Inside the Biggest Cyberattack in History

Cyberattacks2013-03-27 23:16:46 UTC

A cyberattack originally targeting a single company is now being described by experts as one of the biggest Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks in Internet history. The assault, which recently began impacting elements of the Internet's physical infrastructure, has been dragging down Internet speeds in Europe — but what makes this type of attack different from all other attacks?

First, some background: The attacks originally targeted a European anti-spam company called Spamhaus, which blacklists what it considers sources of email spam and sells those blacklists to Internet Service Providers. The attack began early last week as waves of large but typical DDoS assaults shortly after Spamhaus blacklisted Cyberbunker, a controversial web hosting company. Cyberbunker has not directly taken responsibility for the attacks against Spamhaus.

In a common DDoS attack, hackers use thousands of computers to send bogus traffic at a particular server in the hopes of overloading it. The computers involved in DDoS attacks have often been previously infected with malware that gave a hacker control of the machine without the legitimate owner's knowledge. Hackers use malware (often sent via email spam) to amass large networks of infected computers, called "botnets," for DDoS operations and other purposes.

Spamhaus contracted with security firm CloudFlare to help mitigate the attacks soon after they began. CloudFlare has been defending Spamhaus by spreading the attacks across multiple data centers, a technique that can keep a website online even if it's hit by the maximum amount of traffic a typical DDoS can generate.

"Usually these DDoS attacks have kind of a natural cap in their size, which is around 100 gigabits per second," CloudFlare CEO Matthew Prince told Mashable before explaining the limitation in typical DDoS attack size is due to routing hardware limitations.

These attacks, however, have evolved into a complex and ferocious beast, pointing up to 300 gigabits per second at an expanding list of targets. How?

After the hackers realized they couldn't knock Spamhaus offline while it was protected by CloudFlare, they chose a different tactic: targeting CloudFlare's own network providers by exploiting a known fault in the Domain Name System (DNS), a key piece of Internet infrastructure.

"The interesting thing is they stopping going after us directly and they started going after all of the steps upstream from us," said Prince.

"The interesting thing is they stopping going after us directly and they started going after all of the steps upstream from us," said Prince. "Going after our immediate transit providers, then going after their transit providers."

DNS essentially turns what humans type into an address bar ("www.mashable.com") to the desired website's IP address and helps to deliver the desired Internet content to a user's computer. An essential element of the DNS system are DNS resolvers — 21.7 million of which are open and able to be found and manipulated by hackers.

"The attack works by the attacker spoofing the victim's IP address, sending a request to an open resolver and that resolver reflecting back a much larger response [to the victim], which then amplifies the attack," said Prince. A detailed technical explanation is available on CloudFlare's blog.

Because DNS resolvers are connected to large pipes with plenty of bandwidth to point at a target, hackers can manipulate them to amplify standard DDoS attacks from a maximum of about 100 gigabits per second to the neighborhood of 300 gigabits per second.

Prince told Mashable these attacks have been "certainly the largest attacks we've seen."

Prince told Mashable these attacks have been "certainly the largest attacks we've seen."

"And we've seen what we thought were some big attacks," he added. Kaspersky Labs, a leading security research group, called it "one of the largest DDoS operations to date."

Internet speeds around the world can be impacted by such large-scale DNS amplified DDoS attacks because the Internet relies on DNS to work — major interference with DNS can have consequences for services not necessarily being directly targeted by such an attack.

What can be done about preventing these specialized DDoS attacks? First, said Prince, Internet Service Providers should implement technologies that prevent hackers from spoofing victims' IP addresses. Second, network administrators need to close any and all open DNS resolvers running on their network.

"Anyone that's running a network needs to go to openresolverproject.org, type in the IP addresses of their network and see if they're running an open resolver on their network," said Prince. "Because if they are, they're being used by criminals in order to launch attacks online. And it's incumbent on anyone running a network to make sure they are not wittingly aiding in the destruction of the Internet."

If there's a silver lining to these continued attacks, it's that they have likely motivated the security industry, which has been talking about, but taken apparently insufficient action on, the open DNS issue for some time. Prince, however, warns DNS-amplified DDoS attacks won't be going away any time soon.

"The good news about an attack like this is that it's really woken up a lot of the networking industry and these things that have been talked about for quite some time are now being implemented," said Prince.

"There was some progress on shutting down open resolvers before," he added later. "I think that's going to be a constant process — this is a problem that we're going to have to live with for the next several years."

