Young Republicans to Make Abortion Funny

Salon's Alex Seitz-Wald has a disturbing dispatch from the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference in Washington today, where young Republicans are trying to figure out how to appeal to millennials with some edgy abortion humor.

“How do you make abortion funny?” That was a key question mulled at a major conservative gathering Friday on how to make social conservatism appealing to young people, after an election where Republicans got trounced in the battle for millennial voters (who are are moving even further and further away from the Christian right on marriage and other issues).

Abortion has to be made funny, the thinking goes, because funny sells on social media, and that’s where one goes to court young people. “You can engage with sarcasm, it’s hard with the abortion issue, but you have to,” said Students for Life President Kristan Hawkins at a breakout panel at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference in Washington today on how to win millennial voters. “Unfortunately we have to, because this is the generation that we’ve been dealt.”

It all makes me worried these kids haven't been paying close enough attention. It's not abortion that gets the big laughs, it's the ignorance of anti-abortion politicians.

The Coolest Skin Hydrator to Put On Your Face

Illamasqua's newest product name, Hydra Veil Rehydrating Gel, might be slightly confusing. Is it a moisturizer? Is it a treatment? Is it black magic? Well, it's kind of all those things. The clear, jelly-like formula includes ingredients that provide a plumping, hydrating effect on the skin but also smooth out the surface for easy makeup application. It's packaged in a black pot that looks like a witch's cauldron (tiny applicator spoon included), and it's essentially a moisturizer/primer hybrid.

There are a few ways to apply the oddly-textured gel (more on that in a bit): Slather it onto the skin like a primer (following your own moisturizer) and a micro-algae derived antioxidant will give complexions a glowy, hydrated look without seeming greasy. You can put it on all over, or just in spots that seem the most dry; either way, the stuff melts right into your face with a clean finish. If you're a foundation wearer, you'll notice that makeup will go on more smoothly and last all day without flaking (unless your skin is very dry like mine, and constantly begs for more moisture). I used it to revive my makeup after a lunch and before dinner without actually having to touch-up my foundation. You can also apply it midday in the under-eye region for a cool dose of hydration. I noticed a slight tightening effect that made me think all those fine lines were getting whisked away.

So about that weird texture? Definitely plan on using the mini-spoon, which is usually the first thing people toss with other face creams. This jar has an ingenious clip attached to the lid for easy storing of said spoon. Which is good, because if you try to use your (warm) fingers, you'll notice that the formula will dissolve right into your hands (like it does on your face). If you use the spoon to scoop, the formula will land where it's supposed to be. And you'll have fun swirling the thing around to see the gel break apart and then congeal back together, like cosmetic quicksand.

GEAK Eye and Mars smartphones

GEAK may be focusing its attention on wearable tech like the Ring and Watch, but it still has a pair of new offerings for those who like old-fashioned smartphones: meet the 5-inch Eye and 5.8-inch Mars. Both are tailored to photo junkies with 13MP, backside-illuminated rear cameras as well as strong front cameras that shoot at 8MP (Eye) and 2MP (Mars). Differences between the handsets revolve mostly around performance and screen size. The Eye keeps things modest with a 720p IPS display, a quad-core MediaTek MT6589, HSPA+ data, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Spring for the extra-large Mars and you'll upgrade to a 1080p IPS LCD, a Snapdragon 600 and 2GB of RAM. Either way, you won't be paying a lot for the imaging prowess -- when pre-orders start on June 25th, GEAK will ask ¥1,999 ($326) off-contract for the Eye and ¥2,999 ($490) for the Mars. Just don't expect either to leave China when there's no word of international plans.

Banks brace for cyberwarfare drill Quantum Dawn 2

Come June 28th, Wall Street outfits including the likes of Citigroup and Bank of America will be under siege -- from fake hackers, that is. Representatives from a total of 40 companies along with the Federal Reserve, Securities and Exchange Commission, US departments of Treasury and Homeland Security will take part in Quantum Dawn 2: a simulated cyberattack on faux trading and information systems. Led by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, the drill will test the ability of participants to cooperate via email and phone to suss out what's going on and hatch a plan. The exercise will momentarily pause so that those involved can decide on a course of action, and then it'll speed up and model the effects of the decision over a longer period of time. With the recent flurry of hacking incidents and international finger pointing, something tells us this won't be the last we hear of drills like Quantum Dawn.

How to Pair Red Lips and Citrus Nails, the Solange Way

Over the weekend at Bonaroo, Solange Knowles took to the stage wearing a muted pastel crop top and skirt ensemble. It was summery and sweet. But her lip and nail color choices kept the overall look from appearing too saccharine. As neighbors on a color wheel, red and orange are meant to play well together; many opt to keep them apart for fear of going too bold. They are, after all, the main hues found in blazing flames and most hot sauce labels.

While we can't be sure of her exact product choices, Knowles's electric orange polish looks a lot like RGB's Monarch, while her lip color appears to have the matte, pigment power of the all-time beauty classic, Nars' Red Square Velvet Matte lip pencil. Non-matchy-matchy looks aren't a novel idea, but we can't help but draw attention to a nail and lip pairing that can hold its own against a head full of mesmerizing hair twists.

Mrs. Carter Partied in a Roberto Cavalli Gown

Last night, Queen Bey, who's currently on break from the Mrs. Carter Show world tour, joined Mr. Carter at the 40/40 Club's 10 Year Anniversary Party. For the festive occasion, the singer wore a knitted, sleeveless, floor-grazing number covered in cutouts from Roberto Cavalli's spring 2013 collection. She styled her white, summer-ready gown with a gold clutch and a dainty choker necklace featuring a sideways cross — which might be more fitting if she were married to Yeezus.
