Google-doodle-2013-example-submissionVignesh By Vignesh Ramachandran2013-05-05 19:21:27 -0500

There are just five days left to vote for your favorite Google Doodle contest design, created by kids. Soon, five national finalists will be chosen, with the winning artwork featured on Google's homepage.

It's all part of the search giant's sixth-annual Doodle 4 Google design competition for K to 12 students in the United States. This year's contest asks students to redesign the homepage logo based on the theme, "My Best Day Ever..."

Out of 130,000 entries this year, the competition is now down to 10 students from the following grade groups: K to 3, 4 to 5, 6 to 7, 8 to 9 and 10 to 12. These 50 selected creations include sentimental depictions ("The day my little sister was born") to those that stretch the imagination ("A Trip to Planet Z").

You can vote up to five times (one doodle per grade group) through May 10 at 5 p.m. P.T. Once the five national finalists are chosen and announced on May 22, one national winner will be chosen.

The national winner will not only get their artwork featured on Google's iconic homepage for 24 hours on May 23, but will also will get a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for their school.

BlackBerry software chief on BB10 software updates and a focus on healthcare and financial services

During BlackBerry Live this week we got to speak with Vivek Bhardwaj, BlackBerry's Head of Software, about the future of BB10. In light of the the platform's first major software update rolling out to its devices, we asked about the plans for future releases. Bhardwaj told us that the plan is for them to come at a regular cadence of one major code update per year, with other, incremental updates for specific devices sprinkled in as needed. A particular focus is to do so while delivering devs fully realized hardware and to avoid fragmentation in the code base -- making it easier to create BB10 apps.

While he wouldn't dish details about features coming to BB10 in those updates, Bhardwaj did explain that he's working on making BB10 a platform particularly suited for use not only in cars, but also in the healthcare and financial services industries. That focus is a part of the mobile computing ethos espoused by CEO Thorsten Heins meant to have BB10 devices be users' personal, portable computing terminal that is simply plugged into a screen -- whether it's a desktop monitor, a car or somewhere else -- that delivers a uniform experience. When asked whether those screens would include TVs, Bhardwaj didn't rule it out, but he did say that home experiences weren't a priority because it's a crowded space and BB10 "is all about getting things done." As a result, the number one focus is building out a compelling automotive platform, with healthcare and financial services coming in a close second. So, folks thinking BB10 was BlackBerry betting on consumers instead of the enterprise, think again. The more things change, the more they seem to stay the same -- at least when the folks in Waterloo are involved.

Insert Coin meet Melon, a headband that'll help you learn to focus

The quantified self movement's gaining steam, with companies creating all sorts of gadgets to track our activity levels, sleeping habits and even what's going on inside our heads. Melon's an EEG headband that taps into your brain's inner workings to show you how well you maintain mental focus. We actually saw Melon's prototype predecessor last year when it was called Axio, and while this new band packs largely the same components, the design's been refined to a much thinner profile. As before, its got a trio of electrodes for sensing brainwaves, a NeuroSky chip for filtering out extraneous electrical noise and Bluetooth 4.0 for offloading data wirelessly. It sends data to iPhones (Android's in development) running the Melon app, which translates that info into a focus graph -- generally speaking, the higher the neural activity in your pre-frontal cortex, the higher your level of focus. Users then input contextual data tags like time of day, type of activity and the surrounding environmental conditions to allow them to track variables that may affect their focus.

In addition to helping users learn what affects their focus levels, the app also provides tips for improving focus and a game to help you increase your mental powers. The game is simple: you start with a plain image of a piece of paper, and as you focus on that image, it folds itself into an origami shape. While the official app is all the Melon software currently available, the company has plans to launch a free SDK to allow devs to build their own apps for the platform. Additionally, the goal is to have Melon be compatible with other biometric platforms like Nike+ and Fitbit. For now, the app is iOS only, but an Android version is scheduled to launch in a couple months.

11 Epic Graduation Falls Worth a Diploma

Graduation-fallChristine-erickson By Christine Erickson2013-05-06 00:58:22 UTC

Hang in there, seniors. The light at the end of the tunnel is just a couple exams away.

Whether you're embarking on the next step into high school, college, or this is finally the end, there is nothing sweeter than walking across that stage and taking your rightfully earned diploma.

But don't think it's all downhill from here just yet, unless you literally mean it. There's a lot of pressure that comes with graduation day. This is the final moment in which you will be judged by your entire class. The good news is that you won't ever see most of these people again. The bad news is that you might not want to if you don't pick the right shoes and watch where you're going.

Here are some cliché words of wisdom paired with YouTube's finest graduation fails. Some were planned, some unfortunately genuine, and all are worthy of a diploma.

