LG's 5inch HD Oxide mobile display has a 1mmslim bezel, we go eyeson at SID

LG's flexible OLED display is just one of the company's many panels on show here at SID. Our next stop in the booth tour is a 5-inch HD prototype, which uses TFT Oxide technology for low power consumption and a super-slim profile. Like the 5-inch flexible panel, this guy sports a 1mm bezel, and a rep told us it utilizes IPS technology to offer wide viewing angles. The model you see here is rated at 250 nits, though LG expects a significantly higher brightness count by the time the panel makes it to market. As for when that will happen, "ASAP" is the only answer we received. Hit up our photo gallery below for a closer look.LG 5-inch HD Oxide mobile display eyes-on See all photos 8 Photos

DNP E Ink's threepigment Spectra displays update pricing in real time, are destined for supermarket shelves handson

In addition to demoing its Digital Paper collaboration with Sony here at SID, E Ink is showing off some new tech that's consumer-oriented in a very different way. Its solution for ESLs -- electronic shelf labels, obviously -- enables real-time pricing readouts for retailers such as supermarkets. E Ink's Spectra electronic paper display (EPD) is purportedly the world's first to offer three pigments: black, white and, for the demo's purposes, red. That third color can be swapped out for blue or green, but the point is to make the price placards readable -- both for customers and the businesses themselves. While these panels aren't widely adopted stateside, similar tech already has a firm footing in Europe. It's certainly more efficient to update the same screens with new info rather than swapping in new paper signs every time the price of milk fluctuates -- and it looks a lot cooler, too. Spectra will become available sometime in Q3 of this year.

E Ink's new Aurora EPD is a little less exciting for the average consumer, but the company says this tech is another first. Able to withstand super-low temperatures (as cold as -25 C), these screens will be incorporated into wireless shelf tags displaying MSRPs in freezers and especially frigid climates. According to E Ink, Aurora's low-temp film allows pigment to move even in cold environments, something we couldn't exactly put to the test on the SID show floor. Still, the company seems confident in its product; it will be shipping its displays to partners starting in July.?E Ink Spectra three-color retail display eyes-on See all photos 6 Photos

Yahoo to Hold News Conference Amid Tumblr Acquisition Rumors

Samantha-murphy By Samantha Murphy2013-05-17 20:45:20 UTC

Following rumors that Yahoo is in talks to buy blogging platform Tumblr for an estimated $1 billion, the company has sent members of the press invitations to a mysterious event it is holding next week.

The event, which will be held at 5:00 p.m. ET in New York City on Monday, includes the tagline on the invitation: "Join us as we share something special."

Yahoo Press Event Invitation

Company CEO Marissa Mayer is expected to speak at the product-related news event, according to CNBC.

The news comes as reports indicated this week Yahoo is closing in on a deal to buy Tumblr, which would make the transaction — if it's $1 billion — the largest since Facebook bought Instagram in 2012.

Twitter, NBA Team up for In-Stream Video Replays

Twitter-basketball Sam-laird By Sam Laird2013-05-17 21:11:22 UTC

If there was ever any question that sports are one of Twitter's hottest, most passion-inducing topics, this week should have put those doubts to rest.

The microblogging network on Friday announced a deal with the NBA to stream replay highlights directly to users through in-app video posts. The clips will debut during this year's playoffs with the hashtag #NBARapidReplay. They'll be monetized through ads from Sony, Taco Bell and Sprint that will be featured with the replays.

Twitter's NBA news comes on the heels of a similar deal it announced on Tuesday with sports broadcasting giant ESPN. ESPN will soon begin posting short, ad-supported video highlights directly to Twitter from events including World Cup qualifiers, college football match-ups and the X-Games.

In addition to underscoring the huge presence of sports and sports fans on Twitter, both moves also reflect Twitter's evolution into an increasingly content-focused platform. Photos, videos and article previews have gained increased prominence on the social network over the past year or so.

