'Iron Man 3' Footage Exposes Tony Stark's Anger Toward the Mandarin

Iron-man-32013-04-05 19:09:39 UTC

Billionaire bad boy Tony Stark melts down in front of paparazzi — exposing his home address and destroying a journalist's phone before speeding off inside a spiffy ride — in this fresh Iron Man 3 video released Friday.

The man behind the Iron Man armor wants "good old-fashioned revenge" against the villain the Mandarin, who is hellbent on ruining Stark's personal life.

"I'm not afraid of you," Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., warns the Mandarin. "I know you're a coward. So I decided you just die, pal. I'm going to come get the body."

Iron Man 3 stars Downey Jr. Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley.

Amazon Hires Former Windows Phone Exec to Work on 'Something Secret'

Amazon-exec2013-04-02 13:28:53 UTC

Amazon has hired Charlie Kindel, the former general manager for Microsoft's Windows Phone to work on "something secret."

Kindel, whose name prompted suspicions that he may have been trying to pull off an April Fool's hoax, wrote on his LinkedIn profile that he's working on "something wonderful" at Amazon. Under his title, Kindel wrote "Director, Something Secret."

Prior to joining Amazon, Kindel was the general manager of Windows Phone Developer Experience from January 2009 to August 2011 where he worked on the Windows Phone 7 platform. Just prior to joining Amazon, Kindel was CEO of BizLogr, a startup he founded that created MileLogr, an app that help you log your mileage for tax purposes.

Amazon's latest hire will doubtlessly fuel speculation that the company is working on an Amazon-branded smartphone. That product has been rumored for some time.

10 Job Skills Startups Will Kill For

Megaphone-jobs-istockphoto2013-04-02 12:12:34 -0400

Scott Gerber is the founder of Young Entrepreneur Council, an invite-only organization comprised of promising young entrepreneurs. The YEC's #StartupLab is a free virtual mentorship program that helps millions of entrepreneurs grow businesses via live video chats.

Recruiting top-tier tech talent continues to be a challenge for startup founders — many are still looking to fill important jobs that involve a diverse mix of marketing, content, tech and people skills, including some you've probably never heard of.

The following panel of successful founders shares which skill sets they think will be in high demand at a startup near you — and why.

I think for most new startups, while they are mainly "tech" companies, it's not the technology that "makes" the company. It's the usability and the experience, and a designer is the chief architect of the user's experience. I think founding teams are going to move from a traditional two-person team (business/engineer) to three-person teams, incorporating a designer to be able to differentiate.

- Jessica Brondo, The Edge in College Prep

Growth hackers, people with deep analytical skillsets and the ability to influence product and often write code themselves, are invaluable to early stage startups that often lack focus on distribution.

Enterprise software sales people, who often make $250,000-$500,000+ per year, are also in an enviable position right now, with nearly unlimited job opportunities and very generous comp packages.

- Matt Mickiewicz, Flippa and 99designs

"Growth hacker" is a term that has a lot of cache right now, but it's a misfire. What's going to resonate for growing startups are people who, at their core, look like marketers, but have a deep dedication to analytics and product design.

Telling the story the way a marketing mind wants to is the element that "growth hacker" misses — startups need product-minded people who know how to market.

- Derek Shanahan, Playerize

I think there's a real opportunity for someone who understands how to create systems, processes and automation tools inside a business. It's not about adding more people, but how to be more efficient using the technology that's available to us all. Someone who has knowledge in programming, analytic thinking and sees opportunities in bad processes in a business will have many options.

- Chris Brisson, Call Loop & Automize

The ability to architect and develop a scalable software solution that can predict future outcomes (based on continually analyzing multiple sets of disparate data) will be a key component for any tech company looking to disrupt an industry over the next decade. Some are starting to tackle this problem by hiring data science engineers.

- Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer, AirPR

Good content is absolutely crucial for building up credibility for your business and helping draw prospective customers. We are seeing the importance of strong writers, researchers, marketing designers, community managers and others that help produce very high-quality content. Creative people who write, design and communicate well are in much higher demand.

- Eric Koester, Zaarly

It's a little unorthodox, but I think every company needs someone whose sole purpose is to be an advocate of the user. Like an ombudsman of the company, he looks critically at every interaction, every experience, acting as if he were a user of the company. Often, everyone at a company is in a bubble, so it's important to have someone who's consciously trying to remain on the "outside."

- Adam Stillman, Ditto Holdings

We see contracts go through our platform daily, and we have detailed metrics on which job categories are growing, so we know where to apply our recruitment teams' resources. Ruby on Rails is one of the best languages to know if you'd like to get a great position fast, with back-end development a close second. Mobile development has been hot for years and is only getting hotter.