Arduino Robot launches at Maker Faire, we go handson video

There's a new kid on the Arduino block, and it's called the Arduino Robot. Launched yesterday at Maker Faire Bay Area, it's the company's first product that extends beyond single microcontroller boards. The Roomba-like design, which we first saw in November 2011, is the result of a collaboration with Complubot. It consists of two circular boards, each equipped with Atmel's ubiquitous ATmega32u4 and connected via ribbon cable.

The bottom board is home to four AA batteries (NiMH), a pair of motors and wheels, a power connector and switch plus some infrared sensors. By default it's programmed to drive the motors and manage power. The top board features a color LCD, a microSD card slot, an EEPROM, a speaker, a compass, a knob plus some buttons and LEDs. It's programmed to control the display and handle I/O. Everything fits inside a space that's about 10cm high and 19cm in diameter.

Pre-soldered connectors and prototyping areas on each board make it easier to customize the robot platform with additional sensors and electronics. It even comes with eleven step-by-step projects and a helpful GUI right out of the box. The Arduino Robot is now on sale at the Maker Faire for $275 and will be available online in July. Take a look at our gallery below and watch our video interview with Arduino founder Massimo Banzi after the break. Arduino Robot at Maker Faire 2013 See all photos 23 Photos

Dell Ophelia USB Android stick to ship in July, priced at $100

We know that "wherefore art thou?" was about Romeo, but if your question was for (Dell's) Ophelia, then it's likely more "when art thou." The answer? July. The Android pendrive / USB computer we saw back at CES may be one of many, but distinctive thanks to its mainstream PC-maker origins. We're still lacking a lot of the specifics, other than that there's WiFi, Bluetooth, Wyse PocketCloud integration, plus, of course, HDMI and Android 4.something. There will likely be a few enterprise-friendly features too (administration tools, remote wiping) reports PC World. As usual, developers will get their hands on them first, with -- interestingly -- some cable and telecoms companies potentially stocking it too -- though no specifics at this time. So, the $100 Dell might not be the portable you'd love for this price, but maybe the USB PC finally crossing over?

Zuckerberg Delayed Instagram Deal to Watch 'Game of Thrones'

ZuckgotKris Holt for The Daily Dot 2013-05-06 21:30:24 UTC

Only Mark Zuckerberg could throw a billion-dollar deal on ice to sit down with his friends and watch Game of Thrones.

We're at least a few years away from calling the 28-year-old Facebook CEO an eccentric billionaire (because a) he's not old; and b) he hasn't thrown stacks of benjamins from a hot air balloon just yet), but this is just one of the few details about the Facebook-Instagram deal that shook up the Web last year.

Writing for Vanity Fair, Kara Swisher has a comprehensive look at how the deal went down. Instagram's cofounders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger opted to sell to Facebook—rather than take a competing offer from Twitter—because, as Systrom told Krieger, “I really like Mark, and I really like his company. And I really like what Facebook is trying to achieve.”

Swisher's is a fascinating piece detailing not just the agreement between Systrom and Zuckerberg, but the history of Instagram. If you've any interest at all in Instagram, Facebook, or Silicon Valley, it's well worth reading. Here's a look at what you might not have known about Instagram or the deal before now:

Instagram's defining feature is its filters that make photos look as though they've emerged from the '70s, giving an instant vintage feel. Systrom got the idea after his girlfriend mentioned his photos would never look as good as those taken by a friend, who ran his images through filter apps.

Twitter executive chairman Jack Dorsey (who sat next to Systrom while the latter was interning) and the company's then chief financial officer made Systrom what they believed was a formal offer to buy Instagram during drinks by a campfire. That led to a delay in the Instagram-Facebook deal closing due to an antitrust hearing. Still, nine-figure deals proposed around a campfire? Silicon Valley is so casual.

Zuckerberg and Systrom knew each other casually long before Instagram. Zuck even tried to convince Systrom to drop out of Stanford to join him at Facebook, and the pair had dinner a few times at Zuck's house after Instagram was released. That nascent familiarity perhaps helped the negotiation process last just two days, from Good Friday to Easter Sunday (we're guessing plenty of eggs were rolled at Instagram's office that weekend). The deal was announced the following day.

The best detail in Swisher's story is this one:

"Saturday, Systrom was back at Zuckerberg’s to formalize the negotiations and come to an official acquisition agreement, which they would both sign. Their back-and-forth was interrupted by a television-watching party for Game of Thrones that Zuckerberg, an avid fan, was throwing."

Billion-dollar deals clearly take a backseat to the fate of Westeros in Zuckerberg's eyes (he Likes the show on Facebook, of course). Systrom, on the other hand, was on the phone to lawyers and investors to get them to sign off on the deal. A Stark comparison in priorities for those two men on that April 2012 weekend.

