Lenovo ThinkPad S3 and S5 tease new aluminum design, to feature

Starting to get bored of the ThinkPad's classic look but not keen on the Edge series? Then we have good news for you! Earlier today we received a couple of photos that show off two upcoming Lenovo Ultrabooks: the 13-inch ThinkPad S3 (codename "Labatt") and the 15-inch ThinkPad S5 ("Guinness"). As you can see above and after the break, both aluminum laptops feature a new "floating design" that might have taken a page out of Samsung and Vizio's book: shaving off the front outer edges of the bottom side to create that slim and floating illusion. Also, these will apparently come with either a black or silver lid.

Some folks on Sina Weibo have received other teaser photos of the ThinkPad S5, with one confirming the presence of JBL stereo speakers. The funny thing is Chinese website Yesky reported on a charity auction that actually sold limited editions of the S3 and S5 earlier this month, but those unannounced Ultrabooks went under everyone else's radar. If you're curious, Yesky speculates that a launch is due in China at the end of this month, but you'll have to stay tuned for the prices and specs.

Google Glass Stole the Show at Google I/O 2013

Google-glass-io Me-yay By Pete Pachal2013-05-17 21:58:09 UTC

Google made a lot of announcements in its marathon keynote to kick off Google I/O on Wednesday, but its most buzzed-about product was almost a no-show at the event. Google Glass barely got a mention, even though this is the first I/O where the tiny wearable computer is actually in developers' hands.

The glaring omission didn't stop Glass from stealing the show for the rest of the conference, though. Day 2 of I/O was packed with sessions on Glass, including one where official Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr apps made their debut. The sessions themselves garnered the kind of lineups usually reserved Lady Gaga tickets. Many developers were walking around wearing Glass, but it was the looks of jealousy from the Glass-less that underscored just how much interest there is in Google's head-mounted gadget.

That interest is now coming from even more circles, including the U.S. government, and rightly so. After my experience at I/O, I'm more convinced than ever that Glass — and products like it — won't just be a fad. Even when I was within a couple of blocks from the conference in tech-heavy San Francisco, people were stopping me to ask me about Glass, usually with enthusiasm.

If you search the hashtag #throughglass on Twitter, you can see a fire hose of content being shared through glass, and even more on Google+. Developers at the conference with the units couldn't shut up about them. About the only one not talking about Glass — at least in a major way — is Google.

That's weird. Forget those cool new maps; Glass is Google's big breakthrough gadget that everyone wants to know about. I suppose Google wants developers to take the Glass ball for a while, preferring to sit back and watch what emerges from its foray into the wearables space. That makes a little sense.

It's also the wrong thing to do right now. Glass is here, and it's the most-talked-about gadget of the year. It's impossible for Glass to "lay low." Worse, Google's muted approach to it at I/O lets others lead the conversation. While developers are excited, a whole lot of people are concerned.

From privacy advocates to social commentators screaming "Glasshole!" (it's happened to me), Glass detractors are starting to speak louder (or their voices just seem louder) now that Google's leaned back. Instead, it should be getting out ahead of the conversation on Glass, reminding people of its potential benefits, and that virtually the same privacy/social concerns already exist with smartphones.

It's easy to wrap yourself in a conference of like-minded geeks, all excited about your new toy. But Google shouldn't forget that there's a whole world of onlookers who don't really understand Glass and what it can do. They're curious and maybe even excited, but considering how often Glass wearers hear the question "Are you looking at porn?" some serious educating is in order.

Having used Glass for the past few weeks, I can say the potential of wearable technology is real, but I worry that Google's unorthodox approach to Glass' release, debuting a sort of "beta" months before the consumer product, might inadvertently let detractors drive the conversation.

Google Glass was a showstopper last year, and it's the show this year. But this is a show in need of a host. Google, it's time to step up to the mic.

Google I/O 2013: What We've Learned

Ryan By Ryan Lytle2013-05-17 17:40:21 UTC

As Google's annual developer conference, Google I/O, nears the end, it's time to take a look back at some of the biggest announcements the company made. The event kicked off with a 3.5-hour keynote which Mashable Editor-in-Chief Lance Ulanoff noted solidified Google as "the world's most powerful and important company."

While there was no major sky-diving presentation that marked the Google Glass demo at Google I/O 2012, there were plenty of announcements that made consumers and developers alike eager to get their hands on new updates and products.

To wade through all the announcements and news coming out of Google I/O, Mashable is hosting a Google+ Hangout today at 2pm ET on its Google+ page. Join Ulanoff, Tech Editor Pete Pachal and Tech Reporter Emily Price as they discuss a range of topics from the new Google Maps to the redesigned Google+ platform.

