Facebook_home1Stan Schroeder2013-04-16 16:57:19 UTC

Facebook Home will start rolling out to users outside of the U.S. on Tuesday, Facebook's head of mobile engineering Cory Ondrejka revealed at ATD's Dive Into Mobile conference.

Furthermore, Ondrejka said that the first update to Facebook Home is coming in the "second week of May." No details about the new version were given.

The new Facebook-centric UI for Android phones became available in the U.S. last week.

It is currently available for four Android smartphones: the HTC One X, HTC One X+, the Samsung Galaxy S III and the Samsung Galaxy Note II.

New Star Trek Villain Has a Really Big Ship

Star_trekStan Schroeder2013-04-16 18:45:42 UTC

We mean really, really big. In the latest trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness, we get another glimpse into the tough choices that captain James T. Kirk (played by Chris Pine) has to face — and one of those is fighting a very uneven space battle.

The fourth trailer for the upcoming movie, which hits cinemas on May 17, 2013, was chock-full of destruction. The new one, available on Apple's website, goes even farther, showing the Star Trek crew really challenged to their limits.

At 2:27, it's the longest trailer for the movie so far, but we wouldn't be surprised to see another trailer before the movie's release.

The movie is directed by J.J. Abrams and written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci. Besides Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto stars as Spock, Karl Urban as Bones, Simon Pegg as Scotty and John Cho as Hikaru Sulu, among others.

Turkish Musician Convicted of Insulting Islam on Twitter

Fazil-sayAlex Fitzpatrick2013-04-15 15:02:25 UTC

Renowned Turkish pianist Fazil Say was convicted Monday by a court in Turkey of insulting Islam in messages he posted on Twitter.

Say, 42, received a 10-month jail sentence on a five-year suspended basis, meaning he won't be sent to jail unless he convicted of another offense during the next five years.

Turkish authorities charged Say last June with insulting Islam after retweeting an 11th-century poem that satirized the Islamic afterlife and for another message critical of a local muezzin, the person tasked with making the daily calls to prayer at mosques. He faced a maximum sentence of 18 months in jail, according to the BBC.

Say, who was in Germany for a performance at the time the conviction was handed down, denied the charges as politically motivated and as a breach of human rights and freedom of expression. The globally-recognized pianist and composer has not been shy about expressing views considered radical in Turkey, including a public admission of atheism in a news interview quoted by The New York Times.

"Would it be for the government to decide whether a person believes in God or not," said Say in the interview.

The case against Say is the latest in a string of convictions against Turkish artists and intellectuals on charges related to religion or terrorism. Freedom House, an American research and advocacy group, rates Turkey "Partly Free" and notes that "roughly 100 journalists" were jailed in Turkey at the end of 2011, mostly charged under antiterrorism laws. Turkey's legal treatment of these and other groups is often considered a roadblock in its long quest to join the European Union as a full member.

Kevin Ware Tweets the Most Inspiring Pic You'll See Today

Kevin-ware-1Sam Laird2013-04-15 13:56:27 -0400

Got a case of the Mondays there, dear reader? Here's a photo that should put things in perspective.

Surely you remember Kevin Ware, the University of Louisville guard who became a March Madness icon two weeks ago after essentially snapping his right leg in half during a national quarterfinal game against Duke. His story largely played out on social media, where he became a force of inspiration.

Ware's been active on Twitter since the injury, gaining more than 100,000 followers in the process while becoming a national household name. He's posted messages of congratulations to his national champion teammates, corresponded with celebrities and expressed his determination to come back from the gruesome injury.

On Monday morning, however, he upped the inspiration ante by posting this pic of himself and his heavily bandaged right leg working out on an exercise bike:

That's a pretty incredible photo if you recall that, just sixteen days ago, Ware had a massive bone sticking out of that very same leg as he writhed in pain on the ground and his horrified teammates sobbed on the court.

So there you go. It may be Monday, your boss may be a jerk, the coffee may be cold and your inbox may be totally overwhelming — but take a look at Ware's pic and know that you, too, can endure and conquer this day.

Boston Marathon Explosions Kill 2

Boston-marathon-explosion-getty-imageEmily Banks2013-04-15 14:18:43 -0500

Two explosions occurred near the finish line of the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon. The news and images, including some graphic photos, unfolded on social media just before 3 p.m. According to a tweet from the Boston Police Department, 23 people were injured and two are dead. CNN reports as many as 49 injured. A live feed, hosted by CBS, of the finish line continues to show the aftermath of the explosion, including emergency vehicles and crew on the scene.

Twitter users shared graphic images of the scene. Mashable will refrain from sharing overly graphic images in the Storify below, however, you can follow these links to tweets, if you choose. WARNING — graphic images: from @JackieBrunoNECN8m, @theoriginalwak, @brm90, Vine user Doug, the AP; an especially detailed video with audio of the explosion at Boston.com.

At approximately 3:50, The Boston Marathon posted to Facebook:

There were two bombs that exploded near the finish line in today's Boston Marathon. We are working with law enforcement to understand what exactly has happened.

Boston Police said shortly after 4 p.m., approximately one hour after the explosions, that Boylston Street, the scene of the explosions was cleared. All off-duty police officers were also activated, and K-9 and SWAT units were on the scene. Boston Police confirmed a third explosion at the JFK Library (UPDATE: Police say the JFK incident was a fire and unrelated to the marathon explosions). Authorities have discovered other suspicious packages in the area and have detonated controlled explosions.

71% of Facebook Users Engage in 'Self-Censorship'

Facebook-sunglassesfor The Atlantic 2013-04-15 14:17:32 -0400

Most Americans now know the feeling of typing something into a social media input box, thinking again, and deciding against posting whatever it was. But while it certainly seemed like a widespread phenomenon, no one had actually quantified the extent of this "self-censorship."

But now, new research based on a sample of 3.9 million Facebook reveals precisely how widespread this activity is. Carnegie Mellon PhD student Sauvik Das and Facebook's Adam Kramer measured how many people typed more than five characters into Facebook content-input boxes, but then did not post them.

They term this "last-minute self-censorship." The research was posted to Das' website and will presented at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence's conference on Weblogs and Social Media in July.

The numbers are impressively large. Fully one-third of all Facebook posts were self-censored, according to the method Das and Kramer devised, though they warn they probably captured a substantial number of false positives. Seventy one percent of all the users surveyed engaged in some self-censorship either on new posts or in comments, and the median self-censorer did so multiple times.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the study was the demographic correlations with self-censorship. Men self-censored more often, particularly if they had large numbers of male friends. Interestingly, people with more diverse friend groups — measured by age, political affiliation, and gender — were less likely to self-censor.

While the researchers declined to speculate in this study about why people may or may not have self-censored, earlier research with a small group of users found five reasons people chose not share what they'd written: aversion to sparking an argument or other discussion, concern their post would offend or hurt someone, felt their post was boring or repetitive, decided the content undermined their desired self-presentation or were just unable to post due to a technological or other constraint.

For Facebook users, the main takeaway here is probably: Feel free not to share. Facebook, on the other hand, has to have a more complex relationship to this research. Their interaction and business models depend on sharing, but it's not hard to imagine some circumstances in which it would be better not to share: racist content, say.

Das and Kramer say future research should address when the non-sharing is "adaptive," (which I think means good, in this context) and when, in the words of Das and Kramer, "users and their audience could fail to achieve potential social value from not sharing certain content, and the [social-network service] loses value from the lack of content generation."