- Liam Martin, Staff.com

Everyone thinks that tech is where the innovation is taking place, but I think the next explosion is in tech-enabled businesses offline. A construction company needs a website, but it also needs to track inventory, logistics, planning and metrics. Technology can do a lot to make it more complete and more profitable. To me, the companies that are often not the "sexiest" are the most interesting.

- Wade Eyerly, Surf Air

Big data was all the buzz in 2012, but now it's time to make sense of it all. Every company, from startups to corporations, is tracking data and learning more than we ever knew about ourselves. If you have the skills to normalize this data, spot trends and explain it in an easy-to-understand way, you'll have a job.

Western Union Mulls Using Bitcoin

Wu2013-04-02 16:31:37 UTC

Western Union, a 162-year-old firm that made its name by offering telegraphs, is considering embracing the digital age by accepting Bitcoin and other types of digital payment methods, according to a report.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the company is interested in getting a slice of online transactions like gaming and telephony. "If you want to top up a Skype account or add value to an online gaming platform, those are the kinds of partnerships I’m working to develop,” David Thompson, EVP of global operations and CIO at Western Union told the WSJ. Western Union reps could not be reached for further comment.

The company, which stopped offering telegrams in 2006, provides person-to-person money transfers and lets consumers pay their bills online. In 2008, Western Union also introduced a mobile service that enabled cash-to-mobile, mobile-to-cash and mobile-to-mobile transfers. In the former cases either the send or receiver has to visit a physical Western Union location. With the latter, a mobile-enabled account can send funds to a recipient with a mobile-enabled account.

Bitcoin, an Internet-based currency system, was introduced in 2009. The value of Bitcoins are held in check by a process known as mining. Under the system, computers connected to the network (known as miners) aim to find the solution to a certain mathematical problem. If they successfully solve the problem, a new block is created. Until December 2012, the value of each block was 50 BTC (Bitcoins). Every four years, the value of solving a block is halved. Though it's unlikely that Bitcoin could become a de facto world currency, the idea recently gathered some steam when a Bitcoin-based ATM opened up in economically troubled Cyprus.

The Best iPad App for Google Reader Is Now Free

Reeder-ipad2013-04-02 15:51:18 UTC

Mourning the impending demise of Google Reader? You'll at least be able the take some solace in the news that Reeder, one of the most popular apps for using the service, is now free.

As of today, Reeder is free for iPad and Mac, the developer announced. Previously, those downloads would have cost you $4.99 each. The iPhone version, however, retains its $2.99 price.

Why would the app, which is a simple client for Google Reader, continue to charge for downloads when the service it depends on is going to be shut down on July 1? First, the iPhone version has more functionality. And second, Reeder is evolving. The developer, Silvio Rizzi, says he'll continue supporting it — in some form — after Google Reader dies.

For now, Rizzi isn't saying exactly what Reeder will become, but he did reveal the next step in its transformation in a note on the Reeder site:

I'm currently working on integrating Feedbin and adding support for standalone/local RSS (still experimental). You'll get these features with the next update (3.1) which should be ready soon. That's just the beginning, the plan is to add more services you can choose from in the next weeks and months.

The Mac and iPad apps are only free until they get the Reeder 2.0 update, bringing them up to speed with the iPhone app. That should happen "in the coming months," Rizzi said.

Reeder is often hailed as the best client app for Google Reader. Mashable senior tech analyst Christina Warren picked it as one of the Best Mac Apps of 2011, saying it was "a great looking RSS client that syncs with Google Reader.... My favorite aspect of Reeder is its ease of use in sharing and syncing feeds with other services."

Will you be downloading Reeder now that it's free, or have you already moved on to another service such as Feedly? Let us know in the comments.

Obama Unveils Bold Plan to Map the Human Brain

Brain2013-04-02 13:41:33 UTC

President Barack Obama on Tuesday unveiled an intrepid plan to develop tools that can better map the human brain, furthering scientists' understanding of how it works and how it can be healed when damaged. The Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies initiative, or BRAIN, will begin with a $100 million investment in Obama's 2014 budget.

The White House is hopeful that BRAIN will result in the development of neural imaging technologies that will give scientists an unprecedented look at how different sections of the human brain interact in real-time speeds, potentially paving the pay for treatments for debilitating disorders such as Alzheimer’s and epilepsy.

"These technologies will open new doors to explore how the brain records, processes, uses, stores, and retrieves vast quantities of information, and shed light on the complex links between brain function and behavior," reads a White House press release on the BRAIN initiative.

During a White House event revealing the BRAIN project, Obama made the case that the program would provide an economic return on the government's investment and maintain America's status as a leader of global innovation.