Israel Says Google Recognizing Palestine Hurts Peace Hopes

Palestine-flagLorenzo-f-bicchireai By Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai2013-05-06 16:38:01 UTC

When Google changed the tagline for google.ps, its Palestinian domain, from "Palestinian Territories," to "Palestine," it stepped right into one of the world's most controversial political issues. The change, which was effective on May 1, was seen as Google's recognition of a Palestinian state.

"This is a step in the right direction, a timely step and one that encourages others to join in and give the right definition and name for Palestine instead of Palestinian Territories," Sabri Saidam, adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, told the BBC.

But officials in Israel were not as enthusiastic in embracing the change, going as far as saying the decision harms peace talks in the region.

"I think that the Google decision from the last few days is very, very problematic," Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Zeev Elkin, told Israel's Army Radio. "When a company like Google comes along and supports this line, it actually pushes peace further away, pushes away negotiations, and creates among the Palestinian leadership the illusion that in this manner they can achieve the result."

Google's decision comes months after the UN granted Palestine the status of "non-member observer state," implicitly recognizing it as a state. That change was one reason Google modified its localized search page.

"We’re changing the name 'Palestinian Territories' to 'Palestine' across our products. We consult a number of sources and authorities when naming countries. In this case, we are following the lead of the UN, ICANN, ISO [International Organization for Standardization] and other international organizations," said Nathan Tyler, a Google spokesperson, in a prepared statement.

As reported by the Jerusalem Post, Elkin took a step further and wrote a letter to Google's CEO Larry Page, pleading the company to backpedal on its decision and to meet with Israeli authorities to discuss the issue.

"Google is in essence recognizing the existence of a Palestinian state," Elkin wrote. "I would be grateful were you to reconsider this decision since it entrenches the Palestinians in their view that they can further their political aims through one-sided actions rather than through negotiating and mutual agreement."

At press time, Google's spokesperson had not responded to further questions regarding Israel's position and Google's reaction to it.

Virtual football enthusiasts excited for Madden 25 (it's technically Madden 2014 marking 25 years of the franchise) may want to head over to Amazon if they're serious about watching actual NFL games. The online retailer has an exclusive Anniversary Edition of the game up for pre-order, which comes bundled with a 17-week pass for both Madden Ultimate Team cards and NFL Sunday Ticket for computer and mobile. On top of getting all the 2013 regular season's out-of-market matches, DirecTV subscribers can snag a $10-a-month discount on the TV version (normally $225) for one year with a pro bono MAX upgrade. Joystiq notes that only 100,000 copies are up for grabs, split evenly between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. All it takes to get in on the action starting August 27th is $100 -- $40 more than the standard edition, which can net you up to $400 in total savings on the services. Nintendo partners with Best Buy so you can play unreleased Wii U games in store during E3

There's nothing more frustrating than watching a product or service get announced, then having to wait an age to try it out. Nintendo hears that, and has announced via Nintendo Direct, that during E3 week, Best Buy will have playable demos of as-yet released Wii U games in 100 stores across the US and Canada. Given that no one was likely expecting any new hardware from the firm, it's clear the gaming stalwart is looking for other ways to stir-up some interest. There's no mention of titles, so we're left to assume they'd be the games announced at the show. Either way, scratch out that week in June to make sure you find out first hand. Scrub right to the end of the video past the break to see the announcement for yourself.

Government Lab Reveals Quantum Internet Operated for 2 Years

SparkleopticThe Physics arXiv Blog for MIT Technology Review 2013-05-06 18:44:09 UTC

One of the dreams for security experts is the creation of a quantum Internet that allows perfectly secure communication based on the powerful laws of quantum mechanics.

The basic idea here is that the act of measuring a quantum object, such as a photon, always changes it. So any attempt to eavesdrop on a quantum message cannot fail to leave telltale signs of snooping that the receiver can detect. That allows anybody to send a "one-time pad" over a quantum network which can then be used for secure communication using conventional classical communication.

That sets things up nicely for perfectly secure messaging known as quantum cryptography and this is actually a fairly straightforward technique for any half decent quantum optics lab. Indeed, a company called ID Quantique sells an off-the-shelf system that has begun to attract banks and other organisations interested in perfect security.

These systems have an important limitation, however. The current generation of quantum cryptography systems are point-to-point connections over a single length of fibre, So they can send secure messages from A to B but cannot route this information onwards to C, D, E or F.

That's because the act of routing a message means reading the part of it that indicates where it has to be routed. And this inevitably changes it, at least with conventional routers. This makes a quantum Internet impossible with today's technology

Various teams are racing to develop quantum routers that will fix this problem by steering quantum messages without destroying them. We looked at one of the first last year. But the truth is that these devices are still some way from commercial reality.