While the NBA and ESPN partnerships make for a big week, Twitter has experimented with boosting sports highlights on the network before. During this year's March Madness, it ran short highlights from games just minutes after they occurred in a deal with the NCAA. It partnered with ESPN for a similar arrangement during last year's college football bowl season.

It's safe to expect the relationship between sports entities, Twitter and brands will grow over the coming years and months.

"We know that consumers often react to live sports on Twitter," Dwight Caines, Sony Pictures Entertainment's head of digital marketing, said of the NBA deal on Friday. "This was a perfect way to be a part of their second screen experience."

3M, Nanosys ready to bring quantum dot film to LCD makers

3M to Bring More Color to Consumer Electronic Devices

3M and Nanosys offer stunning visual enhancements to LCD devices

Tuesday, May 21, 2013 7:00 am CDT, ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--3M announced today it is in the final stages of scale-up for its new 3M™ Quantum Dot Enhancement Film (QDEF). The new film allows up to 50 percent more color than current levels in liquid crystal display (LCD) devices. 3M has teamed with Nanosys, Inc., to produce the 3M QDEF solution specifically to deliver more color, and to make devices such as smart phones, tablets and televisions, lighter, brighter and more energy efficient.

Current LCDs typically are limited to displaying 35 percent or less of the visible color spectrum. This means the viewing experience on an LCD can be vastly different than what a person sees in the real world. Wide color gamut displays will allow consumers to enjoy more visceral, more immersive and truer-to-life color.

"One of the many advantages of the new 3M QDEF solution is the film's ability to deliver richly-saturated colors, while minimizing power consumption – a difference you can clearly see," said Ty Silberhorn, vice president and general manager, 3M Optical Systems Division. "We will have qualification material available to customers for design cycles starting late second quarter this year."

Over the years, 3M light management technologies have made LCDs thinner, lighter and more energy efficient. Color performance of LCDs industry-wide has gone largely unchanged until now. 3M research data shows that devices with 3M QDEF-enabled wide color gamut will be noticeably different from other standard LCD devices, prompting the human eye to dwell on the display longer than less-saturated displays.

QDEF utilizes the light emitting properties of quantum dots to create an ideal backlight for LCDs, which is one of the most critical factors in the color and efficiency performance of LCDs. A quantum dot, which is 10,000 times narrower than a human hair, can be tuned to emit light at very precise wavelengths. This means display makers can create a highly-optimized backlight that only produces the exact wavelengths of red, green and blue light needed by an LCD for optimal color and energy performance. Trillions of these quantum dots protected by barrier film fit inside an LCD backlight unit. The new film replaces one already found inside LCD backlights, which means the manufacturing process requires no new equipment or process changes for the LCD manufacturer.

"Improving color performance for LCDs with simple, drop-in manufacturing solutions will create a stunning new visual experience for consumers," said Jason Hartlove, president and CEO, Nanosys, Inc. "Working together with 3M and utilizing their outstanding design and supply chain capabilities will allow our quantum dot technology to be widely deployed across all product segments, ensuring availability to all customers."

Both 3M and Nanosys, Inc., will attend Society of Information Display's DisplayWeek, May 21 – 23, 2013, in Vancouver, British Columbia. For more information: www.displayweek.org.

Watch Steve Aoki's New Music Video Featuring Ray Kurzweil

Todd-olmstead By Todd Olmstead2013-05-17 20:10:04 UTC

Electronic musician Steve Aoki is a self-professed "Apple geek" and otherwise a big fan of technology.

For his new music video for the track "Singularity," which Mashable is presenting for the first time exclusively, he recruited futurist and technologist Ray Kurzweil to participate. Kurzweil, who became Google's Director of Engineering earlier this year, is famous for his predictions about the future in which human minds will be able to interface directly with machines. His 2005 book, The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology was a New York Times bestseller and was made into a movie, released in 2012.

The video begins with Kurzweil looking into a camera and saying, "Hi, Steve. I want to tell you about our future."

SEE ALSO: When Will Humans Upload Their Brains to Computers?

