When it feels like all the photos in your social feeds have been altered by a filter or perfected with editing software, a moment illuminated by completely natural light can be a welcome change of scene.

We asked for your best photos taken using only natural light as part of the Mashable Photo Challenge. We received just under 900 submissions, a new record for the Photo Challenge, making it difficult to narrow it down to these 21. Our guest curator, Santiago PerezGrovas, chose a few of his favorites based on composition and creativity.

Check out the top pictures above, and check out the rest of the amazing submissions here.

If your photo wasn't featured this time, try again in our next challenge: far, far away.

ACLU: Carriers Leaving Android Users Susceptible to Malware

AndroidLorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai2013-04-18 19:31:38 UTC

In a world where malware targeting Android phones is used more and more everyday, security updates are fundamental to keep users away from malware and hackers. That's why the American Civil Liberties Union has filed a complaint on Tuesday, accusing mobile carriers of failing to distribute updates and fixes to their Android phones.

In its 16-page complaint filed with the Federal Trade Commission, the civil rights group pointed its finger at AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, accusing the companies of leaving users vulnerable by providing them with phones running unpatched and outdated versions of the Android operating system, which "rarely receive software security updates."

"The problem isn’t that consumers aren’t installing updates, but rather, that updates simply aren’t available," wrote Chris Soghoian, the ACLU principal technologist and senior policy analyst, in a blog post. "Although Google’s engineers regularly fix software flaws in the Android operating system, these fixes aren’t packaged up and pushed to consumers by the wireless carriers and their handset manufacturer partners."

And that's because the majority of Android phones on the market don't run Google's native Android version but a carrier's customized version. The ACLU notes that these are effectively unique operating systems that need their own updates, and only the companies that modified the original Android source code can issue those updates. And most of the time, they either never do that or do it months later.

Moreover, according to the complaint, the carriers don't even warn the users about these flaws and vulnerabilities. And these failures, according to the ACLU, amount to "deceptive and unfair business practices."

If the carriers can't or are unwilling to issue security updates more frequently, the ACLU is asking the FTC to compel carriers to give their users a way to terminate their contracts early — without having to pay the usual termination fee — or allow them to exchange their insecure phones for newer ones, or to give them a full refund.

In February, the FTC ordered HTC America to patch security vulnerabilities in their phones. But in a tweet, Soghoian notes that with this complaint "we don't ask the FTC to force the carriers to issue updates, merely to tell consumers about flaws."

For Soghoian, putting pressure on the carriers to improve their security practices should be part of the government's commitment to improve the country's cybersecurity. "Cybersecurity threats are real, and improving security and privacy should be an important priority for the government," he wrote. "We think there are plenty of things the government can do to protect the computers and networks that consumers, businesses and government agencies depend upon without violating civil liberties. Investigating the wireless carriers and their role in smartphone security updates would be a great first step."

Forget Google Reader. Here's Star Wars Reader

Chris Taylor2013-04-19 00:55:25 UTC

Still bummed about the fact that Google is killing its RSS feed service, Google Reader, on July 1? Us too.

But there are other ways to read the headlines from your favorite websites. We've covered a bunch of Google Reader replacements — including Feedly, which now says it has gained 3 million new users since the Google Reader shutdown was announced in March.

But none of those replacements have quite the pizzazz of StarRSS, a feed reader based on the opening crawl from every Star Wars movie. With John Williams' famous music blaring in the background, even the most mundane of headlines looks exciting. (Unless it's a headline about a taxation dispute involving the Trade Federation, that is.)

For example, to see what Mashable's RSS feed looks like in Star Wars format, click here. Click on any headline as it blasts past into space to go straight to that story. (And replace the Mashable part of the URL to make any other site's feed look Star Wars-y.)

StarRSS is the brainchild of a user at the online open source software collective GitHub known only as fotcorn. It's a simple piece of JavaScript code using assets supplied by another GitHub user, Artem Avetisyan.