Today, Richard Hughes and his team at Los Alamos National Labs in New Mexico reveal an alternative quantum Internet, which they say they've been running for two and half years. Their approach is to create a quantum network based around a hub and spoke-type network. All messages get routed from any point in the network to another via this central hub.

This is not the first time this kind of approach has been tried. The idea is that messages to the hub rely on the usual level of quantum security. However, once at the hub, they are converted to conventional classical bits and then reconverted into quantum bits to be sent on the second leg of their journey.

So as long as the hub is secure, then the network should also be secure.

The problem with this approach is scalability. As the number of links to the hub increases, it becomes increasingly difficult to handle all the possible connections that can be made between one point in the network and another.

Hughes and co say they've solved this with their unique approach which equips each node in the network with quantum transmitters—ie lasers—but not with photon detectors which are expensive and bulky. Only the hub is capable of receiving a quantum message (although all nodes can send and receiving conventional messages in the normal way).

That may sound limiting but it still allows each node to send a one-time pad to the hub which it then uses to communicate securely over a classical link. The hub can then route this message to another node using another one time pad that it has set up with this second node. So the entire network is secure, provided that the central hub is also secure.

The big advantage of this system is that it makes the technology required at each node extremely simple—essentially little more than a laser. In fact, Los Alamos has already designed and built plug-and-play type modules that are about the size of a box of matches. "Our next-generation [module] will be an order of magnitude smaller in each linear dimension," they say.

Their ultimate goal is to have one of these modules built in to almost any device connected to a fibre optic network, such as set top TV boxes, home computers and so on, to allow perfectly secure messaging.

Having run this system now for more than two years, Los Alamos are now highly confident in its efficacy.

Of course, the network can never be more secure than the hub at the middle of it and this is an important limitation of this approach. By contrast, a pure quantum Internet should allow perfectly secure communication from any point in the network to any other.

Another is that this approach will become obsolete as soon as quantum routers become commercially viable. So the question for any investors is whether they can get their money back in the time before then. The odds are that they won’t have to wait long to find out.

Man Animates Wife's Drunken Story About Tortilla Chips

Neha-prakash By Neha Prakash2013-05-06 20:43:21 UTC

If there's ever been a PSA for not drinking and joking, it's this video.

Adam Patch's wife got a little too tipsy one night and turned, like most do, into a stand-up comedian. Her subject of choice? Tortilla-chip bullying. (No, folks, even we can't make this stuff up.)

Patch recorded his wife's nonsensical, pun-filled story and turned it into a darkly hilarious animated video that really shines a light on the chip-on-chip abuse.

No news yet if Patch's wife is regretting her drunken ramblings, or if Patch has been exiled to nights on the couch for turning her joke into viral Internet gold.

Sprint closes deal to buy US Cellular spectrum, adds 420,000 new customers

Sprint was clearly hungry for capacity when it bought spectrum from US Cellular last fall, and it's at last getting its fill -- some of it, at least -- by closing the deal today. The carrier has officially taken possession of 20MHz in airwaves across Midwestern cities like Champaign, Chicago and South Bend, as well as 10MHz in St. Louis. The customer handover isn't quite as grandiose as was mentioned in November, however: Sprint is ultimately adopting 420,000 US Cellular customers, rather than the originally claimed 585,000. It should be a relatively bump-free transition, no matter who's included in the group. Sprint expects the switch to take several months, and it's keeping the US Cellular network active while customers go hunting for discounted phones.

The additional spectrum will significantly increase Sprint's network capacity and further improve the customer experience in these markets. In addition, the transaction includes approximately 420,000 U.S. Cellular customers.

Sprint and U.S. Cellular have already notified affected customers and Sprint will send them additional information on the exact timing and details of the transition which will last several months. Sprint and its Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and payLo prepaid brands are providing special offers and incentives for affected customers that significantly reduce the cost of acquiring a new device to transition from the U.S. Cellular network. In many cases, affected customers can switch from their current device to a similar or better Sprint or prepaid device for little or no cost and with a wide variety of contract or non-contract plans. Affected customers will not be charged an Early Termination Fee when switching their service. During the months-long transition period, U.S. Cellular's network will remain active and affected customers may continue to use U.S. Cellular for their wireless service while evaluating their options. For more information, affected customers can call 800-216-7023 or visit www.sprint.com/uscellular.

"We know how important good value, network performance and excellent service are to these customers and Sprint has a wide portfolio of competitive devices, prepaid options, an improved 3G and growing 4G LTE network experience, and unlimited data, text and voice plans to meet their wireless needs," said Paget Alves, Sprint chief sales officer.
