Google Drive for Android updated with card UI and refined scanner funtion

Cards, cards, cards... that's the refrain around the Google campus these days. Everything is getting turned into cards. That now includes your documents stored on Drive, too. The Google Drive app for Android was updated today with a whole new UI that moves towards the refined Holo design of the Play Music app and displays your uploaded files as "cards," though, you can always revert to a tweaked list view. The cards offer a thumbnail preview along with the file name and an icon indicating the type of document. The ability to snap photos and have the results turned into a OCR-processed PDF has also been updated slightly. The feature is now called "scan" and it automatically crops photos to contain only the document you need to upload. Lastly, you can finally tweak text settings in sheets, delivering a much more robust mobile formatting experience. Just hit up the Play Store to get your update now.

Track Down Gatsby in This 8-Bit Web Game

Chelsea-stark By Chelsea Stark2013-05-13 20:04:42 UTC

If the world of Baz Lurhmann's The Great Gatsby is too glitzy for you, maybe you'd like to try on something a little more ... pixelated.

Great Gatsby Game transports you back to the land of the Nintendo Entertainment System in look and feel while you remain safely on your web browser. Just like any video game version of a movie, however, it's a little off base in terms of the subject matter.

You play Nick Carraway on his quest to meet Gatsby himself but, instead of partying it up, you'll spend time slapping everyone you come across with your hat. This must be taken from some special edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel we didn't read.

Still, Great Gatsby Game does crib lots from the book, including quotes from Fitzgerald and settings fans of the novel will recognize.

This isn't the first Great Gatsby web game to show up in time with the new movie's release. Slate created its own game in which you thrash against waves endlessly in your little rowboat to reach the green light and the American Dream.

Just like the film, Great Gatsby Game boasts its own unique soundtrack full of 8-bit chiptunes reminiscent of the gaming era.

Check out the video above to learn more about Great Gatsby Game

Kid President Sends Heartfelt Mother's Day Salute to Moms

Ksd2 By Kate Sommers-Dawes2013-05-12 02:12:48 UTC

Kid President, the youthful powerhouse in a power suit who knows how to give one heck of a motivational pep talk, has taken his inspirational talents to Mother's Day.

The video message, sent "on behalf of all the kids in the world," shows Kid President, whose given name is Robbie Novak, spelling out the ten things moms need to know in his typical, exuberant fashion.

Don't worry so much about cleaning, he exhorts mom. "Our house isn't messy, it's awesome. It's awesome because we live in it." And the kid gets incisive when he says, poignantly, "It's just hard to grow up. Sometimes we just need moms ... to tell us everything is OK."

"Thanks for believing in us, putting up with us, and straight-up loving us," he says, with his usual authority and panache.

"Thanks for believing in us, putting up with us, and straight-up loving us," he says, with his usual authority and panache.

Though you may not be as gifted in the oratorical arts as the precocious kid in the video above, don't forget to send up some gratitude to the mother in your life in whatever way you can.

The point is, we love you, moms. You're beautiful. And remember, mom upside down is "wow."

Google's conversational search goes live with latest version of Chrome

After revealing it at I/O 2013 only days ago, Google's new conversational voice search function is up and running on Chrome 27. If you've got that version, you'll now get a spoken response on top of a web page display when using the voice search function (the microphone in the main search window), for starters. More interestingly, the new feature also includes semantic search, meaning you can ask follow-up questions without repeating needless info -- for instance, "who's the CEO of GE?" can now be followed up with "how old is he?" and Google will know who "he" is. We gave it a spin for ourselves and found that when it worked, it worked well, however, the system may be overwhelmed by the launch and is giving us a "no internet connection" message most of the time -- not exactly what we're looking for.

Hands-on with Kwikset and UniKey's Kevo keyless entry system

Kwikset and UniKey are set to update their home entry systems, which have remained largely unchanged since they were first invented more than a hundred years ago. Using a Bluetooth daughter card in the lock mechanism, a couple Bluetooth antennas and a clever app this lock opens by simply touching a finger to the outside of the housing when you approach the door.

At its simplest, the companies' Këvo system isn't too unlike a keyless car entry system, though it takes advantage of your iPhone's Bluetooth LE -- Android and BB10 versions will arrive as soon as those platform's stacks are sorted -- or the included keyfob for the proximity technology. Security is handled through the phone or desktop app enabling you to share keys with your family as administrative users, normal users, one-off entry or even scheduled access. For those concerned about leaving your phone too near the door and thereby allowing anybody access, the system actually uses two antennas, one on the inside and one out. So should you stand behind the closed door the system won't trigger access to those outside. Battery life for the four AAs is rated for a year, and you've no need to worry about being surprised by an outage, either: the system will notify you well in advance using the lock's eight RGB LEDs or through the app. Pricing will be somewhere in the $199 range when it hits the shops, though sadly we don't have an exact date to share. We're pretty stoked to get a chance to check this system out for ourselves but until that time, check out the quick video of it in action below.Kwikset and UniKey's Kevo keyless entry system hands-on See all photos 10 Photos

Online 'Driver's Ed' Course Preps Kids for the Social Web

Ksd2 By Kate Sommers-Dawes2013-05-12 02:56:53 UTC

The pitfalls for teens who are encountering the social web for the first time are myriad and well-documented. The issue is underscored by this public-service announcement from a Vancouver-based organization warning teens of the dangers of sexting, not to mention the much-discussed scourge of cyberbullying and general oversharing.

