How to Turn Your iPhone Into a Drone Ground Station

2013-04-02 17:54:11 UTC

Hobby and do-it-yourself drones are starting to make appearances in American skies, and as they get cheaper and more popular, we'll see more and more of them. But some of these drones aren't too easy to control from the ground, requiring a custom-built controller or computer software. That's where a new project to turn your iPhone or iPad into a drone "ground station" comes in.

The people behind the project, who are raising funds on Indiegogo, have created a snap-on, iOS-compatible device that can be used to control popular drones like the Parrot AR with a user-friendly interface directly on an iPhone or iPad.

The device, named the "Fighting Walrus Radio" (after its shape, which is reminiscent of a peering walrus), extends a drone's range from 200 feet to up to a mile. To achieve this range extension, the drone must also be equipped with a radio receiver, which connects to the Fighting Walrus antenna. It's important to note, however, that current Federal Aviation Administration regulations require amateur drones to be flown within the pilot's line of sight.

The basic accessory will cost $99, but the developers have a series of other ready-to-fly kits customized for different UAV models that can cost anywhere from $140 to $2,400.

The project has raised almost $15,000 out of its goal of $50,000, but there are still 14 days to go (also, unlike Kickstarter projects, the developers will receive funds regardless of reaching the goal.) Andrew Aarestad, one of the developers, think this is just the beginning. "It's a niche product for now," he told the US News and World Report. "We feel that given a year or two, there will be exponentially more people using [drones] in ways that would benefit from the radio."

To learn more about this project, watch the video above.

'Game of Thrones' Facebook Game Will Follow HBO Series

Battle-of-blackwater-game-of-thrones2013-04-02 16:03:16 UTC

If you're still trying to get over Sunday night's premiere of HBO's Game of Thrones, and suffering from Westeros withdrawal, you can get your fix in Game of Thrones Ascent on Facebook.

Game of Thrones Ascent, released in beta on Facebook in February, is going to start releasing new content each Monday that pairs with episode of Game of Thrones shown the night before. As season 3 gets underway, players will be able to play along as the events unfold in the show.

On Monday, Disruptor Beam, the team behind the game, released the first content update "Episode 1: Valar Dohaeris", which allows players to access content from that episode as well as the end of Season 2. Players can even take part in Season 2's Battle of Blackwater Bay.

Game of Thrones Ascent is a story-focused Facebook game where players create their own character in the fictional Westeros, then rise to power and align themselves with one of the major houses of Game of Thrones. (Disruptor Beam said 43% of players have aligned themselves with House Stark, one of the main protagonists in the story.) Players then train troops, trade goods, develop their lands and take part in political intrigue.

Facebook's social graph is a key feature of the game, where players can form alliances — or backstab — their real-life friends, but Disruptor Beam founder Jon Radoff said he didn't want a game where you just spammed your friends.

As such, Game of Thrones Ascent will be coming to other platforms where players can interact with the same game but without Facebook involved. While Radoff wouldn't confirm which directly, job postings on the Disruptor Beam website imply that an iOS iteration is in the game's future.

The third season of Game of Thrones started Sunday night on HBO, and will run for 10 episodes.

Have you played Game of Thrones Ascent on Facebook? Tell us what you think in the comments.

Playboy's New iPhone App Has No Nudity

Playboy2013-04-02 14:45:00 UTC

Playboy Magazine has a new iPhone app, but if you expect to see pictorials similar to those in print, you'll be disappointed.

The app brings exclusive content only available on the app, "best articles" from the latest issue of Playboy, original lifestyle content and "non-nude" pictorials.

"As the on-the-go extension of the Playboy brand, our new app brings the best of Playboy with original, thought-provoking and enticing bite-sized content that captures our design-driven and discernible style," said Scott Flanders, CEO of Playboy Enterprises.

Playboy's iPhone app is available for $1.99 a month, $10.99 for six months or $19.99 a year.

Those looking for uncensored Playboy issues on the go can go over to i.playboy.com, where Playboy offers a web-based iPad app. The app offers every issue of Playboy ever made, with slightly heftier prices: $8.95 for one month or $65.95 for a 12-month membership.

Sheryl Sandberg May Testify in Antitrust Case

Sheryl-sandberg2013-04-02 14:24:31 UTC

Sheryl Sandberg may need to take some time out from doing publicity for her new book later this month to testify in an ongoing antitrust case.

Bloomberg reports that the Facebook COO is scheduled to give a deposition for a case stemming from a 2011 lawsuit, which alleges that several prominent tech companies conspired to reduce competition for one another's employees in order to "fix and suppress" employee compensation.

Facebook is not one of the companies included in the lawsuit, but Sandberg's former employer Google is one of the defendants. Sandberg served as VP of global online sales and operations at Google until early 2008 when she left to join Facebook.

Sandberg is scheduled to answer questions relating to the case on April 23. Sandberg certainly wouldn't be the only big tech exec to testify in the case. Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were scheduled to give oral statements last month.