We doubt those materials are open source, exactly — as the Register recently pointed out, the majority of stuff on GitHub is released without regard to license. So enjoy the power of this fully operational RSS reader while it lasts.

FBI Criticizes Internet Vigilantes in Boston Case

Fbi-redditAlex Fitzpatrick2013-04-18 18:51:26 -0400

Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Richard DesLauriers said during a press conference Thursday that the footage the FBI released showing its two suspects in the Boston bombing case is the only legitimate footage available.

"Other photos should not be deemed credible," he added.

DesLauriers's words were effectively aimed at Reddit and 4chan, where some users have been attempting to identify suspects in crowdsourced images and video. Reddit has since deleted its earlier efforts.

Their work was almost immediately criticized as a breach of privacy and due process, not to mention the overtones of racism and xenophobia. That criticism escalated after the New York Post gave the front page treatment to an image Reddit and 4chan users thought showed individuals involved in the attack.

"This is vigilantism, and it's only the illusion that what we do online is not as significant as what we do offline that allows this to go on," wrote The Atlantic's Alexis Madrigal. "Imagine if people were standing around in Boston pointing fingers at people in photographs and (roughly) accusing them of terrorism."

Even before the FBI press conference, some Redditors began voicing doubts about the subreddit devoted to identifying suspects, r/FindBostonBombers. "LOL, everyone was 100% wrong," wrote one Redditor before deleting the comment. "I feel bad for Blue Robe Guy," wrote another, referring to the nickname Redditors gave to a man in the crowd that became one of their favorite suspects. "He looked like a dad waiting for his kid. Plus, he wasn't even wearing a robe."

Following DesLauriers' comments, a moderator of r/FindBostonBombers said "at this point in time the only photographs that are allowed to be posted in this subreddit are images that may contain the FBI's two suspects" and that "all others will be deleted."

Redditors have since concentrated their efforts on the FBI's footage, perhaps even determining the types of hats worn by the FBI's suspects.

What role should Reddit, 4chan and other social media users have in assisting the investigation, if any? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Sexy Curved OLED TVs Coming Later This Year From LG

Lg-curved-oledCharlie White2013-04-18 20:14:34 UTC

Those ultrathin, super-contrasty and tack-sharp OLED screens are one of the new darlings of the television world. Some of the newest curved OLED TVs debuted at CES 2013 in January, but so far, when it comes to buying such a rounded screen for your own living room, there's been a boatload of talk and no delivery dates ... until now, in a vague sort of way.

After LG PR manager Hung W.K. Shin told TrustedReviews about how "we will see the first curved TV devices on the market soon," LGs vice president of home entertainment took it a step further. Agreeing that curved TVs will be "another trend," he spilled the beans, revealing that the company is preparing lots of curved TVs. He's not talking just 55-inch screens like those shown at CES 2013, but bigger curved OLED displays as well.

Then, he delivered the money quote: "Curved TVs are coming in the second half of this year."

Then, he delivered the money quote: "Curved TVs are coming in the second half of this year." That's more information than any electronics manufacturer has revealed about its plans to release these sexy, curvy screens. The big unknown with this statement is where will these new TVs be available? Many of the newly-released flat OLED TVs have seen limited availability at first, mostly rolled out in South Korea before hitting the world market.

The curved screens are said to enhance viewing angles (perhaps for the person sitting directly in front of them, says I), and give the viewer a more immersive experience. You want immersive? Perhaps LG is considering an 80-inch screen, which certainly is immersive, a fact for which I can vouch for from personal experience. Imagine that in a curved form factor.

Talk of immersion and viewing angles might sound like marketing fluff, but just look at that photo above, and you tell me if those curved screens aren't seriously cool. Take it a step further, and imagine OLED as wallpaper, curving around corners and letting you see whatever you want on any walls and services. Make it all 4K resolution and you'll really have my attention.