As any parent knows, kids aren't naturally inclined to consider the consequences of their impulsive online actions, which can have real repercussions down the line. And in an age where our kids are ever-more connected via the social web, but arguably remain unprepared for the responsibility that come with these connections, one Kickstarter project is looking to help.

"Like driver's ed for the social web," the project website says, "this course will prep tweens for their first Facebook account. With a twist. Parents study, too." It's called HomePage, and it seeks to educate children and parents through an online curriculum that aims to provide both parties with the tools to tackle the social web's most prevalent problems; the snares mentioned, above, as well as academic dishonesty, abusive language and general best practices.

The program's creator is Clay Nichols, chief creative officer at LookOut Social, a collaborative, educational site whose purpose is "to help families work together to be safe online, now and in the future." According to its Kickstarter page, HomePage is "a first step in creating a comprehensive content and technology solution for families living in a highly social, ever-changing, increasingly plugged-in, documented and transparent world."

Depending on what they pledge, backers can receive advance curriculum access, as well as the ability to participate in a series of webinars that aim to supplement program content.

Aiming for a September release, the project has already surpassed its funding goal of $10,000. For more on the educational-outreach tool and social-web responsibility for teens, check out the video, above.

Amazon Gives Away 'Tens of Millions' of Dollars in 'Coins'

Amazon-coins Seth-fiegerman By Seth Fiegerman2013-05-13 17:46:55 UTC

If you own a Kindle Fire, you're now $5 richer — sort of.

Amazon on Monday rolled out Amazon Coins, a virtual currency for Kindle Fire, by giving all registered users of the device 500 free coins, each of which is valued at $0.01. The currency, which Amazon first teased in February, can currently be used to buy games, apps and in-app purchases.

In total, Amazon says it has added "tens of millions of dollars" in Amazon Coins to the accounts of Kindle Fire customers — if you're eligible, you should have received an email notification.

Amazon isn't the first Internet company to introduce a virtual currency for its customers. Facebook launched Credits for buying gifts on the social network, but eventually killed off the currency in 2012.

Offering an alternative currency could potentially boost in-app purchases, which would be a boon to app developers and serve as an incentive for them to give some preference to Amazon over other operating systems. Amazon is also offering discounts to customers who buy Coins in bulk, which locks customers into the Amazon ecosystem that much more.

It remains to be seen whether Amazon will roll out Coins to other product categories besides apps and games, but the possibility is certainly there.

Man Refuses to Stop Drone-Spying on Seattle Woman

Drone Rebecca J. Rosen for The Atlantic 2013-05-13 12:35:36 -0500

Walk onto someone's lawn and you're trespassing; fly over it in a helicopter and you're in the clear — "the air is a public highway," the Supreme Court declared in 1946. But what about the in-between space? Does the availability of unmanned aerial vehicles (aka drones, aka UAVs) throw a wrench in the old legal understandings?

Well, here's where the rubber meets the road for this abstract line of questioning. The Capitol Hill Seattle Blog reports a complaint it received from a resident in the Miller Park neighborhood. She writes:

This afternoon, a stranger set an aerial drone into flight over my yard and beside my house near Miller Playfield. I initially mistook its noisy buzzing for a weed-whacker on this warm spring day. After several minutes, I looked out my third-story window to see a drone hovering a few feet away. My husband went to talk to the man on the sidewalk outside our home who was operating the drone with a remote control, to ask him to not fly his drone near our home. The man insisted that it is legal for him to fly an aerial drone over our yard and adjacent to our windows. He noted that the drone has a camera, which transmits images he viewed through a set of glasses. He purported to be doing "research". We are extremely concerned, as he could very easily be a criminal who plans to break into our house or a peeping-tom.

The site adds, "The woman tells us she called police but they decided not to show up when the man left."

But even given the Supreme Court's finding that The Atlantic's Alexis Madrigal raised in October, it's unclear whether this stranger's drone-flight — not to mention his photography — was legal under current law.

John Villasenor, author of a recent Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy article about the laws governing drones and privacy, explained to me over email that it's difficult to analyze the legalities of the case without more information. What kind of drone was it? How was it flown? These questions would be instrumental to determining whether it was operated in accordance with FAA regulations.

