and the caption for the Vine in a white frame that surrounds the video (for standard embeds, that info appears via mouseover). For both standard and postcard embeds, you can choose between 600, 480 or 320 pixels for the resolution.

Vine revealed the upgrade in a blog post. Users can get the embed code for individual Vines either via the Vine website or through the iOS app by tapping the "..." in the lower right. The one caveat is the creator must have already shared the video outside of Vine.

Boxee TV Update Lets You Stream Your Network Videos

The Boxee TV cloud DVR box and Internet app player just got a firmware update, giving it new tricks and hopefully fixing many of its various flaws.

The set-top box was rolled out last October, and so far, it's been a work in progress.

The update's biggest enhancement is the addition of DLNA, that network magic that lets you view videos, photos or listen to music from any computer on your local network. Boxee has enabled DLNA to work through its File Browser app.

Keep in mind that while DLNA is useful, it's not quite as versatile as the ability to share a variety of video file types over your network via SMB. That's a trick Boxee's previous product, the artfully shaped Boxee Box, performed so well.

Why no SMB shares? If the Boxee TV's situation is anything like that of the Western Digital WD TV Play ($70), the additional hardware stack required for SMB sharing over a network could have been a cost consideration. That lack of SMB sharing would help keep the price of the Boxee TV at $99, a bargain for a DVR.

We asked Boxee's Andrew Kippen why this new update enables DLNA but not SMB shares. He said, "Supporting DLNA was a big request from users and adds both network file playback and DMR support (Airplay-like streaming from mobile devices) for the device which are both huge wins. We would love for the box to access every file protocol, but at the end of the day we're still a small team."

What else does this update bring? Well, if there are still any 3D fans left on the planet, they'll be happy to see that Boxee TV's Vudu app can now stream 3D video. In addition, the device's digital media renderer (DMR) uses the Boxee TV's newfound DLNA capability to wirelessly play video, music or pictures from any iOS or Android device. Hey, cool! That's like what the Apple TV box can do.

Beyond those marquee additions, users of Boxee TV will probably be the most delighted to see the numerous bug fixes folded into this update.

Reading down the list, all the new features and bug fixes are certainly welcome, but suggest that this is a product that was released to consumers before it was ready.

For instance, there's the bug fix that took care of Boxee TV's inability to switch channels on live TV using the remote's up and down keys when the on-screen display was open.

Other fixed bugs: Now users can program recordings from the box itself, rather than going to the Boxee cloud site. Shuttling forward to the end of a music video file caused an error message, and now that's fixed. There will be a better TV channel guide on board.

Before the update, the on-screen display showed incorrect times and durations for recorded shows, and users were unable to skip forward or back when they paused a recorded show. Those, too, were fixed, according to Boxee's support page.

These are all welcome updates, and if Boxee's previous product, the Boxee Box, is any indication, with every firmware and software update, the product becomes significantly better. Unfortunately, as soon as Boxee had cleaned up most of the issues with its Boxee Box, it was replaced by Boxee TV.

The dawn of Boxee TV started the development process anew. However, the idea of an online DVR that lets you record unlimited amounts of broadcast TV shows, and then watch them from anywhere (all for a monthly fee of $14.99), is a game changer.

The big question now is, will this firmware update fix its most pressing issues? Says Boxee spokesman Kippen, "This release fixes the most frequent crash issues. There's a few remaining bugs that still exist that we're hoping to address in the next update, but as you can see from the release notes, there's a lot of bug fixes in here."

The firmware update will be rolled out to Boxee TV boxes over the next three days, according to Boxee.

Atlas Genius Creates Music Videos With Vimeo's Top Filmmakers

Atlas Genius has held a top spot on the radio for the last three months with their hit single "Trojans."

A song so catchy and popular deserves a winning music video to go with it — so the Australian brothers decided to release four instead. The band partnered with Vimeo, producing unique music videos with top content creators on the platform.

"As an artist, you are always interested in how your audience interprets a song you wrote and in this instance we were able to dip into Vimeo's talent to create four amazingly different interpretations of 'Trojans,'" the band tells Mashable.

The first, shown above, is a claymation video by director Tyler Nicholson. Over the next month or so, the band will release the other three videos included in the project. Celia Rowlson-Hall created a live action love story which had a soft release during the album reveal. There will also be a hand drawn animation by Eric Funk and Pots N' Pans created a live action video with GoPro cameras, featuring Alexandra Miller from The Carrie Diaries.

The band signed with Warner Bros. Records in 2012, and is currently on tour with Imagine Dragons. Their debut album, When It Was Now released in February.

Vimeo's senior content and community manager Sam Morrill tells Mashable that this relationship with Warner Bros. has been a "really exciting opportunity." Warner Bros. sent the video-sharing platform, and Vimeo selected the four directors based on whose style would work best with the song. After they pitched their ideas to the band, Atlas Genius ultimately decided which videos were produced. Morrill says that everyone has been "thrilled" with the results so far.