Google Maps Adds Real-Time Public Transit Info

Google-maps2013-03-27 20:53:34 UTC

Good news, New York City-based commuters: Google Maps added Wednesday real-time subway departure times for the seven lines that have such data available. These include the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and Times Square - Grand Central shuttle. The Metropolitan Transit Authority's other lines require an expensive overhaul before they'll be able to provide real-time data.

Metrorail riders in Washington, D.C., will also now receive up-to-the-second service alerts via Google Maps. That'll be handy for capitol denizens, who will be able to use the app to find routes that avoid any unplanned delays or schedule changes.

Public transit-goers in Salt Lake City, Utah, can also now receive bus and tram information in real time.

"With these updates — part of the millions of live transit schedule updates we process every day — you get instant access to the latest information right on Google Maps, making trip planning a cinch," reads a Google blog post on the update.

All Google Maps users on desktop, Android and iOS platforms can access the new transit information immediately. The MTA also recently released an official app which provides the same real-time New York City subway information as Google Maps now shows. Just remember, New Yorkers: Most stations don't have Wi-Fi or data access, so check your route before you head out!

Do you use Google Maps to plan your urban commutes? What are you other favorite public transit apps? Share in the comments below.

Robin Thicke's NSFW Music Video Flaunts Hashtags and Topless Models

Robin-thicke-nsfw2013-03-27 18:35:31 UTC

The #Thicke hashtag isn't the only thing Robin Thicke's new music video flashes. The not-safe-for-work clip for "Blurred Lines" featuring T.I. and Pharrell also flaunts topless models.

"You're going to be so ashamed of me," Thicke said jokingly to fans in a Google+ Hangout before adding that the video is "wonderful."

"My whole point of the video was to be provocative and show a sense of humor and to not take nudity seriously as we do in America sometimes," Thicke added. "A woman's body is the most beautiful thing on the planet. The Greeks used to sculpt that stuff."

Hashtags traditionally don't appear in music videos, especially as big or as frequently as #Thicke appears in "Blurred Lines." Its inclusion has sparked some conversation on Twitter, with some people saying it's hot and others being not too amused.

A version of "Blurred Lines" without topless models came out March 20.

NOTE: This is the clean version. For the NSFW version, watch the second video.

New Technology Could Engineer the Perfect Baseball Swing

Baseball2013-03-27 20:43:28 UTC

What if a baseball coach could truly determine what a player must do to hit the ball out of the park? New technology is underway that fuses physics and real-time data to help develop the perfect swing.

The University of Michigan has been working on a small device that looks at the entire three-dimensional motion of the bat as you swing, and measures reaction time, speed and control.

"We can report the metrics of a swing that are of great interest to players, coaches and recruiters, such as the bat speed at ball impact, the batter's reaction time, whether the swing is level or exhibits any upper cut or chop, the entire path of the batter's hands during the swing, the bat's swing plane and much more," Noel Perkins, professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan, told Mashable.

"Feeding that information immediately back to the coach and player accelerates training and improvement. It takes the guesswork out of knowing if your swing is improving or not," he added.

Progress can also be tracked, from minute to minute or month to month.

Here's how it works: a tiny, flat device with wireless sensors is tacked to the bottom of a baseball bat. It measures the acceleration of a point and the rotation rate, and transmits the data remotely, which is converted into visuals. For example, it would reveal if a swing had a bit of an upper cut and how that angle relates to velocity — all at a rate not typically seen with the naked eye. The collected data can be digested on a variety of platforms, from computers to tablets.

The concept emerged when Perkins developed an interest in fly fishing and became frustrated with learning to cast a fly rod. Although he read books on fly casting, took lessons and watched countless videos, he still couldn't get it right.

"I wanted to actually measure the motion of a fly rod and to use those measurements to understand what experts do well and what beginners (like me) do poorly," he said. "I learned a ton and, in addition to improving my skill in fly casting, I launched a research program at the University of Michigan with a focus on sport and athlete training."

So could Major League Baseball (MLB) use this technology in the future?

"It would certainly be of interest to any team from the MLB to Little League to help train better batters," Perkins said. "It might also be of interest to individual players (and parents) who are trying to improve on their own or between sessions with batting coaches."