Sure, that's years if not decades away, but we can dream, can't we? Tell us your TV dreams in the comments section below.

Hiring Experts Reveal Resume Pet Peeves

Resume-career-fairBusinessNewsDaily 2013-04-18 19:24:21 UTC

Crafting a resume that is unique and impressive is the goal of every job seeker. However, there is no one blueprint to follow in this process. Despite that lack of guidance, one surefire way to prevent your resume from making the circular file is to avoid some of these most common resume pet peeves of hiring managers.

Nondescript Objectives

Your objective should never be, "I want to work at X company in Y role." That's a no-brainer, the act of submitting an application indicates interest in the role. What do you want to do with your career? What do you want to bring to a company? If you can't come up with something unique and engaging, leave the objective off of your resume all together. — Bethany Perkins, head recruiter for Software Advice

Small Fonts

For most fonts, size 10 is the absolute smallest, and even then it might be too small, depending on the font you are using. If your reader needs to take out his/her reading glasses to read your resume, you have already aggravated them and your resume is heading for the trash can. — Michelle Riklan, founder and managing director at Riklan Resources

Formatting Problems

Avoid using dated Microsoft packages for your Word doc resume, as new systems don't always read the document accurately, with many resumes coming through unreadable at the worst or unaligned at the best. — Chris Delaney, founder of Employment King

Colored Resume Paper

In an effort to make their resumes stand out, some job seekers are using colored paper to stand out. This might actually work in a few, very few, instances, but I would almost always advise against it unless you are in a creative industry and you're resume is amazing. — Paul Chittenden, co-founder of JobKaster

Not Following Instructions

I just hired an assistant and had to review more than 250 resumes and cover letters for this position. My ad asked to not send a generic cover letter and to visit our website and explain why their skills are a good fit for us. Seventy percent of the time they'd shoot off a non-customized resume, and 90% of the time they wouldn't include a cover letter. Because of this lack of following direction it weeded out a huge portion of applicants. — Julie Weinhouse, principal at HERO Entertainment Marketing

Using the Wrong Tense

I get frustrated when people do not have their past job responsibilities in past tense. You are no longer doing that job; it is imperative to make sure your resume reflects that. — Rachel Bass, executive recruiter at Windsor Resources

Not Listing Details

Don't skip the starting and ending dates for each position you've held. Employers are looking to see your employment continuity, tenure and commitment. If that information is missing on one resume and it's included on another candidate's resume who has similar skills and experience, I'll move them into the "consider" pile and the incomplete resume into the "not consider" pile. — Arlene Vernon, president of HRx

A Bad Resume Name

People should name their resume by their first and last name. A lot of times candidates will send in resumes named "espence_résumé91.pdf, resume2013, or even revision5resume. I'm glad you have revised your resume five times, but it would be great if version six had just your first and last name. — Pete Juratovic, president of Clikzy Creative

No Photos, Please

With the widespread use of social media sites like LinkedIn, there is no need to add pictures to resumes. Use the space for more detail. — Mark Frietch, president of Tac Services

This 'Goodnight Moon' Remake Will Ruin Your Favorite Children's Book

Neha Prakash2013-04-18 20:39:19 UTC

Remember when your mom used to tuck you into bed? You'd be all snuggly and warm and she'd read to you that sweet story "Goodnight Moon."

There would be red balloons and cows jumping over the moon, mice and mittens and hushing old ladies. You would drift off to a blissful sleep dreaming of candy and ponies and rainbows, all because of that amazing little bedtime tale.

This is not the same story.

Gritty Reboots works its extra creepy magic in this sinister and somber version of the book, where mice and old ladies in the corner are much more horror movie-esque than pleasant children's yarn appropriate. It's truly the adult version of the beloved story that will surely send shivers up your spine and make you start needing your mommy before bedtime again.

And in case you've forgotten the original, cheery tale, here's an animated version, courtesy of The Party Animal Videos.