As for the privacy concerns, one of the most important questions is what was being photographed. "If the camera on the drone was always aimed at the public street," Villasenor writes, "then that's very different than if it was capturing images into the home through the window."

The First Amendment provides a right to gather information, but that right is not unbounded; it ends, Villasenor writes, "when it crosses into an invasion of privacy." He continued, "Putting a stepladder up against someone else's home without permission, climbing up the ladder, and then photographing into a second-floor window would be an invasion of privacy. Using a drone just outside the window to obtain those same photographs would be just as much an invasion of privacy."

New technologies may present new ways of violating people's privacy, but that doesn't mean they're legal. It will take courts years to figure out how to apply our laws to our age of drones (and years for legislators to revise them — they're not, after all, perfect), but we're not starting from scratch. That said, police (or other law-enforcement agents) will need to actually enforce existing laws, or they're not all that helpful.

Gas Pump Prank Sparks Stunning Karaoke Session

Sam-laird By Sam Laird2013-05-11 23:25:16 UTC

A simple gas-pump prank ends up turning into one of the funniest karaoke sessions you'll ever see, in this viral video.

It begins as an installment of The Tonight Show's "Pumpcast News," where gas customers are surprised at the pump by a news anchor who can see them from the station's television screens.

But in this case, they prank just the right person: A man who delivers a killer impromptu karaoke rendition of Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer." And that's not all — his wife then does her own spot-on performance of "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics.

This is truly must-see stuff and the YouTube video, above, has gone viral for good reason. Check it out for yourself; then let us know what you think in the comments.

Helios handlebars turns any bike into a smart twowheeler handson

Technologically bent cyclists have their choice of advanced bicycles these days, but it's a little hard to justify getting a specialized vehicle if your existing two-wheeler still functions just fine. However, swap your bike's handlebars with one of these handsome aluminum ones from Helios and all of a sudden your beloved ride is equipped with a 500-lumen headlight, a pair of rear-facing RGB LED indicators, Bluetooth 4.0 for smartphone communications and, yes, even a built-in GPS. Join us after the break as we give you a brief tour of the Helios Bars and how it's well worth its $200 price point.

As you might expect, the LED indicators can be used as turn signals; simply press a raised button on either side of the center stem to turn them on or off. When paired with an iOS app called Helios Connect, however, the LEDs have a couple more functions. You can choose one of nine colors for a bit of ambient lighting, or you can enable a speedometer function that changes the color of the LEDs depending on how fast you're going; the app uses your phone's GPS to determine your speed. For example, red means you're a little slow at around 10mph while green indicates you're a pedaling speed demon at around 30mph.Helios Bars at Maker Faire 2013 See all photos 17 Photos

when.eng("eng.galleries.init")

What's more, you can use the LEDs as a form of turn-by-turn navigation. Enter in your desired destination into the app, and start pedaling. Once you arrive at a point where you need to make a turn, the appropriate indicator will flash so you'll know whether to go left or right. The team at Helios told us that it uses the bicycle-friendly directions from Google Maps, so hopefully there aren't too many side trips to the freeway.

Speaking of the app, you can also use it to turn the headlamp on and off remotely, or you can enable a proximity mode so that it turns on as you get closer to the bike and turns off as you walk away. The app is iOS-only for now, but fingers are crossed that Bluetooth 4.0 will be standardized in the next version of Android so that they can get started on making an app for that platform as well.

Helios handlebars turns any bike into a smart twowheeler handson

If the lights and the app aren't enough to strike your fancy, every Helios handlebar comes with a low-power GPS module and even cellular connectivity. Pop in a prepaid SIM card and you can track your bike from anywhere in the world -- send it a text and you'll get a reply with a Google Maps link to its location, hopefully recovering a lost or stolen bike in the process. The GPS module has a reserve battery all its own that should last up to 15 days, giving you sufficient time to track it down.

We had a chance to take an early look at the Helios Bars, and were impressed by the build quality of the reinforced aluminum chassis. The RGB LEDs shone brightly, as did the powerful 500-lumen headlight. Co-founder Kenneth Gibbs told us it illuminates both the ground and what's ahead of you, something not every bicycle headlight can do. The lights are powered by a pair of lithium ion batteries housed in each handlebar, which you can refuel by popping 'em in a charger. If you're worried about the handlebar being stolen, fellow co-founder Seena Zandipour assured us that it'll be installed using special security screws that only you can install or remove with a provided tool.

However, you can't buy these Helios handlebars just yet. The team says they're about to launch a Kickstarter campaign this Tuesday, which will hopefully lead to that. The Bars are available in both bullhorn and dropbar designs in either black or white for $199 each. Get in early enough for the Early Brid pricing, however, and you'll be able to snag one for $149. While we wait for their Kickstarter to begin, feel free to peruse the gallery above and the source link to get more information on the smartest pair of bicycle handlebars we've ever seen.
