Looks like spring is finally here, so you've probably spent more time outside, enjoying the nice weather and the blossoming trees than watching memes on YouTube — at least we hope. In that case, worry not, that's why we're here.

The runaway king of the viral videos this week was certainly the bizarre — and yet amazing — video of a cat in a shark suit, riding a Roomba, chasing a duck. Yes, that really exists. Speaking of following, having a new follower on Twitter is always a good thing, but how about having a giant Twitter bird following you in real life? Not so delightful.

Android Phones Pinpoint Snipers

The military has high-tech equipment to track sniper fire, using microphones carried by soldiers or stationary mics mounted at strategic points. Now that technology is getting shrunk so it can be used in the hands of civilian bodyguards with Android phones.

A team of computer engineers from Vanderbilt University, led by Akos Ledeczi, has developed an inexpensive piece of hardware and related software to turn an Android smartphone into a sniper finder. The Vanderbilt team described the new system at the 12th Association for Computing Machinery/IEEE Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks in Philadelphia earlier this month.

They built a sensor module that is about the size of a deck of cards. When a shot is fired, the sensor picks up the sounds and logs the exact time. The sensor then sends the data to a smartphone via a Bluetooth connection. If any other smartphones in the local wireless network have similar modules, the location of the gunshot can be pinpointed by the timing of the sounds’ arrival. It’s a similar idea to the ShotSpotter, a system used in Seattle to track locations of shooting incidents.

There are two versions of the system. One uses a single microphone per module, but requires at least six separate phones to accurately calculate the location of the shooter. The second setup has four microphones in each (slightly larger) sensor module, but needs only two separate phones to locate the sniper.

The sensors make use of a distinctive feature of gunshots: they produce two bangs.

Bullets make a second sound. As they are usually moving at supersonic speeds, it is a small sonic boom. The sound wave is conical, with the bullet at the point of the cone.

Timing when the two sounds arrive at the microphone can give a good idea of where the shot came from, and when that data is taken from separate locations, it allows for triangulating the sniper’s position.

Using the sonic boom form the bullet allows the microphones to “hear” the shots over longer ranges. Janos Sallai, a research scientist on Ledeczi’s team, told Discovery News that at larger distances, the spherical wave from the muzzle is distorted by obstacles on the ground. That’s one reason people have a difficult time figuring out where sounds like gunshots are coming from.

The microphones in a phone, he added, wouldn’t work. “Originally we were thinking of the phone mic, but the sampling rate wasn’t enough,” he said.

In addition, the noise cancellation that most phone makers build into them so that you can have a conversation in a crowded restaurant or outside, gets in the way.

Civilian bodyguards could use these sensors to protect dignitaries, with each member of a team equipped with a sensor module. If a shot were fired, the guards could track where it came from and help local police track down the shooter. Sallai added that the Secret Service has shown a lot of interest in this system and has even called for proposals.

'EVE Online' Player Stories Will Turn Into TV Series

Icelandic video game developer CCP Games plans to bring the science-fiction universe of EVE Online, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game, to television using stories written by some of the game's more than 500,000 subscribers.

CCP Games announced the news on Eve Online's Facebook page in a post saying the TV series will be "Based on a true story, 20,000 years into the future."

CCP Games will create the TV series with director Baltasar Kormákur, whose 2012 film The Deep was Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

"The EVE universe is full of astounding stories of epic battles, daring heists, and gripping political intrigue, all of which will make for an amazing television series," Kormákur said in a statement this weekend.

Eve Online players interested in submitting a story for possible inclusion in the TV series are encouraged to vist TrueStories.EVEonline.com, which describes the crowdsourced project as such:

The decade of history of EVE Online is unique. It has its heroes, scoundrels, heists and intrigue. Unlike other games, those are not stories written by developers and acted out by NPCs. They are true stories about the actions of the players that inhabit this world. Help us capture these true stories and vote for the best submissions! The result of this effort becomes an archive for all to learn about what really happened during the first decade in New Eden. Those true stories will inspire books, comics, TV series or films set in the EVE Universe.

Eve Online reaches its 10-year anniversary in May. EVE Online's 19th expansion, Odyssey, arrives June 4.

"The inhabitants of the notorious and beloved EVE universe have 10 years’ worth of dramatic stories to tell," CCP Games CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson said in a statement. "Our close collaboration with Baltasar and his creative team gives me confidence that we will capture EVE’s essence, inspiring millions of TV viewers with visions of humanity’s future."

Zach Braff Funds 'Garden State' Follow-Up Through Kickstarter

Zach Braff is the latest celebrity to successfully fund a film through Kickstarter.

The Scrubs actor raised $2 million in three days to fund a follow-up to his 2004 film, Garden State, according to the Associated Press. Currently, more than 30,000 backers pledged over $2.1 million to Braff's Wish I Was Here, with 25 days left in the campaign.

The actor said he was inspired to turn to Kickstarter after seeing fans flock to the crowdfunding platform to back a Veronica Mars movie.

"After I saw the incredible way Veronica Mars fans rallied around Kristen Bell and her show's creator Rob Thomas, I couldn't help but think ... maybe there is a new way to finance smaller, personal films that didn't involve signing away all your artistic control," Braff wrote on Kickstarter.

Braff added that signing a "typical financing deal" would mean sacrificing a lot to create the film.

Wish I Was Here is about Aidan Bloom (Braff), a struggling actor, father and husband who is searching for his identity. After Bloom can no longer afford to finance his kids' private-school education, he attempts to home-school them, and finds himself in the process.

Rewards for backers include t-shirts, signed posters and tickets to advance film screenings. Those who pledge $10,000 or more get the unique opportunity to be a cast member.

Despite the success that Braff and the Veronica Mars team have seen with Kickstarter, not every celeb has had luck with the platform. Alice Cooper, the godfather of shock rock, failed to fund his project; it ended on April 19 after reaching just over 25% of its $200,000 goal.