Do you have questions or comments about Google I/O? Leave your thoughts in the comments below and we'll try to address them during the Hangout.

Instabeat Is Google Glass and Nike FuelBand for Swimmers

Lorenzo-f-bicchireai By Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai2013-05-17 19:30:50 UTC

Wearable gizmos are the next frontier in the world of technology. And fitness trackers like Fitbit or Nike+ FuelBand already give runners a great way to track their workouts. But what about swimmers? Until now, they've been left out of the gadget tracker fad. But Instabeat, a wearable accessory for swimmer's goggles, might change that.

Think of a mix between Google Glass and a Nike+ FuelBand and you get Instabeat.

Instabeat is a device that attaches directly to a swimmer's goggles and displays, in real time, his or her heart rate, calories, laps and flip turns. Instabeat is adjustable to any pair of goggles and after the swim can be connected via USB to a computer to display the swimmer's results and track them on a dashboard.

Launched at CES 2013, Hind Hobeika, the founder of the startup behind Instabeat, has turned to Indiegogo to fund the first version of the gadget. In just a few days, the crowd-sourcing campaign had met its goal of $35,000, and there's still more than a month to go. You can get an Instabeat with a donation of $139.

To learn more about Instabeat, check out the video above.

Olympia Circuits shows Arduino datalogger and Arno AddOns at Maker Faire 2013

Olympia Circuits is best known for its Arno board and Arno Shield, which are designed to ease the Arduino learning curve by providing a bevy of pre-wired sensors and controls along with detailed instructions for several DIY projects. The company announced a couple of new products at Maker Faire this past weekend: the Arno Digital RGB Add-On and the SODA HE-1.0 Arduino datalogger. With the former, your Arno simply gains three RGB LEDs, while the latter stands for "Simple, Open Data Acquisition, High Efficiency." It's an Arduino board with screw terminals designed around Atmel's ATmega32u4 that features a real-time clock (RTC) with battery backup, a high-precision ADC and a microSD card slot. The RTC can either wake the entire board or trigger an interrupt at set intervals, which makes the board very power efficient when used in the field. Olympia Circuits will be updating its website with more info shortly (including availability and pricing). Building Solar in Spain Instead of Germany Could Save Billions

Building-solar Kevin Bullis for MIT Technology Review 2013-05-17 16:22:58 UTC

Building solar and wind projects in the wrong place is wasting billions of dollars in Europe.

Siemens says it would make sense to build solar power plants in sunny countries in Europe rather than in cloudy ones. And wind turbines should be built in windy places.

These blindingly obvious suggestions run contrary to what’s actually happening. For example, a solar panel in Spain generates about twice as much electricity as the same-size solar panel in Germany because the sun shines on it more. But last year nearly half of all solar panels installed in Europe were installed in Germany, and only a small fraction were installed in Spain (see "The Great German Energy Experiment").

Siemens calculates that if you were to install solar panels and wind turbines where the natural resources are best, and then string power lines to convey the power to where it’s needed, you could save about $60 billion dollars by 2030 because you could install fewer of them. That savings figure accounts for the cost of the power lines (see "Supergrids").

Europe isn't the only place where solar is taking off in strange places. One of the major markets for solar power in the U.S. is New Jersey, which gets far less sun than the southwest U.S., but has policies that favor solar power.

The last few years have been a tumultuous time for LightSquared, with the company's LTE plans facing one hurdle after another that eventually led to a bankruptcy filing. It looks like at least one company is now looking to buy its most valuable asset, though, with Bloomberg reporting that Dish Network Chairman Charlie Ergen has put a $2 billion offer on the table for the company's wireless spectrum. That's yet to be confirmed by either party, and Bloomberg reports that the offer is a so-called stalking horse bid, which could still let others put in a higher offer of their own. As Bloomberg also notes, this all comes at the same time that Dish is looking to buy Sprint for over $25 billion, both of which would need regulatory approval before going through.

NBA Star J.R. Smith: 'I'm Not Worried About Instagram'

Jr-smith-and-rihanna Sam-laird By Sam Laird2013-05-17 20:27:46 UTC

With his New York Knicks locked in a back-and-forth NBA playoff showdown against the Indiana Pacers, struggling offensive specialist and enfant terrible of the social web J.R. Smith has a message for haters.

