Samsung Galaxy S 4 Delayed on T-Mobile

Samsung1Stan Schroeder2013-04-24 00:38:52 -0700

It seems HTC One will not be the only Android flagship that suffered from the delay flu this year, at least on some carriers. T-Mobile has announced that Samsung Galaxy S 4 will be available on April 29 instead of April 24 as was originally planned.

"We know customers are really looking forward to getting their new Samsung Galaxy S 4 soon. However, due to an unexpected delay with inventory deliveries, the Galaxy S 4 will not be available on www.T-Mobile.com as planned on Wednesday, April 24. Instead, online availability is expected to begin on Monday, April 29. We apologize for any inconvenience and are working with Samsung to deliver the device to T-Mobile customers as soon as possible," wrote T-Mobile in a statement.

The device was originally slated to become available at T-Mobile's retail stores on May 1, and that date hasn't changed.

As far as other carriers go, things are currently unchanged. The Galaxy S 4 will be coming to AT&T on April 30, Sprint will get it on April 27, and Verizon still doesn't have an exact date of availability.

Can 'Tetris' Cure Lazy Eye?

TetrisChelsea Stark2013-04-23 21:35:06 UTC

The endlessly addictive Tetris may be good for the treatment of lazy eye, according to a study released by McGill University scientists. The act of following Tetris pieces down the screen causes both eyes to work together, the Montreal-based team wrote in Current Biology.

The tests were conducted with a special pair of goggles that made subjects play games for about an hour each day, first with the affected eye covered, then with both eyes uncovered.

Lazy eye, medically known as amblyopia, is when one eye doesn't develop properly; the symptoms are that both eyes often don't point in the same direction, and the affected eye will squint. Traditionally, eye doctors would patch the stronger eye to allow the weaker one to catch up, but if future studies can replicate these results, patching may not be necessary.

The McGill scientists conducted their limited trial with 18 adults, so the study is somewhat preliminary. But the BBC reports efforts to replicate the study, especially with child subjects, are underway.

Children are more commonly treated with the patching technique. What kid wouldn't want their doctor to order them to play more video games?

The BBC quotes Dr. Robert Hess who says any number of video games could be used in treatment instead of Tetris.

"When we get the two eyes working together, we find the vision improves," Hess said. "It's much better than patching, much more enjoyable, it's faster and it seems to work better."

What do you think of the findings of this study? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Study Finds Voice-to-Text Apps Don't Increase Driver Safety

Texting-drivingAndrea Smith2013-04-24 00:00:23 UTC

In an effort to be a safer driver, many people, myself included, have started using voice-to-text mobile apps like Siri to keep two hands on the steering wheel.

However, a new study by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute finds using voice-to-text apps to send and receive text messages while driving don't increase driver safety.

Christine Yager, who headed up the research, tells Mashable there were no distinguishable differences between manual texters and voice texters.

"We did not find any differences between manual texting and the two voice-to-text apps that we tested in terms of driver response time and the amount of time looking at the forward roadway."

The study [PDF] is the first to compare voice-to-text and manual texting on a handheld device on the road.

Researchers — testing participants driving an actual vehicle on a closed course — had drivers use one of two mobile voice-to-text apps, Siri for iPhone and Vlingo for Android. They first asked the drivers to go through the course without any mobile phone use. Participants then drove the course three more times, once using each of the two voice-to-text applications, and one texting manually on a phone.

Yager says there was no difference between the texting methods that were used; the manual texting and both voice texting apps were equally as distracting.

The goal of the study, she says, is not to say don't use Siri, but to caution and educate drivers about the dangers of texting while driving. (We've seen numerous stories of drivers who've lost control of their car while texting.)

The study shows even formulating and dictating a message takes concentration away from the driving task at hand. "The amount of time that drivers spent looking at the roadway ahead was significantly less when they were texting, no matter which texting method was used."

Yager says if a texting driver is watching the road less often, then that driver is less able to take action when faced with something like a road hazard or a pedestrian.

The real issue may be that drivers seem to believe they’re being more careful when they use the voice-to-text apps even though they appear to offer no real safety advantage over manual texting.

