Victoria’s Secret Has Change of Heart About Kate Upton

When Kate Upton's first Sports Illustrated cover propelled her to international stardom in February 2012, her modeling portfolio contained only a few labels: namely, Beach Bunny Swimwear and the Victoria's Secret catalogue, where she appeared in early 2011. But casting agent Sophia Neophitou, who handles the books for the Victoria's Secret fashion show, was quick to distance the underwear brand from Upton. In a now-infamous Times interview in 2012, she sniffed that Upton's look was "too obvious" for the label's fashion show, adding that they "would never use" her:

“She’s like a Page 3 girl,” Ms. Neophitou said, referring to the scantily clad voluptuous women featured in The Sun, a London tabloid. “She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.”

How times have changed! Fourteen months and one major Vogue cover later, Victoria's Secret — who hasn't featured Upton in any of their promotional materials since Neophitou's comments — put her on the back of their latest catalogue. It's unclear whether this is a reused image from her 2011 photo shoot — she's wearing their Body by Victoria bra in black, which has been around for years, so it very well might be.

Anyway, is this meant to be an olive branch toward Upton, who has now proven her ability to sell magazines and drive web traffic like nobody's business? Perhaps Victoria's Secret finally realized that they should have had Upton in their backyard this whole time. After all, they're the brand that prides themselves on using "healthier" models with "personalities" (translation: women with David Kirsch–toned quads who are willing to appear in goofy videos) instead of the waifish girls found on high-fashion runways. They probably never expected Vogue to start beating them at their own game. This may very well signal a change of heart on Neophitou's part, and the beginning of Upton's Victoria's Secret comeback.

Canon 50D gains video recording through Magic Lantern RAW hack

It may be time to dust off that Canon 50D you purchased back in 2008. The folks behind the Magic Lantern firmware add-on have pulled yet another rabbit out the proverbial hat (or is it lantern?) by enabling RAW video recording on the APS-C-based DSLR. What's even more impressive is that the 50D lacks video support out of the box, so this new-found functionality is truly magical. This hack comes hot on the heels of the Magic Lantern team coaxing the Canon 5D Mark II / III into capturing 24 fps RAW video. With the firmware add-on installed, the 50D is capable of shooting video up to 1592 x 1062 pixels at 30 fps. There are some caveats, though. First, there's no audio recording since the camera lacks a microphone input and associated electronics. Second, capturing RAW video requires fast CF cards (at least UDMA 6). Third, we now fully expect to see the 50D skyrocket in value on the used market. Hit the break for a few sample videos.

Samsung official reportedly confirms Note III in the works, muses on potential camera upgrades

Given the success of the original Galaxy Note and its sequel, there's little doubt a third installment of the super-sized handset line is on Samsung's to-launch list. Korean site ETNews claims to have heard the first legitimate confirmation of the Note III's existence, however, citing a Samsung official as its source. The insider apparently had much to say on plans for the camera, too. It's expected to be a 13-megapixel affair and could see other upgrades over its predecessor, including optical image stabilization and 3x optical zoom. According to the official, no final decisions on the camera have been made yet, but with less than four months to go until IFA (where the previous Notes have debuted), it's probably time to start nailing those specs down.

Mataerial 3D printer escapes the tyranny of layers, changes colors on the fly video

Anyone who has used conventional 3D printers knows that they work by stacking layer on layer, limiting just what they can create and where. Mataerial's upcoming printer doesn't abide by those petty rules. Its robotic arm draws instantly solid 3D curves rather than 2D slices, shedding the need for direct support or even a horizontal surface. It's also not bound by traditional approaches to color. As Mataerial injects dye at the last moment, it can switch hues mid-stream and introduce subtle gradients. We've reached out for launch and pricing details, but it's reasonable to presume that such advanced control won't come cheap -- we'd look to the 3Doodler for more affordable in-air artistry.

Olloclip brings distortion correcting camera app to its threeinone iPhone lens

As our debut Insert Coin project, the Olloclip will always be near and dear to our hearts, but the handy three-in-one iPhone lens is not without its niggles -- like significant distortion produced by the the wide-angle and fish-eye attachments, for one. Luckily, Olloclip now has a remedy for that in the form of an iPhone camera app that'll correct or enhance such aberrations, depending on which way you want to take your artistry. You'll also get video and macro modes, spot focus and exposure adjustments and a photo library -- all the better to stay footloose and DSLR-free on the road. You can grab it for free at the source.