The commercialization of the technology for baseball and software is currently in development with the university's partner Diamond Kinetics, a Pittsburgh-based startup. The research conducted has been sponsored by two leading bat manufactures, and its early prototypes have been used and evaluated by both companies and have had contact with MLB.

The University of Michigan has already partnered (via license agreements) with a number of entities to commercialize this technology for certain sports.

"Some of these are already on the market, while others are still being developed. We field inquiries all the time, from other sporting industries too, such as tennis, golf and bowling," Perkins said.

The good news is that the product is cheap to produce — estimates for production costs are as low as $30 for enabling the sensor hardware.

10 Technologies You Don't Need to Upgrade

2013-03-28 00:59:03 UTC

The tech industry is in constant flux. There's always a new laptop, smartphone or tablet (or, dare we say, "phablet") to make you and your devices feel ancient.

But did you know you use technologies every day that don't require any upgrades?

In this comic, Angela Liao of 20px highlights the different objects and "gadgets" that our generation hasn't really grown out of using. Can you think of anything else?

Boxee TV Update Lets You Stream Your Network Videos

Boxee-tv2013-03-27 19:09:13 UTC

The Boxee TV cloud DVR box and Internet app player just got a firmware update, giving it new tricks and hopefully fixing many of its various flaws.

The set-top box was rolled out last October, and so far, it's been a work in progress.

The update's biggest enhancement is the addition of DLNA, that network magic that lets you view videos, photos or listen to music from any computer on your local network. Boxee has enabled DLNA to work through its File Browser app.

Keep in mind that while DLNA is useful, it's not quite as versatile as the ability to share a variety of video file types over your network via SMB. That's a trick Boxee's previous product, the artfully shaped Boxee Box, performed so well.

Why no SMB shares? If the Boxee TV's situation is anything like that of the Western Digital WD TV Play ($70), the additional hardware stack required for SMB sharing over a network could have been a cost consideration. That lack of SMB sharing would help keep the price of the Boxee TV at $99, a bargain for a DVR.

We asked Boxee's Andrew Kippen why this new update enables DLNA but not SMB shares. He said, "Supporting DLNA was a big request from users and adds both network file playback and DMR support (Airplay-like streaming from mobile devices) for the device which are both huge wins. We would love for the box to access every file protocol, but at the end of the day we're still a small team."

What else does this update bring? Well, if there are still any 3D fans left on the planet, they'll be happy to see that Boxee TV's Vudu app can now stream 3D video. In addition, the device's digital media renderer (DMR) uses the Boxee TV's newfound DLNA capability to wirelessly play video, music or pictures from any iOS or Android device. Hey, cool! That's like what the Apple TV box can do.

Beyond those marquee additions, users of Boxee TV will probably be the most delighted to see the numerous bug fixes folded into this update.

Beyond those marquee additions, users of Boxee TV will probably be the most delighted to see the numerous bug fixes folded into this update. Reading down the list, all the new features and bug fixes are certainly welcome, but suggest that this is a product that was released to consumers before it was ready.

For instance, there's the bug fix that took care of Boxee TV's inability to switch channels on live TV using the remote's up and down keys when the on-screen display was open.

Other fixed bugs: Now users can program recordings from the box itself, rather than going to the Boxee cloud site. Shuttling forward to the end of a music video file caused an error message, and now that's fixed. There will be a better TV channel guide on board.

Before the update, the on-screen display showed incorrect times and durations for recorded shows, and users were unable to skip forward or back when they paused a recorded show. Those, too, were fixed, according to Boxee's support page.

These are all welcome updates, and if Boxee's previous product, the Boxee Box, is any indication, with every firmware and software update, the product becomes significantly better. Unfortunately, as soon as Boxee had cleaned up most of the issues with its Boxee Box, it was replaced by Boxee TV.

The dawn of Boxee TV started the development process anew. However, the idea of an online DVR that lets you record unlimited amounts of broadcast TV shows, and then watch them from anywhere (all for a monthly fee of $14.99), is a game changer.

The big question now is, will this firmware update fix its most pressing issues? Says Boxee spokesman Kippen, "This release fixes the most frequent crash issues. There's a few remaining bugs that still exist that we're hoping to address in the next update, but as you can see from the release notes, there's a lot of bug fixes in here."

The firmware update will be rolled out to Boxee TV boxes over the next three days, according to Boxee.

What's been your experience with Boxee TV? Let us know in the comments whether you think this new firmware update will solve the product's most pressing problems.