Here it is:

That came in response to an Instagram rant the singer Rihanna reportedly posted in response to a follower's comment on this photo. After Rihanna and Smith were photographed partying together recently in New York, the commenter blamed her for Smith's poor post-season performance. To which Rihanna responded:

"F*** you and your wack ass team! Nobody don't want that desert thirsty ass n****!! He f***in up because his ass be hungover from clubbing every night during the playoffs!! So your issue ain't with rasshole me"

Well OK then, Rihanna!

Indeed, Smith's playoff stats have been pretty rough, prompting multiple questions about his off-the-court regimen. His struggles have even spawned the excellent Twitter account @DidJRSmithMiss, which chronicles his every attempt, then posts game recaps such as this one:

Smith, for the uninitiated, is no stranger to antics on Twitter and Instagram. Here's a brief recap from just the past four months:

Two weeks ago, he tweeted out an "Official NBA Bandwagon Transferral Form" for fans critical of his play amid rumors of excessive partying.

In March, he shared this incriminating photo of a polka dot dress shirt sported by Knicks coach Mike Woodson, along with the hashtag #Top5WorstShirtsIveSeenInMyLife.

In February, a series of Twitter direct messages were leaked in which Smith rather — ahem — directly asks a female follower whose town he's visiting for a road game: "You trying to get the pipe?" After that exchange made the rounds online, Smith responded to the world by Instagramming a photo from ... an actual pipe store.

In January, he shot a viral Twitter zinger at Kim Kardashian ex and Brooklyn Net Kris Humphries.

Stay gold, J.R. Smith. Stay gold.

Does Tumblr Lose It's Cool If It's Acquired?

David-karp-tumblr-getty Cmac By Christina Warren2013-05-17 22:27:41 UTC

Mashable OP-ED

In the news business, when you start seeing enough reports about something, it usually means that at least part of those reports are true. That's why the media and tech worlds are in such a tizzy today, with multiple reports surfacing that Yahoo is close to acquiring Tumblr for as much as $1 billion.

Now even more reports are starting to suggest that Google, Facebook and even Microsoft are all also showing interest in the microblogging service.

It makes sense that acquisition talks are circling around Tumblr. The company has taken more than $125 million in venture funding since 2007 and investors want to see a return on that investment. Meanwhile, Tumblr continues to try to find itself a business model — including native mobile advertising — without alienating its users.

So for me the question isn't if Tumblr is close to being acquired — clearly talks at some level are taking place. It isn't even a question about whether Tumblr is worth $1 billion — I think the service is easily worth that much, just on the strength of its product and its core user base.

No, for me the question for me is whether or not an acquisition will hurt Tumblr's image as the place where millennials (to use a word that I really wish we could retire) invest much of their time and energy online.

You know how there are some people that just ooze coolness? No matter what they do, what they wear or how they act, they are just cool. You can usually identify that person before she even opens her mouth.

Web sites and services are like that too. From virtually the day in launched in February 2007, Tumblr has had the cool factor. When I signed up for Tumblr in 2007 (though my blog only goes back to 2008 and I only started actively using it in 2009), it was because every cool early adopter and on-the-cutting-edge person I knew online was talking about Tumblr.

From its interface to its company culture to the people that populate its world, Tumblr is just cool.

That's why Tumblr users stay on the site longer than Facebook users spend on Facebook. That's why movie studios, fashion brands and even the White House all want to be on the platform.

It's also why the potential of an acquisition has the Tumblr community worried. Especially if that company is Yahoo.

Before Marissa Mayer, Yahoo was the place great startups went to die. Flickr, Delicious, Upcoming, Fire Eagle — even GeoCities (if we want to go way back) — foundered or were shut down under Yahoo.

Mayer is hoping to change that — acquiring 10 startups since joining the company as CEO in July 2012. Most of Mayer's acquisitions thus far have been based around talent or technology, which means it will take more time to see the impact those acquisitions have on new or existing Yahoo products. Yahoo has also invested in its existing products — from email, to Flickr to the new Yahoo Weather app for iOS — hoping to prove to users that it can change and be a place where useful apps and services still exist.

But beyond being a place that great startups go to die, Yahoo has also had to fight a reputation of being uncool. Like AOL, the company has hundreds of millions of visitors and email users — but it's not cool. Cool people don't use Yahoo for email — they use Gmail. Cool people don't watch video on Yahoo — they do YouTube, Hulu or some of those Megavideo clones we're not supposed to publicize. Cool people don't read the news on Yahoo — they visit Mashable, Buzzfeed and Twitter.

(And to be clear, I'm generalizing here. Just because you still use your @yahoo.com email address I'm not saying you're uncool - just your email service.)

That's the challenge with making an acquisition of a company like Tumblr that has not only a very loyal (and very vocal user base), but a company culture that is very much associated with its greater brand.