'New York Times' Ad Shows Paper on Day You Were Born

Nytimes-prudential2013-04-02 10:16:48 -0400

Add this to the list of clever display ads: Life insurance company Prudential is staging a front-page takeover of the NYTimes.com Tuesday. The takeover includes a large interactive unit above the fold that asks you to enter your birth date to see the front page of the Times on the day you were born.

To execute the ad, the Times developed an API with an index of 139 years of front pages, from 1863 to 2002, a spokesperson said. That's more than 50,000 covers in total.

The ad links to a microsite that explores lengthening lifespans and how Prudential's products can accommodate them. Share buttons encourage you to share the unit on Twitter and LinkedIn.

The ad is invitingly interactive, and compliments Prudential's message and the environment in which it appears. We only wish the covers were a bit larger so we could read the headlines.

'Draw Something' Head Leaves Zynga 1 Year After Selling Company

Zynga-vp2013-04-02 18:13:08 UTC

Zynga is parting ways with another big name employee.

Dan Porter, the man who founded OMGPOP, the gaming company behind the popular Pictionary-style game Draw Something, is leaving Zynga one year after it bought his company for $180 million. Porter's departure was first reported by BetaBeat and has since been confirmed to Mashable by Zynga.

"Developing and launching games is a team effort, and we’re proud of the great work the Zynga New York team has done with Draw Something 2," Zynga COO David Ko said in a statement. "Our follow up to the original hit is even more social and engaging, and we’re excited to get it into the hands of our players globally. We thank Dan Porter for his efforts in making the Draw Something franchise a success and wish him well in his future endeavors."

Draw Something represented Zynga's largest acquisition, but since the purchase one year ago, the game has lost much of its buzz. Zynga announced in October that it would have to write off between $85 million to $95 million of the acquisition cost in an acknowledgement that it had overpaid for the company. Meanwhile, Zynga's stock price has plummeted from more than $13 a share to just more than $3 a share now.

To make matters worse, Porter has come under fire last month for saying that Zynga copied games. He later was forced to issue a public apology, in which he claimed his comments had been misrepresented.

Porter, who served as the VP and general manager of Zynga's New York operations, will be replaced by Sean Kelly. Kelly joined Zynga in 2009 and oversees the company's mobile products.

Zynga has lost several other execs in recent months, including CFO David Wehner and the creators of Words With Friends and Zynga Poker.

3D-Printed Face Made This Man's Life Whole Again

Surgeryfor The Daily Dot 2013-04-02 14:01:32 -0400

Thanks to 3D-printing technology, Eric Moger is getting his life back.

Four years ago, doctors detected a massive tumor growing beneath the skin on his face. They successfully removed the cancerous growth, but were also forced to remove most of the entire left side of his face.

After the lifesaving procedure, the British restaurant manager had a gaping hole where his eye, cheek bone, and part of his jaw had been. Moger would have gone on to live the rest of his life with half his face missing.

Nicholas Kalavrezos—the surgeon who removed his tumor—referred Moger to Dr. Andrew Dawood, a dental surgeon and implant specialist. Dawood had previously experimented with 3D printing by recreating his patients' jaws and practicing surgical procedures on them.

With Moger, Dawood used CT and facial scans to create a facial blueprint. Using that data, the doctor was able to construct a "scaffold," a titanium jaw replacement that uses 2-inch-long rods to hold it in place.

Dawood also implanted a plastic plate inside of Moger's mouth. This would allow him to eat and drink for the first time since the surgery. Previously, Moger was fed via a tube that went directly into his stomach.

The surgeon used toughened nylon and magnets to build a removable facade.

"When I had it in my hand, it was like looking at myself in my hands," Eric Moger told the Sydney Morning Herald, referring to his new mask. "When I first put it up to my face, I couldn't believe how good it looked."

This is what Moger looked like prior the surgery. This is him with the prosthetic.

"Before, I used to have to hold my hand up to my jaw to keep my face still so I could talk properly and I would have liquid running out the side of my face if I tried to drink. When I had the first glass of water wearing the prosthetic face, nothing came out—it was amazing."

The 60-year-old British man, who got engaged prior to developing the tumor, is just glad to be getting his life back on track.

"Now I have a new face for the wedding," he noted. "I can restart my life after having it on hold for four and a half years."

Funny or Die's Steve Jobs Biopic Releases April 15

2013-04-02 15:07:00 UTC

Last month, Funny or Die announced that it would be making a film about the life of Steve Jobs called iSteve, poking fun at the number of biopics currently in the works.

The first trailer released on Tuesday, advertising an April 15 release. The 60 to 75-minute online film features comedian Justin Long (known for the "Get a Mac" commercials) as the late Apple co-founder who died in 2011.

There's not much to the trailer aside from a couple of Jobs' famous quotes and dramatic music, but we get a quick glimpse of Long in character at the end.

There are a number of films about Jobs in the works: jOBS, an independent film starring actor Ashton Kutcher as Jobs, reportedly has had its release date delayed; and Sony Pictures is producing another picture based on Walter Isaacson's authorized biography of Jobs.