"The most powerful computer in the world isn't nearly as intuitive as the one we're born with," said Obama.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) announced his support for the BRAIN initiative through his communications director:

Three federal agencies will be at the forefront of the BRAIN initiative: The National Institutes of Health, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the National Science Foundation. DARPA, the Department of Defense's advanced research wing, is particularly interested in technology which could help doctors treat post-traumatic stress, brain injury, and memory loss — all of which can take a toll on soldiers' health.

Top academic leaders, including Dr. Cornelia Bargmann of The Rockefeller University and Dr. William Newsome of Stanford University, will guide the program. Obama will also ask a bioethics commission to explore any ethical issues raised by the BRAIN research.

The BRAIN initiative recalls the Human Genome Project, a 13-year U.S. Department of Energy-backed project begun in 1990 to identify and map human DNA structure.

How to See EVERYTHING in Your Facebook News Feed

Facebook-news-feed-copy2013-04-02 17:23:31 UTC

Facebook introduced its overhauled News Feed in early March. If you're one of the few who can access the new design, you may wonder how the changes affect what surfaces on the homepage.

While Facebook's algorithms determine by default what appears in your stream, a few additional, new options give you much greater control over what appears in your News Feed. For example, you can choose to view only photo-related posts, music-themed updates, or posts from pages and people you follow via Subscribe (as opposed to simply users you're friends with).

But if you don't want to miss any updates whatsoever, you can kick it old school and set News Feed to view every single post in real time.

The change effectively turns your News Feed into an expanded, visual version of Facebook Ticker. That means you'll not see status updates, but also more granular actions, for example, when your friend likes a photo — even if that photo was posted 48 hours ago. Yes, it's that detailed.

If you've already got the new News Feed, follow the simple instructions below to surface everything in your stream. If you're still on the old version, consider adding yourself to the wait list for the new look here.

From your Facebook homepage, click on the grey arrow at the top-right of your screen:

This gives you a list of new News Feed options:

Next, click "See All." This shows you all the different News Feed settings, including any groups you may be part of and any friends and family lists you've set up.

If you want to see everything in the order it is posted, select "Most Recent."

Your News Feed will now change to show you everything, in time order. To change it back, simply hit the down arrow again and select a different setting.

How will you use the new News Feed? Do you want to see everything in your stream? Have your say in the comments below.

Webby Awards Unlock Internet Time Machine

Old-computer-12013-04-02 14:00:11 UTC

The Webby Awards mark 16 years of honoring Internet excellence with a digital skip down memory lane.

The Oscars of the Web teamed up with Internet Explorer to launch the Winners Gallery + Archive, an interactive digital history book documenting nominees of past years. Rather than simply list the winners in text, the project pictures how all the nominees looked the year they battled for the honor.

Ready for a flashback? Below is what You Don't Know Jack looked like in 1997 when it took the top prize in the Games category.

Diving into the awards' early days is an explosion of nostalgia for anyone who remembers a web world filled with pixelated GIFs and rampant white space. Screen captures for sites like The Netizen and Migraine Boy could make early web lurkers feel seriously sentimental.

"We definitely thought about [the nostalgia factor] a lot," David-Michel Davies, Executive Director of The Webby Awards told Mashable. "Once we got all the material and data and started seeing it first hand, it really struck us how much has changed in such a short amout of time — to think about all the milestones and huge changes in just five or 10 years."

The archive isn't all 1990s flashbacks, though. Users can navigate through more than a decade of web changes and growth. In 1997, 70 million people used the Internet (or surfed the web, as we'd say back then) and the Webbys handed out 14 awards. By contrast, in 2012, 2.4 billion people connected to the Internet and the Webby Awards expanded to honor 238 winners.

"The Webby Awards mirrored the type of change we've seen in Internet culture and pop culture," Davies said. "When we started, we knew it was plainly obvious that the web would have a major impact on the world. Now we're seeing that change realized. All different parts of the Internet have come together and become the central driving force of change in the world."

The site, created by design firm Area17, includes a search feature that allows users to see how their favorite 'Net stuff has stacked up against the competition.

Davies told Mashable that the project aims to please two different types of users. The first: people in the Internet and design industries who can look at the evolution of the web during the past 10 years and find inspiration to generate new ideas that will become the future of our online experience. The second type of people are the general population — the 2.4 billion online — with an interest in Internet culture who will be able to easily navigate the archive on their laptop, tablet, mobile or PC.

Users can even help complete the project. The archive has a crowdsourced element that asks visitors to submit screen grabs and design credits for nominees currently listed without imagery. Someone out there must know the geniuses behind the original Mr. Showbiz, right?

The nominations for the 17th annual Webby Awards will be announced April 9 and the winners on April 20.