Buying Tumblr won't make Yahoo cool overnight and if done incorrectly, it could actually harm the image, credibility and "cool" factor Tumblr currently has in spades.

If Yahoo — or any company — acquires Tumblr — it has to do so with a full understanding of the company culture and the relationship between the service and the users.

More than any other major web service, Tumblr has a symbiotic relationship with its users. The users are the content. Liking and reblogging content is currency in Tumblr. It's what makes the ecosystem work. That relationship is actually unique and crucial to understanding how any acquisition of the company could move forward.

Any disruption to that relationship has to be done carefully and with a full understanding that if things change too much, users will go elsewhere.

Let's not forget that one of the main reasons Tumblr was able to grow as fast as it did was because the Tumblr for older millennials (like myself), LiveJournal, was ruined by its fist acquirer, Six Apart.

Six Apart was a cool company and at the time, the acquisition seemed like it made a lot of sense. Within a year, however, it was clear that the new owners didn't understand or respect the culture that had developed with users. The one-to-one relationship users used to feel with the employees, administrators and volunteers evaporated.

When Six Apart then sold LiveJournal to a Russian company in 2007, it was just one more blow to the user base. LiveJournal still exists but the community and communities around it have largely disappeared and migrated to other platforms and services — including Tumblr.

Fortunately, not all acquisitions with that have a vocal and unique company and user culture go badly. Last year, Facebook acquired Instagram. At the time, many users (including myself) were worried that the service would be "ruined" by Facebook.

A year later, my fears were unrealized as the service has remained largely untouched and for many of us, better than ever.

Facebook did this by letting the team largely remain independent. Instagram's Facebook integration is certainly more robust and there was that whole Twitter spat — but by and large, the team runs as its own entity. Another key point is that the team — by and large — hasn't left Instagram in the wake of the acquisition. Most of the team members I know are still working on the Instagram team and have no plans to leave. That's important too.

While Tumblr arguably needs more structure within the organization — that doesn't necessarily mean that product, design and editorial teams now need to start reporting to different outside groups or start routing their strategy in a different way. David Karp should still be the person making the big decisions about Tumblr — not Marissa Mayer, Steve Ballmer, Larry Page or Mark Zuckerberg.

A successful Tumblr acquisition — at least from the user perspective — would be one that leaves Tumblr as its own entity and then partners in areas (such as ad delivery, ad inventory and even backend infrastructure) that make sense. That was Amazon's strategy with Zappos and to date, it seems to have gone extremely well.

A Tumblr acquisition doesn't have to ruin its cool — but it does have to take place the right way. This isn't a normal company, it's a company users have a strong relationship with and its a company where image and personality are paramount. Keeping that in check is crucial to any future business deals.

Would you be less likely to use or visit Tumblr if Yahoo bought it? Let us know in the comments.

Air Force Expects iPad Deployment to Save $50 Million Over 10 Years

Air-force-ipads Doug Drinkwater for TabTimes 2013-05-17 21:38:53 UTC

The U.S. Air Force is expecting to save a serious amount of cash as a result of deploying 18,000 iPads.

With the iPads brought in to replace heavy, paper-bound flight manuals, a spokesman for the Air Force's Air Mobility Command has said that the deployment will save $750,000 per year on fuel alone and "well over $50 million" in total costs over the next 10 years.

"We're saving about 90 pounds of paper per aircraft and limiting the need for each crew member to carry a 30 to 40 pound paper file," Major Brian Moritz, manager of AMC's electronic flight bag program, when speaking to The Street.

"It adds up to quite a lot of weight in paper." The AMC exec revealed that this weight saving did vary significantly by plane — from a saving of 250 pounds on a four-person C-17 to 490 pounds on a C-5 with ten crewmembers.

The AMC won a $9.36 million contract to deploy up to 18,000 third-generation, WiFi-only, 32GB iPads last year. Some 16,000 of these are now in use by AMC aircrew, with the remaining 2,000 units spread out across other Air Force divisions.

Engadget Giveaway win a 32GB black HTC One on AT&T!

No, not that One. Or that other One. It's definitely not this One either. Rather, we're talking about this One -- you know, the HTC flagship kind -- and the folks at AT&T have a unit ready for you to win. This particular model is of the 32GB persuasion, and it's currently up for grabs. It's not unlocked to all carriers and doesn't come with free service, so we have to limit this contest to our US readers. Two entries are all yours, and you can snag a third for the price of answering a simple question about BlinkFeed. So head below to the Rafflecopter widget and enter! Good luck.