The track, which was released in February 2013, also features frequent Aoki collaborators Angger Dimas and My Name is Kay. Kurzweil does not appear on the audio version of the track.

The video is a creepy bit of sci-fi that blends well with Aoki's electronic music. In it, we see a sinister figure wearing a Bane-like mask capture Aoki and perform an operation on him. He injects him with a mysterious liquid, fusing him with the non-biological elements that Kurzweil alludes to in the video.

"We'll be a hybrid of biological and non-biological intelligence," he says. "But the non-biological part of ourselves will also be part of our consciousness."

Arduino Yun weds Arduino, WiFi and linux at Maker Faire 2013

The Arduino Robot wasn't the only interesting product the Italian company launched at Maker Faire this past weekend. Arduino Yún combines a Leonardo board (featuring Atmel's ATmega32u4) with a MIPS-based WiFi SoC (Atheros AR9331) running Limino (an OpenWRT / linux derivative). It includes everything you'd expect from a Leonardo board plus WiFi, wired Ethernet, a USB host port and a microSD card slot. The Arduino side can be programmed wirelessly and communicates with the WiFi SoC via SPI and UART interfaces using the new Bridge Library, which delegates networking to the linux side. Out of the box, the board behaves just like any standard WiFi access point with a full web interface -- it even allows SSH access. Arduino Yún is the first of a family of WiFI-enabled products and will be available late June for $69. Check out the gallery below for some closeup shots, and follow the source for more details. Google-offers Samantha-murphy By Samantha Murphy2013-05-17 18:06:16 UTC

Google's deal-of-the-day service Google Offers is coming to its social network Google+, so users can see and share limited-time promotions directly with their news stream.

Companies participating in the Google Offers program, such as Zagat, Hello Kitty, Nook and Art.com are among the brands who can now share deals with their network on Google+.

"If you follow any of these brands, you'll soon see offers from them in your stream," Dennis Troper at Google said in a post on his Google+ page. "You can save these offers directly from the post."

Google Offers

Saving offers will allow Google+ users the ability to click through to redeem the offer online. Even if they aren't signed up for the Google Offers service, they will be privy to the deals.

Reporter Crowdfunds Alleged Footage of Mayor Smoking Crack

Rob-ford Alex-fitzpatrick By Alex Fitzpatrick2013-05-17 18:21:14 UTC

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is denying the reported existence of camera-phone footage showing him partaking in crack cocaine.

How is that video not online yet, you ask? Gawker's John Cook posted a story describing the video, but refused to pay the sources the $200,000 they demanded for the file. Cook — who broke the story Thursday — has turned to crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo to raise the cash for the footage.

Cook's "Rob Ford Crackstarter" has only raised $55 at press time, though three separate Ford-related campaigns have garnered approximately $2,500 between them.

In a post about the campaign, Cook acknowledges $200,000 is "a lot of money," but says his sources "fear for their safety, and want enough money to pay for a chance to get out of Toronto and set up in a new town." He goes on to address concerns his sources may not be "reliable" kinds of people, but promises that if the deal falls through, whatever funds are raised will be donated to an unnamed Canadian non-profit that assists people with addiction.

Mashable has reached out to IndieGoGo for comment on the various Ford-related campaigns.

Cook's story, along with a separate piece on the video from the Toronto Star, caused a major stir about Ford, who has a well-documented history of strange behavior.

Ford outright rejected the claim Friday afternoon directly to reporters and through his lawyer, generating headlines like "Toronto mayor denies smoking crack cocaine."

"I think unless one has expertise in crack cocaine smoking it is very difficult to gauge what a person is actually doing in an alleged video," Ford's laywer Dennis Morris told the Toronto Sun.

Toronto Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday also came to Ford's defense, telling The Sun the claims are "just allegations until they are proven" and reminding reporters that video footage is notoriously easy to fake.

Would you donate to Cook's IndieGoGo campaign? Share your thoughts in the comments.