The study found "drivers felt less safe when they were texting, but felt safer when using a voice-to-text application than when texting manually." So, even though we feel like we're doing the right thing by using an app, driving performance suffered with both methods.

And it's not just texting that distracts drivers. A California court ruled last month that checking GPS maps on your phone while driving is a violation of the state’s distracted driving law.

The new study is published in part to raise awareness during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

See 'Man of Steel' a Day Early — via Walmart

Man_of_steelStan Schroeder2013-04-24 11:06:11 UTC

Superman fans who want to see "Man of Steel" one day early can do so at Walmart, which has partnered with Warner Bros to sell tickets for an advance screening of the movie.

The tickets will become available May 18 on 8AM ET in more than 3,700 Walmart stores, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The special screening will take place on June 13 — that's one day before the movie's official premiere.

“Walmart’s premiere of Man of Steel once again proves we have the ambition and studio partnerships to develop unique retail programs that give our customers access to the movies they love,” said Walmart U.S. senior vp entertainment Laura Phillips in a statement.

The offer marks the first time that a movie has partnered with a big box store in this manner. While Walmart doesn't get a cut of the ticket sales, it has an extra interest in grabbing the attention of Superman fans — merchandise. The retail chain will start selling "Man of Steel" related products, including t-shirts and electronics, on April 28.

Focus Twist Turns Your iPhone Into a Lytro Camera

Emily Price2013-04-24 09:24:46 +1000

A new mobile app called Focus Twist mimics the experience of Lytro’s focus-shift technology on your iPhone, allowing you to change the focal point of a photo after snapping a shot.

To create a photo, the app captures a number of different images of the same scene, focusing on a different object in each one. Once completed, you’re able to tap on different parts of the image – much like you can with an image captured with the Lytro camera – to change the focus.

Finished images can be shared on Twitter, as well as with the Focus Twist community. Images are shared as links to Focus Twist's website, where visitors can interact with them. Check out an image I took here.

At $1.99, the app is a lot less expensive than a Lytro camera, but it’s also less effective. Since the camera is capturing several images to create the effect rather than one, objects tend to move slightly in the finished product when you tap on the screen — not exactly a seamless experience. Using a tripod can help minimize the issue.

Focus Twist is available now in the App Store.

Twitter Is Working on Two-Factor Authentication, Report Says

PadlockAnita Li2013-04-24 06:12:59 UTC

Twitter is currently testing two-factor authentication, and plans to roll it out to users soon, according to a report.

The microblogging network is conducting internal tests before gradually debuting the security measure site-wide, Wired reported Tuesday night.

Also known as "two-step verification," two-factor authentication prevents fraud by forcing users to provide two pieces of information that will verify their identity. Bank customers, for example, must provide both a physical card and PIN number.

The reports come just after The Associated Press' Twitter account (using the handle @AP) was hacked earlier Tuesday. A tweet sent from the account falsely alleged that there were two explosions in the White House, and that U.S. President Barack Obama had been injured. Hackers called the Syrian Electronic Army took credit for the incident.

Calls for Twitter to enforce two-factor authentication were swift and strong, with many commentators — including Mashable's Lance Ulanoff — saying the security measure is necessary to prevent further hacking incidents.

Back in February, Twitter posted a software engineering job related to product security. It listed designing and developing user-facing security features "such as multifactor authentication and fraudulent login detection" as part of the position's opportunities.

For its part, Google also has an option to apply two-factor authentication. When signing in, users must enter their username and password — but in addition, Google will send them a security code via text, voice call or mobile app, which they then must enter when prompted.

Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This VW YouTube Pre-Roll Ad Skips Itself

Todd Wasserman2013-04-23 15:38:10 UTC

Volkswagen illustrates its DSG Tiptronic Transmission's automatic transmission with a YouTube ad that automatically skips itself.

The ad, aimed at Brazilian consumers and supporting the VW Fusca, lasts for 5 seconds — the standard for a YouTube preroll — and then shows an unrelated video. The transmission, which is differentiated from an automatic transmission by its ability to let the driver manually shift, was developed by Porsche, a VW unit.

By now, a Tiptronic transmission (also known as a "manumatic transmission") isn't necessarily novel, but the way that VW is drawing attention to it is.
